The getpid() function is called in a couple of places in bpftool to
craft links of the shape "/proc/<pid>/...". Instead, it is possible to
use the "/proc/self/" shortcut, which makes things a bit easier, in
particular in jit_disasm.c.
Do the replacement, and remove the includes of <sys/types.h> from the
relevant files, now we do not use getpid() anymore.

Commit b12d6ec097 ("bpf: btf: add btf print functionality")
added btf pretty print functionality to bpftool.
There is a problem though in printing a bitfield whose type
has modifiers.
For example, for a type like

Suppose we have a map

and the hash table is populated with one element with
key 0 and value (.a = 1 and .b = 2).
In BTF, the struct member "b" will have a type "typedef" which
points to an int type. The current implementation does not
pass the bit offset during transition from typedef to int type,
hence incorrectly print the value as

This patch fixed the issue by carrying bit_offset along the type
chain during bit_field print. The correct result can be printed as

The kernel pretty print is implemented correctly and does not
have this issue.

to get a btf structure given a map_info. This patch
refactored this function to be function btf_get_from_id()
in tools/lib/bpf so that it can be used later.

Make it possible to build bpftool without libbfd. libbfd and libopcodes are
typically provided in dev/dbg packages (binutils-dev in debian) which we
usually don't have installed on the fleet machines and we'd like a way to have
bpftool version that works without installing any additional packages.
This excludes support for disassembling jit-ted code and prints an error if
the user tries to use these features.

This commit adds support for loading/attaching/detaching flow
dissector program.
When `bpftool loadall` is called with a flow_dissector prog (i.e. when the
'type flow_dissector' argument is passed), we load and pin all programs.
User is responsible to construct the jump table for the tail calls.
The last argument of `bpftool attach` is made optional for this use
case.

This patch adds new *loadall* command which slightly differs from the
existing *load*. *load* command loads all programs from the obj file,
but pins only the first programs. *loadall* pins all programs from the
obj file under specified directory.
The intended usecase is flow_dissector, where we want to load a bunch
of progs, pin them all and after that construct a jump table.

Function open_obj_pinned() prints error messages when it fails to open a
link in the BPF virtual file system. However, in some occasions it is
not desirable to print an error, for example when we parse all links
under the bpffs root, and the error is due to some paths actually being
symbolic links.

Edit the documentation of the -f|--bpffs option to make it explicit that
it dumps paths of pinned programs when bpftool is used to list the
programs only, so that users do not believe they will see the name of
the newly pinned program with "bpftool prog pin" or "bpftool prog load".
Also fix the plain output: do not add a blank line after each program
block, in order to remain consistent with what bpftool does when the
option is not passed.

Function getline() returns -1 on failure to read a line, thus creating
an infinite loop in get_fdinfo() if the key is not found. Fix it by
calling the function only as long as we get a strictly positive return
value.
Found by copying the code for a key which is not always present...

The limit for memory locked in the kernel by a process is usually set to
64 kbytes by default. This can be an issue when creating large BPF maps
and/or loading many programs. A workaround is to raise this limit for
the current process before trying to create a new BPF map. Changing the
hard limit requires the CAP_SYS_RESOURCE and can usually only be done by
root user (for non-root users, a call to setrlimit fails (and sets
errno) and the program simply goes on with its rlimit unchanged).
There is no API to get the current amount of memory locked for a user,
therefore we cannot raise the limit only when required. One solution,
used by bcc, is to try to create the map, and on getting a EPERM error,
raising the limit to infinity before giving another try. Another
approach, used in iproute2, is to raise the limit in all cases, before
trying to create the map.
Here we do the same as in iproute2: the rlimit is raised to infinity
before trying to load programs or to create maps with bpftool.

When trying to complete "bpftool map update" commands, the call to
printf would print an error message that would show on the command line
if no map is found to complete the command line.
Fix it by making sure we have map ids to complete the line with, before
we try to print something.

When batch mode is used and all commands succeeds, bpftool prints the
number of commands processed to stderr. There is no particular reason to
use stderr for this, we could as well use stdout. It would avoid getting
unnecessary output on stderr if the standard ouptut is redirected, for
example.

Names used to pin eBPF programs and maps under the eBPF virtual file
system cannot contain a dot character, which is reserved for future
extensions of this file system.
Document this in bpftool man pages to avoid users getting confused if
pinning fails because of a dot.

Simplify bpf_perf_event_read_simple() a bit and fix up some minor
things along the way: the return code in the header is not of type
int but enum bpf_perf_event_ret instead. Once callback indicated
to break the loop walking event data, it also needs to be consumed
in data_tail since it has been processed already.
Moreover, bpf_perf_event_print_t callback should avoid void * as
we actually get a pointer to struct perf_event_header and thus
applications can make use of container_of() to have type checks.
The walk also doesn't have to use modulo op since the ring size is
required to be power of two.

