Tarun Sahu cd5bd4b713 dax/kmem: Pass valid argument to memory_group_register_static
[ Upstream commit 46e66dab85 ]

memory_group_register_static takes maximum number of pages as the argument
while dev_dax_kmem_probe passes total_len (in bytes) as the argument.

IIUC, I don't see any crash/panic impact as such. As,
memory_group_register_static just set the max_pages limit which is used in
auto_movable_zone_for_pfn to determine the zone.

which might cause these condition to behave differently,

This will be true always so jump will happen to kernel_zone
    ...
    if (!auto_movable_can_online_movable(NUMA_NO_NODE, group, nr_pages))
        goto kernel_zone;

    ...
    kernel_zone:
        return default_kernel_zone_for_pfn(nid, pfn, nr_pages);

Here, In below, zone_intersects compare range will be larger as nr_pages
will be higher (derived from total_len passed in dev_dax_kmem_probe).

    ...
    static struct zone *default_kernel_zone_for_pfn(int nid, unsigned long start_pfn,
    		unsigned long nr_pages)
    {
    	struct pglist_data *pgdat = NODE_DATA(nid);
    	int zid;

    	for (zid = 0; zid < ZONE_NORMAL; zid++) {
    		struct zone *zone = &pgdat->node_zones[zid];

    		if (zone_intersects(zone, start_pfn, nr_pages))
    			return zone;
    	}

    	return &pgdat->node_zones[ZONE_NORMAL];
    }

Incorrect zone will be returned here, which in later time might cause bigger
problem.

Dan Williams 2a327c8c31 dax: Introduce alloc_dev_dax_id()
[ Upstream commit 70aab281e1 ]

The reference counting of dax_region objects is needlessly complicated,
has lead to confusion [1], and has hidden a bug [2]. Towards cleaning up
that mess introduce alloc_dev_dax_id() to minimize the holding of a
dax_region reference to only what dev_dax_release() needs, the
dax_region->ida.

Part of the reason for the mess was the design to dereference a
dax_region in all cases in free_dev_dax_id() even if the id was
statically assigned by the upper level dax_region driver. Remove the
need to call "is_static(dax_region)" by tracking whether the id is
dynamic directly in the dev_dax instance itself.

With that flag the dax_region pinning and release per dev_dax instance
can move to alloc_dev_dax_id() and free_dev_dax_id() respectively.

A follow-on cleanup address the unnecessary references in the dax_region
setup and drivers.

Dan Williams 34dbf5dd07 dax/kmem: Fix leak of memory-hotplug resources
commit e686c32590 upstream.

While experimenting with CXL region removal the following corruption of
/proc/iomem appeared.

Before:
f010000000-f04fffffff : CXL Window 0
  f010000000-f02fffffff : region4
    f010000000-f02fffffff : dax4.0
      f010000000-f02fffffff : System RAM (kmem)

After (modprobe -r cxl_test):
f010000000-f02fffffff : **redacted binary garbage**
  f010000000-f02fffffff : System RAM (kmem)

...and testing further the same is visible with persistent memory
assigned to kmem:

Before:
480000000-243fffffff : Persistent Memory
  480000000-57e1fffff : namespace3.0
  580000000-243fffffff : dax3.0
    580000000-243fffffff : System RAM (kmem)

After (ndctl disable-region all):
480000000-243fffffff : Persistent Memory
  580000000-243fffffff : ***redacted binary garbage***
    580000000-243fffffff : System RAM (kmem)

The corrupted data is from a use-after-free of the "dax4.0" and "dax3.0"
resources, and it also shows that the "System RAM (kmem)" resource is
not being removed. The bug does not appear after "modprobe -r kmem", it
requires the parent of "dax4.0" and "dax3.0" to be removed which
re-parents the leaked "System RAM (kmem)" instances. Those in turn
reference the freed resource as a parent.

