Darrick J. Wong 5aca284210 vfs: create a generic checking and prep function for FS_IOC_SETFLAGS
Create a generic function to check incoming FS_IOC_SETFLAGS flag values
and later prepare the inode for updates so that we can standardize the
implementations that follow ext4's flag values.

Note that the efivarfs implementation no longer fails a no-op SETFLAGS
without CAP_LINUX_IMMUTABLE since that's the behavior in ext*.

Amir Goldstein e38f7f53c3 vfs: introduce file_modified() helper
The combination of file_remove_privs() and file_update_mtime() is
quite common in filesystem ->write_iter() methods.

Modelled after the helper file_accessed(), introduce file_modified()
and use it from generic_remap_file_range_prep().

Note that the order of calling file_remove_privs() before
file_update_mtime() in the helper was matched to the more common order by
filesystems and not the current order in generic_remap_file_range_prep().

Johannes Weiner 7b785645e8 mm: fix page cache convergence regression
Since a283348629 ("page cache: Finish XArray conversion"), on most
major Linux distributions, the page cache doesn't correctly transition
when the hot data set is changing, and leaves the new pages thrashing
indefinitely instead of kicking out the cold ones.

On a freshly booted, freshly ssh'd into virtual machine with 1G RAM
running stock Arch Linux:

workingset-b is a 600M file on a 1G host that is otherwise entirely
idle. No matter how often it's being accessed, it won't get cached.

While investigating, I noticed that the non-resident information gets
aggressively reclaimed - /proc/vmstat::workingset_nodereclaim. This is
a problem because a workingset transition like this relies on the
non-resident information tracked in the page cache tree of evicted
file ranges: when the cache faults are refaults of recently evicted
cache, we challenge the existing active set, and that allows a new
workingset to establish itself.

Tracing the shrinker that maintains this memory revealed that all page
cache tree nodes were allocated to the root cgroup. This is a problem,
because 1) the shrinker sizes the amount of non-resident information
it keeps to the size of the cgroup's other memory and 2) on most major
Linux distributions, only kernel threads live in the root cgroup and
everything else gets put into services or session groups:

As a result, we basically maintain no non-resident information for the
workloads running on the system, thus breaking the caching algorithm.

Looking through the code, I found the culprit in the above-mentioned
patch: when switching from the radix tree to xarray, it dropped the
__GFP_ACCOUNT flag from the tree node allocations - the flag that
makes sure the allocated memory gets charged to and tracked by the
cgroup of the calling process - in this case, the one doing the fault.

To fix this, allow xarray users to specify per-tree flag that makes
xarray allocate nodes using __GFP_ACCOUNT. Then restore the page cache
tree annotation to request such cgroup tracking for the cache nodes.

With this patch applied, the page cache correctly converges on new
workingsets again after just a few iterations:

Al Viro fdb0da89f4 new inode method: ->free_inode()
A lot of ->destroy_inode() instances end with call_rcu() of a callback
that does RCU-delayed part of freeing.  Introduce a new method for
doing just that, with saner signature.

Rules:

Note that NULL, NULL is equivalent to NULL, free_inode_nonrcu; we could
mandate the latter form, but that would have very little benefit beyond
making rules a bit more symmetric.  It would break backwards compatibility,
require extra boilerplate and expected semantics for (NULL, NULL) pair
would have no use whatsoever...

Alexander Lochmann f69e749a49 Abort file_remove_privs() for non-reg. files
file_remove_privs() might be called for non-regular files, e.g.
blkdev inode. There is no reason to do its job on things
like blkdev inodes, pipes, or cdevs. Hence, abort if
file does not refer to a regular inode.

AV: more to the point, for devices there might be any number of
inodes refering to given device.  Which one to strip the permissions
from, even if that made any sense in the first place?  All of them
will be observed with contents modified, after all.

Vineet Gupta a905737fdd fs/inode.c: inode_set_flags(): replace opencoded set_mask_bits()
It seems that commits 5f16f3225b and 00a1a053eb, both with same
commitlog ("ext4: atomically set inode->i_flags in ext4_set_inode_flags()")
introduced the set_mask_bits API, but somehow missed not using it in ext4
in the end.

Also, set_mask_bits() is used in fs quite a bit and we can possibly come
up with a generic llsc based implementation (w/o the cmpxchg loop)

This change causes serious changes to page cache and inode cache
behaviour and balance, resulting in major performance regressions when
combining worklaods such as large file copies and kernel compiles.

This change is a hack to work around the problems introduced by changing
how agressive shrinkers are on small caches in commit 172b06c32b ("mm:
slowly shrink slabs with a relatively small number of objects").  It

Arnd Bergmann d651d1607f vfs: replace current_kernel_time64 with ktime equivalent
current_time is the last remaining caller of current_kernel_time64(),
which is a wrapper around ktime_get_coarse_real_ts64().  This calls the
latter directly for consistency with the rest of the kernel that is moving
to the ktime_get_ family of time accessors, as now documented in
Documentation/core-api/timekeeping.rst.

