Overview ======== The DirectX HLSL Compiler is a compiler and related set of tools used to compile High-Level Shader Language (HLSL) programs into DirectX Intermediate Language (DXIL) representation. Applications that make use of DirectX for graphics, games, and computation can use it to generate shader programs. The DirectX HLSL Compiler is built on the 3.7 releases of LLVM and Clang. The LLVM compiler infrastructure supports a wide range of projects, from industrial strength compilers to specialized JIT applications to small research projects. Similarly, documentation is broken down into several high-level groupings targeted at different audiences: LLVM Design & Overview ====================== Several introductory papers and presentations. .. toctree:: :hidden: LangRef DXIL HLSLChanges :doc:`LangRef` Defines the LLVM intermediate representation. :doc:`DXIL` Defines the DirectX Intermediate Language (DXIL) for GPU shaders. `Introduction to the LLVM Compiler`__ Presentation providing a users introduction to LLVM. .. __: http://llvm.org/pubs/2008-10-04-ACAT-LLVM-Intro.html `Intro to LLVM`__ Book chapter providing a compiler hacker's introduction to LLVM. .. __: http://www.aosabook.org/en/llvm.html `LLVM: A Compilation Framework for Lifelong Program Analysis & Transformation`__ Design overview. .. __: http://llvm.org/pubs/2004-01-30-CGO-LLVM.html :doc:`HLSLChanges` Describes high-level changes made to LLVM and Clang to accomodate HLSL and DXIL. `LLVM: An Infrastructure for Multi-Stage Optimization`__ More details (quite old now). .. __: http://llvm.org/pubs/2002-12-LattnerMSThesis.html User Guides =========== For those new to the LLVM system.
