I just learned that &struct_name.member_name works and looks pretty
even. It doesn't (yet) link to the member directly though, which would
be really good for big structures or vfunc tables (where the
per-member kerneldoc tends to be long).
Also some minor drive-by polish where it makes sense, I read a lot
of docs ...

The drm_core.h header contains a set of constants meant to be used
throughout DRM. However, as it turns out, they're each used just once and
don't bring any benefit. They're also grossly mis-named and lack
name-spacing. This patch inlines them, or moves them into drm_internal.h
as appropriate:
- CORE_AUTHOR and CORE_DESC are inlined into corresponding MODULE_*()
macros. It's just confusing having to follow 2 pointers when trying to
find the definition of these fields. Grep'ping for MODULE_AUTHOR()
should reveal the full information, if there's no strong reason not to.
- CORE_NAME, CORE_DATE, CORE_MAJOR, CORE_MINOR, and CORE_PATCHLEVEL are
inlined into the sysfs 'version' attribute. They're stripped
everywhere else (which is just some printk() statements). CORE_NAME
just doesn't make *any* sense, as we hard-code it in many places,
anyway. The other constants are outdated and just serve
binary-compatibility purposes. Hence, inline them in 'version' sysfs
attribute (we might even try dropping it..).
- DRM_IF_MAJOR and DRM_IF_MINOR are moved into drm_internal.h as they're
only used by the global ioctl handlers. Furthermore, versioning
interfaces breaks backports and as such is deprecated, anyway. We just
keep them for historic reasons. I doubt anyone will ever modify them
again.

The PM core introduced the ability to keep devices runtime suspended
during the entire system suspend/resume process with commit aae4518b31
("PM / sleep: Mechanism to avoid resuming runtime-suspended devices
unnecessarily"). Before this so-called "direct-complete" procedure was
introduced, devices were always runtime resumed only to be immediately
put to sleep again using their ->suspend hook. Direct-complete is
enabled by returning a positive value from the ->prepare hook. The PCI
core usually does this automatically.
Direct-complete is only available for a device if all children use it as
well. Currently we cannot support direct-complete for DRM drivers
because the DRM core automatically registers multiple DRM minors which
belong to device class drm_class, and drm_class uses a struct dev_pm_ops
which lacks the ->prepare callback.
While this could be solved by adding the missing ->prepare callback,
closer inspection shows that there are no DRM drivers left which declare
the legacy ->suspend and ->resume callbacks in their drm_driver struct.
The last ones to remove them were i915 with commit 1751fcf9f9
("drm/i915: Fix module initialisation, v2.") and exynos with commit
e7fefb1d5a ("drm/exynos: remove legacy ->suspend()/resume()").
Consequently the struct dev_pm_ops of drm_class is now dead code. Remove
it. If no dev_pm_ops is declared for a device, the PM core automatically
enables direct-complete for it, thereby making that mechanism available
to the parent DRM PCI devices.

DRM: add mode setting support
But it seems to be completely unused. Only i915 and nouveau even
register these properties, and the corresponding DDX don't even look
at them. Also the sysfs files are read-only, so not useful to
configure anything.
I suspect that this was added with the goal to have read-only access
to all properties in sysfs, but we never followed through on that.
Also, that should be done in a more generic fashion.
Since it would be real work to fix up the locking (with atomic we're
now chasing pointers when reading properties) and it seems unused lets
just nuke this all. It's easier. Of course we'll keep the properties
themselves, those are still exposed through the KMS ioctls.

To avoid even more code duplication punt this all to the probe worker,
which needs some slight adjustment to also generate a uevent when the
status has changed to due connector->force.
v2: Instead of running the output_poll_work (which is kinda the wrong
thing and a layering violation since it's an internal of the probe
helpers), or calling ->detect (which is again a layering violation
since it's used only by probe helpers) just call the official
->fill_modes function, like a GET_CONNECTOR ioctl call.

