Protected Execution Facility (PEF) is an architectural change for
POWER 9 that enables Secure Virtual Machines (SVMs). When enabled,
PEF adds a new higher privileged mode, called Ultravisor mode, to POWER
architecture. Along with the new mode there is new firmware called the
Protected Execution Ultravisor (or Ultravisor for short).
POWER 9 DD2.3 chips (PVR=0x004e1203) or greater will be PEF-capable.
Attached documentation provides an overview of PEF and defines the API
for various interfaces that must be implemented in the Ultravisor
firmware as well as in the KVM Hypervisor.

Convert docs to ReST and add them to the arch-specific
book.
The conversion here was trivial, as almost every file there
was already using an elegant format close to ReST standard.
The changes were mostly to mark literal blocks and add a few
missing section title identifiers.
One note with regards to "--": on Sphinx, this can't be used
to identify a list, as it will format it badly. This can be
used, however, to identify a long hyphen - and "---" is an
even longer one.

- Removal of the NPU DMA code, used by the out-of-tree Nvidia driver, as well
as some other functions only used by drivers that haven't (yet?) made it
upstream.
- A fix for a bug in our handling of hardware watchpoints (eg. perf record -e

- Enable HAVE_ARCH_HUGE_VMAP, which allows us to use large pages for vmalloc
when using the Radix MMU.
- A large but incremental rewrite of our exception handling code to use gas
macros rather than multiple levels of nested CPP macros.
And the usual small fixes, cleanups and improvements.

Convert kdump documentation to ReST and add it to the

PG_lru|PG_private|PG_swapcache|PG_swapbacked|PG_slab|PG_hwpoision|PG_head_mask|PAGE_BUDDY_MAPCOUNT_VALUE(~PG_buddy)|PAGE_OFFLINE_MAPCOUNT_VALUE(~PG_offline)
I opted to break this one, into two entries with the same content,
in order to make it easier to display after being parsed in html and PDF.
The conversion is actually:

This adds a flag so that the DAWR can be enabled on P9 via:
echo Y > /sys/kernel/debug/powerpc/dawr_enable_dangerous
The DAWR was previously force disabled on POWER9 in:
9654153158 powerpc: Disable DAWR in the base POWER9 CPU features
Also see Documentation/powerpc/DAWR-POWER9.txt
This is a dangerous setting, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Some users may not care about a bad user crashing their box
(ie. single user/desktop systems) and really want the DAWR. This
allows them to force enable DAWR.
This flag can also be used to disable DAWR access. Once this is
cleared, all DAWR access should be cleared immediately and your
machine once again safe from crashing.
Userspace may get confused by toggling this. If DAWR is force
enabled/disabled between getting the number of breakpoints (via
PTRACE_GETHWDBGINFO) and setting the breakpoint, userspace will get an
inconsistent view of what's available. Similarly for guests.
For the DAWR to be enabled in a KVM guest, the DAWR needs to be force
enabled in the host AND the guest. For this reason, this won't work on
POWERVM as it doesn't allow the HCALL to work. Writes of 'Y' to the
dawr_enable_dangerous file will fail if the hypervisor doesn't support
writing the DAWR.
To double check the DAWR is working, run this kernel selftest:
tools/testing/selftests/powerpc/ptrace/ptrace-hwbreak.c
Any errors/failures/skips mean something is wrong.

