Prarit Bhargava 84e345e4e2 time, Fix setting of hardware clock in NTP code
At init time, if the system time is "warped" forward in warp_clock()
it will differ from the hardware clock by sys_tz.tz_minuteswest.  This time
difference is not taken into account when ntp updates the hardware clock,
and this causes the system time to jump forward by this offset every reboot.

The kernel must take this offset into account when writing the system time
to the hardware clock in the ntp code.  This patch adds
persistent_clock_is_local which indicates that an offset has been applied
in warp_clock() and accounts for the "warp" before writing the hardware
clock.

x86 does not have this problem as rtc writes are software limited to a
+/-15 minute window relative to the current rtc time.  Other arches, such
as powerpc, however do a full synchronization of the system time to the
rtc and will see this problem.

Jason Gunthorpe 023f333a99 NTP: Add a CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC configuration
The purpose of this option is to allow ARM/etc systems that rely on the
class RTC subsystem to have the same kind of automatic NTP based
synchronization that we have on PC platforms. Today ARM does not
implement update_persistent_clock and makes extensive use of the class
RTC system.

When enabled CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC will provide a generic
rtc_update_persistent_clock that stores the current time in the RTC and
is intended complement the existing CONFIG_RTC_HCTOSYS option that loads
the RTC at boot.

Like with RTC_HCTOSYS the platform's update_persistent_clock is used
first, if it works. Platforms with mixed class RTC and non-RTC drivers
need to return ENODEV when class RTC should be used. Such an update for
PPC is included in this patch.

Long term, implementations of update_persistent_clock should migrate to
proper class RTC drivers and use CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC instead.

Tested on ARM kirkwood and PPC405

John Stultz 6b1859dba0 ntp: Fix STA_INS/DEL clearing bug
In commit 6b43ae8a61, I
introduced a bug that kept the STA_INS or STA_DEL bit
from being cleared from time_status via adjtimex()
without forcing STA_PLL first.

Usually once the STA_INS is set, it isn't cleared
until the leap second is applied, so its unlikely this
affected anyone. However during testing I noticed it
took some effort to cancel a leap second once STA_INS
was set.

Richard Cochran dd48d708ff ntp: Correct TAI offset during leap second
When repeating a UTC time value during a leap second (when the UTC
time should be 23:59:60), the TAI timescale should not stop. The kernel
NTP code increments the TAI offset one second too late. This patch fixes
the issue by incrementing the offset during the leap second itself.

John Stultz 6b43ae8a61 ntp: Fix leap-second hrtimer livelock
Since commit 7dffa3c673 the ntp
subsystem has used an hrtimer for triggering the leapsecond
adjustment. However, this can cause a potential livelock.

Thomas diagnosed this as the following pattern:

This patch tries to avoid the problem by reverting back to not using
an hrtimer to inject leapseconds, and instead we handle the leapsecond
processing in the second_overflow() function.

The downside to this change is that on systems that support highres
timers, the leap second processing will occur on a HZ tick boundary,
(ie: ~1-10ms, depending on HZ)  after the leap second instead of
possibly sooner (~34us in my tests w/ x86_64 lapic).

This patch applies on top of tip/timers/core.

Sasha Levin a078c6d0e6 ntp: Fix integer overflow when setting time
'long secs' is passed as divisor to div_s64, which accepts a 32bit
divisor. On 64bit machines that value is trimmed back from 8 bytes
back to 4, causing a divide by zero when the number is bigger than
(1 << 32) - 1 and all 32 lower bits are 0.

Use div64_long() instead.

Richard Cochran 4352d9d44b ntp: fix non privileged system time shifting
The ADJ_SETOFFSET bit added in commit 094aa188 ("ntp: Add ADJ_SETOFFSET
mode bit") also introduced a way for any user to change the system time.
Sneaky or buggy calls to adjtimex() could set

    ADJ_OFFSET_SS_READ | ADJ_SETOFFSET

which would result in a successful call to timekeeping_inject_offset().
This patch fixes the issue by adding the capability check.

Richard Cochran db1c1cce4a ntp: Remove redundant and incorrect parameter check
The ADJ_SETOFFSET code redundantly checks the range of the nanoseconds
field of the time value. This field is checked again in the subsequent
call to timekeeping_inject_offset(). Also, as is, the check will not
detect whether the number of microseconds is out of range.

