Jan Kara 1c2d14212b ext2: Fix underflow in ext2_max_size()
When ext2 filesystem is created with 64k block size, ext2_max_size()
will return value less than 0. Also, we cannot write any file in this fs
since the sb->maxbytes is less than 0. The core of the problem is that
the size of block index tree for such large block size is more than
i_blocks can carry. So fix the computation to count with this
possibility.

File size limits computed with the new function for the full range of
possible block sizes look like:

When setting the first xattr, we automatically enable
EXT2_FEATURE_COMPAT_EXT_ATTR. However we forget to call

consequences are minor anyway - since the feature is compat one, only
old e2fsck which does not understand xattrs could do something bad.

This patch is reworked from an earlier patch that Dan has posted:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10131727/

VM_MIXEDMAP is used by dax to direct mm paths like vm_normal_page() that
the memory page it is dealing with is not typical memory from the linear
map. The get_user_pages_fast() path, since it does not resolve the vma,
is already using {pte,pmd}_devmap() as a stand-in for VM_MIXEDMAP, so we
use that as a VM_MIXEDMAP replacement in some locations. In the cases
where there is no pte to consult we fallback to using vma_is_dax() to
detect the VM_MIXEDMAP special case.

Now that we have explicit driver pfn_t-flag opt-in/opt-out for
get_user_pages() support for DAX we can stop setting VM_MIXEDMAP. This
also means we no longer need to worry about safely manipulating vm_flags
in a future where we support dynamically changing the dax mode of a
file.

DAX should also now be supported with madvise_behavior(), vma_merge(),
and copy_page_range().

This patch has been tested against ndctl unit test. It has also been
tested against xfstests commit: 625515d using fake pmem created by
memmap and no additional issues have been observed.

Pull vfs icache updates from Al Viro:

 - NFS mkdir/open_by_handle race fix

 - analogous solution for FUSE, replacing the one currently in mainline

 - new primitive to be used when discarding halfway set up inodes on
   failed object creation; gives sane warranties re icache lookups not
   returning such doomed by still not freed inodes. A bunch of
   filesystems switched to that animal.

 - Miklos' fix for last cycle regression in iget5_locked(); -stable will
   need a slightly different variant, unfortunately.

 - misc bits and pieces around things icache-related (in adfs and jfs).

Arnd Bergmann fe2c32545b ext2: use ktime_get_real_seconds for timestamps
get_seconds() is deprecated because of the y2038 overflow, so users
should migrate to 64-bit timestamps using ktime_get_real_seconds().
In ext2, the timestamps in the superblock and in the inode are all
limited to 32-bit, and this won't get fixed, so let's just stop
using the deprecated interface and keep truncating.

All users of ext2 should migrate to ext4 before 2038 to prevent this
from causing problems.

Chengguang Xu 27e6ed54a3 ext2: add warning when specifying nocheck option
The option nocheck(nocheck/check=none) is useless but considering
backwards compatibility it's better to print warning for a while
before completely remove from the code.

This patch add proper warning message for option 'nocheck' and
remove unnecessary comment/function declaration which is used for
removed option 'check'.

Kees Cook 6da2ec5605 treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array()
The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This
patch replaces cases of:

        kmalloc(a * b, gfp)

with:
        kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp)

as well as handling cases of:

        kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp)

with:

        kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)

as it's slightly less ugly than:

        kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp)

This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:

        kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp)

though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.

Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.

The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own
implementation of kmalloc().

The Coccinelle script used for this was:

// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().

Pull xfs updates from Darrick Wong:
 "New features this cycle include the ability to relabel mounted
  filesystems, support for fallocated swapfiles, and using FUA for pure
  data O_DSYNC directio writes. With this cycle we begin to integrate
  online filesystem repair and refactor the growfs code in preparation
  for eventual subvolume support, though the road ahead for both
  features is quite long.

  There are also numerous refactorings of the iomap code to remove
  unnecessary log overhead, to disentangle some of the quota code, and
  to prepare for buffer head removal in a future upstream kernel.

  Metadata validation continues to improve, both in the hot path
  veifiers and the online filesystem check code. I anticipate sending a
  second pull request in a few days with more metadata validation
  improvements.