An open questions is whether we may want to actually call the more
accurate ktime_get_real_ts64() for file systems that save high-resolution
timestamps in their on-disk format.  This would add a small overhead to
each update of the inode stamps but lead to inode timestamps to actually
have a usable resolution better than one jiffy (1 to 10 milliseconds
normally).  Experiments on a variety of hardware platforms show a typical
time of around 100 CPU cycles to read the cycle counter and calculate the
accurate time from that.  On old platforms without a cycle counter, this
can be signiciantly higher, up to several microseconds to access a
hardware clock, but those have become very rare by now.

I traced the original addition of the current_kernel_time() call to set
the nanosecond fields back to linux-2.5.48, where Andi Kleen added a patch
with subject "nanosecond stat timefields".  Andi explains that the
motivation was to introduce as little overhead as possible back then.  At
this time, reading the clock hardware was also more expensive when most
architectures did not have a cycle counter.

One side effect of having more accurate inode timestamp would be having to
write out the inode every time that mtime/ctime/atime get touched on most
systems, whereas many file systems today only write it when the timestamps
have changed, i.e.  at most once per jiffy unless something else changes
as well.  That change would certainly be noticed in some workloads, which
is enough reason to not do it without a good reason, regardless of the
cost of reading the time.

One thing we could still consider however would be to round the timestamps
from current_time() to multiples of NSEC_PER_JIFFY, e.g.  full
milliseconds rather than having six or seven meaningless but confusing
digits at the end of the timestamp.

Roman Gushchin a76cf1a474 mm: don't reclaim inodes with many attached pages
Spock reported that commit 172b06c32b ("mm: slowly shrink slabs with a
relatively small number of objects") leads to a regression on his setup:
periodically the majority of the pagecache is evicted without an obvious
reason, while before the change the amount of free memory was balancing
around the watermark.

The reason behind is that the mentioned above change created some
minimal background pressure on the inode cache.  The problem is that if
an inode is considered to be reclaimed, all belonging pagecache page are
stripped, no matter how many of them are there.  So, if a huge
multi-gigabyte file is cached in the memory, and the goal is to reclaim
only few slab objects (unused inodes), we still can eventually evict all
gigabytes of the pagecache at once.

The workload described by Spock has few large non-mapped files in the
pagecache, so it's especially noticeable.

To solve the problem let's postpone the reclaim of inodes, which have
more than 1 attached page.  Let's wait until the pagecache pages will be
evicted naturally by scanning the corresponding LRU lists, and only then
reclaim the inode structure.

Miklos Szeredi e950564b97 vfs: don't evict uninitialized inode
iput() ends up calling ->evict() on new inode, which is not yet initialized
by owning fs.  So use destroy_inode() instead.

Add to sb->s_inodes list only if inode is not in I_CREATING state (meaning
that it wasn't allocated with new_inode(), which already does the
insertion).

Al Viro c2b6d621c4 new primitive: discard_new_inode()
We don't want open-by-handle picking half-set-up in-core
struct inode from e.g. mkdir() having failed halfway through.
In other words, we don't want such inodes returned by iget_locked()
on their way to extinction.  However, we can't just have them
unhashed - otherwise open-by-handle immediately *after* that would've
ended up creating a new in-core inode over the on-disk one that
is in process of being freed right under us.

	Solution: new flag (I_CREATING) set by insert_inode_locked() and
removed by unlock_new_inode() and a new primitive (discard_new_inode())
to be used by such halfway-through-setup failure exits instead of
unlock_new_inode() / iput() combinations.  That primitive unlocks new
inode, but leaves I_CREATING in place.

	iget_locked() treats finding an I_CREATING inode as failure
(-ESTALE, once we sort out the error propagation).
	insert_inode_locked() treats the same as instant -EBUSY.
	ilookup() treats those as icache miss.

Linus Torvalds 0fa3ecd878 Fix up non-directory creation in SGID directories
sgid directories have special semantics, making newly created files in
the directory belong to the group of the directory, and newly created
subdirectories will also become sgid.  This is historically used for
group-shared directories.

But group directories writable by non-group members should not imply
that such non-group members can magically join the group, so make sure
to clear the sgid bit on non-directories for non-members (but remember
that sgid without group execute means "mandatory locking", just to
confuse things even more).

This is a late set of changes from Deepa Dinamani doing an automated
 treewide conversion of the inode and iattr structures from 'timespec'
 to 'timespec64', to push the conversion from the VFS layer into the
 individual file systems.
 
 There were no conflicts between this and the contents of linux-next
 until just before the merge window, when we saw multiple problems:
 
 - A minor conflict with my own y2038 fixes, which I could address
   by adding another patch on top here.
 - One semantic conflict with late changes to the NFS tree. I addressed
   this by merging Deepa's original branch on top of the changes that
   now got merged into mainline and making sure the merge commit includes
   the necessary changes as produced by coccinelle.
 - A trivial conflict against the removal of staging/lustre.
 - Multiple conflicts against the VFS changes in the overlayfs tree.
   These are still part of linux-next, but apparently this is no longer
   intended for 4.18 [1], so I am ignoring that part.
 
 As Deepa writes:
 
   The series aims to switch vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64.
   Currently vfs uses struct timespec, which is not y2038 safe.
 