With atomic drivers we need to make sure that (at least in general)
property reads hold the right locks. But the legacy dpms property is
special and can be read locklessly. Since userspace loves to just
randomly look at that all the time (like with "status") do that.
To make it clear that we play tricks use the READ_ONCE compiler
barrier (and also for paranoia).
Note that there's not really anything bad going on since even with the
new atomic paths we eventually end up not chasing any pointers (and
hence possibly freed memory and other fun stuff). The locking WARNING
has been added in

Right now, drm_sysfs_create() returns the newly allocated "struct class"
to the caller (which is drm_core_init()), which then has to set the
global variable 'drm_class'. During cleanup, though, we call
drm_sysfs_destroy() which implicitly uses the global 'drm_class'. This is
confusing, as ownership of the global 'drm_class' is non-obvious.
This patch changes drm_sysfs_create() to drm_sysfs_init() and makes it
initialize the 'drm_class' object directly, rather than returning it.
This way, both drm_sysfs_init() and drm_sysfs_destroy() work in a similar
fashion and manage the global drm class.

Writing to a file is supposed to return the number of bytes written.
Returning zero unfortunately causes bash to constantly spin trying
to write to the sysfs file, to such an extent that even ^c and ^z
have no effect. The only way out of that is to kill the shell and
log back in. This isn't nice behaviour.
Fix it by returning the number of characters written to sysfs files.

Since the beginning, sysfs/connector/status has done a heavyweight
detection of the current connector status. But no user, such as upowerd
or logind, has ever desired to initiate a probe. Move the probing into a
new attribute so that existing readers get the behaviour they desire.
v2: David Herrmann suggested using "echo detect > /sys/.../status" to
trigger the probing, which is a fine idea. This extends that to also
allow the user to apply the force detection overrides at runtime.

Instead of manual calls of device_create_file() and
device_remove_file(), assign the static attribute groups to the device
with device_create_with_groups(). The conditionally built sysfs
entries are handled via is_visible callback.
This simplifies the code and also avoids the possible races.

For each minor we allocate a sysfs device as minor->kdev. Currently, this
is allocated and registered in drm_minor_register(). This makes it
impossible to add sysfs-attributes to the device before it is registered.
Therefore, they are not added atomically, nor can we move device_add()
*after* ->load() is called.
This patch makes minor->kdev available early, but only adds the device
during minor-registration. Note that the registration is still called
before ->load() as debugfs needs to be split, too. This will be fixed in
follow-ups.

The lifetime changes introduced in 5bdebb183c
tried to use device_create, however that led to the regression where dev->type
wasn't getting set correctly. First attempt at fixing it would have led to
a race, so this undoes the device_createa work and does it all manually
making sure the dev->type is setup before we register the device.

So drm was abusing device lifetimes, by having embedded device structures
in the minor and connector it meant that the lifetime of the internal drm
objects (drm_minor and drm_connector) were tied to the lifetime of the device
files in sysfs, so if something kept those files opened the current code
would kfree the objects and things would go downhill from there.
Now in reality there is no need for these lifetimes to be so intertwined,
especailly with hotplugging of devices where we wish to remove the sysfs
and userspace facing pieces before we can unwind the internal objects due
to open userspace files or mmaps, so split the objects out so the struct
device is no longer embedded and do what fbdev does and just allocate
and remove the sysfs inodes separately.

Convert drivers/gpu/drm class to use dev_pm_ops for power management and
remove Legacy PM ops hooks. With this change, drm class registers
suspend/resume callbacks via class->pm (dev_pm_ops) instead of Legacy
class->suspend/resume. When __device_suspend() runs call-backs, it will
find class->pm ops for the drm class.
drm_class_suspend() hook calls driver legacy ops with the state information.
e.g: drm_class_suspend() calls into driver suspend routines
via drm_dev->driver->suspend(drm_dev, state).
Once drm_class_suspend() is converted to dev_pm_ops, it will no longer
have access to pm_transition which it has to pass into driver legacy
suspend calls. A new freeze and suspend hooks are added to address the not
having access to the state information. The new freeze and suspend hooks
simply call __drm_class_suspend() with the appropriate pm state information.
__drm_class_suspend() is the original suspend hook with a new name.

Destructive load-detection is very expensive and due to failings
elsewhere can trigger system wide stalls of up to 600ms. A simple
first step to correcting this is not to invoke such an expensive
and destructive load-detection operation automatically.

In the original code we used "j" as an iterator but we used "i" as an
index.
- for (j = 0; j < i; j++)
- device_remove_file(&connector->kdev,
- &connector_attrs[i]);
Smatch complained about that because "i" was potentially passed the end of
the array. Which makes sense if we should be using "j" there.
I also thought that we should remove the files for &connector_attrs_opt1
but to do that I had to add separate iterators for &connector_attrs and
&connector_attrs_opt1.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.