First up for the fix is release_mem_region_adjustable() needs to
reliably delete the resource inserted by add_memory_driver_managed().
That is thwarted by a check for IORESOURCE_SYSRAM that predates the
dax/kmem driver, from commit:

65c7878413 ("kernel, resource: check for IORESOURCE_SYSRAM in release_mem_region_adjustable")

That appears to be working around the behavior of HMM's
"MEMORY_DEVICE_PUBLIC" facility that has since been deleted. With that
check removed the "System RAM (kmem)" resource gets removed, but
corruption still occurs occasionally because the "dax" resource is not
reliably removed.

The dax range information is freed before the device is unregistered, so
the driver can not reliably recall (another use after free) what it is
meant to release. Lastly if that use after free got lucky, the driver
was covering up the leak of "System RAM (kmem)" due to its use of
release_resource() which detaches, but does not free, child resources.
The switch to remove_resource() forces remove_memory() to be responsible
for the deletion of the resource added by add_memory_driver_managed().

Dan Williams 95d714d8ad devdax: Fix soft-reservation memory description
commit 67feaba413 upstream.

The "hmem" platform-devices that are created to represent the
platform-advertised "Soft Reserved" memory ranges end up inserting a
resource that causes the iomem_resource tree to look like this:

340000000-43fffffff : hmem.0
  340000000-43fffffff : Soft Reserved
    340000000-43fffffff : dax0.0

This is because insert_resource() reparents ranges when they completely
intersect an existing range.

This matters because code that uses region_intersects() to scan for a
given IORES_DESC will only check that top-level 'hmem.0' resource and
not the 'Soft Reserved' descendant.

So, to support EINJ (via einj_error_inject()) to inject errors into
memory hosted by a dax-device, be sure to describe the memory as
IORES_DESC_SOFT_RESERVED. This is a follow-on to:

commit b13a3e5fd4 ("ACPI: APEI: Fix _EINJ vs EFI_MEMORY_SP")

...that fixed EINJ support for "Soft Reserved" ranges in the first
instance.

auto-onlining be aware of the relationship of memory blocks.

Let's treat one probed unit as a single static memory device, similar to a

There is only a single user remaining. We can simply lookup the nid only
used for node offlining purposes when walking our memory blocks. We don't
expect to remove multi-nid ranges; and if we'd ever do, we most probably
don't care about removing multi-nid ranges that actually result in empty
nodes.

If ever required, we can detect the "multi-nid" scenario and simply try
offlining all online nodes.

Linus Torvalds c6c3c5704b Driver core update for 5.15-rc1
Here is the big set of driver core patches for 5.15-rc1.

 These do change a number of different things across different
 subsystems, and because of that, there were 2 stable tags created that
 might have already come into your tree from different pulls that did the
 following
 	- changed the bus remove callback to return void
 	- sysfs iomem_get_mapping rework

 The latter one will cause a tiny merge issue with your tree, as there
 was a last-minute fix for this in 5.14 in your tree, but the fixup
 should be "obvious". If you want me to provide a fixed merge for this,
 please let me know.

 Other than those two things, there's only a few small things in here:
 	- kernfs performance improvements for huge numbers of sysfs
 	  users at once
 	- tiny api cleanups
 	- other minor changes

 All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
 problems, other than the before-mentioned merge issue.

Uwe Kleine-König fc7a6209d5 bus: Make remove callback return void
The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there
is only little it can do when a device disappears.

This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several
buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback.
Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers
returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go
away.

With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly
implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate
wrong expectations for driver authors.

Uwe Kleine-König 0d519e0d52 dax-device: Make remove callback return void
The driver core ignores the return value of struct bus_type::remove()
because there is only little that can be done. To simplify the quest to
make this function return void, let struct dax_device_driver::remove()
return void, too. All users already unconditionally return 0, this commit
makes it obvious that returning an error code isn't intended.

Dan Williams a927bd6ba9 mm: fix phys_to_target_node() and memory_add_physaddr_to_nid() exports
The core-mm has a default __weak implementation of phys_to_target_node()
to mirror the weak definition of memory_add_physaddr_to_nid(). That
symbol is exported for modules. However, while the export in
mm/memory_hotplug.c exported the symbol in the configuration cases of:

	CONFIG_NUMA_KEEP_MEMINFO=y
	CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG=y

...and:

	CONFIG_NUMA_KEEP_MEMINFO=n
	CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG=y

...it failed to export the symbol in the case of:

	CONFIG_NUMA_KEEP_MEMINFO=y
	CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG=n

Not only is that broken, but Christoph points out that the kernel should
not be exporting any __weak symbol, which means that
memory_add_physaddr_to_nid() example that phys_to_target_node() copied
is broken too.

