This is a third approach to workaround long standing issue with LPSS on
BayTrail. First one [1] was reverted since it didn't resolve the issue
comprehensively. Second one [2] was rejected by internal review.
The LPSS DMA controller does not have neither _PS0 nor _PS3 method. Moreover it
can be powered off automatically whenever the last LPSS device goes down. In
case of no power any access to the DMA controller will hang the system. The
behaviour is reproduced on some HP laptops based on Intel BayTrail [3,4] as
well as on ASuS T100TA transformer.
Power on the LPSS island through the registers accessible in a specific way.

acpi_video_handles_brightness_key_presses() may use an uninitialized mutex.
The error has been reported by lockdep: DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON(l->magic != l).
The function assumes that the video driver has been registered before being
called. As explained in the comment of acpi_video_init(), the registration
of the video class may be defered and thus may not take place in the init
function of the module.
Use completion mechanisms to make sure that
acpi_video_handles_brightness_key_presses() wait for the completion of
acpi_video_register() before using the mutex.
Also get rid of register_count since task completion can replace it.

Commit f06147f9fb (ACPICA: Hardware: Enable firmware waking vector
for both 32-bit and 64-bit FACS) added three functions that aren't
present in upstream ACPICA, acpi_hw_set_firmware_waking_vectors(),
acpi_set_firmware_waking_vectors() and acpi_set_firmware_waking_vector64(),
to allow Linux to use the previously existing API for setting the
platform firmware waking vector.
However, that wasn't necessary, since the ACPI sleep support code
in Linux can be modified to use the upstream ACPICA's API easily
and the additional functions may be dropped which reduces the code
size and puts the kernel's ACPICA code more in line with the upstream.
Make the changes as per the above. While at it, make the relevant
function desctiption comments reflect the upstream ACPICA's ones.

ACPICA commit 1cf1a1e090f61f0c27f1dcf1905c7cc79a9c51c8
It is likely that we should synchronously invoke _REG(DISCONNECT) only when
the acpi_remove_address_space_handler() is invoked because of dependencies.
If it is invoked when the object is not referenced, problem may occur
if the operation region fields accessed in _REG are no longer driven by any
device driver.
Noticed that _REG(CONNECT)/_REG(DISCONNECT) only mean to inform the AML of
the handler availability, no return value is required for the caller.
This patch only introduces ACPI_REG_DISCONNECT invaocation, but doesn't
introduce a real change. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 31178590dde82368fdb0f6b0e466b6c0add96c57
We can ensure no early _REG evaluations by ensuring the following rules in
acpi_ev_execute_reg_method():
1. If an address space handler is installed during early stage,
_REG(CONNECT) evaluations are blocked. This is achieved using
acpi_gbl_reg_methods_enabled which is renamed from
acpi_gbl_reg_methods_executed.
2. If _REG(CONNECT) has never been evalauted for the region object,
_REG(DISCONNECT) evaluations are blocked. This is achieved by a new
region object flag: AOPOBJ_REG_CONNECTED.
Note that, after applying this patch, we can ensure _REG(DISCONNECT) is
always paired to _REG(CONNECT). Lv Zheng

ACPICA commit 75c0da9e796bdf9bdd46d75f028a3e1779903214
In the error logs and debugger outputs, use new external path format that
does not contain a trailing underscore.
This patch takes care of acpi_ns_get_external_pathname() invocations, chaning
them into acpi_ns_get_normalized_pathname(TRUE) where possible. Along with some
error log fixes, the following debugger commands are fixed: resources,
handlers, paths. Lv Zheng.

The patch reduces source code differences between the Linux kernel and the
ACPICA upstream so that the linuxized ACPICA 20151218 release can be
applied with reduced human intervention.
The pscode.c has already been out of sync for months, and it becomes more
and more difficult to merge pscode.c changes, so instead of update the
affected lines of pscode.c, this patch synchronizes entire pscode.c file.

The Dell Vostro V131 has an especially broken acpi-video implementation.
The backlight control bits work, but when the brightness is changed via
the acpi-video interface the backlight flickers annoyingly before settling
at the new brightness, switching to using the native interface fixes the
flickering so add a quirk for this (the vendor interface has the same
problem).
Brightness keypresses reported through the acpi-video-bus are also broken,
they get reported one event delayed, so if you press the brightness-up
hotkey on the keyboard nothing happens, then if you press brightness-down,
the previous brightness-up event gets reported. Since the keypresses are
also reported via wmi (if active) and via atkbd (when wmi is not active)
add a quirk to simply filter out the delayed (broken) events.

Add a module option to disable the reporting of keypresses, in some buggy
firmware implementatinon, the reported events are wrong. E.g. they lag
reality by one event in the case triggering the writing of this patch.
In this case it is better to not forward these wrong events to userspace
(esp.) when there is another source of the same events which is not buggy.
Note this is only intended to work around implementations which send
events which are plain wrong. In some cases we get double events, e.g.
from both acpi-video and the atkbd driver, in this case acpi-video is
considered the canonical source, and the events from the other source
should be filtered (using e.g. /lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-keyboard.hwdb).

Several drivers want to know if the acpi-video is generating key-presses
for brightness change hotkeys to avoid sending double key-events to
userspace for these. Currently these driver use this construct for this:
if (acpi_video_get_backlight_type() == acpi_backlight_vendor)
report_brightness_key_event();
This indirect way of detecting if acpi-video is active does not make the
code easier to understand, and in some cases it is wrong because just
because the preferred type != vendor does not mean that acpi-video is
actually listening for brightness events, e.g. there may be no acpi-video
bus on the system at all.
This commit adds a acpi_video_handles_brightness_key_presses() helper
function, making the code needing this functionality both easier to read
and more correct.

The ACPI compiler uses the extended format when used interrupt numbers

However, due to used data structure type; the code silently truncates

reconfiguring the penalty array as a dynamic list to remove this

A new penalty linklist has been added for all other interrupts greater than
16. If an IRQ is not found in the link list, an IRQ info structure will be
dynamically allocated on the first access and will be placed on the list
for further reuse. The list will grow by the number of supported interrupts
in the ACPI table rather than having a 256 hard limitation.