  This series has been run through a full xfstests run over the weekend

  no major failures reported.

Dave Jiang 80660f2025 dax: change bdev_dax_supported() to support boolean returns
The function return values are confusing with the way the function is
named. We expect a true or false return value but it actually returns
0/-errno. This makes the code very confusing. Changing the return values
to return a bool where if DAX is supported then return true and no DAX
support returns false.

Darrick J. Wong ba23cba9b3 fs: allow per-device dax status checking for filesystems
Change bdev_dax_supported so it takes a bdev parameter. This enables
multi-device filesystems like xfs to check that a dax device can work for
the particular filesystem. Once that's in place, actually fix all the
parts of XFS where we need to be able to distinguish between datadev and
rtdev.

This patch fixes the problem where we screw up the dax support checking
in xfs if the datadev and rtdev have different dax capabilities.

Al Viro 5aa1437d2d ext2: fix a block leak
open file, unlink it, then use ioctl(2) to make it immutable or
append only. Now close it and watch the blocks *not* freed...

Immutable/append-only checks belong in ->setattr().
Note: the bug is old and backport to anything prior to 737f2e93b9
("ext2: convert to use the new truncate convention") will need
these checks lifted into ext2_setattr().

Al Viro 1e2e547a93 do d_instantiate/unlock_new_inode combinations safely
For anything NFS-exported we do _not_ want to unlock new inode
before it has grown an alias; original set of fixes got the
ordering right, but missed the nasty complication in case of
lockdep being enabled - unlock_new_inode() does
	lockdep_annotate_inode_mutex_key(inode)
which can only be done before anyone gets a chance to touch
->i_mutex. Unfortunately, flipping the order and doing
unlock_new_inode() before d_instantiate() opens a window when
mkdir can race with open-by-fhandle on a guessed fhandle, leading
to multiple aliases for a directory inode and all the breakage
that follows from that.

	Correct solution: a new primitive (d_instantiate_new())
combining these two in the right order - lockdep annotate, then
d_instantiate(), then the rest of unlock_new_inode(). All
combinations of d_instantiate() with unlock_new_inode() should
be converted to that.

Merge tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm

Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams:
 "This cycle was was not something I ever want to repeat as there were
  several late changes that have only now just settled.

  Half of the branch up to commit d2c997c0f1 ("fs, dax: use
  page->mapping to warn...") have been in -next for several releases.
  The of_pmem driver and the address range scrub rework were late
  arrivals, and the dax work was scaled back at the last moment.

  The of_pmem driver missed a previous merge window due to an oversight.
  A sense of obligation to rectify that miss is why it is included for
  4.17. It has acks from PowerPC folks. Stephen reported a build failure
  that only occurs when merging it with your latest tree, for now I have
  fixed that up by disabling modular builds of of_pmem. A test merge
  with your tree has received a build success report from the 0day robot
  over 156 configs.

  An initial version of the ARS rework was submitted before the merge
  window. It is self contained to libnvdimm, a net code reduction, and
  passing all unit tests.

  The filesystem-dax changes are based on the wait_var_event()
  functionality from tip/sched/core. However, late review feedback
  showed that those changes regressed truncate performance to a large
  degree. The branch was rewound to drop the truncate behavior change
  and now only includes preparation patches and cleanups (with full acks
  and reviews). The finalization of this dax-dma-vs-trnucate work will
  need to wait for 4.18.

  Summary:

   - A rework of the filesytem-dax implementation provides for detection
     of unmap operations (truncate / hole punch) colliding with
     in-progress device-DMA. A fix for these collisions remains a
     work-in-progress pending resolution of truncate latency and
     starvation regressions.

   - The of_pmem driver expands the users of libnvdimm outside of x86
     and ACPI to describe an implementation of persistent memory on
     PowerPC with Open Firmware / Device tree.

   - Address Range Scrub (ARS) handling is completely rewritten to
     account for the fact that ARS may run for 100s of seconds and there
     is no platform defined way to cancel it. ARS will now no longer
     block namespace initialization.

Goffredo Baroncelli c472c07bfe iversion: Rename make inode_cmp_iversion{+raw} to inode_eq_iversion{+raw}
The function inode_cmp_iversion{+raw} is counter-intuitive, because it
returns true when the counters are different and false when these are equal.