Rework the definition of phys_to_target_node() and
memory_add_physaddr_to_nid() to not require weak symbols. Move to the
common arch override design-pattern of an asm header defining a symbol
to replace the default implementation.

The only common header that all memory_add_physaddr_to_nid() producing
architectures implement is asm/sparsemem.h. In fact, powerpc already
defines its memory_add_physaddr_to_nid() helper in sparsemem.h.
Double-down on that observation and define phys_to_target_node() where
necessary in asm/sparsemem.h. An alternate consideration that was
discarded was to put this override in asm/numa.h, but that entangles
with the definition of MAX_NUMNODES relative to the inclusion of
linux/nodemask.h, and requires powerpc to grow a new header.

The dependency on NUMA_KEEP_MEMINFO for DEV_DAX_HMEM_DEVICES is invalid
now that the symbol is properly exported / stubbed in all combinations
of CONFIG_NUMA_KEEP_MEMINFO and CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG.

Dan Williams a455aa72f7 device-dax/kmem: fix resource release
The conversion to request_mem_region() is broken because it assumes that
the range is marked busy prior to release. However, due to the way that
the kmem driver manipulates the IORESOURCE_BUSY flag (clears it to let
{add,remove}_memory() handle busy) it requires a manual release_resource()
to perform cleanup.

Given that the actual 'struct resource *' needs to be recalled, not just
the range, add that tracking to the kmem driver-data.

Joao Martins 8490e2e25b device-dax: add a range mapping allocation attribute
Add a sysfs attribute which denotes a range from the dax region to be
allocated. It's an write only @mapping sysfs attribute in the format of
'<start>-<end>' to allocate a range. @start and @end use hexadecimal
values and the @pgoff is implicitly ordered wrt to previous writes to
@mapping sysfs e.g. a write of a range of length 1G the pgoff is
0..1G(-4K), a second write will use @pgoff for 1G+4K..<size>.

This range mapping interface is useful for:

 1) Application which want to implement its own allocation logic, and
    thus pick the desired ranges from dax_region.

 2) For use cases like VMM fast restart[0] where after kexec we want
    to the same gpa<->phys mappings (as originally created before kexec).

Dan Williams 6d82120f41 device-dax: add an 'align' attribute
Introduce a device align attribute. While doing so, rename the region
align attribute to be more explicitly named as so, but keep it named as
@align to retain the API for tools like daxctl.

Changes on align may not always be valid, when say certain mappings were
created with 2M and then we switch to 1G. So, we validate all ranges
against the new value being attempted, post resizing.

Joao Martins 33cf94d717 device-dax: make align a per-device property
Introduce @align to struct dev_dax.

When creating a new device, we still initialize to the default dax_region
@align. Child devices belonging to a region may wish to keep a different
alignment property instead of a global region-defined one.

Dan Williams 0b07ce872a device-dax: introduce 'mapping' devices
In support of interrogating the physical address layout of a device with
dis-contiguous ranges, introduce a sysfs directory with 'start', 'end',
and 'page_offset' attributes. The alternative is trying to parse
/proc/iomem, and that file will not reflect the extent layout until the
device is enabled.

Dan Williams 60e93dc097 device-dax: add dis-contiguous resource support
Break the requirement that device-dax instances are physically contiguous.
With this constraint removed it allows fragmented available capacity to
be fully allocated.

This capability is useful to mitigate the "noisy neighbor" problem with
memory-side-cache management for virtual machines, or any other scenario
where a platform address boundary also designates a performance boundary.
For example a direct mapped memory side cache might rotate cache colors at
1GB boundaries.  With dis-contiguous allocations a device-dax instance
could be configured to contain only 1 cache color.

It also satisfies Joao's use case (see link) for partitioning memory for
exclusive guest access. It allows for a future potential mode where the
host kernel need not allocate 'struct page' capacity up-front.