The nfp driver is currently always JITing the BPF for 4 context/thread
mode of the NFP flow processors. Tell this to the disassembler,
otherwise some registers may be incorrectly decoded.

Add a way of creating maps from user space. The command takes
as parameters most of the attributes of the map creation system
call command. After map is created its pinned to bpffs. This makes
it possible to easily and dynamically (without rebuilding programs)
test various corner cases related to map creation.
Map type names are taken from bpftool's array used for printing.
In general these days we try to make use of libbpf type names, but
there are no map type names in libbpf as of today.
As with most features I add the motivation is testing (offloads) :)

Multiple map definition structures exist and user may have non-zero
fields in their definition that are not recognized by bpftool and
libbpf. The normal behavior is to then fail loading the map. Although
this is a good default behavior users may still want to load the map
for debugging or other reasons. This patch adds a --mapcompat flag
that can be used to override the default behavior and allow loading
the map even when it has additional non-zero fields.
For now the only user is 'bpftool prog' we can switch over other
subcommands as needed. The library exposes an API that consumes
a flags field now but I kept the original API around also in case
users of the API don't want to expose this. The flags field is an
int in case we need more control over how the API call handles
errors/features/etc in the future.

Sock map/hash introduce support for attaching programs to maps. To
date I have been doing this with custom tooling but this is less than
ideal as we shift to using bpftool as the single CLI for our BPF uses.
This patch adds new sub commands 'attach' and 'detach' to the 'prog'
command to attach programs to maps and then detach them.

should follow good practices in library design and implementation to
play well with third party code that uses it.
One of such practices is to have a common prefix (or a few) for every
interface, function or data structure, library provides. I helps to
avoid name conflicts with other libraries and keeps API consistent.
Inconsistent names in libbpf already cause problems in real life. E.g.
an application can't use both libbpf and libnl due to conflicting
symbols.
Having common prefix will help to fix current and avoid future problems.
libbpf already uses the following prefixes for its interfaces:
* bpf_ for bpf system call wrappers, program/map/elf-object
abstractions and a few other things;
* btf_ for BTF related API;
* libbpf_ for everything else.
The patch adds libbpf_ prefix to interfaces in nlattr.h that use none of
mentioned above prefixes and doesn't fit well into the first two
categories.
Since affected part of API is used in bpftool, the patch applies

Print `bpftool net` output to stdout instead of stderr. Only errors
should be printed to stderr. Regular output should go to stdout and this
is what all other subcommands of bpftool do, including --json and
--pretty formats of `bpftool net` itself.

This is a followup patch for Commit f6f3bac08f
("tools/bpf: bpftool: add net support").
Some improvements are made for the bpftool net output.
Specially, plain output is more concise such that
per attachment should nicely fit in one line.
Compared to previous output, the prog tag is removed
since it can be easily obtained with program id.
Similar to xdp attachments, the device name is added
to tc attachments.
The bpf program attached through shared block
mechanism is supported as well.

The documentation and "bpftool net help" are updated
to make it clear that current implementation only
supports xdp and tc attachments. For programs
attached to cgroups, "bpftool cgroup" can be used
to dump attachments. For other programs e.g.
sk_{filter,skb,msg,reuseport} and lwt/seg6,
iproute2 tools should be used.

Currently, prog array map and map of maps are not supported
in bpftool. This patch added the support.
Different from other map types, for prog array map and
map of maps, the key returned bpf_get_next_key() may not
point to a valid value. So for these two map types,
no error will be printed out when such a scenario happens.
The following is the plain and json dump if btf is not available:

Add "bpftool net" support. Networking devices are enumerated
to dump device index/name associated with xdp progs.
For each networking device, tc classes and qdiscs are enumerated
in order to check their bpf filters.
In addition, root handle and clsact ingress/egress are also checked for
bpf filters. Not all filter information is printed out. Only ifindex,
kind, filter name, prog_id and tag are printed out, which are good
enough to show attachment information. If the filter action
is a bpf action, its bpf program id, bpf name and tag will be
printed out as well.

When command line parsing fails in the while loop in do_event_pipe()
because the number of arguments is incorrect or because the keyword is
unknown, an error message is displayed, but bpftool remains stuck in
the loop. Make sure we exit the loop upon failure.