ACPICA commit 11522d6b894054fc4d62dd4f9863ec151296b386
The ACPI_DEBUGGER_EXEC is a problem now when the debugger code is compiled
but runtime disabled. They actually will get executed in this situation.
Although such executions are harmless if we can correctly make
acpi_db_single_step() a runtime stub, users may still do not want to see the
debugger print messages logged into OSPMs' kernel logs when a debugger
driver is not loaded to enable the debugger during runtime.
This patch fixes this issue by introducing new stub mechanism instead of
ACPI_DEBUGGER_EXEC. Lv Zheng.

The following mechanisms are OSPM specific:
1. Redirect output destination to console: no file redirection will be
needed by an in-kernel debugger, there is even no file can be accessed
when the debugger is running in the kernel mode.
2. Output command prompts: programs other than acpiexec can have different
prompt characters and the prompt characters may be implemented as a
special character sequence to form a char device IO protocol.
3. Command ready/complete handshake: OSPM debugger may wait more conditions
to implement OSPM specific semantics (for example, FIFO full/empty
conditions for O_NONBLOCK or IO open/close conditions).
Leaving such OSPM specific stuffs in the ACPICA debugger core blocks
Linux debugger IO driver implementation.
Several new OSL APIs are provided by this patch:
1. acpi_os_initialize_command_signals: initialize command handshake mechanism
or any other OSPM specific stuffs.
2. acpi_os_terminate_command_signals: reversal of
acpi_os_initialize_command_signals.
3. acpi_os_wait_command_ready: putting debugger task into wait state when a
command is not ready. OSPMs can terminate command loop by returning
AE_CTRL_TERMINATE from this API. Normally, wait_event() or
wait_for_multiple_object() may be used to implement this API.
4. acpi_os_notify_command_complete: putting user task into running state when a
command has been completed. OSPMs can terminate command loop by
returning AE_CTRL_TERMINATE from this API. Normally, wake_up() or
set_event() may be used to implement this API.
This patch also converts current command signaling implementation into a
generic debugger layer (osgendbg.c) to be used by the existing OSPMs or
acpiexec, in return, Linux can have chance to implement its own command
handshake mechanism. This patch also implements acpiexec batch mode in a
multi-threading mode comaptible style as a demo (this can be confirmed by
configuring acpiexec into DEBUGGER_MULTI_THREADED mode where the batch mode
is still working). Lv Zheng.
Note that the OSPM specific command handshake mechanism is required by
Linux kernel because:
1. Linux kernel trends to use wait queue to synchronize two threads, using
mutexes to achieve that will cause false "dead lock" warnings.
2. The command handshake mechanism implemented by ACPICA is implemented in
this way because of a design issue in debugger IO streaming. Debugger IO
outputs are simply cached using a giant buffer, this should be tuned by
Linux in the future.

acpi_pci_root_create, but the conversion missed on code piece in
arch/x86/pci/bus_numa.c, which causes regression on some legacy
AMD platforms as reported by Arthur Marsh <arthur.marsh@internode.on.net>.
The root causes is that acpi_pci_root_create() fails to insert

x86_pci_root_bus_resources() has already inserted those resources.
So change x86_pci_root_bus_resources() to not insert resources into

When support for _FIT was added, the code presumed that the data

starts with an acpi_table_header. However, the _FIT is defined
to return a data in the format of a series of NFIT type structure
entries and as a method, has an acpi_object header rather tahn
an acpi_table_header.
To address the differences, explicitly save the acpi_table_header

Some ACPI node's _STA will touch operation region field, since the
evaluation of _STA in acpi_bus_type_and_status is very early, the
operation region handler is not ready yet. Instead of fail that function
and not creating the acpi_device node consequently, set status to 0 so
that later when the driver for that device is probing, it can find
the acpi_device node and proceed normally. And at that time, the
handler for the operation region is ready and its _STA evaluation will
succeed, its present status can be checked there.
Even there will be no driver using this node later, it doesn't seem
hurt to have one more acpi_device node created with status set to 0.
This happens on Microsoft Surface 3, where the SPI device node NTRG's
_STA touches GPIO fields and the SPI core driver will only enumerate SPI
devices from ACPI if the acpi_device node is 1: created; 2: _STA
indicates it's present.
Note that due to another problem in SPI driver, for NTRG to be actually
enumerated, some changes have to be made in the SPI layer, which is
addressed by Mika(not send out yet):

In the SBS initialisation, a reentrant call to wait_event_timeout()
causes an intermittent boot stall of several minutes usually following
the "Switching to clocksource tsc" message. Another symptom of this bug
is high CPU usage from programs (Firefox, upowerd) querying the battery
state. This is caused by:
1. drivers/acpi/sbshc.c wait_transaction_complete() calls
wait_event_timeout():
if (wait_event_timeout(hc->wait, smb_check_done(hc),
msecs_to_jiffies(timeout)))
2. ___wait_event sets task state to uninterruptible
3. ___wait_event calls the "condition" smb_check_done()
4. smb_check_done (sbshc.c) calls through to ec_read() in
drivers/acpi/ec.c
5. ec_guard() is reached which calls wait_event_timeout()
if (wait_event_timeout(ec->wait,
ec_transaction_completed(ec),
guard))
ie. wait_event_timeout() is being called again inside evaluation of
the previous wait_event_timeout() condition
5. The EC IRQ handler calls wake_up() and wakes up the sleeping task in
ec_guard()
6. The task is now in state running even though the wait "condition" is
still being evaluated
7. The "condition" check returns false so ___wait_event calls
schedule_timeout()
8. Since the task state is running, the scheduler immediately schedules
it again
9. This loop usually repeats for around 250 seconds even though the
original wait_event_timeout was only 1000ms.
The timeout is incorrect because each call to schedule_timeout()
usually returns immediately, taking less than 1ms, so the jiffies
timeout counter is not decremented. The task is now stuck in a
running state, and so is highly likely to be immediately
rescheduled, which takes less than a jiffy. The loop will never exit
if all schedule_timeout() calls take less than a jiffy.
Fix this by replacing SMBus reads in the wait_event_timeout condition
with checks of a boolean value that is updated by the EC query handler.

