Some preliminary work at making use of this driver led me to implement
CRC-16 checks on read and write to deal with the occasional glitchiness of
the 1-Wire bus. The revised driver (attached) returns an I/O error if the
CRC check fails. When reading the chip's state, either you get a valid
indication or you get an I/O error. When changing its state, either the
change is successful or an I/O error is returned.

Applications can submit a set of commands in one packet to the kernel,
and in some cases it is required such as reading the temperature
sensor results. This adds an option W1_CN_BUNDLE to the flags of
cn_msg to request the kernel to reply in one packet for efficiency.
The cn_msg flags now check for unknown flag values and return an error
if one is seen. See "Proper handling of unknown flags in system
calls" http://lwn.net/Articles/588444/
This corrects the ack values returned as per the protocol standard,
namely the original ack for status messages and seq + 1 for all others
such as the data returned from a read.
Some of the common variable names have been standardized as follows.
struct cn_msg *cn
struct w1_netlink_msg *msg
struct w1_netlink_cmd *cmd
struct w1_master *dev

__w1_attach_slave_device calls device_add which calls w1_bus_notify
which calls the w1_bq27000 slave driver, which calls
platform_device_add and device_add and deadlocks on getting
&(&priv->bus_notifier)->rwsem as it is still held in the previous
device_add. This avoids the problem by processing the family
add/remove outside of the slave device_add call.
Commit 47eba33a09 introduced this deadlock and added
a KOBJ_ADD, as the add was already reported in device_register two add
events were being sent. This change suppresses the device_register
add so that any slave device sysfs entries are setup before the add
goes out.
Belisko Marek reported this change fixed the deadlock he was seeing on
ARM device tree, while testing on my x86-64 system never saw the
deadlock.

If the message type is W1_MASTER_CMD or W1_SLAVE_CMD, then a reference
is taken when searching for the slave or master device. If there
isn't any following data m->len (mlen is a copy) is 0 and packing up
the message for later execution is skipped leaving nothing to
decrement the reference counts.
Way back when, m->len was checked before the search that increments the
reference count, but W1_LIST_MASTERS has no additional data, the check
was moved in 9be62e0b2f causing this bug.

calling search from a thread which wasn't a kthread. 9d1817cab2

On architectures where long is more then 32 bits, modifying a 32-bit field
with set_bit (and other atomic bit operations) may cause bytes following
the field to by modified.
Because the endianness of the bits within a field is the native endianness
of the CPU[1], on big-endian machines, bit number zero is in the last byte
of the field.
Therefore, `set_bit(0, ptr)' on a 64-bit big-endian machine is roughly
equivalent to `((char *)ptr)[7] |= 1', and since w1 driver uses a 32-bit
field for holding the flags, this causes bytes beyond the field to be
modified.
[1] From Documentation/atomic_ops.txt:
Native atomic bit operations are defined to operate on objects
aligned to the size of an "unsigned long" C data type, and are
least of that size. The endianness of the bits within each
"unsigned long" are the native endianness of the cpu.

Power-up timing
The DS2408 is sensitive to the power-on slew rate and can inadvertently
power up with a test mode feature enabled. When this occurs, the P0 port
does not respond to the Channel Access Write command. For most reliable
operation, it is recommended to disable the test mode after every power-on
reset using the Disable Test Mode sequence shown below. The 64-bit ROM
code must be transmitted in the same bit sequence as with the Match ROM
command, i.e., least significant bit first. This precaution is
recommended in parasite power mode (VCC pin connected to GND) as well as
with VCC power.

GENERIC_GPIO now synonymous with GPIOLIB. There are no longer any valid
cases for enableing GENERIC_GPIO without GPIOLIB, even though it is
possible to do so which has been causing confusion and breakage. This
branch does the work to completely eliminate GENERIC_GPIO.
However, it is not trivial to just create a branch to remove it. Over
the course of the v3.9 cycle more code referencing GENERIC_GPIO has been
added to linux-next that conflicts with this branch. The following must
be done to resolve the conflicts when merging this branch into mainline:
* "git grep CONFIG_GENERIC_GPIO" should return 0 hits. Matches should be
replaced with CONFIG_GPIOLIB
* "git grep '\bGENERIC_GPIO\b'" should return 1 hit in the Chinese
documentation.
* Selectors of GENERIC_GPIO should be turned into selectors of GPIOLIB
* definitions of the option in architecture Kconfig code should be deleted.
Stephen has 3 merge fixup patches[1] that do the above. They are currently
applicable on mainline as of May 2nd.