I hit the following problem when I tried to use bpftool
to dump a percpu array.
$ sudo ./bpftool map show

Further debugging revealed that this is due to
miscommunication between bpftool and kernel.
For example, for the above percpu_array with value size of 4B.
The map info returned to user space has value size of 4B.
In bpftool, the values array for lookup is allocated like:
info->value_size * get_possible_cpus() = 4 * get_possible_cpus()
In kernel (kernel/bpf/syscall.c), the values array size is
rounded up to multiple of 8.
round_up(map->value_size, 8) * num_possible_cpus()
= 8 * num_possible_cpus()
So when kernel copies the values to user buffer, the kernel will
overwrite beyond user buffer boundary.
This patch fixed the issue by allocating and stepping through
percpu map value array properly in bpftool.

Arguments of 'pin' subcommand should be checked
at the very beginning of do_pin_any().
Otherwise segfault errors can occur when using
'map pin' or 'prog pin' commands, so fix it.

bpftool does not export features it probed for, i.e.
FEATURE_DUMP_EXPORT is always empty, so don't try to communicate
the features to libbpf. It has no effect.

This patch augments the output of bpftool's map dump and map lookup
commands to print data along side btf info, if the correspondin btf
info is available. The outputs for each of map dump and map lookup
commands are augmented in two ways:
1. when neither of -j and -p are supplied, btf-ful map data is printed
whose aim is human readability. This means no commitments for json- or
backward- compatibility.
2. when either -j or -p are supplied, a new json object named
"formatted" is added for each key-value pair. This object contains the
same data as the key-value pair, but with btf info. "formatted" object
promises json- and backward- compatibility. Below is a sample output.

This consumes functionality exported in the previous patch. It does the
main job of printing with BTF data. This is used in the following patch
to provide a more readable output of a map's dump. It relies on

This patch uses json's {} and [] to imply struct/union and array. More
explicit information can be added later. For example, a command line
option can be introduced to print whether a key or value is struct
or union, name of a struct etc. This will however come at the expense
of duplicating info when, for example, printing an array of structs.
enums are printed as ints without their names.

Provide a new Makefile.helpers in tools/bpf, in order to build and
install the man page for eBPF helpers. This Makefile is also included in
the one used to build bpftool documentation, so that it can be called
either on its own (cd tools/bpf && make -f Makefile.helpers) or from
bpftool directory (cd tools/bpf/bpftool && make doc, or
cd tools/bpf/bpftool/Documentation && make helpers).
Makefile.helpers is not added directly to bpftool to avoid changing its
Makefile too much (helpers are not 100% directly related with bpftool).
But the possibility to build the page from bpftool directory makes us
able to package the helpers man page with bpftool, and to install it
along with bpftool documentation, so that the doc for helpers becomes
easily available to developers through the "man" program.

reallocarray() is a safer variant of realloc which checks for
multiplication overflow in case of array allocation. Since it's
not available in Glibc < 2.26 import kernel's overflow.h and
add a static inline implementation when needed. Use feature
detection to probe for existence of reallocarray.

bpf_prog_load() is a very useful helper but it doesn't give us full
flexibility of modifying the BPF objects before loading. Open code
bpf_prog_load() in bpftool so we can add extra logic in following
commits.

Sometimes program section names don't match with libbpf's expectation.
In particular XDP's default section names differ between libbpf and
iproute2. Allow users to pass program type on command line. Name
the types like the libbpf expected section names.

This commit introduces a new bpftool command: cgroup tree.
The idea is to iterate over the whole cgroup tree and print
all attached programs.
I was debugging a bpf/systemd issue, and found, that there is
no simple way to listen all bpf programs attached to cgroups.
I did master something in bash, but after some time got tired of it,
and decided, that adding a dedicated bpftool command could be
a better idea.
So, here it is:

Commit 4bfe3bd3cc ("tools/bpftool: use version from the kernel
source tree") added version to bpftool. The version used is
equal to the kernel version and obtained by running make kernelversion
against kernel source tree. Version is then communicated
to the sources with a command line define set in CFLAGS.
Use a simply expanded variable for the version, otherwise the
recursive make will run every time CFLAGS are used.
This brings the single-job compilation time for me from almost
16 sec down to less than 4 sec.

Remembering to close all descriptors and free memory may not seem
important in a user space tool like bpftool, but if we were to run
in batch mode the consumed resources start to add up quickly. Make

do_pin_fd() will already print out an error message if something
goes wrong. Printing another error is unnecessary and will break
JSON output, since error messages are full objects:

BPF program load time is reported from the kernel relative to boot time.
If conversion to wall clock does not take nanosecond parts into account,
the load time reported by bpftool may differ by one second from run to
run. This means JSON object reported by bpftool for a program will
randomly change.