Rename it to inode_eq_iversion{+raw}, which will returns true when
the counters are equal and false otherwise.

Dan Williams b4b5798cea ext2: auto disable dax instead of failing mount
Bring the ext2 filesystem in line with xfs that only warns and continues
when the "-o dax" option is specified to mount and the backing device
does not support dax. This is in preparation for removing dax support
from devices that do not enable get_user_pages() operations on dax
mappings. In other words 'gup' support is required and configurations
that were using so called 'page-less' dax will be converted back to
using the page cache.

Removing the broken 'page-less' dax support is a pre-requisite for
removing the "EXPERIMENTAL" warning when mounting a filesystem in dax
mode.

David Windsor 85212d4e04 ext2: Define usercopy region in ext2_inode_cache slab cache
The ext2 symlink pathnames, stored in struct ext2_inode_info.i_data and
therefore contained in the ext2_inode_cache slab cache, need to be copied
to/from userspace.

cache object allocation:
    fs/ext2/super.c:
        ext2_alloc_inode(...):
            struct ext2_inode_info *ei;
            ...
            ei = kmem_cache_alloc(ext2_inode_cachep, GFP_NOFS);
            ...
            return &ei->vfs_inode;

    fs/ext2/ext2.h:
        EXT2_I(struct inode *inode):
            return container_of(inode, struct ext2_inode_info, vfs_inode);

    fs/ext2/namei.c:
        ext2_symlink(...):
            ...
            inode->i_link = (char *)&EXT2_I(inode)->i_data;

example usage trace:
    readlink_copy+0x43/0x70
    vfs_readlink+0x62/0x110
    SyS_readlinkat+0x100/0x130

    fs/namei.c:
        readlink_copy(..., link):
            ...
            copy_to_user(..., link, len);

        (inlined into vfs_readlink)
        generic_readlink(dentry, ...):
            struct inode *inode = d_inode(dentry);
            const char *link = inode->i_link;
            ...
            readlink_copy(..., link);

In support of usercopy hardening, this patch defines a region in the
ext2_inode_cache slab cache in which userspace copy operations are
allowed.

This region is known as the slab cache's usercopy region. Slab caches
can now check that each dynamically sized copy operation involving
cache-managed memory falls entirely within the slab's usercopy region.

This patch is modified from Brad Spengler/PaX Team's PAX_USERCOPY
whitelisting code in the last public patch of grsecurity/PaX based on my
understanding of the code. Changes or omissions from the original code are
mine and don't reflect the original grsecurity/PaX code.

Linus Torvalds 1751e8a6cb Rename superblock flags (MS_xyz -> SB_xyz)
This is a pure automated search-and-replace of the internal kernel
superblock flags.

The s_flags are now called SB_*, with the names and the values for the
moment mirroring the MS_* flags that they're equivalent to.

Note how the MS_xyz flags are the ones passed to the mount system call,

Linus Torvalds a3841f94c7 libnvdimm for 4.15
* Introduce MAP_SYNC and MAP_SHARED_VALIDATE, a mechanism to enable
  'userspace flush' of persistent memory updates via filesystem-dax
   mappings. It arranges for any filesystem metadata updates that may be
   required to satisfy a write fault to also be flushed ("on disk") before
   the kernel returns to userspace from the fault handler. Effectively
   every write-fault that dirties metadata completes an fsync() before
   returning from the fault handler. The new MAP_SHARED_VALIDATE mapping
   type guarantees that the MAP_SYNC flag is validated as supported by the
   filesystem's ->mmap() file operation.

 * Add support for the standard ACPI 6.2 label access methods that
   replace the NVDIMM_FAMILY_INTEL (vendor specific) label methods. This
   enables interoperability with environments that only implement the
   standardized methods.

 * Add support for the ACPI 6.2 NVDIMM media error injection methods.

 * Add support for the NVDIMM_FAMILY_INTEL v1.6 DIMM commands for latch
   last shutdown status, firmware update, SMART error injection, and
   SMART alarm threshold control.

 * Cleanup physical address information disclosures to be root-only.

 * Fix revalidation of the DIMM "locked label area" status to support
   dynamic unlock of the label area.

