Q47: Aside from the stylistical change in the question, I would also suggest using "Cчитаете ли вы себя человеком гомосексуальной/бисексуальной/асексуальной ориентации... " Directly translated this means "Do you consider yourself to be a person of homosexual/bisexual or asexual orientation" - this is my impression of what would be most politically correct and inclusive. It also uses the word "person of .. orientation" similar to Ivan's suggestion for transgendered person.

Q38-40 Is "политика" the best word to represent a company policy? I looked back at the original english phrasing of the questions that use phrases like "employer's policy on intellectual property...". Would "линия поведения/установка" be a more precise translation? My concern is changing the meaning too much in these questions to prevent researchers from reasonably combining these with other language results.

Q35: Changed to "Предпринимали ли вы следующие меры по испытании или наблюдении харассмента? Выберите все подходящие варианты." This is more consistent with the translation in Q33.

The initial translation: "Какие из следующих действий вы совершили в результате харассмента?" does not distinguish between observing and experiencing harassment, the way the original English question did. The initial translation also assumes actions were taken. Directly translated it read: "Which of these actions did you perform as a result of harassment?"

Q34: the translated scales are wrong. The second item in Russian reads "somewhat ineffective" but it should be "slightly effective": Слегка эффективны.

Q33: Changed to "Если взять самый последний случай харассмента который вы испытали..." This clarifies that the question is about most recent harassment experienced, rather than observed. Initial translation just referred to a previous example of harassment, which may not be specific enough.

Q32: Changed to "Вы когда-нибудь испытывали следующие действия направленные на вас..."

Observed actions directed at you sounds akward in Russian, so replaced with "experienced". Also removed unnecessary commas in Q31-32.

Changed answer option #10 to more accurate case in Q31-32:
Злонамеренную публикацию личной информации (докисни)

Q30: more case corrections, changed to:
[[[ _(3)_ ]]] Пренебрежительную реакцию на ваш вклад или на вопросы
[[[ _(4)_ ]]] Неполную или сложную для понимания документацию

Q28: removed unnecessary comma:
Как лучше всего описать ваши отношения с человеком которому вы помогли?

Q27: Changed word order and removed unnecessary comma:
Если взять самый последний случай когда вы помогли кому-то, как именно вас нашел этот человек?

Q23: Another unnecessary comma:
Если взять самый последний случай когда вам помогли, как именно вы нашли этого человека?

Q22: The same word for "others" was used twice to start two consecutive sentences, so changed to a synonym:
"Третьи могут помочь решить технические проблемы..."

Q21, Q20, Q19: "Какое из следующих утверждений ...". The initial translation used "высказываний" which is awkward, and in this context means more "exclamations" rather than "statements".

Q20: "ваш подход к публикации" instead of "ваш подход при публикации"

Q14, Q15, Q16: the Likert scale points were not accurately translated from their English counterparts. Initially they read "Agree, somewhat agree, can't answer, somewhat disagree, disagree", while the English version was "Strongly agree, Somewhat agree, Neither agree nor disagree, Somewhat disagree, Strongly disagree"

Changed this to:

"Решительно cоглашусь
Скорее соглашусь
Ни cоглашусь, ни не соглашусь
Скорее не соглашусь
Решительно не соглашусь"

The mid point now directly corresponds to "Neither agree nor disagree" and I took the phrasing out of a textbook, but it is still slightly awkward in Russian. I think this is preferable to "Cannot answer" because the latter conveys a different meaning and in my experience "Cannot answer/Don't know" options are selected more frequently than neutral options.

Q12: The word secure in Russian has numerous more specific translations. In the initial version, this was translated as "protected" ("защищенное"), which could be interpreted as subject to more copyright, so I believe "safe" is probably more accurate in the given context - "безопасное".

Q10: Initial translation asks how often do you attempt to find open source software alternatives to other kinds of software, while the English version asks about finding open source options "over" other kinds of software (which I take to mean looking for open source options first).

If that's the case, perhaps the following translation would work better:
"Как часто вы пытаетесь найти открытое программное обеспечение перед тем как использовать другие типы программного обеспечения?"

This asks how often do you try to find open source software before using other kinds of software?

Q9: Changed "Protection" to "Safety" as well. Transparency was translated directly to a word that means clear/see through in Russian. I've suggested a word that means "clarity/ease of understanding" instead - Ясность

Q8, Q7: Contributor guide was translated as "guide for adding code", which may be too specific to software. Since a contributor guide may also spell out norms and procedures, changed this to a phrase that means "participation guide": "Руководство по участии".

Another alternative is "a guide for contributors", which would be: "Руководство для контрибьютора"

Q6: some adjustments to the scale here too. Initial translation had two options for "unlikely" that could be interpreted to mean the exact same thing, making it difficult to choose an answer. I replaced this with the equivalent of "somewhat unlikely" and "very unlikely": Скорее маловероятно, Крайне маловероятно.

Q3: Employment status: options 2 and 3 were not mutually exclusive in the Russian version: "Work part time" and "Study". I added a clarification "Study full-time and do not work": Учусь очно и не работаю.

Additional comments from Ivan Ruchkin @ CMU:

- Q54: "Если вы передумали участвовать, или же хотите, чтобы мы..." -> "Если вы передумали участвовать или же хотите, чтобы мы..." (no need for the first comma)
- Q52: the dates are not mutually exclusive - not sure if this is a survey issue or a translation issue. In Russian, it literally says "between 13 and 18 years old" and "between 18 and 25 years old," so if I'm 18, it's not clear which one to pick. (Q49 doesn't have this issue)
- Q47: "Вы считаете себя геем, лесбиянкой, бисексуалом, асексуалом или же представителем любого другого сексуального меньшинства?" -> "Cчитаете ли вы себя геем, лесбиянкой, бисексуалом, асексуалом или же представителем любого другого сексуального меньшинства?" (changed word order to be a question, not affirmation)
- Q46: "Вы считаете себя трансгендером?" -> "Считаете ли вы себя трансгендерным человеком?" (word order like in the previous + changed transgender to transgender person - a more official use of the term in Russian)
- Q42: "Да, и я намереваюсь остаться здесь на время" -> "Да, и я намереваюсь остаться здесь временно" (a less English-style way to say 'temporarily")
- Q39&40: "Использование таких зависимостей редко разрешается, если разрешается вообще." -> "Использование таких зависимостей редко разрешается или не разрешается вообще." (another stylistic change)
- Q38: " Как соглашение или политика вашего работодателя в отношении интеллектуальной собственности влияет на ваш вклад в проекты с открытым кодом в свободное от работы время?" -> "Как отношение вашего работодателя к отношении интеллектуальной собственности влияет на ваш вклад в проекты с открытым кодом в свободное от работы время?" (style again, clarified the meaning)
- Q36: "Вы вносите вклад в проекты с открытым кодом в ходе своей профессиональной деятельности?" -> "Вносите ли вы вклад в проекты с открытым кодом в ходе своей профессиональной деятельности?" (question word order)