One of the primary issues with Firmware Assisted Dump (fadump) on Power
is that it needs a large amount of memory to be reserved. On large
systems with TeraBytes of memory, this reservation can be quite
significant.
In some cases, fadump fails if the memory reserved is insufficient, or
if the reserved memory was DLPAR hot-removed.
In the normal case, post reboot, the preserved memory is filtered to
extract only relevant areas of interest using the makedumpfile tool.
While the tool provides flexibility to determine what needs to be part
of the dump and what memory to filter out, all supported distributions
default this to "Capture only kernel data and nothing else".
We take advantage of this default and the Linux kernel's Contiguous
Memory Allocator (CMA) to fundamentally change the memory reservation
model for fadump.
Instead of setting aside a significant chunk of memory nobody can use,
this patch uses CMA instead, to reserve a significant chunk of memory
that the kernel is prevented from using (due to MIGRATE_CMA), but
applications are free to use it. With this fadump will still be able
to capture all of the kernel memory and most of the user space memory
except the user pages that were present in CMA region.
Essentially, on a P9 LPAR with 2 cores, 8GB RAM and current upstream:
[root@zzxx-yy10 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 7557 193 6822 12 541 6725
Swap: 4095 0 4095
With this patch:
[root@zzxx-yy10 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 8133 194 7464 12 475 7338
Swap: 4095 0 4095
Changes made here are completely transparent to how fadump has
traditionally worked.
Thanks to Aneesh Kumar and Anshuman Khandual for helping us understand
CMA and its usage.

This is a respin with a wider audience (all that get_maintainer returned)
and I know this spams a *lot* of people. Not sure what would be the correct
way, so my apologies for ruining your inbox.
The 00-INDEX files are supposed to give a summary of all files present
in a directory, but these files are horribly out of date and their
usefulness is brought into question. Often a simple "ls" would reveal
the same information as the filenames are generally quite descriptive as
a short introduction to what the file covers (it should not surprise
anyone what Documentation/sched/sched-design-CFS.txt covers)
A few years back it was mentioned that these files were no longer really
needed, and they have since then grown further out of date, so perhaps
it is time to just throw them out.
A short status yields the following _outdated_ 00-INDEX files, first
counter is files listed in 00-INDEX but missing in the directory, last
is files present but not listed in 00-INDEX.
List of outdated 00-INDEX:
Documentation: (4/10)
Documentation/sysctl: (0/1)
Documentation/timers: (1/0)
Documentation/blockdev: (3/1)
Documentation/w1/slaves: (0/1)

Documentation/scheduler: (0/2)
Documentation/fb: (0/1)
Documentation/block: (0/1)
Documentation/networking: (6/37)
Documentation/vm: (1/3)
Then there are 364 subdirectories in Documentation/ with several files that
are missing 00-INDEX alltogether (and another 120 with a single file and no
00-INDEX).
I don't really have an opinion to whether or not we /should/ have 00-INDEX,
but the above 00-INDEX should either be removed or be kept up to date. If
we should keep the files, I can try to keep them updated, but I rather not
if we just want to delete them anyway.
As a starting point, remove all index-files and references to 00-INDEX and
see where the discussion is going.

As staging for supporting various host management functions, add a host
ioctl infrastructure to filter ioctl commands and perform operations that
are common for all host ioctls. Also update the cxlflash documentation to
create a new section for documenting host ioctls.

AFU sync operations are not currently evaluated for failure. This is
acceptable for paths where there is not a dependency on the AFU being
consistent with the host. Examples include link reset events and LUN
cleanup operations. On paths where there is a dependency, such as a LUN
open, a sync failure should be acted upon.
In the event of AFU sync failures, either log or cleanup as appropriate for
operations that are dependent on a successful sync completion.
Update documentation to reflect behavior in the event of an AFU sync
failure.

With commit f6e6bedb77 ("powerpc/fadump: Reserve memory at an offset
closer to bottom of RAM"), memory for fadump is no longer reserved at
the top of RAM. But there are still a few places which say so. Change
them appropriately.

As we are reusing crashkernel parameter instead of fadump_reserve_mem
parameter to specify the memory to reserve for fadump's crash kernel,
update the documentation accordingly.

Highlights include:
- Larger virtual address space on 64-bit server CPUs. By default we use a 128TB
virtual address space, but a process can request access to the full 512TB by
passing a hint to mmap().
- Support for the new Power9 "XIVE" interrupt controller.
- TLB flushing optimisations for the radix MMU on Power9.
- Support for CAPI cards on Power9, using the "Coherent Accelerator Interface
Architecture 2.0".
- The ability to configure the mmap randomisation limits at build and runtime.
- Several small fixes and cleanups to the kprobes code, as well as support for
KPROBES_ON_FTRACE.
- Major improvements to handling of system reset interrupts, correctly treating
them as NMIs, giving them a dedicated stack and using a new hypervisor call
to trigger them, all of which should aid debugging and robustness.
Many fixes and other minor enhancements.