notable for what it does not contain, than what it does. There were a
handful of development topics this cycle, dax get_user_pages, dax

for 4.5.
The patches to make devm and the pmem driver NUMA aware have been in

- ACPICA update to upstream revision 20150930 (Bob Moore, Lv Zheng).
The most significant change is to allow the AML debugger to be
built into the kernel. On top of that there is an update related
to the NFIT table (the ACPI persistent memory interface)
and a few fixes and cleanups.
- ACPI CPPC2 (Collaborative Processor Performance Control v2)
support along with a cpufreq frontend (Ashwin Chaugule).
This can only be enabled on ARM64 at this point.
- New ACPI infrastructure for the early probing of IRQ chips and
clock sources (Marc Zyngier).
- Support for a new hierarchical properties extension of the ACPI
_DSD (Device Specific Data) device configuration object allowing
the kernel to handle hierarchical properties (provided by the
platform firmware this way) automatically and make them available
to device drivers via the generic device properties interface
(Rafael Wysocki).
- Generic device properties API extension to obtain an index of
certain string value in an array of strings, along the lines of
of_property_match_string(), but working for all of the supported
firmware node types, and support for the "dma-names" device
property based on it (Mika Westerberg).
- ACPI core fix to parse the MADT (Multiple APIC Description Table)
entries in the order expected by platform firmware (and mandated
by the specification) to avoid confusion on systems with more than
255 logical CPUs (Lukasz Anaczkowski).
- Consolidation of the ACPI-based handling of PCI host bridges
on x86 and ia64 (Jiang Liu).
- ACPI core fixes to ensure that the correct IRQ number is used to
represent the SCI (System Control Interrupt) in the cases when
it has been re-mapped (Chen Yu).
- New ACPI backlight quirk for Lenovo IdeaPad S405 (Hans de Goede).
- ACPI EC driver fixes (Lv Zheng).
- Assorted ACPI fixes and cleanups (Dan Carpenter, Insu Yun, Jiri
Kosina, Rami Rosen, Rasmus Villemoes).
- New mechanism in the PM core allowing drivers to check if the
platform firmware is going to be involved in the upcoming system
suspend or if it has been involved in the suspend the system is
resuming from at the moment (Rafael Wysocki).
This should allow drivers to optimize their suspend/resume
handling in some cases and the changes include a couple of users
of it (the i8042 input driver, PCI PM).
- PCI PM fix to prevent runtime-suspended devices with PME enabled
from being resumed during system suspend even if they aren't
configured to wake up the system from sleep (Rafael Wysocki).
- New mechanism to report the number of a wakeup IRQ that woke up
the system from sleep last time (Alexandra Yates).
- Removal of unused interfaces from the generic power domains
framework and fixes related to latency measurements in that
code (Ulf Hansson, Daniel Lezcano).
- cpufreq core sysfs interface rework to make it handle CPUs that
share performance scaling settings (represented by a common
cpufreq policy object) more symmetrically (Viresh Kumar).
This should help to simplify the CPU offline/online handling among
other things.
- cpufreq core fixes and cleanups (Viresh Kumar).
- intel_pstate fixes related to the Turbo Activation Ratio (TAR)
mechanism on client platforms which causes the turbo P-states
range to vary depending on platform firmware settings (Srinivas
Pandruvada).
- intel_pstate sysfs interface fix (Prarit Bhargava).
- Assorted cpufreq driver (imx, tegra20, powernv, integrator) fixes
and cleanups (Bai Ping, Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz, Shilpasri G
Bhat, Luis de Bethencourt).
- cpuidle mvebu driver cleanups (Russell King).
- OPP (Operating Performance Points) framework code reorganization
to make it more maintainable (Viresh Kumar).
- Intel Broxton support for the RAPL (Running Average Power Limits)
power capping driver (Amy Wiles).
- Assorted power management code fixes and cleanups (Dan Carpenter,
Geert Uytterhoeven, Geliang Tang, Luis de Bethencourt, Rasmus
Villemoes).