Good job. I was too lazy to bisect for bad commit;)
Reading the code I found problematic kthread_should_stop call from netlink
connector which causes the oops. After applying a patch, I've been testing
owfs+w1 setup for nearly two days and it seems to work very reliable (no
hangs, no memleaks etc).
More detailed description and possible fix is given below:
Function w1_search can be called from either kthread or netlink callback.
While the former works fine, the latter causes oops due to kthread_should_stop
invocation.
This patch adds a check if w1_search is serving netlink command, skipping
kthread_should_stop invocation if so.

This branch contains of devicetree changes for the Freescale i.MX platform.
The base patch of the branch changes the format of the dts files to a
slightly different format that makes it easier to do derivative board
definitions, but it also introduces a lot of churn in the process since
every line of the file is touched.
On top of that are a handful of the regular changes; enabling more boards
as DT-based instead of legacy board files (mx25pdk), enabling another
driver for devicetree and thus adding bindings (onewire), etc.
I'm not happy about the churn, and will likely not take it for other platforms
in the future.

The various devm_ functions allocate memory that is released when a driver
detaches. This patch uses these functions for data that is allocated in
the probe function of a platform device and is only freed in the remove
function.
At the same time, this fixes two faults. First, mdev, the result of
kzalloc, was never freed. Second, on failure of ioremap, 0 was returned.
This has been replaced by -EBUSY, which was the failure value for the call
to request_mem_region, with which the call to ioremap has been combined.
The warning message on failure of ioremap is dropped, because
devm_request_and_ioremap already gives such messages on failure.
Finally, the initial call to platform_get_resource is moved closer to the
call to devm_request_and_ioremap, which takes care of checking whether its
result is NULL, implying that a test on the result of this call to
platform_get_resource is not needed.

With the new i.mx clock framework the mxc_w1 clock is registered as:
clk_register_clkdev(clk[owire_gate], NULL, "mxc_w1.0");
So we do not need to pass "owire" string and can use NULL instead.

HDQ/1-wire registers are 32 bits long, even if the register contents
fit into 8 bits, so accesses must be 32-bit aligned. Evidently the
OMAP2/3 interconnects allowed the driver to get away with 8 bit accesses,
but the OMAP4 puts a stop to that:

Allow the OMAP HDQ1W driver to be built for all OMAP2+ SoCs by
adjusting KConfig dependencies. The previous dependency required
either SOC_OMAP2430 or ARCH_OMAP3 to be set, but the HDQ IP block is
present on OMAP2420 and OMAP44xx SoCs. The driver was still
selectable on multi-OMAP kernel configurations, however; so the
previous prohibition was rather pointless.

The 'mutex' in struct w1_master is use for two very different
purposes.
Firstly it protects various data structures such as the list of all
slaves.
Secondly it protects the w1 buss against concurrent accesses.
This can lead to deadlocks when the ->probe code called while adding a
slave needs to talk on the bus, as is the case for power_supply
devices.
ds2780 and ds2781 drivers contain a work around to track which
process hold the lock simply to avoid this deadlock. bq27000 doesn't
have that work around and so deadlocks.
There are other possible deadlocks involving sysfs.
When removing a device the sysfs s_active lock is held, so the lock
that protects the slave list must take precedence over s_active.
However when access power_supply attributes via sysfs, the s_active
lock must take precedence over the lock that protects accesses to
the bus.
So to avoid deadlocks between w1 slaves and sysfs, these must be
two separate locks. Making them separate means that the work around
in ds2780 and ds2781 can be removed.
So this patch:
- adds a new mutex: "bus_mutex" which serialises access to the bus.
- takes in mutex in w1_search and ds1wm_search while they access
the bus for searching. The mutex is dropped before calling the
callback which adds the slave.
- changes all slaves to use bus_mutex instead of mutex to
protect access to the bus
- removes w1_ds2790_io_nolock and w1_ds2781_io_nolock, and the
related code from drivers/power/ds278[01]_battery.c which
calls them.

w1 devices need a mutex to serial IO. Most use master->mutex.
However that is used for other purposes and they can conflict.
In particular master->mutex is held while w1_attach_slave_device is
called.
For bq27000, this registers a 'powersupply' device which tries to read the
current status. The attempt to read will cause a deadlock on
master->mutex.
So create a new per-slave mutex and use that for serializing IO for
bq27000.