 * Expand unit test infrastructure to mock the ACPI 6.2 Translate SPA
   (system-physical-address) command and error injection commands.

Greg Kroah-Hartman b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
   considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

   For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0                                              11139

   and resulted in the first patch in this series.

   If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
   Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note                        930

   and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
   of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
   any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
   it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note                       270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                      169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause)    21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause)    17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                      15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                       14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause)    5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                       4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note                        3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT)              3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT)             1

   and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
   license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
   licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
   resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
   which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
   confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
   the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
   files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
   was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Ross Zwisler 91d25ba8a6 dax: use common 4k zero page for dax mmap reads
When servicing mmap() reads from file holes the current DAX code
allocates a page cache page of all zeroes and places the struct page
pointer in the mapping->page_tree radix tree.

This has three major drawbacks:

1) It consumes memory unnecessarily. For every 4k page that is read via
   a DAX mmap() over a hole, we allocate a new page cache page. This
   means that if you read 1GiB worth of pages, you end up using 1GiB of
   zeroed memory. This is easily visible by looking at the overall
   memory consumption of the system or by looking at /proc/[pid]/smaps:

	7f62e72b3000-7f63272b3000 rw-s 00000000 103:00 12   /root/dax/data
	Size:            1048576 kB
	Rss:             1048576 kB
	Pss:             1048576 kB
	Shared_Clean:          0 kB
	Shared_Dirty:          0 kB
	Private_Clean:   1048576 kB
	Private_Dirty:         0 kB
	Referenced:      1048576 kB
	Anonymous:             0 kB
	LazyFree:              0 kB
	AnonHugePages:         0 kB
	ShmemPmdMapped:        0 kB
	Shared_Hugetlb:        0 kB
	Private_Hugetlb:       0 kB
	Swap:                  0 kB
	SwapPss:               0 kB
	KernelPageSize:        4 kB
	MMUPageSize:           4 kB
	Locked:                0 kB

2) It is slower than using a common zero page because each page fault
   has more work to do. Instead of just inserting a common zero page we
   have to allocate a page cache page, zero it, and then insert it. Here
   are the average latencies of dax_load_hole() as measured by ftrace on
   a random test box:

    Old method, using zeroed page cache pages:	3.4 us
    New method, using the common 4k zero page:	0.8 us

   This was the average latency over 1 GiB of sequential reads done by
   this simple fio script:

     [global]
     size=1G
     filename=/root/dax/data
     fallocate=none
     [io]
     rw=read
     ioengine=mmap

3) The fact that we had to check for both DAX exceptional entries and
   for page cache pages in the radix tree made the DAX code more
   complex.

Solve these issues by following the lead of the DAX PMD code and using a
common 4k zero page instead. As with the PMD code we will now insert a
DAX exceptional entry into the radix tree instead of a struct page
pointer which allows us to remove all the special casing in the DAX
code.

Note that we do still pretty aggressively check for regular pages in the
DAX radix tree, especially where we take action based on the bits set in
the page. If we ever find a regular page in our radix tree now that
most likely means that someone besides DAX is inserting pages (which has
happened lots of times in the past), and we want to find that out early
and fail loudly.

This solution also removes the extra memory consumption. Here is that
same /proc/[pid]/smaps after 1GiB of reading from a hole with the new
code:

	7f2054a74000-7f2094a74000 rw-s 00000000 103:00 12   /root/dax/data
	Size:            1048576 kB
	Rss:                   0 kB
	Pss:                   0 kB
	Shared_Clean:          0 kB
	Shared_Dirty:          0 kB
	Private_Clean:         0 kB
	Private_Dirty:         0 kB
	Referenced:            0 kB
	Anonymous:             0 kB
	LazyFree:              0 kB
	AnonHugePages:         0 kB
	ShmemPmdMapped:        0 kB
	Shared_Hugetlb:        0 kB
	Private_Hugetlb:       0 kB
	Swap:                  0 kB
	SwapPss:               0 kB
	KernelPageSize:        4 kB
	MMUPageSize:           4 kB
	Locked:                0 kB

Overall system memory consumption is similarly improved.