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-4.4-rc1-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"Quite a new features are included this time.
First off, the Collaborative Processor Performance Control interface
(version 2) defined by ACPI will now be supported on ARM64 along with
a cpufreq frontend for CPU performance scaling.
Second, ACPI gets a new infrastructure for the early probing of IRQ
chips and clock sources (along the lines of the existing similar
mechanism for DT).
Next, the ACPI core and the generic device properties API will now
support a recently introduced hierarchical properties extension of the
_DSD (Device Specific Data) ACPI device configuration object. If the
ACPI platform firmware uses that extension to organize device
properties in a hierarchical way, the kernel will automatically handle
it and make those properties available to device drivers via the
generic device properties API.
It also will be possible to build the ACPICA's AML interpreter
debugger into the kernel now and use that to diagnose AML-related
problems more efficiently. In the future, this should make it
possible to single-step AML execution and do similar things.
Interesting stuff, although somewhat experimental at this point.
Finally, the PM core gets a new mechanism that can be used by device
drivers to distinguish between suspend-to-RAM (based on platform
firmware support) and suspend-to-idle (or other variants of system
suspend the platform firmware is not involved in) and possibly
optimize their device suspend/resume handling accordingly.
In addition to that, some existing features are re-organized quite
substantially.
First, the ACPI-based handling of PCI host bridges on x86 and ia64 is
unified and the common code goes into the ACPI core (so as to reduce
code duplication and eliminate non-essential differences between the
two architectures in that area).
Second, the Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework is
reorganized to make the code easier to find and follow.
Next, the cpufreq core's sysfs interface is reorganized to get rid of
the "primary CPU" concept for configurations in which the same
performance scaling settings are shared between multiple CPUs.
Finally, some interfaces that aren't necessary any more are dropped
from the generic power domains framework.
On top of the above we have some minor extensions, cleanups and bug
fixes in multiple places, as usual.
Specifics:
- ACPICA update to upstream revision 20150930 (Bob Moore, Lv Zheng).
The most significant change is to allow the AML debugger to be
built into the kernel. On top of that there is an update related
to the NFIT table (the ACPI persistent memory interface) and a few
fixes and cleanups.
- ACPI CPPC2 (Collaborative Processor Performance Control v2) support
along with a cpufreq frontend (Ashwin Chaugule).
- ACPI core fix to parse the MADT (Multiple APIC Description Table)
entries in the order expected by platform firmware (and mandated by
the specification) to avoid confusion on systems with more than 255
logical CPUs (Lukasz Anaczkowski).
- Consolidation of the ACPI-based handling of PCI host bridges on x86
and ia64 (Jiang Liu).
- ACPI core fixes to ensure that the correct IRQ number is used to
represent the SCI (System Control Interrupt) in the cases when it
has been re-mapped (Chen Yu).
This should allow drivers to optimize their suspend/resume handling
in some cases and the changes include a couple of users of it (the
i8042 input driver, PCI PM).
- PCI PM fix to prevent runtime-suspended devices with PME enabled
from being resumed during system suspend even if they aren't
configured to wake up the system from sleep (Rafael Wysocki).
- New mechanism to report the number of a wakeup IRQ that woke up the
system from sleep last time (Alexandra Yates).
- Removal of unused interfaces from the generic power domains
framework and fixes related to latency measurements in that code
(Ulf Hansson, Daniel Lezcano).
- cpufreq core sysfs interface rework to make it handle CPUs that
share performance scaling settings (represented by a common cpufreq
policy object) more symmetrically (Viresh Kumar).
This should help to simplify the CPU offline/online handling among
other things.
- cpufreq core fixes and cleanups (Viresh Kumar).
- intel_pstate fixes related to the Turbo Activation Ratio (TAR)
mechanism on client platforms which causes the turbo P-states range
to vary depending on platform firmware settings (Srinivas
Pandruvada).
- intel_pstate sysfs interface fix (Prarit Bhargava).
- Assorted cpufreq driver (imx, tegra20, powernv, integrator) fixes
and cleanups (Bai Ping, Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz, Shilpasri G
Bhat, Luis de Bethencourt).
- cpuidle mvebu driver cleanups (Russell King).
- OPP (Operating Performance Points) framework code reorganization to
make it more maintainable (Viresh Kumar).
- Intel Broxton support for the RAPL (Running Average Power Limits)
power capping driver (Amy Wiles).
- Assorted power management code fixes and cleanups (Dan Carpenter,
Geert Uytterhoeven, Geliang Tang, Luis de Bethencourt, Rasmus
Villemoes)"

Add a .notify callback to the acpi_nfit_driver that gets called on a
hotplug event. From this, evaluate the _FIT ACPI method which returns
the updated NFIT with handles for the hot-plugged NVDIMM.
Iterate over the new NFIT, and add any new tables found, and
register/enable the corresponding regions.
In the nfit test framework, after normal initialization, update the NFIT
with a new hot-plugged NVDIMM, and directly call into the driver to
update its view of the available regions.

The firmware of ESPRIMO Mobile M9410 has two video output devices that
have _BCM control method, one is the type of "External Digital Monitor"
while the other is the type of "Internal/Integrated Digital Flat Panel".
Only the 2nd video output device's _BCM control method works, but
since we have created two and the 1st one got picked up by user space,
the backlight functionality is broken. To solve this problem, only
register backlight interface for "Internal/Integrated Digital Flat Panel"
type video output device on this laptop.
Another problem of this laptop is that the IDs listed by the _DOD method
doesn't have bit 31 set, which means it doesn't follow the format
specified by ACPI spec. But the value indicates that it actually follows
that format so I've added a DMI quirk and a module level parameter to
force use the device_id_scheme so that we can get the video output
device's type to do the decision if we should register backlight
interface.

For an ACPI compatible system, the SCI (ACPI System Control
Interrupt) is used to wake the system up from suspend-to-idle.
Once the CPU is woken up by the SCI, the interrupt handler will
first check if the current IRQ has been configured for system
wakeup, so irq_pm_check_wakeup() is invoked to validate the IRQ
number. However, during suspend-to-idle, enable_irq_wake() is
called for acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt, although the IRQ number
that the SCI handler has been installed for should be passed to
it instead. Thus, if acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt happens to be
different from that number, ACPI interrupts will not be able to
wake up the system from sleep.
Fix this problem by passing the IRQ number returned by
acpi_gsi_to_irq() to enable_irq_wake() instead of
acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt.

Currently when the system is trying to uninstall the ACPI interrupt
handler, it uses acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt as the IRQ number.
However, the IRQ number that the ACPI interrupt handled is installed
for comes from acpi_gsi_to_irq() and that is the number that should
be used for the handler removal.
Fix this problem by using the mapped IRQ returned from acpi_gsi_to_irq()
as appropriate.

This patch enables ACPICA debugger files using a configurable
CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUGGER configuration item. Those debugger related code that
was originally masked as ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE now gets unmasked.
Necessary OSL stubs are also added in this patch:
1. acpi_os_readable(): This should be arch specific in Linux, while this
patch doesn't introduce real implementation and a complex mechanism to
allow architecture specific acpi_os_readable() to be implemented to
validate the address. It may be done by future commits.
2. acpi_os_get_line(): This is used to obtain debugger command input. This
patch only introduces a simple KDB concept example in it and the
example should be co-working with the code implemented in
acpi_os_printf(). Since this KDB example won't be compiled unless
ENABLE_DEBUGGER is defined and it seems Linux has already stopped to
use ENABLE_DEBUGGER, thus do not expect it can work properly.
This patch also cleans up all other ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE surroundings
accordingly.
1. Since linkage error can be automatically detected, declaration in the
headers needn't be surrounded by ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE.
So only the following separate exported fuction bodies are masked by
this macro (other exported fucntions may have already been masked at
entire module level via drivers/acpi/acpica/Makefile):
acpi_install_exception_handler()
acpi_subsystem_status()
acpi_get_system_info()
acpi_get_statistics()
acpi_install_initialization_handler()
2. Since strip can automatically zap the no-user functions, functions that
are not marked with ACPI_EXPORT_SYMBOL() needn't get surrounded by
ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE.
So the following function which is not used by Linux kernel now won't
get surrounded by this macro:
acpi_ps_get_name()