At present, the cxlflash driver only supports hardware with two FC ports. The
code was initially designed with this assumption and is dependent on having
two FC ports - adding more ports will break logic within the driver.
To mitigate this issue, remove the existing port assumptions and transition
the code to support more than two ports. As a side effect, clarify the
interpretation of the DK_CXLFLASH_ALL_PORTS_ACTIVE flag.

IBM POWER9 brings new content and features:
- POWER9 Service Layer
- Registers
- Radix mode
- Process element entry
- Dedicated-Shared Process Programming Model
- Translation Fault Handling
- CAPP
- Memory Context ID
If a valid mm_struct is found the memory context id is used for each
transaction associated with the process handle. The PSL uses the
context ID to find the corresponding process element.

Add some documentation for the 64-bit syscall ABI, which doesn't seem
to be documented elsewhere.
This attempts to document existing practice. The only small discrepancy
is glibc clobbers not quite matching the kernel (e.g., xer, some
vsyscalls trash cr1 whereas glibc only clobbers cr0). These will be
resolved after this document is merged.

Userspace can begin and suspend a transaction within the signal
handler which means they might enter sys_rt_sigreturn() with the
processor in suspended state.
sys_rt_sigreturn() wants to restore process context (which may have
been in a transaction before signal delivery). To do this it must
restore TM SPRS. To achieve this, any transaction initiated within the
signal frame must be discarded in order to be able to restore TM SPRs
as TM SPRs can only be manipulated non-transactionally..

It isn't clear exactly if there is really a use case for userspace
returning with a suspended transaction, however, doing so doesn't (on
its own) constitute a bad frame. As such, this patch simply discards
the transactional state of the context calling the sigreturn and
continues.

Caching the adapter file descriptor and performing a close on behalf of
an application is a poor design. This is due to the fact that once a
file descriptor in installed, it is free to be altered without the
knowledge of the cxlflash driver. This can lead to inconsistencies
between the application and kernel. Furthermore, the nature of the
former design is more exploitable and thus should be abandoned.
To support applications performing a close on the adapter file that is
associated with a context, a new flag is introduced to the user API to
indicate to applications that they are responsible for the close
following the cleanup (detach) of a context. The documentation is also
updated to reflect this change in behavior.

This patch changes the syscall handler to doom (tabort) active
transactions when a syscall is made and return very early without
performing the syscall and keeping side effects to a minimum (no CPU
accounting or system call tracing is performed). Also included is a
new HWCAP2 bit, PPC_FEATURE2_HTM_NOSC, to indicate this
behaviour to userspace.
Currently, the system call instruction automatically suspends an
active transaction which causes side effects to persist when an active
transaction fails.
This does change the kernel's behaviour, but in a way that was
documented as unsupported. It doesn't reduce functionality as
syscalls will still be performed after tsuspend; it just requires that
the transaction be explicitly suspended. It also provides a
consistent interface and makes the behaviour of user code
substantially the same across powerpc and platforms that do not
support suspended transactions (e.g. x86 and s390).
Performance measurements using
http://ozlabs.org/~anton/junkcode/null_syscall.c indicate the cost of
a normal (non-aborted) system call increases by about 0.25%.

This reverts commit feba40362b.
Although the principle of this change is good, the implementation has a
few issues.
Firstly we can sometimes fail to abort a syscall because r12 may have
been clobbered by C code if we went down the virtual CPU accounting
path, or if syscall tracing was enabled.
Secondly we have decided that it is safer to abort the syscall even
earlier in the syscall entry path, so that we avoid the syscall tracing
path when we are transactional.
So that we have time to thoroughly test those changes we have decided to
revert this for this merge window and will merge the fixed version in
the next window.
NB. Rather than reverting the selftest we just drop tm-syscall from
TEST_PROGS so that it's not run by default.