Another major change is that we remove dax_pfn_mkwrite() from our fault
flow, and instead rely on the page fault itself to make the PTE dirty
and writeable. The following description from the patch adding the
vm_insert_mixed_mkwrite() call explains this a little more:

   "To be able to use the common 4k zero page in DAX we need to have our
    PTE fault path look more like our PMD fault path where a PTE entry
    can be marked as dirty and writeable as it is first inserted rather
    than waiting for a follow-up dax_pfn_mkwrite() =>
    finish_mkwrite_fault() call.

    Right now we can rely on having a dax_pfn_mkwrite() call because we
    can distinguish between these two cases in do_wp_page():

            case 1: 4k zero page => writable DAX storage
            case 2: read-only DAX storage => writeable DAX storage

    This distinction is made by via vm_normal_page(). vm_normal_page()
    returns false for the common 4k zero page, though, just as it does
    for DAX ptes. Instead of special casing the DAX + 4k zero page case
    we will simplify our DAX PTE page fault sequence so that it matches
    our DAX PMD sequence, and get rid of the dax_pfn_mkwrite() helper.
    We will instead use dax_iomap_fault() to handle write-protection
    faults.

    This means that insert_pfn() needs to follow the lead of
    insert_pfn_pmd() and allow us to pass in a 'mkwrite' flag. If
    'mkwrite' is set insert_pfn() will do the work that was previously
    done by wp_page_reuse() as part of the dax_pfn_mkwrite() call path"

When changing a file's acl mask, ext2_set_acl() will first set the group

If the second part fails (due to lack of space, for example) and the file
had no acl attribute to begin with, the system will from now on assume
that the mask permission bits are actual group permission bits, potentially
granting access to the wrong users.

Prevent this by only changing the inode mode after the acl has been set.

When new directory 'DIR1' is created in a directory 'DIR0' with SGID bit
set, DIR1 is expected to have SGID bit set (and owning group equal to
the owning group of 'DIR0'). However when 'DIR0' also has some default
ACLs that 'DIR1' inherits, setting these ACLs will result in SGID bit on
'DIR1' to get cleared if user is not member of the owning group.

Fix the problem by creating __ext2_set_acl() function that does not call
posix_acl_update_mode() and use it when inheriting ACLs. That prevents
SGID bit clearing and the mode has been properly set by
posix_acl_create() anyway.

Ernesto A. Fernández 4d9bcaddac ext2: Fix memory leak when truncate races ext2_get_blocks
Buffer heads referencing indirect blocks may not be released if the file
is truncated at the right time. This happens because ext2_get_branch()
returns NULL when it finds the whole chain of indirect blocks already
set, and when truncate alters the chain this value of NULL is
treated as the address of the last head to be released. Handle this in the
same way as it's done after the got_it label.

Pull Writeback error handling updates from Jeff Layton:
 "This pile represents the bulk of the writeback error handling fixes
  that I have for this cycle. Some of the earlier patches in this pile
  may look trivial but they are prerequisites for later patches in the
  series.

  The aim of this set is to improve how we track and report writeback
  errors to userland. Most applications that care about data integrity
  will periodically call fsync/fdatasync/msync to ensure that their
  writes have made it to the backing store.

  For a very long time, we have tracked writeback errors using two flags
  in the address_space: AS_EIO and AS_ENOSPC. Those flags are set when a
  writeback error occurs (via mapping_set_error) and are cleared as a
  side-effect of filemap_check_errors (as you noted yesterday). This
  model really sucks for userland.

  Only the first task to call fsync (or msync or fdatasync) will see the
  error. Any subsequent task calling fsync on a file will get back 0
  (unless another writeback error occurs in the interim). If I have
  several tasks writing to a file and calling fsync to ensure that their
  writes got stored, then I need to have them coordinate with one
  another. That's difficult enough, but in a world of containerized
  setups that coordination may even not be possible.

  But wait...it gets worse!

  The calls to filemap_check_errors can be buried pretty far down in the
  call stack, and there are internal callers of filemap_write_and_wait
  and the like that also end up clearing those errors. Many of those
  callers ignore the error return from that function or return it to
  userland at nonsensical times (e.g. truncate() or stat()). If I get
  back -EIO on a truncate, there is no reason to think that it was
  because some previous writeback failed, and a subsequent fsync() will
  (incorrectly) return 0.