Let timekeeping_inject_offset() do the error checking.

Alexander Gordeev 025b40abe7 ntp: add hardpps implementation
This commit adds hardpps() implementation based upon the original one from
the NTPv4 reference kernel code from David Mills.  However, it is highly
optimized towards very fast syncronization and maximum stickness to PPS
signal.  The typical error is less then a microsecond.

To make it sync faster I had to throw away exponential phase filter so
that the full phase offset is corrected immediately.  Then I also had to
throw away median phase filter because it gives a bigger error itself if
used without exponential filter.

Maybe we will find an appropriate filtering scheme in the future but it's
not necessary if the signal quality is ok.

Miroslav Lichvar 8af3c153ba ntp: Clamp PLL update interval
Clamp update interval to reduce PLL gain with low sampling rate (e.g.
intermittent network connection) to avoid instability.

The clamp roughly corresponds to the loop time constant, it's 8 * poll
interval for SHIFT_PLL 2 and 32 * poll interval for SHIFT_PLL 4. This
gives good results without affecting the gain in normal conditions where
ntpd skips only up to seven consecutive samples.

Impact: change (fix) the way the NTP PLL seconds offset is initialized/tracked

Fix a bug and do a micro-optimization:

When PLL is enabled we do not reset time_reftime. If the PLL
was off for a long time (for example after bootup), this is
arguably the wrong thing to do.

We already had a hack for the common boot-time case in
ntp_update_offset(), in form of:

	if (unlikely(time_status & STA_FREQHOLD || time_reftime == 0))
 		secs = 0;

But the update delta should be reset later on too - not just when
the PLL is enabled for the first time after bootup.

So do it on !STA_PLL -> STA_PLL transitions.

This changes behavior, as previously if ntpd was disabled for
a long time and we restarted it, we'd run from that last update,
with a very large delta.

john stultz fdcedf7b75 time: apply NTP frequency/tick changes immediately
Since the GENERIC_TIME changes landed, the adjtimex behavior changed
for struct timex.tick and .freq changed. When the tick or freq value
is set, we adjust the tick_length_base in ntp_update_frequency().
However, this new value doesn't get applied to tick_length until the
next second (via second_overflow).

This means some applications that do quick time tweaking do not see the
requested change made as quickly as expected.

I've run a few tests with this change, and ntpd still functions fine.

Peter Zijlstra ca109491f6 hrtimer: removing all ur callback modes
Impact: cleanup, move all hrtimer processing into hardirq context

This is an attempt at removing some of the hrtimer complexity by
reducing the number of callback modes to 1.

This means that all hrtimer callback functions will be ran from HARD-irq
context.

I went through all the 30 odd hrtimer callback functions in the kernel
and saw only one that I'm not quite sure of, which is the one in
net/can/bcm.c - hence I'm CC-ing the folks responsible for that code.

Furthermore, the hrtimer core now calls callbacks directly with IRQs
disabled in case you try to enqueue an expired timer. If this timer is a
periodic timer (which should use hrtimer_forward() to advance its time)
then it might be possible to end up in an inf. recursive loop due to the
fact that hrtimer_forward() doesn't round up to the next timer
granularity, and therefore keeps on calling the callback - obviously
this needs a fix.

Aside from that, this seems to compile and actually boot on my dual core
test box - although I'm sure there are some bugs in, me not hitting any
makes me certain :-)

Roman Zippel d40e944c25 ntp: improve adjtimex frequency rounding
Change PPM_SCALE_INV_SHIFT so that it doesn't throw away any input bits
(19 is the amount of the factor 2 in PPM_SCALE), the output frequency
can then be calculated back to its input value, as the inverse divide
produce a slightly larger value, which is then correctly rounded by the
final shift.

Maciej W. Rozycki 4ff4b9e19a ntp: fix calculation of the next jiffie to trigger RTC sync
We have a bug in the calculation of the next jiffie to trigger the RTC
synchronisation.  The aim here is to run sync_cmos_clock() as close as
possible to the middle of a second.  Which means we want this function to
be called less than or equal to half a jiffie away from when now.tv_nsec
equals 5e8 (500000000).