   The series involves the following:
   1. Add vfs helper functions for supporting struct timepec64 timestamps.
   2. Cast prints of vfs timestamps to avoid warnings after the switch.
   3. Simplify code using vfs timestamps so that the actual

Deepa Dinamani 95582b0083 vfs: change inode times to use struct timespec64
struct timespec is not y2038 safe. Transition vfs to use
y2038 safe struct timespec64 instead.

The change was made with the help of the following cocinelle
script. This catches about 80% of the changes.
All the header file and logic changes are included in the
first 5 rules. The rest are trivial substitutions.
I avoid changing any of the function signatures or any other
filesystem specific data structures to keep the patch simple
for review.

The script can be a little shorter by combining different cases.
But, this version was sufficient for my usecase.

Miklos Szeredi 80ea09a002 vfs: factor out inode_insert5()
Split out common helper for race free insertion of an already allocated
inode into the cache.  Use this from iget5_locked() and
insert_inode_locked4().  Make iget5_locked() use new_inode()/iput() instead
of alloc_inode()/destroy_inode() directly.

Also export to modules for use by filesystems which want to preallocate an
inode before file/directory creation.

Darrick J. Wong 829bc787c1 fs: clear writeback errors in inode_init_always
In inode_init_always(), we clear the inode mapping flags, which clears
any retained error (AS_EIO, AS_ENOSPC) bits.  Unfortunately, we do not
also clear wb_err, which means that old mapping errors can leak through
to new inodes.

This is crucial for the XFS inode allocation path because we recycle old
in-core inodes and we do not want error state from an old file to leak
into the new file.  This bug was discovered by running generic/036 and
generic/047 in a loop and noticing that the EIOs generated by the
collision of direct and buffered writes in generic/036 would survive the
remount between 036 and 047, and get reported to the fsyncs (on
different files!) in generic/047.

Deepa Dinamani 8efd6894ff fs: add timespec64_truncate()
As vfs moves to using struct timespec64 to represent times,
update the argument to timespec_truncate() to use
struct timespec64. Also change the name of the function.
The rest of the implementation logic is the same.

Move this to fs/inode.c instead of kernel/time/time.c as all the
users of this api are filesystems.

Dave Chinner ae23395d88 inode: don't memset the inode address space twice
Noticed when looking at why cycling 600k inodes/s through the inode
cache was taking a total of 8% cpu in memset() during inode
initialisation.  There is no need to zero the inode.i_data structure
twice.

This increases single threaded bulkstat throughput from ~200,000
inodes/s to ~220,000 inodes/s, so we save a substantial amount of
CPU time per inode init by doing this.

Shakeel Butt 1a60e4d516 vfs: remove might_sleep() from clear_inode()
Commit 7994e6f725 ("vfs: Move waiting for inode writeback from
end_writeback() to evict_inode()") removed inode_sync_wait() from
end_writeback() and commit dbd5768f87 ("vfs: Rename end_writeback() to
clear_inode()") renamed end_writeback() to clear_inode().

After these patches there is no sleeping operation in clear_inode().
So, remove might_sleep() from it.

Jeff Layton e38cf302b2 fs: only set S_VERSION when updating times if necessary
We only really need to update i_version if someone has queried for it
since we last incremented it. By doing that, we can avoid having to
update the inode if the times haven't changed.

If the times have changed, then we go ahead and forcibly increment the
counter, under the assumption that we'll be going to the storage
anyway, and the increment itself is relatively cheap.

Jeff Layton ae5e165d85 fs: new API for handling inode->i_version
Add a documentation blob that explains what the i_version field is, how
it is expected to work, and how it is currently implemented by various
filesystems.

We already have inode_inc_iversion. Add several other functions for
manipulating and accessing the i_version counter. For now, the
implementation is trivial and basically works the way that all of the
open-coded i_version accesses work today.

Future patches will convert existing users of i_version to use the new
API, and then convert the backend implementation to do things more
efficiently.

Linus Torvalds 1751e8a6cb Rename superblock flags (MS_xyz -> SB_xyz)
This is a pure automated search-and-replace of the internal kernel
superblock flags.

The s_flags are now called SB_*, with the names and the values for the
moment mirroring the MS_* flags that they're equivalent to.

Note how the MS_xyz flags are the ones passed to the mount system call,
while the SB_xyz flags are what we then use in sb->s_flags.

Please do not apply this to mainline directly, instead please re-run the
coccinelle script shown below and apply its output.

For several reasons, it is desirable to use {READ,WRITE}_ONCE() in
preference to ACCESS_ONCE(), and new code is expected to use one of the
former. So far, there's been no reason to change most existing uses of
ACCESS_ONCE(), as these aren't harmful, and changing them results in
churn.

However, for some features, the read/write distinction is critical to
correct operation. To distinguish these cases, separate read/write
accessors must be used. This patch migrates (most) remaining
ACCESS_ONCE() instances to {READ,WRITE}_ONCE(), using the following

Davidlohr Bueso f808c13fd3 lib/interval_tree: fast overlap detection
Allow interval trees to quickly check for overlaps to avoid unnecesary
tree lookups in interval_tree_iter_first().

As of this patch, all interval tree flavors will require using a
'rb_root_cached' such that we can have the leftmost node easily
available.  While most users will make use of this feature, those with
special functions (in addition to the generic insert, delete, search
calls) will avoid using the cached option as they can do funky things
with insertions -- for example, vma_interval_tree_insert_after().