Pull powerpc updates from Ben Herrenschmidt:
"Here is the bulk of the powerpc changes for this merge window. It got
a bit delayed in part because I wasn't paying attention, and in part
because I discovered I had a core PCI change without a PCI maintainer
ack in it. Bjorn eventually agreed it was ok to merge it though we'll
probably improve it later and I didn't want to rebase to add his ack.
There is going to be a bit more next week, essentially fixes that I
still want to sort through and test.
The biggest item this time is the support to build the ppc64 LE kernel
with our new v2 ABI. We previously supported v2 userspace but the
kernel itself was a tougher nut to crack. This is now sorted mostly
thanks to Anton and Rusty.
We also have a fairly big series from Cedric that add support for
64-bit LE zImage boot wrapper. This was made harder by the fact that
traditionally our zImage wrapper was always 32-bit, but our new LE
toolchains don't really support 32-bit anymore (it's somewhat there
but not really "supported") so we didn't want to rely on it. This
meant more churn that just endian fixes.
This brings some more LE bits as well, such as the ability to run in
LE mode without a hypervisor (ie. under OPAL firmware) by doing the
right OPAL call to reinitialize the CPU to take HV interrupts in the
right mode and the usual pile of endian fixes.
There's another series from Gavin adding EEH improvements (one day we
*will* have a release with less than 20 EEH patches, I promise!).
Another highlight is the support for the "Split core" functionality on
P8 by Michael. This allows a P8 core to be split into "sub cores" of
4 threads which allows the subcores to run different guests under KVM
(the HW still doesn't support a partition per thread).
And then the usual misc bits and fixes ..."

Add support for EBB (Event Based Branches) on 64-bit book3s. See the

EBBs are a feature which allows the hardware to branch directly to a
specified user space address when a PMU event overflows. This can be
used by programs for self-monitoring with no kernel involvement in the
inner loop.
Most of the logic is in the generic book3s code, primarily to avoid a

When in an active transaction that takes a signal, we need to be careful with
the stack. It's possible that the stack has moved back up after the tbegin.
The obvious case here is when the tbegin is called inside a function that
returns before a tend. In this case, the stack is part of the checkpointed
transactional memory state. If we write over this non transactionally or in
suspend, we are in trouble because if we get a tm abort, the program counter
and stack pointer will be back at the tbegin but our in memory stack won't be
valid anymore.
To avoid this, when taking a signal in an active transaction, we need to use
the stack pointer from the checkpointed state, rather than the speculated
state. This ensures that the signal context (written tm suspended) will be
written below the stack required for the rollback. The transaction is aborted
becuase of the treclaim, so any memory written between the tbegin and the
signal will be rolled back anyway.
For signals taken in non-TM or suspended mode, we use the
normal/non-checkpointed stack pointer.

If we are emulating an instruction inside an active user transaction that
touches memory, the kernel can't emulate it as it operates in transactional
suspend context. We need to abort these transactions and send them back to
userspace for the hardware to rollback.
We can service these if the user transaction is in suspend mode, since the
kernel will operate in the same suspend context.
This adds a check to all alignment faults and to specific instruction
emulations (only string instructions for now). If the user process is in an
active (non-suspended) transaction, we abort the transaction go back to
userspace allowing the HW to roll back the transaction and tell the user of the
failure. This also adds new tm abort cause codes to report the reason of the
persistent error to the user.

This adds new debug feature information so that the DAWR can be
identified by userspace tools like GDB.
Unfortunately the DAWR doesn't sit nicely into the current description
that ptrace provides to userspace via struct ppc_debug_info. It doesn't
allow for specifying that only some ranges are possible or even the end
alignment constraints (DAWR only allows 512 byte wide ranges which can't
cross a 512 byte boundary).
After talking to Edjunior Machado (GDB ppc developer), it was decided
this was the best approach. Just mark it as debug feature DAWR and
tools like GDB can internally decide the constraints.

