# We are using a recursive build, so we need to do a little thinking
# to get the ordering right.
#
# Most importantly: sub-Makefiles should only ever modify files in
# their own directory. If in some directory we have a dependency on
# a file in another dir (which doesn't happen often, but it's often
# unavoidable when linking the built-in.o targets which finally
# turn into vmlinux), we will call a sub make in that other dir, and
# after that we are sure that everything which is in that other dir
# is now up to date.
#
# The only cases where we need to modify files which have global
# effects are thus separated out and done before the recursive
# descending is started. They are now explicitly listed as the
# prepare rule.

m68k,m68knommu: merge header files Merge header files for m68k and m68knommu to the single location: arch/m68k/include/asm The majority of this patch was the result of the script that is included in the changelog below. The script was originally written by Arnd Bergman and exten by me to cover a few more files. When the header files differed the script uses the following: The original m68k file is named <file>_mm.h [mm for memory manager] The m68knommu file is named <file>_no.h [no for no memory manager] The files uses the following include guard: This include gaurd works as the m68knommu toolchain set the __uClinux__ symbol - so this should work in userspace too. Merging the header files for m68k and m68knommu exposes the (unexpected?) ABI differences thus it is easier to actually identify these and thus to fix them. The commit has been build tested with both a m68k and a m68knommu toolchain - with success. The commit has also been tested with "make headers_check" and this patch fixes make headers_check for m68knommu. The script used: TARGET=arch/m68k/include/asm SOURCE=arch/m68knommu/include/asm INCLUDE="cachectl.h errno.h fcntl.h hwtest.h ioctls.h ipcbuf.h \ linkage.h math-emu.h md.h mman.h movs.h msgbuf.h openprom.h \ oplib.h poll.h posix_types.h resource.h rtc.h sembuf.h shmbuf.h \ shm.h shmparam.h socket.h sockios.h spinlock.h statfs.h stat.h \ termbits.h termios.h tlb.h types.h user.h" EQUAL="auxvec.h cputime.h device.h emergency-restart.h futex.h \ ioctl.h irq_regs.h kdebug.h local.h mutex.h percpu.h \ sections.h topology.h" NOMUUFILES="anchor.h bootstd.h coldfire.h commproc.h dbg.h \ elia.h flat.h m5206sim.h m520xsim.h m523xsim.h m5249sim.h \ m5272sim.h m527xsim.h m528xsim.h m5307sim.h m532xsim.h \ m5407sim.h m68360_enet.h m68360.h m68360_pram.h m68360_quicc.h \ m68360_regs.h MC68328.h MC68332.h MC68EZ328.h MC68VZ328.h \ mcfcache.h mcfdma.h mcfmbus.h mcfne.h mcfpci.h mcfpit.h \ mcfsim.h mcfsmc.h mcftimer.h mcfuart.h mcfwdebug.h \ nettel.h quicc_simple.h smp.h" FILES="atomic.h bitops.h bootinfo.h bug.h bugs.h byteorder.h cache.h \ cacheflush.h checksum.h current.h delay.h div64.h \ dma-mapping.h dma.h elf.h entry.h fb.h fpu.h hardirq.h hw_irq.h io.h \ irq.h kmap_types.h machdep.h mc146818rtc.h mmu.h mmu_context.h \ module.h page.h page_offset.h param.h pci.h pgalloc.h \ pgtable.h processor.h ptrace.h scatterlist.h segment.h \ setup.h sigcontext.h siginfo.h signal.h string.h system.h swab.h \ thread_info.h timex.h tlbflush.h traps.h uaccess.h ucontext.h \ unaligned.h unistd.h" mergefile() { BASE=${1%.h} git mv ${SOURCE}/$1 ${TARGET}/${BASE}_no.h git mv ${TARGET}/$1 ${TARGET}/${BASE}_mm.h cat << EOF > ${TARGET}/$1 EOF git add ${TARGET}/$1 } set -e mkdir -p ${TARGET} git mv include/asm-m68k/* ${TARGET} rmdir include/asm-m68k git rm ${SOURCE}/Kbuild for F in $INCLUDE $EQUAL; do git rm ${SOURCE}/$F done for F in $NOMUUFILES; do git mv ${SOURCE}/$F ${TARGET}/$F done for F in $FILES ; do mergefile $F done rmdir arch/m68knommu/include/asm rmdir arch/m68knommu/include Cc: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Ungerer <gerg@uclinux.org>