When the debugger is running in the kernel mode, acpi_db_single_step() may
also be invoked by the kernel runtime code path but the single stepping
command prompt may be erronously logged as the kernel logs and runtime code
path cannot proceed.
This patch fixes this issue by adding acpi_gbl_db_thread_id for the debugger
thread and preventing acpi_db_single_step() to be invoked from other threads.
It is not suitable to add acpi_thread_id parameter for acpi_os_execute() as
the function may be implemented as work queue on some hosts. So it is
better to let the hosts invoke acpi_set_debugger_thread_id(). Currently
acpiexec is not configured as DEBUGGER_MULTI_THREADED, but we can do this.
When we do this, it is better to invoke acpi_set_debugger_thread_id() in
acpi_os_execute() when the execution type is OSL_DEBUGGER_MAIN_THREAD. The
support should look like:
create_thread(&tid);
if (type == OSL_DEBUGGER_MAIN_THREAD)
acpi_set_debugger_thread_id(tid);
resume_thread(tid);
Similarly, semop() may be used for pthread implementation. But this patch
simply skips debugger thread ID check for application instead of
introducing such complications as there is no need to skip
acpi_db_single_step() for an application debugger - acpiexec.
Note that the debugger thread ID can also be used by acpi_os_printf() to
filter out debugger output. Lv Zheng.

The quit/exit commands shouldn't invoke acpi_terminate_debugger() and
acpi_terminate() right in the user command loop, because when the debugger
exits, the kernel ACPI subsystem shouldn't be terminated (acpi_terminate())
and the debugger should only be terminated by its users
(acpi_terminate_debugger()) rather than being terminated itself. Leaving such
invocations causes kernel panic when the debugger is shipped in the Linux
kernel.

ACPICA commit 6b2701f619040e803313363f516b200e362a9100
Make these mutex objects independent of the deadlock detection mechanism.
This mechanism caused failures with the multithread debugger.
This patch doesn't affect Linux kernel as debugger is currently not fully
functioning in the Linux kernel. And the further debugger cleanups will
take care of handling debugger command signalling correctly instead of
using such kind of mutexes. So it is safe to leave this patch as it is.

of the parent of that subnode and not the scope containing the _DSD object

There is a concern that if the platform firmware was involved in
the system resume that's being completed, some devices might have
been reset by it and if those devices had the power.direct_complete
flag set during the preceding suspend transition, they may stay
in a reset-power-on state indefinitely (until they are runtime-resumed
and then suspended again). That may not be a big deal from the
individual device's perspective, but if the system is an SoC, it may
be prevented from entering deep SoC-wide low-power states on idle
because of that.
The devices that are most likely to be affected by this issue are
PCI devices and ACPI-enumerated devices using the general ACPI PM
domain, so to prevent it from happening for those devices, force a
runtime resume for them if they have their power.direct_complete
flags set and the platform firmware was involved in the resume
transition currently in progress.

There are quite a few cases in which device drivers, bus types or
even the PM core itself may benefit from knowing whether or not
the platform firmware will be involved in the upcoming system power
transition (during system suspend) or whether or not it was involved
in it (during system resume).
For this reason, introduce global system suspend flags that can be
used by the platform code to expose that information for the benefit
of the other parts of the kernel and make the ACPI core set them
as appropriate.

IRQ controllers and timers are the two types of device the kernel
requires before being able to use the device driver model.
ACPI so far lacks a proper probing infrastructure similar to the one
we have with DT, where we're able to declare IRQ chips and
clocksources inside the driver code, and let the core code pick it up
and call us back on a match. This leads to all kind of really ugly
hacks all over the arm64 code and even in the ACPI layer.
In order to allow some basic probing based on the ACPI tables,
introduce "struct acpi_probe_entry" which contains just enough
data and callbacks to match a table, an optional subtable, and
call a probe function. A driver can, at build time, register itself
and expect being called if the right entry exists in the ACPI
table.
A acpi_probe_device_table() is provided, taking an identifier for
a set of acpi_prove_entries, and iterating over the registered
entries.

Make device_get_next_child_node() work with ACPI data-only subnodes
introduced previously.
Namely, replace acpi_get_next_child() with acpi_get_next_subnode()
that can handle (and return) child device objects as well as child
data-only subnodes of the given device and modify the ACPI part
of the GPIO subsystem to handle data-only subnodes returned by it.
To that end, introduce acpi_node_get_gpiod() taking a struct
fwnode_handle pointer as the first argument. That argument may
point to an ACPI device object as well as to a data-only subnode
and the function should do the right thing (ie. look for the matching
GPIO descriptor correctly) in either case.
Next, modify fwnode_get_named_gpiod() to use acpi_node_get_gpiod()
instead of acpi_get_gpiod_by_index() which automatically causes
devm_get_gpiod_from_child() to work with ACPI data-only subnodes
that may be returned by device_get_next_child_node() which in turn
is required by the users of that function (the gpio_keys_polled
and gpio-leds drivers).