PPC_PTRACE_GETHWDBGINFO, PPC_PTRACE_SETHWDEBUG and PPC_PTRACE_DELHWDEBUG are
PowerPC specific ptrace flags that use the watchpoint register. While they are
targeted primarily towards BookE users, user-space applications such as GDB
have started using them for BookS too. This patch enables the use of generic
hardware breakpoint interfaces for these new flags.
Apart from the usual benefits of using generic hw-breakpoint interfaces, these
changes allow debuggers (such as GDB) to use a common set of ptrace flags for
their watchpoint needs and allow more precise breakpoint specification (length
of the variable can be specified).

Information about the pagesize and read-only-status may also come from
the devicetree. Parse this data, too, and act accordingly. While we are
here, change the initialization printout a bit. write_max is useful to
know to detect performance bottlenecks, the rest is superfluous.

Add suspend/resume support for 4xx compatible CPUs.
See /sys/power/state for available power states configured in.
Add two different idle states (idle-wait and idle-doze) controlled via sysfs.
Default is idle-wait.
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/idle
[wait] doze
To save additional power, use idle-doze.
echo doze > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/idle
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/idle
wait [doze]

Manually fix up (non-data) conflict: the SCSI merge gad renamed the
'hw_sector_size' member to 'physical_block_size', and the USB tree
brought a new use of it.
Extends FSL EHCI platform driver glue layer to support
MPC5121 USB controllers. MPC5121 Rev 2.0 silicon EHCI
registers are in big endian format. The appropriate flags
are set using the information in the platform data structure.
MPC83xx system interface registers are not available on
MPC512x, so the access to these registers is isolated in
MPC512x case. Furthermore the USB controller clocks
must be enabled before 512x register accesses which is
done by providing platform specific init callback.
The MPC512x internal USB PHY doesn't provide supply voltage.
For boards using different power switches allow specifying
DRVVBUS and PWR_FAULT signal polarity of the MPC5121 internal
PHY using "fsl,invert-drvvbus" and "fsl,invert-pwr-fault"
properties in the device tree USB nodes. Adds documentation
for this new device tree bindings.

Below you will find an updated version from the original series bunching all patches into one big patch
updating broken web addresses that are located in Documentation/*
Some of the addresses date as far far back as 1995 etc... so searching became a bit difficult,
the best way to deal with these is to use web.archive.org to locate these addresses that are outdated.
Now there are also some addresses pointing to .spec files some are located, but some(after searching
on the companies site)where still no where to be found. In this case I just changed the address
to the company site this way the users can contact the company and they can locate them for the users.

This patch improves the recovery of the MPC's I2C bus from errors like bus
hangs resulting in timeouts:
1. make the bus timeout configurable, as it depends on the bus clock and
the attached slave chip(s); default is still 1 second;
2. detect any of the cases indicated by the CF, BB and RXAK MSR flags if a
timeout occurs, and add a missing (required) MAL reset;
3. use a more reliable method to fixup the bus if a hang has been detected.
The sequence is sent 9 times which seems to be necessary if a slave
"misses" more than one clock cycle. For 400 kHz bus speed, the fixup is
also ~70us (81us vs. 150us) faster.
Tested on a custom Lite5200b derived board, with a Dallas RTC, AD sensors
and NXP IO expander chips attached to the i2c.
Changes vs. v1:
- use improved bus fixup sequence for all chips (not only the 5200)
- calculate real clock from defaults if no clock is given in the device tree
- better description (I hope) of the changes.
I didn't split the changes in this file into three parts as recommended by
Grant, as they actually belong together (i.e. they address one single
problem, just in three places of one single source file).

Adds support for encoding display mode information
in the device tree using verbatim EDID block.
If the EDID entry in the DIU node is present, the
driver will build mode database using EDID data
and allow setting the display modes from this database.
Otherwise display mode will be set using mode
entries from driver's internal database as usual.
This patch also updates device tree bindings.

By setting "reset_type" to one of the following values, the default
software reset mechanism may be overidden. Here the possible values of
"reset_type":
1 - PPC4xx core reset
2 - PPC4xx chip reset
3 - PPC4xx system reset (default)

reset" instead of the default "system reset" to be asserted.