Darrick J. Wong 799ea9e9c5 xfs: evict all inodes involved with log redo item
When we introduced the bmap redo log items, we set MS_ACTIVE on the
mountpoint and XFS_IRECOVERY on the inode to prevent unlinked inodes
from being truncated prematurely during log recovery.  This also had the
effect of putting linked inodes on the lru instead of evicting them.

Unfortunately, we neglected to find all those unreferenced lru inodes
and evict them after finishing log recovery, which means that we leak
them if anything goes wrong in the rest of xfs_mountfs, because the lru
is only cleaned out on unmount.

Therefore, evict unreferenced inodes in the lru list immediately
after clearing MS_ACTIVE.

RWH_WRITE_LIFE_MEDIUM	Data written has a medium life time
RWH_WRITE_LIFE_LONG	Data written has a long life time
RWH_WRITE_LIFE_EXTREME	Data written has an extremely long life time

The intent is for these values to be relative to each other, no
absolute meaning should be attached to these flag names.

Add an fcntl interface for querying these flags, and also for
setting them as well:

F_GET_RW_HINT		Returns the read/write hint set on the
			underlying inode.

F_SET_RW_HINT		Set one of the above write hints on the
			underlying inode.

F_GET_FILE_RW_HINT	Returns the read/write hint set on the
			file descriptor.

F_SET_FILE_RW_HINT	Set one of the above write hints on the
			file descriptor.

The user passes in a 64-bit pointer to get/set these values, and
the interface returns 0/-1 on success/error.

Sample program testing/implementing basic setting/getting of write
hints is below.

Add support for storing the write life time hint in the inode flags
and in struct file as well, and pass them to the kiocb flags. If
both a file and its corresponding inode has a write hint, then we
use the one in the file, if available. The file hint can be used
for sync/direct IO, for buffered writeback only the inode hint
is available.

This is in preparation for utilizing these hints in the block layer,
to guide on-media data placement.

Josef Bacik 563f40019d fs: don't set *REFERENCED on single use objects
By default we set DCACHE_REFERENCED and I_REFERENCED on any dentry or
inode we create.  This is problematic as this means that it takes two
trips through the LRU for any of these objects to be reclaimed,
regardless of their actual lifetime.  With enough pressure from these
caches we can easily evict our working set from page cache with single
use objects.  So instead only set *REFERENCED if we've already been
added to the LRU list.  This means that we've been touched since the
first time we were accessed, and so more likely to need to hang out in
cache.

To illustrate this issue I wrote the following scripts

on my test box.  It is a single socket 4 core CPU with 16gib of RAM and
I tested on an Intel 2tib NVME drive.  The cache-pressure.sh script
creates a new file system and creates 2 6.5gib files in order to take up
13gib of the 16gib of ram with pagecache.  Then it runs a test program
that reads these 2 files in a loop, and keeps track of how often it has
to read bytes for each loop.  On an ideal system with no pressure we
should have to read 0 bytes indefinitely.  The second thing this script
does is start a fs_mark job that creates a ton of 0 length files,
putting pressure on the system with slab only allocations.  On exit the
script prints out how many bytes were read by the read-file program.
The results are as follows

Without patch:
/mnt/btrfs-test/reads/file1: total read during loops 27262988288
/mnt/btrfs-test/reads/file2: total read during loops 27262976000

With patch:

This patch results in a 50% reduction of the amount of pages evicted
from our working set.

Jan Kara 08991e83b7 fsnotify: Free fsnotify_mark_connector when there is no mark attached
Currently we free fsnotify_mark_connector structure only when inode /
vfsmount is getting freed. This can however impose noticeable memory
overhead when marks get attached to inodes only temporarily. So free the
connector structure once the last mark is detached from the object.
Since notification infrastructure can be working with the connector
under the protection of fsnotify_mark_srcu, we have to be careful and
free the fsnotify_mark_connector only after SRCU period passes.

Jan Kara 9dd813c15b fsnotify: Move mark list head from object into dedicated structure
Currently notification marks are attached to object (inode or vfsmnt) by
a hlist_head in the object. The list is also protected by a spinlock in
the object. So while there is any mark attached to the list of marks,
the object must be pinned in memory (and thus e.g. last iput() deleting
inode cannot happen). Also for list iteration in fsnotify() to work, we
must hold fsnotify_mark_srcu lock so that mark itself and
mark->obj_list.next cannot get freed. Thus we are required to wait for
response to fanotify events from userspace process with
fsnotify_mark_srcu lock held. That causes issues when userspace process
is buggy and does not reply to some event - basically the whole
notification subsystem gets eventually stuck.

So to be able to drop fsnotify_mark_srcu lock while waiting for
response, we have to pin the mark in memory and make sure it stays in
the object list (as removing the mark waiting for response could lead to
lost notification events for groups later in the list). However we don't
want inode reclaim to block on such mark as that would lead to system
just locking up elsewhere.

This commit is the first in the series that paves way towards solving
these conflicting lifetime needs. Instead of anchoring the list of marks
directly in the object, we anchor it in a dedicated structure
(fsnotify_mark_connector) and just point to that structure from the
object. The following commits will also add spinlock protecting the list
and object pointer to the structure.

