This patch (as1177) modifies the USB core suspend and resume
routines. The resume functions now will take a pm_message_t argument,
so they will know what sort of resume is occurring. The new argument
is also passed to the port suspend/resume and bus suspend/resume
routines (although they don't use it for anything but debugging).
In addition, special pm_message_t values are used for user-initiated,
device-initiated (i.e., remote wakeup), and automatic suspend/resume.
By testing these values, drivers can tell whether or not a particular
suspend was an autosuspend. Unfortunately, they can't do the same for
resumes -- not until the pm_message_t argument is also passed to the
drivers' resume methods. That will require a bigger change.
IMO, the whole Power Management framework should have been set up this
way in the first place.

Optionally, a second GPIO can be used to control D+ pullup.

supplying "vbus_draw" and can enable/disable it or limit its

This patch (as1175) makes usb-storage set a SCSI device's
request-queue bounce limit such that all buffers will be located in
addressable memory (i.e., not in high memory) if the host controller's
dma_mask is NULL. This is necessary when the host controller doesn't
support DMA: If a buffer is in high memory then the both the virtual
and DMA addresses produced by the scatter-gather library will be NULL,
preventing the HCD from accessing the buffer's data.
In particular, the isp1760 driver needs this when used on a system
with more than 1 GB of memory.

which seems much more logical.
Also, the patch adds a call to usb_stop_pm() to the failure pathway,
so that the parent's count of unsuspended children will remain correct
if registration fails. In order for this to work properly, the code
to increment that count has to be moved forward, before the first
point where a failure can occur.

This patch introduces a new call to be able to do a USB reset from an
atomic contect. This is quite helpful in USB callbacks to handle
errors (when the only thing that can be done is to do a device
reset).
It is done queuing a work struct that will do the actual reset. The
struct is "attached" to an interface so pending requests from an
interface are removed when said interface is unbound from the driver.
The call flow then becomes:
usb_queue_reset_device()
__usb_queue_reset_device() [workqueue]
usb_reset_device()
usb_probe_interface()
usb_cancel_queue_reset() [error path]
usb_unbind_interface()
usb_cancel_queue_reset()
usb_driver_release_interface()
usb_cancel_queue_reset()
Note usb_cancel_queue_reset() needs smarts to try not to unqueue when
it is actually being executed. This happens when we run the reset from
the workqueue: usb_reset_device() is called and on interface unbind
time, usb_cancel_queue_reset() would be called. That would deadlock on
cancel_work_sync(). To avoid that, we set (before running
usb_reset_device()) usb_intf->reset_running and clear it inmediately
after returning.

A published errata for ppc440epx states, that when running Linux with
both EHCI and OHCI modules loaded, the EHCI module experiences a fatal
error when a high-speed device is connected to the USB2.0, and
functions normally if OHCI module is not loaded.
There used to be recommendation to use only hi-speed or full-speed
devices with specific conditions, when respective module was unloaded.
Later, it was observed that ohci suspend is enough to keep things
going, and it was turned into workaround, as explained below.
Quote from original descriprion:
The 440EPx USB 2.0 Host controller is an EHCI compliant controller. In
USB 2.0 Host controllers, each EHCI controller has one or more companion
controllers, which may be OHCI or UHCI. An USB 2.0 Host controller will
contain one or more ports. For each port, only one of the controllers
is connected at any one time. In the 440EPx, there is only one OHCI
companion controller, and only one USB 2.0 Host port.
All ports on an USB 2.0 controller default to the companion
controller. If you load only an ohci driver, it will have control of
the ports and any deviceplugged in will operate, although high speed
devices will be forced to operate at full speed. When an ehci driver
is loaded, it explicitly takes control of the ports. If there is a
device connected, and / or every time there is a new device connected,
the ehci driver determines if the device is high speed or not. If it
is high speed, the driver retains control of the port. If it is not,
the driver explicitly gives the companion controller control of the
port.
The is a software workaround that uses

This patch (as1161) changes the interface to
usb_lock_device_for_reset(). The existing interface is apparently not
very clear, judging from the fact that several of its callers don't
use it correctly. The new interface always returns 0 for success and
it always requires the caller to unlock the device afterward.
The new routine will not return immediately if it is called while the
driver's probe method is running. Instead it will wait until the
probe is over and the device has been unlocked. This shouldn't cause
any problems; I don't know of any cases where drivers call
usb_lock_device_for_reset() during probe.

The MicroSD card in the phone remains inaccessible and finally the
cell phone turns itself off. The patch solves this problem and makes
the cell phone fully accessible:

I've found necessary to use the FL_US_CAPACITY_FIX switch, as without
it the cell phone is recognized but it went berserk when performing
low-level functions on it (a fdisk -l /dev/uba for example).

