Johan Hovold 62dcd9c59f earlycon: simplify earlycon-table implementation
Instead of using the array-of-pointers trick to avoid having gcc mess up
the earlycon array stride, specify type alignment when declaring entries
to prevent gcc from increasing alignment.

This is essentially an alternative (one-line) fix to the problem
addressed by commit dd709e72cb ("earlycon: Use a pointer table to fix
__earlycon_table stride").

gcc can increase the alignment of larger objects with static extent as
an optimisation, but this can be suppressed by using the aligned
attribute when declaring variables.

Note that we have been relying on this behaviour for kernel parameters
for 16 years and it indeed hasn't changed since the introduction of the
aligned attribute in gcc-3.1.

Michael Walle f8c3686c65 serial: earlycon: prefer EARLYCON_DECLARE() variant
If a driver exposes early consoles with EARLYCON_DECLARE() and
OF_EARLYCON_DECLARE(), pefer the non-OF variant if the user specifies it
by
  earlycon=<driver>,<options>

The rationale behind this is that some drivers register multiple setup
functions under the same driver name. Eg.

OF_EARLYCON_DECLARE(lpuart, "fsl,vf610-lpuart", lpuart_early_console_setup);
OF_EARLYCON_DECLARE(lpuart32, "fsl,ls1021a-lpuart", lpuart32_early_console_setup);
OF_EARLYCON_DECLARE(lpuart32, "fsl,imx7ulp-lpuart", lpuart32_imx_early_console_setup);
EARLYCON_DECLARE(lpuart, lpuart_early_console_setup);
EARLYCON_DECLARE(lpuart32, lpuart32_early_console_setup);

It depends on the order of the entries which console_setup() actually
gets called. To make things worse, I guess it also depends on the
compiler how these are ordered. Thus always prefer the EARLYCON_DECLARE()
ones.

Michal Simek 814453adea earlycon: Initialize port->uartclk based on clock-frequency property
On DT based platforms when current-speed property is present baudrate
is setup. Also port->uartclk is initialized to bogus BASE_BAUD * 16

uartclk is used for baudrate calculation.

The patch is reading optional clock-frequency property to replace bogus
BASE_BAUD * 16 calculation to have proper baudrate calculation.

Daniel Kurtz dd709e72cb earlycon: Use a pointer table to fix __earlycon_table stride
Commit 99492c39f3 ("earlycon: Fix __earlycon_table stride") tried to fix
__earlycon_table stride by forcing the earlycon_id struct alignment to 32
and asking the linker to 32-byte align the __earlycon_table symbol. This
fix was based on commit 07fca0e57f ("tracing: Properly align linker
defined symbols") which tried a similar fix for the tracing subsystem.

However, this fix doesn't quite work because there is no guarantee that
gcc will place structures packed into an array format. In fact, gcc 4.9
chooses to 64-byte align these structs by inserting additional padding
between the entries because it has no clue that they are supposed to be in
an array. If we are unlucky, the linker will assign symbol
"__earlycon_table" to a 32-byte aligned address which does not correspond
to the 64-byte aligned contents of section "__earlycon_table".

To address this same problem, the fix to the tracing system was
subsequently re-implemented using a more robust table of pointers approach
by commits:
 3d56e331b6 ("tracing: Replace syscall_meta_data struct array with pointer array")
 6549864629 ("tracepoints: Fix section alignment using pointer array")
 e4a9ea5ee7 ("tracing: Replace trace_event struct array with pointer array")

Let's use this same "array of pointers to structs" approach for
EARLYCON_TABLE.

updating comments, and changing parse_spcr() to acpi_parse_spcr(),
and earlycon_init_is_deferred to earlycon_acpi_spcr_enable to be
more descriptive.

On x86, many systems have a valid SPCR table but the table version is
not 2 so the table version check must be a warning.

On ARM64 when the kernel parameter earlycon is used both the early console

Eugeniy Paltsev 31cb9a8575 earlycon: initialise baud field of earlycon device structure
For now baud field of earlycon structure device is't initialised at all
in of_setup_earlycon (in oppositе to register_earlycon).

So when I use stdout-path to point earlycon device
(like stdout-path = &serial or stdout-path = "serial:115200n8")
baud field of earlycon device structure remains uninitialised and
earlycon initialization is not performed correctly as
of_setup_earlycon is used.
When pass all arguments via bootargs
(like bootargs = "earlycon=uart8250,mmio32,0xf0005000,115200n8")
initialization is performed correctly as register_earlycon is used.

So initialise baud field of earlycon device structure by value of

Currently, 8-bit (MMIO) and 32-bit (MMIO32) register interfaces are
supported for the 8250 console, but the 16-bit (MMIO16) is not.
The 8250 UART device on my board is connected to a 16-bit bus and
my main motivation is to use earlycon with it.

Initialize the spinlock in of_setup_earlycon() and register_earlycon(),
to fix this for both DT-based and legacy earlycon. If the driver would
reinitialize the spinlock again, this is harmless, as it's allowed to
reinitialize an unlocked spinlock.

Alternatives are:
  - Drivers having an early_serial_console_write() that only performs
    the core functionality of serial_console_write(), without acquiring
    the lock (which may be unsafe, depending on the hardware),
  - Drivers initializing the spinlock in their private earlycon setup
    functions.

As uart_port is owned by generic serial_core, and uart_port.lock is
initialized by uart_add_one_port() for the normal case, this can better
be handled in the earlycon core.

Peter Hurley 470ca0de69 serial: earlycon: Enable earlycon without command line param
Earlycon matching can only be triggered if 'earlycon=...' has been
specified on the kernel command line. To workaround this limitation
requires tight coupling between arches and specific serial drivers
in order to start an earlycon. Devicetree avoids this limitation
with a link table that contains the required data to match earlycons.

Mirror this approach for earlycon match by name. Re-purpose
EARLYCON_DECLARE to generate a table entry which associates name with
setup() function. Re-purpose setup_earlycon() to scan this table for
an earlycon match, which is registered if found.

Declare one "earlycon" early_param, which calls setup_earlycon().

This design allows setup_earlycon() to be called directly with a
param string (as if 'earlycon=...' had been set on the command line).
Re-registration (either directly or by early_param) is prevented.

Earlycon param strings of the form

Rob Herring 60efcf0414 tty/serial: fix 8250 early console option passing to regular console
In the conversion to generic early console, the passing of options from
the early 8250 console to the regular ttyS console was broken. This
resulted in the baud rate changing when switching consoles during boot.

This feature allows specifying a single console option on the kernel
command line rather than both an early console and regular serial tty
console. It would be nice to generalize this feature. However, it only
works if the correct baud rate can be probed early which is not the
case on many platforms which have non-standard UART clock rates. So for
now, this is left as an 8250 specific feature.