Commit b04df400c3 ("tools/bpftool: add perf subcommand")
introduced bpftool subcommand perf to query bpf program
kuprobe and tracepoint attachments.
The perf subcommand will first test whether bpf subcommand
BPF_TASK_FD_QUERY is supported in kernel or not. It does it
by opening a file with argv[0] and feeds the file descriptor
and current task pid to the kernel for querying.
Such an approach won't work if the argv[0] cannot be opened
successfully in the current directory. This is especially
true when bpftool is accessible through PATH env variable.
The error below reflects the open failure for file argv[0]
at home directory.

Error: perf_query_support: No such file or directory
To fix the issue, let us open root directory ("/")
which exists in every linux system. With the fix, the
error message will correctly reflect the permission issue.

Error: perf_query_support: Operation not permitted

Currently, we resolve the callee's address for a JITed function
call by using the imm field of the call instruction as an offset
from __bpf_call_base. If bpf_jit_kallsyms is enabled, we further
use this address to get the callee's kernel symbol's name.
For some architectures, such as powerpc64, the imm field is not
large enough to hold this offset. So, instead of assigning this
offset to the imm field, the verifier now assigns the subprog
id. Also, a list of kernel symbol addresses for all the JITed
functions is provided in the program info. We now use the imm
field as an index for this list to lookup a callee's symbol's
address and resolve its name.

trace_helpers "library". Consolidate them and move the code
to libbpf. Return codes from trace_helpers are kept, but
renamed to include LIBBPF prefix.

Ask the kernel to include sample time in each even instead of
reading the clock. This is also more accurate because our
clock reading was done when user space would dump the buffer,
not when sample was produced.

Users of BPF sooner or later discover perf_event_output() helpers
and BPF_MAP_TYPE_PERF_EVENT_ARRAY. Dumping this array type is
not possible, however, we can add simple reading of perf events.
Create a new event_pipe subcommand for maps, this sub command
will only work with BPF_MAP_TYPE_PERF_EVENT_ARRAY maps.

Instead of spelling [hex] BYTES everywhere use DATA as keyword
for generalized value. This will help us keep the messages
concise when longer command are added in the future. It will
also be useful once BTF support comes. We will only have to
change the definition of DATA.

To make eBPF program load time easier to parse from "bpftool prog"
output for machines, change the time format used by the program. The
format now differs for plain and JSON version:
- Plain version uses a string formatted according to ISO 8601.
- JSON uses the number of seconds since the Epoch, wich is less friendly
for humans but even easier to process.

bpftool uses hexadecimal values when it dumps map contents:

In order to lookup or update values with bpftool, the natural reflex is
then to copy and paste the values to the command line, and to try to run
something like:
# bpftool map update id 1337 key ff 13 37 ff \
value 00 00 00 00 00 00 1a 2b
Error: error parsing byte: ff
bpftool complains, because it uses strtoul() with a 0 base to parse the
bytes, and that without a "0x" prefix, the bytes are considered as
decimal values (or even octal if they start with "0").
To feed hexadecimal values instead, one needs to add "0x" prefixes
everywhere necessary:
# bpftool map update id 1337 key 0xff 0x13 0x37 0xff \
value 0 0 0 0 0 0 0x1a 0x2b
To make it easier to use hexadecimal values, add an optional "hex"
keyword to put after "key" or "value" to tell bpftool to consider the
digits as hexadecimal. We can now do:
# bpftool map update id 1337 key hex ff 13 37 ff \
value hex 0 0 0 0 0 0 1a 2b
Without the "hex" keyword, the bytes are still parsed according to
normal integer notation (decimal if no prefix, or hexadecimal or octal
if "0x" or "0" prefix is used, respectively).
The patch also add related documentation and bash completion for the
"hex" keyword.

Fun set of conflict resolutions here...
For the mac80211 stuff, these were fortunately just parallel
adds. Trivially resolved.
In drivers/net/phy/phy.c we had a bug fix in 'net' that moved the
function phy_disable_interrupts() earlier in the file, whilst in
'net-next' the phy_error() call from this function was removed.
In net/ipv4/xfrm4_policy.c, David Ahern's changes to remove the
'rt_table_id' member of rtable collided with a bug fix in 'net' that
added a new struct member "rt_mtu_locked" which needs to be copied
over here.
The mlxsw driver conflict consisted of net-next separating
the span code and definitions into separate files, whilst
a 'net' bug fix made some changes to that moved code.
The mlx5 infiniband conflict resolution was quite non-trivial,
the RDMA tree's merge commit was used as a guide here, and
here are their notes:

Due to bug fixes found by the syzkaller bot and taken into the for-rc
branch after development for the 4.17 merge window had already started
being taken into the for-next branch, there were fairly non-trivial
merge issues that would need to be resolved between the for-rc branch