  This pile aims to do three things:

   1) ensure that when a writeback error occurs that that error will be
      reported to userland on a subsequent fsync/fdatasync/msync call,
      regardless of what internal callers are doing

   2) report writeback errors on all file descriptions that were open at
      the time that the error occurred. This is a user-visible change,
      but I think most applications are written to assume this behavior
      anyway. Those that aren't are unlikely to be hurt by it.

   3) document what filesystems should do when there is a writeback
      error. Today, there is very little consistency between them, and a
      lot of cargo-cult copying. We need to make it very clear what
      filesystems should do in this situation.

  To achieve this, the set adds a new data type (errseq_t) and then
  builds new writeback error tracking infrastructure around that. Once
  all of that is in place, we change the filesystems to use the new
  infrastructure for reporting wb errors to userland.

  Note that this is just the initial foray into cleaning up this mess.
  There is a lot of work remaining here:

   1) convert the rest of the filesystems in a similar fashion. Once the
      initial set is in, then I think most other fs' will be fairly
      simple to convert. Hopefully most of those can in via individual
      filesystem trees.

   2) convert internal waiters on writeback to use errseq_t for
      detecting errors instead of relying on the AS_* flags. I have some
      draft patches for this for ext4, but they are not quite ready for
      prime time yet.

  This was a discussion topic this year at LSF/MM too. If you're
  interested in the gory details, LWN has some good articles about this:

Jeff Layton dac257f741 fs: check for writeback errors after syncing out buffers in generic_file_fsync
ext2 currently does a test+clear of the AS_EIO flag, which is
is problematic for some coming changes.

What we really need to do instead is call filemap_check_errors
in __generic_file_fsync after syncing out the buffers. That
will be sufficient for this case, and help other callers detect
these errors properly as well.

With that, we don't need to twiddle it in ext2.

Linus Torvalds 0fcc3ab23d Merge branch 'libnvdimm-fixes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm
Pull libnvdimm fixes from Dan Williams:
 "Incremental fixes and a small feature addition on top of the main
  libnvdimm 4.12 pull request:

   - Geert noticed that tinyconfig was bloated by BLOCK selecting DAX.
     The size regression is fixed by moving all dax helpers into the
     dax-core and only specifying "select DAX" for FS_DAX and
     dax-capable drivers. He also asked for clarification of the
     NR_DEV_DAX config option which, on closer look, does not need to be
     a config option at all. Mike also throws in a DEV_DAX_PMEM fixup
     for good measure.

   - Ben's attention to detail on -stable patch submissions caught a
     case where the recent fixes to arch_copy_from_iter_pmem() missed a
     condition where we strand dirty data in the cache. This is tagged
     for -stable and will also be included in the rework of the pmem api
     to a proposed {memcpy,copy_user}_flushcache() interface for 4.13.

   - Vishal adds a feature that missed the initial pull due to pending
     review feedback. It allows the kernel to clear media errors when
     initializing a BTT (atomic sector update driver) instance on a pmem
     namespace.

   - Ross noticed that the dax_device + dax_operations conversion broke
     __dax_zero_page_range(). The nvdimm unit tests fail to check this
     path, but xfstests immediately trips over it. No excuse for missing
     this before submitting the 4.12 pull request.

  These all pass the nvdimm unit tests and an xfstests spot check. The
  set has received a build success notification from the kbuild robot"

Dan Williams ef51042472 block, dax: move "select DAX" from BLOCK to FS_DAX
For configurations that do not enable DAX filesystems or drivers, do not
require the DAX core to be built.

Given that the 'direct_access' method has been removed from
'block_device_operations', we can also go ahead and remove the
block-related dax helper functions from fs/block_dev.c to
drivers/dax/super.c. This keeps dax details out of the block layer and
lets the DAX core be built as a module in the FS_DAX=n case.

Filesystems need to include dax.h to call bdev_dax_supported().