PM: Simplify the new suspend/hibernation framework for devices
Following the discussion at the Kernel Summit, simplify the new
device PM framework by merging 'struct pm_ops' and
'struct pm_ext_ops' and removing pointers to 'struct pm_ext_ops'
from 'struct platform_driver' and 'struct pci_driver'.
After this change, the suspend/hibernation callbacks will only
reside in 'struct device_driver' as well as at the bus type/
device class/device type level. Accordingly, PCI and platform
device drivers are now expected to put their suspend/hibernation
callbacks into the 'struct device_driver' embedded in
'struct pci_driver' or 'struct platform_driver', respectively.

Fsync currently has a fdatawrite/fdatawait pair around the method call,
and a mutex_lock/unlock of the inode mutex. All callers of fsync have
to duplicate this, but we have a few and most of them don't quite get
it right. This patch adds a new vfs_fsync that takes care of this.
It's a little more complicated as usual as ->fsync might get a NULL file
pointer and just a dentry from nfsd, but otherwise gets afile and we
want to take the mapping and file operations from it when it is there.
Notes on the fsync callers:
- ecryptfs wasn't calling filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait on the
lower file
- coda wasn't calling filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait on the host
file, and returning 0 when ->fsync was missing
- shm wasn't calling either filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait nor
taking i_mutex. Now given that shared memory doesn't have disk
backing not doing anything in fsync seems fine and I left it out of
the vfs_fsync conversion for now, but in that case we might just
not pass it through to the lower file at all but just call the no-op
simple_sync_file directly.
[and now actually export vfs_fsync]

The underlying problem is that the device methods don't all correctly
handle disconnected status and some keep reporting bytes pending which
causes tcdrain to stall.

USB serial has always had races where the tty port usage count can hit zero
during a receive event. The internal locking is a mutex so we can't use
that in the IRQ handlers.

When a driver unbinds from an interface, usbcore always sends a
Set-Interface request to reinstall altsetting 0. Unforunately, quite
a few devices have buggy firmware that crashes when it receives this
request.

Greatly enhance the MAS allocator:
- Handle row and column reservations.
- Permit all the available MAS to be allocated.
- Follows the WiMedia rules on MAS selection.
Take appropriate action when reservation conflicts are detected.
- Correctly identify which reservation wins the conflict.
- Protect alien BP reservations.
- If an owned reservation loses, resize/move it.
- Follow the backoff procedure before requesting additional MAS.
When reservations are terminated, move the remaining reservations (if
necessary) so they keep following the MAS allocation rules.

ASL/PZL updates while the WUSB channel is inactive (i.e., the PZL and

whci-hcd module if a device is still connected (removing the device
does an endpoint_disable which results in an ASL update to remove the
qset).
If the WUSB channel is inactive the update can simply be skipped as the
WHC doesn't care about the state of the ASL/PZL.

There's a bug in the usbmon binary reader: When using read() to fetch
the packets and a packet's data is partially read, the next read call
will once again return up to len_cap bytes of data. The b_read counter
is not regarded when determining the remaining chunk size.
So, when dumping USB data with "cat /dev/usbmon0 > usbmon.trace" while
reading from a USB storage device and analyzing the dump file
afterwards it will get out of sync after a couple of packets.

The UWB radio manager coordinates the use of the radio between the
PALs that may be using it. PALs request use of the radio with
uwb_radio_start() and the radio manager will start beaconing if its
not already doing so. When the last PAL has called uwb_radio_stop()
beaconing will be stopped.
In the future, the radio manager will have a more sophisticated channel
selection algorithm, probably following the Channel Selection Policy
from the WiMedia Alliance when it is finalized. For now, channel 9
(BG1, TFC1) is selected.
The user may override the channel selected by the radio manager and may
force the radio to stop beaconing.
The WUSB Host Controller PAL makes use of this and there are two new
debug PAL commands that can be used for testing.

This fixes a deadlock appearing with some USB peripheral drivers
when running CDC ACM gadget code.
The newish (2.6.27) CDC ACM event notification mechanism sends
messages (IN to the host) which are short enough to fit in most
FIFOs. That means that with some peripheral controller drivers
(evidently not the ones used to verify the notification code!!)
the completion callback can be issued before queue() returns.
The deadlock would come because the completion callback and the
event-issuing code shared a spinlock. Fix is trivial: drop
that lock while queueing the message.

