text> A Chandra image of Messier 82, or M82, shows the result of star formation
on overdrive. M82 is located about 12 million light years from Earth and is the
nearest place to us where the conditions are similar to those when the Universe
was much younger with lots of stars forming.

text> This optical and infrared image from the Digitized Sky Survey shows the
crowded field around the binary system GRS 1915+105 (GRS 1915 for short) located
near the plane of our Galaxy. The top-left inset shows a close-up of the Chandra
image of GRS 1915 , and the bottom-right inset shows the remarkable "heartbeats"
seen in the X-ray light from this system. Using Chandra and the Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer (RXTE), astronomers have discovered what drives these heartbeats
and given new insight into the ways that black holes can regulate their intake
and severely curtail their growth.

astronomers with a detailed new look at how galaxy and black hole formation may
have occured in the early Universe. This image shows optical data from the

been stitched together to look at the famous Carina Nebula like never before. In
this image, low, medium, and high-energy X-rays are colored red, green, and blue
respectively. Chandra detected over 14,000 stars in this region, revealed a
diffuse X-ray glow, and provided strong evidence that massive stars have already
self-destructed in this nearby supernova factory. The Carina Nebula is one of
the best places in the Milky Way to study how young and massive stars live and
die.

text> High-mass stars are important because they are responsible for much of the
energy pumped into our galaxy over its lifetime. Unfortunately, these stars are
poorly understood because they are often found relatively far away and can be
obscured by gas and dust. The star cluster NGC 281 is an exception to this rule.
It is located about 9,200 light years from Earth and, remarkably, almost 1,000

text> G299.2-2.9 is an intriguing supernova remnant found about 16,000 light
years away in the Milky Way galaxy. Evidence points to G299.2-2.9 being the
remains of a Type Ia supernova, where a white dwarf has grown sufficiently
massive to cause a thermonuclear explosion. Because it is older than most
supernova remnants caused by these explosions, at an age of about 4500 years,
G299.2-2.9 provides astronomers with an excellent opportunity to study how these
objects evolve over time. It also provides a probe of the Type Ia supernova
explosion that produced this structure.

text> The star-forming region, 30 Doradus, is one of the largest located close
to the Milky Way and is found in the neighboring galaxy Large Magellanic Cloud.
About 2,400 massive stars in the center of 30 Doradus, also known as the
Tarantula Nebula, are producing intense radiation and powerful winds as they
blow off material.

text> Like wine in a glass, vast clouds of hot gas are sloshing back and forth
in Abell 2052, a galaxy cluster located about 480 million light years from
Earth. X-ray data (blue) from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory shows the hot gas
in this dynamic system, and optical data (gold) from the Very Large Telescope
shows the galaxies. The hot, X-ray bright gas has an average temperature of
about 30 million degrees.

text> Data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton have been
combined to discover a young pulsar in the remains of a supernova located in the
Small Magellanic Cloud, or SMC. This would be the first definite time a pulsar,
a spinning, ultra-dense star, has been found in a supernova remnant in the SMC,
a small satellite galaxy to the Milky Way. The pulsar, known as SXP 1062, is the
bright white source located on the right-hand side of the image in the middle of
the diffuse blue emission inside a red shell.