Linus Torvalds 53ef7d0e20 libnvdimm for 4.12
* Region media error reporting: A libnvdimm region device is the parent
 to one or more namespaces. To date, media errors have been reported via
 the "badblocks" attribute attached to pmem block devices for namespaces
 in "raw" or "memory" mode. Given that namespaces can be in "device-dax"
 or "btt-sector" mode this new interface reports media errors
 generically, i.e. independent of namespace modes or state. This
 subsequently allows userspace tooling to craft "ACPI 6.1 Section
 9.20.7.6 Function Index 4 - Clear Uncorrectable Error" requests and
 submit them via the ioctl path for NVDIMM root bus devices.

 * Introduce 'struct dax_device' and 'struct dax_operations': Prompted by
 a request from Linus and feedback from Christoph this allows for dax
 capable drivers to publish their own custom dax operations. This fixes
 the broken assumption that all dax operations are related to a
 persistent memory device, and makes it easier for other architectures
 and platforms to add customized persistent memory support.

 * 'libnvdimm' core updates: A new "deep_flush" sysfs attribute is
 available for storage appliance applications to manually trigger memory
 controllers to drain write-pending buffers that would otherwise be
 flushed automatically by the platform ADR (asynchronous-DRAM-refresh)
 mechanism at a power loss event. Support for "locked" DIMMs is included
 to prevent namespaces from surfacing when the namespace label data area
 is locked. Finally, fixes for various reported deadlocks and crashes,
 also tagged for -stable.

 * ACPI / nfit driver updates: General updates of the nfit driver to add
 DSM command overrides, ACPI 6.1 health state flags support, DSM payload
 debug available by default, and various fixes.

Merge tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.12' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm

Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams:
 "The bulk of this has been in multiple -next releases. There were a few
  late breaking fixes and small features that got added in the last
  couple days, but the whole set has received a build success
  notification from the kbuild robot.

  Change summary:

   - Region media error reporting: A libnvdimm region device is the
     parent to one or more namespaces. To date, media errors have been
     reported via the "badblocks" attribute attached to pmem block
     devices for namespaces in "raw" or "memory" mode. Given that
     namespaces can be in "device-dax" or "btt-sector" mode this new
     interface reports media errors generically, i.e. independent of
     namespace modes or state.

     This subsequently allows userspace tooling to craft "ACPI 6.1
     Section 9.20.7.6 Function Index 4 - Clear Uncorrectable Error"
     requests and submit them via the ioctl path for NVDIMM root bus
     devices.

   - Introduce 'struct dax_device' and 'struct dax_operations': Prompted
     by a request from Linus and feedback from Christoph this allows for
     dax capable drivers to publish their own custom dax operations.
     This fixes the broken assumption that all dax operations are
     related to a persistent memory device, and makes it easier for
     other architectures and platforms to add customized persistent
     memory support.

   - 'libnvdimm' core updates: A new "deep_flush" sysfs attribute is
     available for storage appliance applications to manually trigger
     memory controllers to drain write-pending buffers that would
     otherwise be flushed automatically by the platform ADR
     (asynchronous-DRAM-refresh) mechanism at a power loss event.
     Support for "locked" DIMMs is included to prevent namespaces from
     surfacing when the namespace label data area is locked. Finally,
     fixes for various reported deadlocks and crashes, also tagged for
     -stable.

   - ACPI / nfit driver updates: General updates of the nfit driver to
     add DSM command overrides, ACPI 6.1 health state flags support, DSM
     payload debug available by default, and various fixes.

Jan Kara 6554766150 ext2: Call dquot_writeback_dquots() with s_umount held
ext2_sync_fs() could be called without s_umount semaphore held when
called through ext2_write_super() from __ext2_write_inode(). This
function then calls dquot_writeback_dquots() which relies on s_umount to
be held for protection against other quota operations.

In fact __ext2_write_inode() does not need all the functionality
ext2_write_super() provides. It is enough to just write the superblock.
So use ext2_sync_super() instead.

Dave Jiang c791ace1e7 mm: replace FAULT_FLAG_SIZE with parameter to huge_fault
Since the introduction of FAULT_FLAG_SIZE to the vm_fault flag, it has
been somewhat painful with getting the flags set and removed at the
correct locations. More than one kernel oops was introduced due to
difficulties of getting the placement correctly.

Remove the flag values and introduce an input parameter to huge_fault
that indicates the size of the page entry. This makes the code easier
to trace and should avoid the issues we see with the fault flags where
removal of the flag was necessary in the fallback paths.