Andreas Gruenbacher d0a5b995a3 vfs: Add IOP_XATTR inode operations flag
The IOP_XATTR inode operations flag in inode->i_opflags indicates that
the inode has xattr support.  The flag is automatically set by
new_inode() on filesystems with xattr support (where sb->s_xattr is
defined), and cleared otherwise.  Filesystems can explicitly clear it
for inodes that should not have xattr support.

Deepa Dinamani c2050a454c fs: Replace current_fs_time() with current_time()
current_fs_time() uses struct super_block* as an argument.
As per Linus's suggestion, this is changed to take struct
inode* as a parameter instead. This is because the function
is primarily meant for vfs inode timestamps.
Also the function was renamed as per Arnd's suggestion.

Change all calls to current_fs_time() to use the new
current_time() function instead. current_fs_time() will be
deleted.

Deepa Dinamani 3cd886666f vfs: Add current_time() api
current_fs_time() is used for inode timestamps.

Change the signature of the function to take inode pointer
instead of superblock as per Linus's suggestion.

Also, move the api under vfs as per the discussion on the
thread: https://lkml.org/lkml/2016/6/9/36 . As per Arnd's
suggestion on the thread, changing the function name.

current_fs_time() will be deleted after all the references
to it are replaced by current_time().

There was a bug reported by kbuild test bot with the change
as some of the calls to current_time() were made before the
super_block was initialized. Catch these accidental assignments
as timespec_trunc() does for wrong granularities. This allows
for the function to work right even in these circumstances.
But, adds a warning to make the user aware of the bug.

A coccinelle script was used to identify all the current
.alloc_inode super_block callbacks that updated inode timestamps.
proc filesystem was the only one that was modifying inode times
as part of this callback. The series includes a patch to fix that.

Note that timespec_trunc() will also be moved to fs/inode.c
in a separate patch when this will need to be revamped for
bounds checking purposes.

Miklos Szeredi 598e3c8f72 vfs: update ovl inode before relatime check
On overlayfs relatime_need_update() needs inode times to be correct on
overlay inode.  But i_mtime and i_ctime are updated by filesystem code on
underlying inode only, so they will be out-of-date on the overlay inode.

This patch copies the times from the underlying inode if needed.  This
can't be done if called from RCU lookup (link following) but link m/ctime
are not updated by fs, so this is all right.

This patch doesn't change functionality for anything but overlayfs.

file_remove_privs() is called with inode lock on file_inode(), which
proceeds to calling notify_change() on file->f_path.dentry.  Which triggers
the WARN_ON_ONCE(!inode_is_locked(inode)) in addition to deadlocking later
when ovl_setattr tries to lock the underlying inode again.

Fix this mess by not mixing the layers, but doing everything on underlying
dentry/inode.

Vladimir Davydov 05eb6e7263 radix-tree: account nodes to memcg only if explicitly requested
Radix trees may be used not only for storing page cache pages, so
unconditionally accounting radix tree nodes to the current memory cgroup
is bad: if a radix tree node is used for storing data shared among
different cgroups we risk pinning dead memory cgroups forever.

So let's only account radix tree nodes if it was explicitly requested by
passing __GFP_ACCOUNT to INIT_RADIX_TREE.  Currently, we only want to
account page cache entries, so mark mapping->page_tree so.

 "This tree contains some very long awaited work on generalizing the
  user namespace support for mounting filesystems to include filesystems
  with a backing store.  The real world target is fuse but the goal is
  to update the vfs to allow any filesystem to be supported.  This
  patchset is based on a lot of code review and testing to approach that
  goal.

  While looking at what is needed to support the fuse filesystem it
  became clear that there were things like xattrs for security modules
  that needed special treatment.  That the resolution of those concerns
  would not be fuse specific.  That sorting out these general issues
  made most sense at the generic level, where the right people could be
  drawn into the conversation, and the issues could be solved for
  everyone.

  At a high level what this patchset does a couple of simple things:

   - Add a user namespace owner (s_user_ns) to struct super_block.

   - Teach the vfs to handle filesystem uids and gids not mapping into
     to kuids and kgids and being reported as INVALID_UID and
     INVALID_GID in vfs data structures.

  By assigning a user namespace owner filesystems that are mounted with
  only user namespace privilege can be detected.  This allows security
  modules and the like to know which mounts may not be trusted.  This
  also allows the set of uids and gids that are communicated to the
  filesystem to be capped at the set of kuids and kgids that are in the
  owning user namespace of the filesystem.

  One of the crazier corner casees this handles is the case of inodes
  whose i_uid or i_gid are not mapped into the vfs.  Most of the code
  simply doesn't care but it is easy to confuse the inode writeback path
  so no operation that could cause an inode write-back is permitted for
  such inodes (aka only reads are allowed).

  This set of changes starts out by cleaning up the code paths involved
  in user namespace permirted mounts.  Then when things are clean enough
  adds code that cleanly sets s_user_ns.  Then additional restrictions
  are added that are possible now that the filesystem superblock
  contains owner information.

  These changes should not affect anyone in practice, but there are some
  parts of these restrictions that are changes in behavior.