In some cases, the information expressed via device properties is
hierarchical by nature. For example, the properties of a composite
device consisting of multiple semi-dependent components may need
to be represented in the form of a tree of property data sets
corresponding to specific components of the device.
Unfortunately, using ACPI device objects for this purpose turns out
to be problematic, mostly due to the assumption made by some operating
systems (that platform firmware generally needs to work with) that
each device object in the ACPI namespace represents a device requiring
a separate driver. That assumption leads to complications which
reportedly are impractically difficult to overcome and a different
approach is needed for the sake of interoperability.
The approach implemented here is based on extending _DSD via pointers
(links) to additional ACPI objects returning data packages formatted
in accordance with the _DSD formatting rules defined by Section 6.2.5
of ACPI 6. Those additional objects are referred to as data-only
subnodes of the device object containing the _DSD pointing to them.
The links to them need to be located in a separate section of the
_DSD data package following UUID dbb8e3e6-5886-4ba6-8795-1319f52a966b
referred to as the Hierarchical Data Extension UUID as defined in [1].
Each of them is represented by a package of two strings. The first
string in that package (the key) is regarded as the name of the
data-only subnode pointed to by the link. The second string in it
(the target) is expected to hold the ACPI namespace path (possibly
utilizing the usual ACPI namespace search rules) of an ACPI object
evaluating to a data package extending the _DSD.
The device properties initialization code follows those links,
creates a struct acpi_data_node object for each of them to store
the data returned by the ACPI object pointed to by it and processes
those data recursively (which may lead to the creation of more
struct acpi_data_node objects if the returned data package contains
the Hierarchical Data Extension UUID section with more links in it).
All of the struct acpi_data_node objects are present until the the
ACPI device object containing the _DSD with links to them is deleted
and they are deleted along with that object.

If the ACPI APEI firmware handles hardware error first (called
"firmware first handling"), the firmware updates the GHES memory
region with hardware error record (called "generic hardware
error record"). Essentially the firmware writes hardware error
records in the GHES memory region, triggers an NMI/interrupt,
then the GHES driver goes off and grabs the error record from
the GHES region.
The kernel currently maps the GHES memory region as cacheable
(PAGE_KERNEL) for all architectures. However, on some arm64
platforms, there is a mismatch between how the kernel maps the
GHES region (PAGE_KERNEL) and how the firmware maps it
(EFI_MEMORY_UC, ie. uncacheable), leading to the possibility of
the kernel GHES driver reading stale data from the cache when it
receives the interrupt.
With stale data being read, the kernel is unaware there is new
hardware error to be handled when there actually is; this may
lead to further damage in various scenarios, such as error
propagation caused data corruption. If uncorrected error (such
as double bit ECC error) happened in memory operation and if the
kernel is unaware of such an event happening, errorneous data may
be propagated to the disk.
Instead GHES memory region should be mapped with page protection
type according to what is returned from arch_apei_get_mem_attribute().

The IPMI SI driver was using direct PNP, but that was not really
ideal because the IPMI device is a platform device. There was
some special handling in the acpi_pnp.c code for making this work,
but that was breaking ACPI handling for the IPMI SSIF driver.
So without this patch there were significant issues getting the
SSIF driver to work with ACPI.
So use a platform device for ACPI detection and remove the
entry from acpi_pnp.c.

Pull nvdimm fixlet from Dan Williams:
"This is a libnvdimm ABI fixup.
I pushed back on this change quite hard given the late date, that it
appears to be purely cosmetic, sysfs is not necessarily meant to be a
user friendly UI, and the kernel interprets the reversed polarity of
the ACPI_NFIT_MEM_ARMED flag correctly. When this flag is set, the
energy source of an NVDIMM is not armed and any new writes to the DIMM
may not be preserved.
However, Bob Moore warned me that it is important to get these things
named correctly wherever they appear otherwise we run the risk of a
less than cautious firmware engineer implementing the polarity the
wrong way. Once a mistake like that escapes into production platforms
the flag becomes useless and we need to move to a new bit position.
Bob has agreed to take a change through ACPICA to rename
ACPI_NFIT_MEM_ARMED to ACPI_NFIT_MEM_NOT_ARMED, and the patch below
from Toshi brings the sysfs representation of these flags in line with
their respective polarities.
Please pull for 4.2 as this is the first kernel to expose the ACPI
NFIT sysfs representation, and this is likely a kernel that firmware
developers will be using for checking out their NVDIMM enabling"

nfit: Clarify memory device state flags strings
Given that a write-back (WB) mapping plus non-temporal stores is
expected to be the most efficient way to access PMEM, update the
definition of ARCH_HAS_PMEM_API to imply arch support for
WB-mapped-PMEM. This is needed as a pre-requisite for adding PMEM to
the direct map and mapping it with struct page.
The above clarification for X86_64 means that memcpy_to_pmem() is
permitted to use the non-temporal arch_memcpy_to_pmem() rather than
needlessly fall back to default_memcpy_to_pmem() when the pcommit
instruction is not available. When arch_memcpy_to_pmem() is not
guaranteed to flush writes out of cache, i.e. on older X86_32
implementations where non-temporal stores may just dirty cache,
ARCH_HAS_PMEM_API is simply disabled.
The default fall back for persistent memory handling remains. Namely,
map it with the WT (write-through) cache-type and hope for the best.
arch_has_pmem_api() is updated to only indicate whether the arch
provides the proper helpers to meet the minimum "writes are visible
outside the cache hierarchy after memcpy_to_pmem() + wmb_pmem()". Code
that cares whether wmb_pmem() actually flushes writes to pmem must now
call arch_has_wmb_pmem() directly.

This should result in a pretty sizeable performance gain for reads. For
rough comparison I did some simple read testing using PMEM to compare
reads of write combining (WC) mappings vs write-back (WB). This was
done on a random lab machine.
PMEM reads from a write combining mapping:
# dd of=/dev/null if=/dev/pmem0 bs=4096 count=100000
100000+0 records in
100000+0 records out
409600000 bytes (410 MB) copied, 9.2855 s, 44.1 MB/s
PMEM reads from a write-back mapping:
# dd of=/dev/null if=/dev/pmem0 bs=4096 count=1000000
1000000+0 records in
1000000+0 records out
4096000000 bytes (4.1 GB) copied, 3.44034 s, 1.2 GB/s
To be able to safely support a write-back aperture I needed to add
support for the "read flush" _DSM flag, as outlined in the DSM spec:
http://pmem.io/documents/NVDIMM_DSM_Interface_Example.pdf
This flag tells the ND BLK driver that it needs to flush the cache lines
associated with the aperture after the aperture is moved but before any
new data is read. This ensures that any stale cache lines from the
previous contents of the aperture will be discarded from the processor
cache, and the new data will be read properly from the DIMM. We know
that the cache lines are clean and will be discarded without any
writeback because either a) the previous aperture operation was a read,
and we never modified the contents of the aperture, or b) the previous
aperture operation was a write and we must have written back the dirtied
contents of the aperture to the DIMM before the I/O was completed.
In order to add support for the "read flush" flag I needed to add a
generic routine to invalidate cache lines, mmio_flush_range(). This is
protected by the ARCH_HAS_MMIO_FLUSH Kconfig variable, and is currently
only supported on x86.