If this is not the case for a given call to the function, for this purpose
instead of updating the RTC we calculate the offset in nanoseconds to the
next point in time where now.tv_nsec will be equal 5e8.  The calculated
offset is then converted to jiffies as these are the unit used by the
timer.

Hovewer timespec_to_jiffies() used here uses a ceil()-type rounding mode,
where the resulting value is rounded up.  As a result the range of
now.tv_nsec when the timer will trigger is from 5e8 to 5e8 + TICK_NSEC
rather than the desired 5e8 - TICK_NSEC / 2 to 5e8 + TICK_NSEC / 2.

As a result if for example sync_cmos_clock() happens to be called at the
time when now.tv_nsec is between 5e8 + TICK_NSEC / 2 and 5e8 to 5e8 +
TICK_NSEC, it will simply be rescheduled HZ jiffies later, falling in the
same range of now.tv_nsec again.  Similarly for cases offsetted by an
integer multiple of TICK_NSEC.

This change addresses the problem by subtracting TICK_NSEC / 2 from the
nanosecond offset to the next point in time where now.tv_nsec will be
equal 5e8, effectively shifting the following rounding in
timespec_to_jiffies() so that it produces a rounded-to-nearest result.

Thanks to the review by Michael Kerrisk a bug in the recent
ADJ_OFFSET_SS_READ option was discovered, where the ntp time_offset was
inadvertently set by it.  This fixes this by making the adjtime code
more separate from the ntp_adjtime code (both of which really want to
be separate syscalls).

Roman Zippel 7dffa3c673 ntp: handle leap second via timer
Remove the leap second handling from second_overflow(), which doesn't have to
check for it every second anymore.  With CONFIG_NO_HZ this also makes sure the
leap second is handled close to the full second.  Additionally this makes it
possible to abort a leap second properly by resetting the STA_INS/STA_DEL
status bits.

time_offset is already a 64bit value but its resolution barely used, so this
makes better use of it by replacing SHIFT_UPDATE with TICK_LENGTH_SHIFT.

Side note: the SHIFT_HZ in SHIFT_UPDATE was incorrect for CONFIG_NO_HZ and the
primary reason for changing time_offset to 64bit to avoid the overflow.

Roman Zippel 074b3b8794 ntp: increase time_freq resolution
This changes time_freq to a 64bit value and makes it static (the only outside
user had no real need to modify it).  Intermediate values were already 64bit,
so the change isn't that big, but it saves a little in shifts by replacing
SHIFT_NSEC with TICK_LENGTH_SHIFT.  PPM_SCALE is then used to convert between
user space and kernel space representation.

Roman Zippel eea83d896e ntp: NTP4 user space bits update
This adds a few more things from the ntp nanokernel related to user space.
It's now possible to select the resolution used of some values via STA_NANO
and the kernel reports in which mode it works (pll/fll).

If some values for adjtimex() are outside the acceptable range, they are now
simply normalized instead of letting the syscall fail.  I removed
MOD_CLKA/MOD_CLKB as the mapping didn't really makes any sense, the kernel
doesn't support setting the clock.

Roman Zippel f8bd2258e2 remove div_long_long_rem
x86 is the only arch right now, which provides an optimized for
div_long_long_rem and it has the downside that one has to be very careful that
the divide doesn't overflow.

The API is a little akward, as the arguments for the unsigned divide are
signed.  The signed version also doesn't handle a negative divisor and
produces worse code on 64bit archs.

There is little incentive to keep this API alive, so this converts the few
users to the new API.

The first version of the ntp_interval/tick_length inconsistent usage patch was
recently merged as bbe4d18ac2

While the fix did greatly improve the situation, it was correctly pointed out
by Roman that it does have a small bug: If the users change clocksources after
the system has been running and NTP has made corrections, the correctoins made
against the old clocksource will be applied against the new clocksource,
causing error.

The second attempt, which corrects the issue in the NTP_INTERVAL_LENGTH
definition has also made it up-stream as commit
e13a2e61dd

Roman has correctly pointed out that CLOCK_TICK_ADJUST is calculated
based on the PIT's frequency, and isn't really relevant to non-PIT
driven clocksources (that is, clocksources other then jiffies and pit).

This patch reverts both of those changes, and simply removes
CLOCK_TICK_ADJUST.