kbuild: use INSTALLKERNEL to select customized installkernel script Replace the use of CROSS_COMPILE to select a customized installkernel script with the possibility to set INSTALLKERNEL to select a custom installkernel script when running make: make INSTALLKERNEL=arm-installkernel install With this patch we are now more consistent across different architectures - they did not all support use of CROSS_COMPILE. The use of CROSS_COMPILE was a hack as this really belongs to gcc/binutils and the installkernel script does not change just because we change toolchain. The use of CROSS_COMPILE caused troubles with an upcoming patch that saves CROSS_COMPILE when a kernel is built - it would no longer be installable. [Thanks to Peter Z. for this hint] This patch undos what Ian did in commit: 0f8e2d62fa04441cd12c08ce521e84e5bd3f8a46 ("use ${CROSS_COMPILE}installkernel in arch/*/boot/install.sh") The patch has been lightly tested on x86 only - but all changes looks obvious. gcov: add gcov profiling infrastructure Enable the use of GCC's coverage testing tool gcov [1] with the Linux kernel. gcov may be useful for: * debugging (has this code been reached at all?) * test improvement (how do I change my test to cover these lines?) * minimizing kernel configurations (do I need this option if the associated code is never run?) The profiling patch incorporates the following changes: * change kbuild to include profiling flags * provide functions needed by profiling code * present profiling data as files in debugfs Note that on some architectures, enabling gcc's profiling option "-fprofile-arcs" for the entire kernel may trigger compile/link/ run-time problems, some of which are caused by toolchain bugs and others which require adjustment of architecture code. For this reason profiling the entire kernel is initially restricted to those architectures for which it is known to work without changes. This restriction can be lifted once an architecture has been tested and found compatible with gcc's profiling. Profiling of single files or directories is still available on all platforms (see config help text). x86: simplify "make ARCH=x86" and fix kconfig all.config Simplify "make ARCH=x86" and fix kconfig so we again can set 64BIT in all.config. For a fix the diffstat is nice: 6 files changed, 3 insertions(+), 36 deletions(-) The patch reverts these commits: 0f855aa64b3f63d35a891510cf7db932a435c116 -> kconfig: add helper to set config symbol from environment variable 2a113281f5cd2febbab21a93c8943f8d3eece4d3 -> kconfig: use $K64BIT to set 64BIT with all*config targets Roman Zippel pointed out that kconfig supported string compares so the additional complexity introduced by the above two patches were not needed. With this patch we have following behaviour: # make {allno,allyes,allmod,rand}config [ARCH=...] option \ host arch | 32bit | 64bit ===================================================== ./. | 32bit | 64bit ARCH=x86 | 32bit | 32bit ARCH=i386 | 32bit | 32bit ARCH=x86_64 | 64bit | 64bit The general rule are that ARCH= and native architecture takes precedence over the configuration. So make ARCH=i386 [whatever] will always build a 32-bit kernel no matter what the configuration says. The configuration will be updated to 32-bit if it was configured to 64-bit and the other way around. This behaviour is consistent with previous behaviour so no suprises here. make ARCH=x86 will per default result in a 32-bit kernel but as the only ARCH= value x86 allow the user to select between 32-bit and 64-bit using menuconfig. kbuild: support for %.symtypes files Here is a patch that adds a new -T option to genksyms for generating dumps of the type definition that makes up the symbol version hashes. This allows to trace modversion changes back to what caused them. The dump format is the name of the type defined, followed by its definition (which is almost C): s#list_head struct list_head { s#list_head * next , * prev ; } The s#, u#, e#, and t# prefixes stand for struct, union, enum, and typedef. The exported symbols do not define types, and thus do not have an x# prefix: nfs4_acl_get_whotype int nfs4_acl_get_whotype ( char * , t#u32 ) The symbol type defintion of a single file can be generated with: make fs/jbd/journal.symtypes If KBUILD_SYMTYPES is defined, all the *.symtypes of all object files that export symbols are generated. The single *.symtypes files can be combined into a single file after a kernel build with a script like the following: for f in $(find -name '*.symtypes' | sort); do f=${f#./} echo "/* ${f%.symtypes}.o */" cat $f echo done \ | sed -e '\:UNKNOWN:d' \ -e 's:[,;] }:}:g' \ -e 's:\([[({]\) :\1:g' \ -e 's: \([])},;]\):\1:g' \ -e 's: $::' \ $f \ | awk ' /^.#/ { if (defined[$1] == $0) { print $1 next } defined[$1] = $0 } { print } ' When the kernel ABI changes, diffing individual *.symtype files, or the combined files, against each other will show which symbol changes caused the ABI changes. This can save a tremendous amount of time. Dump the types that make up modversions Signed-off-by: Andreas Gruenbacher <agruen@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org>

gcov: add gcov profiling infrastructure Enable the use of GCC's coverage testing tool gcov [1] with the Linux kernel. gcov may be useful for: * debugging (has this code been reached at all?) * test improvement (how do I change my test to cover these lines?) * minimizing kernel configurations (do I need this option if the associated code is never run?) The profiling patch incorporates the following changes: * change kbuild to include profiling flags * provide functions needed by profiling code * present profiling data as files in debugfs Note that on some architectures, enabling gcc's profiling option "-fprofile-arcs" for the entire kernel may trigger compile/link/ run-time problems, some of which are caused by toolchain bugs and others which require adjustment of architecture code. For this reason profiling the entire kernel is initially restricted to those architectures for which it is known to work without changes. This restriction can be lifted once an architecture has been tested and found compatible with gcc's profiling. Profiling of single files or directories is still available on all platforms (see config help text).