ACPI 6.0 NFIT Memory Device State Flags in Table 5-129 defines
NVDIMM status as follows. These bits indicate multiple info,
such as failures, pending event, and capability.
Bit [0] set to 1 to indicate that the previous SAVE to the
Memory Device failed.
Bit [1] set to 1 to indicate that the last RESTORE from the
Memory Device failed.
Bit [2] set to 1 to indicate that platform flush of data to
Memory Device failed. As a result, the restored data content
may be inconsistent even if SAVE and RESTORE do not indicate
failure.
Bit [3] set to 1 to indicate that the Memory Device is observed
to be not armed prior to OSPM hand off. A Memory Device is
considered armed if it is able to accept persistent writes.
Bit [4] set to 1 to indicate that the Memory Device observed
SMART and health events prior to OSPM handoff.
/sys/bus/nd/devices/nmemX/nfit/flags shows this flags info.
The output strings associated with the bits are "save", "restore",
"smart", etc., which can be confusing as they may be interpreted
as positive status, i.e. save succeeded.
Change also the dev_info() message in acpi_nfit_register_dimms()
to be consistent with the sysfs flags strings.

According to the ACPI dump file posted by Nick at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1440072
The ACPI MADT table includes an interrupt source overridden entry for
ACPI SCI:
[236h 0566 1] Subtable Type : 02 <Interrupt Source Override>
[237h 0567 1] Length : 0A
[238h 0568 1] Bus : 00
[239h 0569 1] Source : 09
[23Ah 0570 4] Interrupt : 00000009
[23Eh 0574 2] Flags (decoded below) : 000D
Polarity : 1
Trigger Mode : 3
And in DSDT table, we have _PRT method to define PCI interrupts, which
eventually goes to:
Name (PRSA, ResourceTemplate ()
{
IRQ (Level, ActiveLow, Shared, )
{3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,14,15}
})
Name (PRSB, ResourceTemplate ()
{
IRQ (Level, ActiveLow, Shared, )
{3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,14,15}
})
Name (PRSC, ResourceTemplate ()
{
IRQ (Level, ActiveLow, Shared, )
{3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,14,15}
})
Name (PRSD, ResourceTemplate ()
{
IRQ (Level, ActiveLow, Shared, )
{3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,14,15}
})
According to the MADT and DSDT tables, IRQ 9 may be used for:
1) ACPI SCI in level, high mode
2) PCI legacy IRQ in level, low mode
So there's a conflict in polarity setting for IRQ 9.
Prior to commit cd68f6bd53 ("x86, irq, acpi: Get rid of special
handling of GSI for ACPI SCI"), ACPI SCI is handled specially and
there's no check for conflicts between ACPI SCI and PCI legagy IRQ.
And it seems that the HyperV hypervisor doesn't make use of the
polarity configuration in IOAPIC entry, so it just works.
Commit cd68f6bd53 gets rid of the specially handling of ACPI SCI,
and then the pin attribute checking code discloses the conflicts
between ACPI SCI and PCI legacy IRQ on HyperV virtual machine,
and rejects the request to assign IRQ9 to PCI devices.
So penalize legacy IRQ used by ACPI SCI and mark it unusable if ACPI
SCI attributes conflict with PCI IRQ attributes.

ACPICA commit 42d7ad7bfb1cfb95183c1386c77509f2036f521d
When acpi_gbl_db_opt_verbose is used in acpi_dm_descending_op() (invoked by
acpi_dm_disassemble()), it is actually exported by the disassembler but used
by the debugger to distinguish the output of the disassembler for different
debugger commands. It is by default TRUE but is set to FALSE for control
method disassembly command - "disassemble". So it's initialization should
be a part of the ACPI_DISASSEMBLER conditioned code. This patch uses
ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL to achieve a clean manner so that when ACPI_DISASSEMBLER
is not defined, ACPI_DEBUGGER conditioned code needn't link to this option.
Since it is a disassembler exported variable, it is renamed to
acpi_gbl_dm_opt_Verbose in this patch.

ACPICA commit c0b38b4c3982c2336ee92a2a14716107248bd941
The fixed table indexes leave holes in the global table list:
1. One hole can be seen when there is only 1 FACS provided by the BIOS.
2. Tow holes can be seen when it is a reduced hardware platform.
The holes do not break OSPMs but have broken ACPI debugger "tables"
command.
Also the "fixed table indexes" mechanism may make the descriptors of the
standard tables installed earlier than DSDT to be overwritten by the
descriptors of the fixed tables. For example, FACP disappears from the
global table list after DSDT is installed.
This patch fixes all above issues by removing the "fixed table indexes"
mechanism which is too complicated to be maintained in a regression safe
manner. After removal, the table loader will determine the indexes of the
fixed tables. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit ed7769e832de6c7ba90615480d916c85fd100422
If a table load fails, delete all namespace objects created by the
table, otherwise these objects will be uninitialized, causing
problems later. This appears to be a very rare problem.
Also handle the unitialized node problem to prevent possible
faults. ACPICA BZ 1185.

This patch introduces a new Kconfig symbol, ACPI_PROCESSOR_IDLE,
which is auto selected by architectures which support the ACPI
based C states for CPU Idle management.
The processor_idle driver in its present form contains declarations
specific to X86 and IA64. Since there are no reasonable defaults
for other architectures e.g. ARM64, the driver is selected only for
X86 or IA64.
This helps in decoupling the ACPI processor_driver from the ACPI
processor_idle driver which is useful for the upcoming alternative
patchwork for controlling CPU Performance (CPPC) and CPU Idle (LPI).