This patch (as1165) makes a few small changes in the logic used by
ehci-hcd when it encounters a controller error:
Instead of printing out the masked status, it prints the
original status as read directly from the hardware.
It doesn't check for the STS_HALT status bit before taking
action. The mere fact that the STS_FATAL bit is set means
that something bad has happened and the controller needs to
be reset. With the old code this test could never succeed
because the STS_HALT bit was masked out from the status.
I anticipate that this will prevent the occasional "irq X: nobody cared"

This patch (as1155) fixes a bug in usbcore. When interfaces are
deleted, either because the device was disconnected or because of a
configuration change, the extra attribute files and child endpoint
devices may get left behind. This is because the core removes them
before calling device_del(). But during device_del(), after the
driver is unbound the core will reinstall altsetting 0 and recreate
those extra attributes and children.
The patch prevents this by adding a flag to record when the interface
is in the midst of being unregistered. When the flag is set, the
attribute files and child devices will not be created.

need to remember to evict file from fasync lists; forgetting that

So let's keep our lives simple - let __fput() check FASYNC in

This patch (as1153) fixes a potential problem in hub initialization.
Starting in 2.6.28, initialization was split into several tasks to
help speed up booting. This opens the possibility that the hub may be
autosuspended before all the initialization tasks can complete.
Normally that wouldn't matter, but with incomplete initialization
there is a risk that the hub would never autoresume -- especially if
devices were plugged into the hub beforehand. The solution is a
simple one-line change to suppress autosuspend until the
initialization is finished.

This patch (as1151) protects usbcore against drivers that try to
unlink an URB after the URB's device or bus have been removed. The
core does not currently check for this, and certain drivers can cause
a crash if they are running while an HCD is unloaded.
Certainly it would be best to fix the guilty drivers. But a little
defensive programming doesn't hurt, especially since it appears that
quite a few drivers need to be fixed.
The patch prevents the problem by grabbing a reference to the device
while an unlink is in progress and using a new spinlock to synchronize
unlinks with device removal. (There's no need to acquire a reference
to the bus as well, since the device structure itself keeps a
reference to the bus.) In addition, the kerneldoc is updated to
indicate that URBs should not be unlinked after the disconnect method
returns.

This patch (as1152) may help prevent some problems associated with the
new policy of unbinding drivers that don't support suspend/resume or
pre_reset/post_reset. If for any reason the resume or reset fails, and
the device is logically disconnected, there's no point in trying to
rebind the driver. So the patch checks for success before carrying
out the unbind/rebind.
There was a report from one user that this fixed a problem he was
experiencing, but the details never became fully clear. In any case,
adding these tests can't hurt.

In this patch, we want to do one thing: add more Huawei product IDs into the
USB driver. Then it can support more Huawei data card devices. So to declare
the unusual device for new Huawei data card devices in unusual_devs.h and to
declare more new product IDs in option.c.
To modify the data value and length in the function of
usb_stor_huawei_e220_init in initializers.c That's because based on the USB
standard, while sending SET_FETURE_D to the device, it requires the
corresponding data to be zero, and its sending length also must be zero. In
our old solution, it can be compatible with our WCDMA data card devices, but
can not support our CDMA data card devices. But in this new solution, it can
be compatible with all of our data card devices.

This patch (as1149) fixes an obscure problem in OHCI polling. In the
current code, if the RHSC interrupt status flag turns on at a time
when RHSC interrupts are disabled, it will remain on forever:
The interrupt handler is the only place where RHSC status
gets turned back off;
The interrupt handler won't turn RHSC status off because it
doesn't turn off status flags if the corresponding interrupt
isn't enabled;
RHSC interrupts will never get enabled because
ohci_root_hub_state_changes() doesn't reenable RHSC if RHSC
status is on!
As a result we will continue polling indefinitely instead of reverting
to interrupt-driven operation, and the root hub will not autosuspend.
This particular sequence of events is not at all unusual; in fact
plugging a USB device into an OHCI controller will usually cause it to
occur.
Of course, this is a bug. The proper thing to do is to turn off RHSC
status just before reading the actual port status values. That way
either a port status change will be detected (if it occurs before the
status read) or it will turn RHSC back on. Possibly both, but that
won't hurt anything.
We can still check for systems in which RHSC is totally broken, by
re-reading RHSC after clearing it and before reading the port
statuses. (This re-read has to be done anyway, to post the earlier
write.) If RHSC is on but no port-change statuses are set, then we
know that RHSC is broken and we can avoid re-enabling it.