That means either the change was wrong, or the test isn't needed.
As this function is only called from one driver (bq27x000_battery) and
it always passed a non-NULL dev, it seems good to assume that the
test isn't needed.

w1_bq27000 adds a bq27000-battery platform device but does not provide
platform data for it. This causes the bq27x00 driver to dereference a NULL
pointer.
So provide the appropriate platform data. This requires modifying
w1_bq27000_read so that it find the w1 device as the parent of the bq device.
Also there is no point exporting w1_bq27000_read as nothing else uses it
or could use it. So make it static.
Finally, as there is no way to track how many batteries have been found, and
we will probably only find one, use an id number of '-1' to assert that this

This converts the remaining USB drivers in the kernel to use the
module_usb_driver() macro which makes the code smaller and a bit
simpler.
Added bonus is that it removes some unneeded kernel log messages about
drivers loading and/or unloading.

w1_therm devices can either be bus powered or externally powered.
When device is bus powered during temperature conversion the bus
have to be left high to provide necessary power. Some masters also allow
strong power-up to be enabled in this case.
Naturally, no communication over bus can occur during that time.
However, if device has external power then there is no such restriction,
and host can talk to other devices during temperature conversion.
There is command which allows us to check how device is powered,
this patch uses it to release the bus on externally w1_therm powered devices
during temperature conversion.
Also, this changes uninterruptible sleeps there into interruptible ones to
avoid long uninterruptible sleep if w1 subsystem happens to grab bus for
scan during w1_therm_read().

The first patch adds generic functionnality to w1_io for Resume Command
[A5h] lots of slaves support. I found it useful for multi-commands/reset
workflows with the same slave on a multi-slave bus.
This DS2408 w1 slave driver is not complete for all the features of the
chip, but its sufficient if you use it as a simple IO expander. Enjoy!
The ds1wm had Kconfig dependencies towards ARM && HAVE_CLK. I took them
out since I was using the ds1wm on an x86_64 platform (ds1wm in a FPGA
through pcie) and found them irrelevant.
The clock freq/divisors at the top of ds1wm.c did not have the MSB set to
1. This bit is CLK_EN which turns the whole prescaler and dividers on.
The driver never mentionned this bit either, so I just included this bit
right in the table entries. I also took the liberty to add a couple of
entries to the table. The spec doesn't explicitely mentions these
possibilities but the description and examination of the core shows the
prescalers & dividers can be used for more than the table explicitely
shows. The table I enlarged still doesn't cover all possibilities, but
it's a good start.
I also made a few tweaks to a couple of the read and write algorithms
which made sense while I had my head very deep in the ds1wm documentation.
We stressed it a lot with 10+ slaves on the bus, many ds2408, ds2431 and
ds2433 at the same time doing extensive interaction. It proved quite
stable in our production environment.

Use mfd_data for passing information from mfd drivers to mfd
clients. The mfd_cell's driver_data field is being phased out.
Clients that were using driver_data now access .mfd_data
via mfd_get_data(). This changes ds1wm only; mfd drivers with
other cells are not modified, with the exception of led_cell.
The led_cell.driver_data line is dropped from htc-pasic3.c in this
patch as well. It's not used in mainline (there's no leds-pasic3
platform driver), so it should be safe to take care of that here.

This code makes two calls to clk_get, then test both return values and
fails if either failed.
The problem is that in the first inner if, where the first call to
clk_get has failed, it don't know if the second call has failed as well.
So it don't know whether clk_get should be called on the result of the
second call. Of course, it would be possible to test that value again.
A simpler solution is just to test the result of calling clk_get
directly after each call.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.
http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

A pointer to omap_hdq_probe is passed to the core via
platform_driver_register and so the function must not disappear when the
.init sections are discarded. Otherwise (if also having HOTPLUG=y)
unbinding and binding a device to the driver via sysfs will result in an
oops as does a device being registered late.
An alternative to this patch is using platform_driver_probe instead of
platform_driver_register plus removing the pointer to the probe function
from the struct platform_driver.

There is no point in implementing a detect callback for the DS2482, as
this device can't be detected. It was there solely to handle "force"
module parameters to instantiate devices, but now we have a better sysfs
interface that can do the same.
So we can get rid of the ugly module parameters and the detect callback.

The connector documentation states that the argument to the callback
function is always a pointer to a struct cn_msg, but rather than encode it
in the API itself, it uses a void pointer everywhere. This doesn't make
much sense to encode the pointer in documentation as it prevents proper C
type checking from occurring and can easily allow people to use the wrong
pointer type. So convert the argument type to an explicit struct cn_msg
pointer.