This does remove the granularity error correction for users of PIT and Jiffies
clocksource users, but the granularity error but for the majority of users, it
should be within the 500ppm range NTP can accommodate for.

For systems that have granularity errors greater then 500ppm, the
"ntp_tick_adj=" boot option can be used to compensate.

Michael Kerrisk reported that a long standing bug in the adjtimex()
system call causes glibc's adjtime(3) function to deliver the wrong
results if 'delta' is NULL.

add the ADJ_OFFSET_SS_READ API detail, which will be used by glibc
to fix this API compatibility bug.

David P. Reed fa6a1a554b ntp: fix typo that makes sync_cmos_clock erratic
Fix a typo in ntp.c that has caused updating of the persistent (RTC)
clock when synced to NTP to behave erratically.

When debugging a freeze that arises on my AMD64 machines when I
run the ntpd service, I added a number of printk's to monitor the
sync_cmos_clock procedure.  I discovered that it was not syncing to
cmos RTC every 11 minutes as documented, but instead would keep trying
every second for hours at a time.  The reason turned out to be a typo
in sync_cmos_clock, where it attempts to ensure that
update_persistent_clock is called very close to 500 msec. after a 1
second boundary (required by the PC RTC's spec). That typo referred to
"xtime" in one spot, rather than "now", which is derived from "xtime"
but not equal to it.  This makes the test erratic, creating a
"coin-flip" that decides when update_persistent_clock is called - when
it is called, which is rarely, it may be at any time during the one
second period, rather than close to 500 msec, so the value written is
needlessly incorrect, too.

Thomas Gleixner 746976a301 NTP: remove clock_was_set() call to prevent deadlock
The clock_was_set() call in seconds_overflow() which happens only when
leap seconds are inserted / deleted is wrong in two aspects:

1. it results in a call to on_each_cpu() with interrupts disabled
2. it is potential deadlock source vs. call_lock in smp_call_function()

The only possible side effect of the removal might be, that an absolute
CLOCK_REALTIME timer fires 1 second too late, in the rare case of leap
second deletion and an absolute CLOCK_REALTIME timer which expires in
the affected time frame. It will never fire too early.

This was probably observed by the reporter of a June 30th -> July 1st
hang: http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/7/3/103

A similar problem was observed by Dave Jones, who provided a screen shot
with a lockdep back trace, which allowed to analyse the problem.

First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.

This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
   getting them indirectly

Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
   they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
   on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
   after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

Cross-compile tested on

john stultz d62ac21aa0 [PATCH] ntp: avoid time_offset overflows
I've been seeing some odd NTP behavior recently on a few boxes and
finally narrowed it down to time_offset overflowing when converted to
SHIFT_UPDATE units (which was a side effect from my HZfreeNTP patch).

This patch converts time_offset from a long to a s64 which resolves the
issue.

Roman Zippel f199239373 [PATCH] ntp: convert to the NTP4 reference model
This converts the kernel ntp model into a model which matches the nanokernel
reference implementations.  The previous patches already increased the
resolution and precision of the computations, so that this conversion becomes
quite simple.

<linux@horizon.com> explains:

The original NTP kernel interface was defined in units of microseconds.
That's what Linux implements.  As computers have gotten faster and can now
split microseconds easily, a new kernel interface using nanosecond units was
defined ("the nanokernel", confusing as that name is to OS hackers), and
there's an STA_NANO bit in the adjtimex() status field to tell the application
which units it's using.

The current ntpd supports both, but Linux loses some possible timing
resolution because of quantization effects, and the ntpd hackers would really
like to be able to drop the backwards compatibility code.

Ulrich Windl has been maintaining a patch set to do the conversion for years,
but it's hard to keep in sync.

Roman Zippel 04b617e71e [PATCH] ntp: convert time_freq to nsec value
This converts time_freq to a scaled nsec value and adds around 6bit of extra
resolution.  This pushes the time_freq to its 32bit limits so the calculatons
have to be done with 64bit.

This folds update_ntp_one_tick() into second_overflow() and adds time_adjust
to the tick length, this makes time_next_adjust unnecessary.  This slightly
changes the adjtime() behaviour, instead of applying it to the next tick, it's
applied to the next second.