   - Andy's restriction on suid executables that does not honor the
     suid bit when the path is from another mount namespace (think
     /proc/[pid]/fd/) or when the filesystem was mounted by a less
     privileged user.

   - The replacement of the user namespace implicit setting of MNT_NODEV
     with implicitly setting SB_I_NODEV on the filesystem superblock
     instead.

     Using SB_I_NODEV is a stronger form that happens to make this state
     user invisible.  The user visibility can be managed but it caused
     problems when it was introduced from applications reasonably
     expecting mount flags to be what they were set to.

  There is a little bit of work remaining before it is safe to support
  mounting filesystems with backing store in user namespaces, beyond
  what is in this set of changes.

   - Verifying the mounter has permission to read/write the block device
     during mount.

   - Teaching the integrity modules IMA and EVM to handle filesystems
     mounted with only user namespace root and to reduce trust in their
     security xattrs accordingly.

   - Capturing the mounters credentials and using that for permission
     checks in d_automount and the like.  (Given that overlayfs already
     does this, and we need the work in d_automount it make sense to
     generalize this case).

  Furthermore there are a few changes that are on the wishlist:

   - Get all filesystems supporting posix acls using the generic posix
     acls so that posix_acl_fix_xattr_from_user and
     posix_acl_fix_xattr_to_user may be removed.  [Maintainability]

   - Reducing the permission checks in places such as remount to allow
     the superblock owner to perform them.

   - Allowing the superblock owner to chown files with unmapped uids and
     gids to something that is mapped so the files may be treated
     normally.

  I am not considering even obvious relaxations of permission checks
  until it is clear there are no more corner cases that need to be
  locked down and handled generically.

Dave Chinner 6c60d2b574 fs/fs-writeback.c: add a new writeback list for sync
wait_sb_inodes() currently does a walk of all inodes in the filesystem
to find dirty one to wait on during sync.  This is highly inefficient
and wastes a lot of CPU when there are lots of clean cached inodes that
we don't need to wait on.

To avoid this "all inode" walk, we need to track inodes that are
currently under writeback that we need to wait for.  We do this by
adding inodes to a writeback list on the sb when the mapping is first
tagged as having pages under writeback.  wait_sb_inodes() can then walk
this list of "inodes under IO" and wait specifically just for the inodes
that the current sync(2) needs to wait for.

Define a couple helpers to add/remove an inode from the writeback list
and call them when the overall mapping is tagged for or cleared from
writeback.  Update wait_sb_inodes() to walk only the inodes under
writeback due to the sync.

With this change, filesystem sync times are significantly reduced for
fs' with largely populated inode caches and otherwise no other work to

Eric W. Biederman 0bd23d09b8 vfs: Don't modify inodes with a uid or gid unknown to the vfs
When a filesystem outside of init_user_ns is mounted it could have
uids and gids stored in it that do not map to init_user_ns.

The plan is to allow those filesystems to set i_uid to INVALID_UID and
i_gid to INVALID_GID for unmapped uids and gids and then to handle
that strange case in the vfs to ensure there is consistent robust
handling of the weirdness.

Upon a careful review of the vfs and filesystems about the only case
where there is any possibility of confusion or trouble is when the
inode is written back to disk.  In that case filesystems typically
read the inode->i_uid and inode->i_gid and write them to disk even
when just an inode timestamp is being updated.

Which leads to a rule that is very simple to implement and understand
inodes whose i_uid or i_gid is not valid may not be written.

In dealing with access times this means treat those inodes as if the
inode flag S_NOATIME was set.  Reads of the inodes appear safe and
useful, but any write or modification is disallowed.  The only inode
write that is allowed is a chown that sets the uid and gid on the
inode to valid values.  After such a chown the inode is normal and may
be treated as such.

Denying all writes to inodes with uids or gids unknown to the vfs also
prevents several oddball cases where corruption would have occurred
because the vfs does not have complete information.

One problem case that is prevented is attempting to use the gid of a
directory for new inodes where the directories sgid bit is set but the
directories gid is not mapped.

Another problem case avoided is attempting to update the evm hash
after setxattr, removexattr, and setattr.  As the evm hash includeds
the inode->i_uid or inode->i_gid not knowning the uid or gid prevents
a correct evm hash from being computed.  evm hash verification also
fails when i_uid or i_gid is unknown but that is essentially harmless
as it does not cause filesystem corruption.

Al Viro 2864f30142 iget_locked et.al.: make sure we don't return bad inodes
If one thread does iget_locked(), proceeds to try and set
the new inode up and fails, inode will be unhashed and dropped.
However, another thread doing ilookup/iget_locked in the middle
of that would end up finding a half-set-up inode, grabbing
a reference, waiting for it to come unlocked and getting the
resulting bad inode.  It's a race (if that ilookup had been
called just after the failure of setup attempt it wouldn't
have found the sucker at all), particularly unpleasant in
cases when failure is transient/caller-dependent/etc.

While it can be dealt with in the callers, there's no reason
not to handle it in fs/inode.c primitives, especially since
the cost is trivial.

Al Viro 84e710da2a parallel lookups machinery, part 2
We'll need to verify that there's neither a hashed nor in-lookup
dentry with desired parent/name before adding to in-lookup set.