The ACPI processor driver is currently tied too closely
to the ACPI P-states (PSS) and other related constructs
for controlling CPU performance.
The newer ACPI specification (v5.1 onwards) introduces
alternative methods to PSS. These new mechanisms are
described within each ACPI Processor object and so they
need to be scanned whenever a new Processor object is detected.
This patch introduces a new Kconfig symbol to allow for
finer configurability among the two options for controlling
performance states. There is no change in functionality and
the option is auto-selected by the architectures which support it.
A future commit will introduce support for CPPC: A newer method of
controlling CPU performance. The OS is not expected to support
CPPC and PSS at the same time, so the Kconfig option lets us make
the two mutually exclusive at compile time.

It is proven that Windows evaluates _Qxx handlers in a parallel way. This
patch follows this fact, splits _Qxx evaluations from the NOTIFY queue to
form a separate queue, so that _Qxx evaluations can be queued up on
different CPUs rather than being queued up on a CPU0 bound queue.
Event handling related callbacks are also renamed and sorted in this patch.

Before this commit, the following would happen:
a) acpi_video_get_backlight_type() gets called
b) acpi_video_get_backlight_type() calls acpi_video_init_backlight_type()
c) acpi_video_init_backlight_type() locks its function static init_mutex
d) acpi_video_init_backlight_type() calls backlight_register_notifier()
e) backlight_register_notifier() takes its notifier-chain lock
And when the backlight notifier chain gets called we've:
1) blocking_notifier_call_chain() gets called
2) blocking_notifier_call_chain() takes the notifier-chain lock
3) blocking_notifier_call_chain() calls acpi_video_backlight_notify()
4) acpi_video_backlight_notify() calls acpi_video_get_backlight_type()
5) acpi_video_get_backlight_type() calls acpi_video_init_backlight_type()
6) acpi_video_init_backlight_type() locks its function static init_mutex
So in the first call sequence we have:
a) init_mutex gets locked
b) notifier-chain gets locked
and in the second call sequence we have:
1) notifier-chain gets locked
2) init_mutex gets locked
And we've a circular locking dependency. This specific locking dependency
is fixable without using the big hammer otherwise known as a workqueue,
but further analysis shows a similar problem with the backlight notifier
chain lock vs register_count_mutex from drivers/acpi/acpi_video.c,
and fixing that becomes problematic.
So this commit simply fixes this with the big hammer, performance
wise this is a non issue as we expect the work to get scheduled
exactly zero or one times during normal system use.

acpi_debugfs_init function is declared with return type int in
drivers/acpi/internal.h when CONFIG_DEBUG_FS is enabled, but its
definition in drivers/acpi/debugfs.c has return type void. This is due
to commit aecad432fd ("ACPI: Cleanup custom_method debug stuff"),
which changed the return type from int to void without updating the
declaration.
Fix this inconsistency by updating acpi_debugfs_init prototype. While
at it, include internal.h in debugfs.c so that the compiler can check
that the declaration and definition remain compatible.

This patch updates the method tracing facility as the acpi_debug_trace()
API has been updated to allow it to trace AML interpreter execution, the
meanings and the usages of the API parameters are changed due to the
updates.
The new API:
1. Uses ACPI_TRACE_ENABLED flag to indicate the enabling of the tracer;
2. Allows tracer still can be enabled when method name is not specified so
that the AML interpreter execution can be traced without knowing the
method name, which is useful for kernel boot tracing;
3. Supports arbitrary full path name, it doesn't need to be a name related
to an entrance of acpi_evaluate_object().
Note that the sysfs parameters are also updated so that when reading the
attribute files, ACPICA internal settings are returned.
In order to make the sysfs parameters (acpi.trace_state) available during
boot, this patch adds code to bypass ACPICA semaphore/mutex invocations
when acpi mutex utilities haven't been initialized.
This patch doesn't update documentation of method tracing facility, it will
be updated by further patches.

The thermal code uses int, long and unsigned long for temperatures
in different places.
Using an unsigned type limits the thermal framework to positive
temperatures without need. Also several drivers currently will report
temperatures near UINT_MAX for temperatures below 0°C. This will probably
immediately shut the machine down due to overtemperature if started below
0°C.
'long' is 64bit on several architectures. This is not needed since INT_MAX °mC
is above the melting point of all known materials.
Consistently use a plain 'int' for temperatures throughout the thermal code and
the drivers. This only changes the places in the drivers where the temperature
is passed around as pointer, when drivers internally use another type this is
not changed.

PM / QoS: Make it possible to expose device latency tolerance to userspace
Commit 20dacb71ad ("ACPI / PM: Rework device power management to follow
ACPI 6") changed the device power management to use D3hot if the device
in question does not have _PR3 method even if D3cold was requested by the
caller.
However, if the device has _PR3 device->power.state is also set to D3hot
instead of D3Cold after power resources have been turned off because
device->power.state will be assigned from "state" instead of
"target_state".
Next time the device is transitioned to D0, acpi_power_transition() will
find that the current power state of the device is D3hot instead of D3cold
which causes it to power down all resources required for the current
(wrong) state D3hot.
Below is a simplified ASL example of a real touch panel device which
triggers the problem:
Scope (TPL1)
{
Name (_PR0, Package (1) { \_SB.PCI0.I2C1.PXTC })
Name (_PR3, Package (1) { \_SB.PCI0.I2C1.PXTC })
...
}
In both D0 and D3hot the same power resource is required. However, when
acpi_power_transition() turns off power resources required for D3hot (as
the device is transitioned to D0) it powers down PXTC which then makes the
device to lose its power.
Fix this by assigning "target_state" to the device power state instead of
"state" that is always D3hot even for devices with valid _PR3.

Some devices, like MFD subdevices, share a single ACPI companion device so
that they are able to access their resources and children. However,
currently all these subdevices are attached to the ACPI power domain and
this might cause that the power methods for the companion device get called
more than once.
In order to solve this we attach the ACPI power domain only to the first
physical device that is bound to the ACPI companion device. In case of MFD
devices, this is the parent MFD device itself.