In case of error, the function isp1760_register returns an ERR
pointer, but never returns a NULL pointer. So after a call to this
function, a NULL test should be replaced by an IS_ERR test. Moreover,
we have noticed that:
(1) the result of isp1760_register is assigned through the function
pci_set_drvdata without an error test,
(2) if the call to isp1760_register fails, the current function
(isp1761_pci_probe) returns 0, and if it succeeds, it returns -ENOMEM,
which seems odd.
Thus, we suggest to move the test before the call to pci_set_drvdata
to correct (1), and to turn it into a non IS_ERR test to correct (2).
The semantic match that finds this problem is as follows:
// <smpl>
@bad_null_test@
expression x,E;
statement S1, S2;

ehci_watchdog will wake up CPU very frequently so that CPU
stays at C3 very short, average residence time is about 50

This patch (as1140) adds a little intelligence to the interrupt-URB
scheduler in uhci-hcd. Right now the scheduler is stupid; every URB
having the same period is assigned to the same slot. Thus a large
group of period-N URBs can fill their slot and cause -ENOSPC errors
even when all the lower-period slots are empty.
With the patch, if an URB doesn't fit in its assigned slot then the
scheduler will try using lower-period slots. This will provide
greater flexibility. As an example, the driver will be able to handle
more than just three or four mice, which the current driver cannot.

s3c2410_udc driver gadget register function. Instead of
checking if speed asked for was USB_LOW_SPEED upon
usb_gadget_register() to deny service, it checked only
for USB_FULL_SPEED, thus denying service to usb high
speed capable gadgets (like g_ether).

usbmon registers the notifier chain, takes the bus lock and then goes to
scan the existing devices for hooking up.
Unfortunately, if usb_mon gets initialized while USB bus discovery is
going on, it's possible that usbmon gets a notifier on one cpu (which runs
without USB locks), and the scan is going on and also finds the new bus,
resulting in a double sysfs registration, which then produces a WARNING.

This patch (as1137) changes the hub_activate() routine, replacing the
power-power-up and debounce delays with delayed_work calls. The idea
is that on systems where the USB stack is compiled into the kernel
rather than built as modules, these delays will no longer block the
boot thread. At least 100 ms is saved for each root hub, which can
add up to a significant savings in total boot time.
Arjan van de Ven was very pleased to see that this shaved 700 ms off
his computer's boot time. Since his total boot time is on the order
of two seconds, the improvement is considerable.

This patch is based on the following ideas:
1. Some usb devices (such as usb video class) have endpoints of high
interval attribute, so reading "periodic" file need more debug buffer
to accommodate the qh or itd schedule information. For example, 4KB
buffer is not enough for a single interrupt qh of 2ms period.
2. print a %p need 16 byte buffer on 64-bits arch, but 8 byte on 32-bits
arch. Add a extra bonus for 64-bits arch.

This patch (as1134) attempts to improve the way we handle OHCI
controllers with broken Root Hub Status Change interrupt support. In
these controllers the RHSC interrupt bit essentially never turns off,
making RHSC interrupts useless -- they have to remain permanently
disabled.
Such controllers should still be allowed to turn off their root hubs
when no devices are attached. Polling for new connections can
continue while the root hub is suspended. The patch implements this
feature. (It won't have much effect unless CONFIG_PM is enabled and
CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND is disabled, but since the overhead is very small
we may as well do it.)

This patch (as1118) addresses a problem with certain USB mass-storage
devices. These devices sometimes return less data than asked for and
then provide no sense data to explain the problem. Currently
usb-storage leaves it up to the SCSI layer to decide how this should
be handled, and the SCSI layer interprets the lack of sense data to
mean that nothing went wrong. But if we got less data than required
then something definitely _did_ go wrong, and we should say so.
The patch tells the SCSI layer to retry the command when this sort of
thing happens. Retrying may not solve the underlying problem, but
it's better than believing that data was transferred when it wasn't.

Add a new mechanism to the composite gadget framework, letting
functions deactivate (and reactivate) themselves. Think of it
as a refcounted wrapper for the software pullup control.
A key example of why to use this mechanism involves functions that
require a userspace daemon. Those functions shuld use this new
mechanism to prevent the gadget from enumerating until those daemons
are activated. Without this mechanism, hosts would see devices that
malfunction until the relevant daemons start.

[This version fixes a thinko in the r8a66597 driver]
This patch let a few discrete USB host controllers drivers (isp116x-hcd,
r8a66597-hcd and sl811-hcd) obtain IRQ flags from their IORESOURCE_IRQ
resource if configured as such, much like it's been done for the smc91x
driver.
It spares people writing support for specific boards the burden to
configure the interrupt controller independantly, and keeps all IRQ
related information in a single resource.
HCD that are integrally part of a SoC have been left aside, as there
is probably no "wiring" options...

This patch removes the private check for the termios_initialized for
the pl2303 usb driver. It forced the baud to 9600 on the first call
to pl2303_set_termios()
Based on the tty changes in the 2.6.27 kernel, the termios passed to
the *_set_termios functions is always populated the first time.
This means there is no need to privately initialize the settings the
first time, and doing so will not allow the use of the kernel