One possible solution would be to hold the parent's ->d_lock through
both checks, but while the in-lookup set is relatively small at any
time, dcache is not.  And holding the parent's ->d_lock through
something like __d_lookup_rcu() would suck too badly.

So we leave the parent's ->d_lock alone, which means that we watch
out for the following scenario:
	* we verify that there's no hashed match
	* existing in-lookup match gets hashed by another process
	* we verify that there's no in-lookup matches and decide
that everything's fine.

Solution: per-directory kinda-sorta seqlock, bumped around the times
we hash something that used to be in-lookup or move (and hash)
something in place of in-lookup.  Then the above would turn into
	* read the counter
	* do dcache lookup
	* if no matches found, check for in-lookup matches
	* if there had been none of those either, check if the
counter has changed; repeat if it has.

The "kinda-sorta" part is due to the fact that we don't have much spare
space in inode.  There is a spare word (shared with i_bdev/i_cdev/i_pipe),
so the counter part is not a problem, but spinlock is a different story.

We could use the parent's ->d_lock, and it would be less painful in
terms of contention, for __d_add() it would be rather inconvenient to
grab; we could do that (using lock_parent()), but...

Fortunately, we can get serialization on the counter itself, and it
might be a good idea in general; we can use cmpxchg() in a loop to
get from even to odd and smp_store_release() from odd to even.

This commit adds the counter and updating logics; the readers will be
added in the next commit.

Andreas Gruenbacher b8a7a3a667 posix_acl: Inode acl caching fixes
When get_acl() is called for an inode whose ACL is not cached yet, the
get_acl inode operation is called to fetch the ACL from the filesystem.
The inode operation is responsible for updating the cached acl with
set_cached_acl().  This is done without locking at the VFS level, so
another task can call set_cached_acl() or forget_cached_acl() before the
get_acl inode operation gets to calling set_cached_acl(), and then
get_acl's call to set_cached_acl() results in caching an outdate ACL.

Prevent this from happening by setting the cached ACL pointer to a
task-specific sentinel value before calling the get_acl inode operation.
Move the responsibility for updating the cached ACL from the get_acl
inode operations to get_acl().  There, only set the cached ACL if the
sentinel value hasn't changed.

The sentinel values are chosen to have odd values.  Likewise, the value
of ACL_NOT_CACHED is odd.  In contrast, ACL object pointers always have
an even value (ACLs are aligned in memory).  This allows to distinguish
uncached ACLs values from ACL objects.

In addition, switch from guarding inode->i_acl and inode->i_default_acl
upates by the inode->i_lock spinlock to using xchg() and cmpxchg().

Filesystems that do not want ACLs returned from their get_acl inode
operations to be cached must call forget_cached_acl() to prevent the VFS
from doing so.

Ross Zwisler f9fe48bece dax: support dirty DAX entries in radix tree
Add support for tracking dirty DAX entries in the struct address_space
radix tree.  This tree is already used for dirty page writeback, and it
already supports the use of exceptional (non struct page*) entries.

In order to properly track dirty DAX pages we will insert new
exceptional entries into the radix tree that represent dirty DAX PTE or
PMD pages.  These exceptional entries will also contain the writeback
addresses for the PTE or PMD faults that we can use at fsync/msync time.

There are currently two types of exceptional entries (shmem and shadow)
that can be placed into the radix tree, and this adds a third.  We rely
on the fact that only one type of exceptional entry can be found in a
given radix tree based on its usage.  This happens for free with DAX vs
shmem but we explicitly prevent shadow entries from being added to radix
trees for DAX mappings.

The only shadow entries that would be generated for DAX radix trees
would be to track zero page mappings that were created for holes.  These
pages would receive minimal benefit from having shadow entries, and the
choice to have only one type of exceptional entry in a given radix tree
makes the logic simpler both in clear_exceptional_entry() and in the
rest of DAX.

everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in

Al Viro 21fc61c73c don't put symlink bodies in pagecache into highmem
kmap() in page_follow_link_light() needed to go - allowing to hold
an arbitrary number of kmaps for long is a great way to deadlocking
the system.

new helper (inode_nohighmem(inode)) needs to be used for pagecache
symlinks inodes; done for all in-tree cases.  page_follow_link_light()
instrumented to yell about anything missed.

Josef Bacik ac05fbb400 inode: don't softlockup when evicting inodes
On a box with a lot of ram (148gb) I can make the box softlockup after running
an fs_mark job that creates hundreds of millions of empty files.  This is
because we never generate enough memory pressure to keep the number of inodes on
our unused list low, so when we go to unmount we have to evict ~100 million
inodes.  This makes one processor a very unhappy person, so add a cond_resched()
in dispose_list() and if we need a resched when processing the s_inodes list do
that and run dispose_list() on what we've currently culled.  Thanks,

Dave Chinner c7f5408493 inode: rename i_wb_list to i_io_list
There's a small consistency problem between the inode and writeback
naming. Writeback calls the "for IO" inode queues b_io and
b_more_io, but the inode calls these the "writeback list" or
i_wb_list. This makes it hard to an new "under writeback" list to
the inode, or call it an "under IO" list on the bdi because either
way we'll have writeback on IO and IO on writeback and it'll just be
confusing. I'm getting confused just writing this!

So, rename the inode "for IO" list variable to i_io_list so we can
add a new "writeback list" in a subsequent patch.

Dave Chinner 74278da9f7 inode: convert inode_sb_list_lock to per-sb
The process of reducing contention on per-superblock inode lists
starts with moving the locking to match the per-superblock inode
list. This takes the global lock out of the picture and reduces the
contention problems to within a single filesystem. This doesn't get
rid of contention as the locks still have global CPU scope, but it
does isolate operations on different superblocks form each other.

Carlos Maiolino 2adc376c55 vfs: avoid creation of inode number 0 in get_next_ino
currently, get_next_ino() is able to create inodes with inode number = 0.
This have a bad impact in the filesystems relying in this function to generate
inode numbers.

While there is no problem at all in having inodes with number 0, userspace tools
which handle file management tasks can have problems handling these files, like
for example, the impossiblity of users to delete these files, since glibc will
ignore them. So, I believe the best way is kernel to avoid creating them.

This problem has been raised previously, but the old thread didn't have any
other update for a year+, and I've seen too many users hitting the same issue
regarding the impossibility to delete files while using filesystems relying on
this function. So, I'm starting the thread again, with the same patch
that I believe is enough to address this problem.

Jan Kara 45f147a1bc fs: Call security_ops->inode_killpriv on truncate
Comment in include/linux/security.h says that ->inode_killpriv() should
be called when setuid bit is being removed and that similar security
labels (in fact this applies only to file capabilities) should be
removed at this time as well. However we don't call ->inode_killpriv()
when we remove suid bit on truncate.

We fix the problem by calling ->inode_need_killpriv() and subsequently
->inode_killpriv() on truncate the same way as we do it on file write.

After this patch there's only one user of should_remove_suid() - ocfs2 -
and indeed it's buggy because it doesn't call ->inode_killpriv() on
write. However fixing it is difficult because of special locking
constraints.

file_remove_suid() is a misnomer since it removes also file capabilities
stored in xattrs and sets S_NOSEC flag. Also should_remove_suid() tells
something else than whether file_remove_suid() call is necessary which
leads to bugs.

Jan Kara 2426f39100 fs: Fix S_NOSEC handling
file_remove_suid() could mistakenly set S_NOSEC inode bit when root was
modifying the file. As a result following writes to the file by ordinary
user would avoid clearing suid or sgid bits.

Fix the bug by checking actual mode bits before setting S_NOSEC.

Tejun Heo 52ebea749a writeback: make backing_dev_info host cgroup-specific bdi_writebacks
For the planned cgroup writeback support, on each bdi
(backing_dev_info), each memcg will be served by a separate wb
(bdi_writeback).  This patch updates bdi so that a bdi can host
multiple wbs (bdi_writebacks).

On the default hierarchy, blkcg implicitly enables memcg.  This allows
using memcg's page ownership for attributing writeback IOs, and every
memcg - blkcg combination can be served by its own wb by assigning a
dedicated wb to each memcg.  This means that there may be multiple
wb's of a bdi mapped to the same blkcg.  As congested state is per
blkcg - bdi combination, those wb's should share the same congested
state.  This is achieved by tracking congested state via
bdi_writeback_congested structs which are keyed by blkcg.

bdi->wb remains unchanged and will keep serving the root cgroup.
cgwb's (cgroup wb's) for non-root cgroups are created on-demand or
looked up while dirtying an inode according to the memcg of the page
being dirtied or current task.  Each cgwb is indexed on bdi->cgwb_tree
by its memcg id.  Once an inode is associated with its wb, it can be
retrieved using inode_to_wb().

Currently, none of the filesystems has FS_CGROUP_WRITEBACK and all
pages will keep being associated with bdi->wb.

v3: inode_attach_wb() in account_page_dirtied() moved inside
    mapping_cap_account_dirty() block where it's known to be !NULL.
    Also, an unnecessary NULL check before kfree() removed.  Both
    detected by the kbuild bot.

v2: Updated so that wb association is per inode and wb is per memcg
    rather than blkcg.

NeilBrown 8fa9dd2466 VFS/namei: make the use of touch_atime() in get_link() RCU-safe.
touch_atime is not RCU-safe, and so cannot be called on an RCU walk.
However, in situations where RCU-walk makes a difference, the symlink
will likely to accessed much more often than it is useful to update
the atime.

So split out the test of "Does the atime actually need to be updated"
into  atime_needs_update(), and have get_link() unlazy if it finds that
it will need to do that update.

Jens Axboe fe0f07d08e direct-io: only inc/dec inode->i_dio_count for file systems
do_blockdev_direct_IO() increments and decrements the inode
->i_dio_count for each IO operation. It does this to protect against
truncate of a file. Block devices don't need this sort of protection.

For a capable multiqueue setup, this atomic int is the only shared
state between applications accessing the device for O_DIRECT, and it
presents a scaling wall for that. In my testing, as much as 30% of
system time is spent incrementing and decrementing this value. A mixed
read/write workload improved from ~2.5M IOPS to ~9.6M IOPS, with
better latencies too. Before:

Add a new direct-io flags, DIO_SKIP_DIO_COUNT, which tells
do_blockdev_direct_IO() that it need not worry about incrementing
or decrementing the inode i_dio_count for this caller.