Dave Jiang a2d581675d mm,fs,dax: change ->pmd_fault to ->huge_fault
Patch series "1G transparent hugepage support for device dax", v2.

The following series implements support for 1G trasparent hugepage on
x86 for device dax. The bulk of the code was written by Mathew Wilcox a
while back supporting transparent 1G hugepage for fs DAX. I have
forward ported the relevant bits to 4.10-rc. The current submission has
only the necessary code to support device DAX.

Comments from Dan Williams: So the motivation and intended user of this
functionality mirrors the motivation and users of 1GB page support in
hugetlbfs. Given expected capacities of persistent memory devices an
in-memory database may want to reduce tlb pressure beyond what they can
already achieve with 2MB mappings of a device-dax file. We have
customer feedback to that effect as Willy mentioned in his previous
version of these patches [1].

[1]: https://lkml.org/lkml/2016/1/31/52

Comments from Nilesh @ Oracle:

There are applications which have a process model; and if you assume
10,000 processes attempting to mmap all the 6TB memory available on a
server; we are looking at the following:

processes         : 10,000
memory            :    6TB
pte @ 4k page size: 8 bytes / 4K of memory * #processes = 6TB / 4k * 8 * 10000 = 1.5GB * 80000 = 120,000GB
pmd @ 2M page size: 120,000 / 512 = ~240GB
pud @ 1G page size: 240GB / 512 = ~480MB

As you can see with 2M pages, this system will use up an exorbitant
amount of DRAM to hold the page tables; but the 1G pages finally brings
it down to a reasonable level. Memory sizes will keep increasing; so
this number will keep increasing.

An argument can be made to convert the applications from process model
to thread model, but in the real world that may not be always practical.
Hopefully this helps explain the use case where this is valuable.

This patch (of 3):

In preparation for adding the ability to handle PUD pages, convert
vm_operations_struct.pmd_fault to vm_operations_struct.huge_fault.  The
vm_fault structure is extended to include a union of the different page
table pointers that may be needed, and three flag bits are reserved to
indicate which type of pointer is in the union.

  # CONFIG_XFS_FS is not set
  # CONFIG_FS_IOMAP depends on the above filesystems, as is not set
  CONFIG_FS_DAX=y

generates build warnings about unused functions in fs/dax.c:

  fs/dax.c:878:12: warning: `dax_insert_mapping' defined but not used [-Wunused-function]

   static void *grab_mapping_entry(struct address_space *mapping, pgoff_t index,
                ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now that the struct buffer_head based DAX fault paths and I/O path have
been removed we really depend on iomap support being present for DAX.
Make this explicit by selecting FS_IOMAP if we compile in DAX support.

This allows us to remove conditional selections of FS_IOMAP when FS_DAX
was present for ext2 and ext4, and to remove an #ifdef in fs/dax.c.

Ross Zwisler 03e0990fc8 ext2: remove support for DAX PMD faults
DAX PMD support was added via the following commit:

commit e7b1ea2ad6 ("ext2: huge page fault support")

I believe this path to be untested as ext2 doesn't reliably provide block
allocations that are aligned to 2MiB. In my testing I've been unable to
get ext2 to actually fault in a PMD. It always fails with a "pfn
unaligned" message because the sector returned by ext2_get_block() isn't
aligned.

I've tried various settings for the "stride" and "stripe_width" extended
options to mkfs.ext2, without any luck.

Since we can't reliably get PMDs, remove support so that we don't have an
untested code path that we may someday traverse when we happen to get an
aligned block allocation. This should also make 4k DAX faults in ext2 a
bit faster since they will no longer have to call the PMD fault handler
only to get a response of VM_FAULT_FALLBACK.

fs/ext2/inode.c: In function 'ext2_get_block':
include/linux/buffer_head.h:340:16: error: 'bno' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Werror=maybe-uninitialized]

The calling conventions for this function are rather complex, and it's
not surprising that the compiler gets this wrong, I spent a long time
trying to understand how it all fits together myself.

This change to avoid the warning makes sure the compiler sees that we
always set 'bno' pointer whenever we have a positive return code.
The transformation is correct because we always arrive at the 'got_it'
label with a positive count that gets used as the return value, while
any branch to the 'cleanup' label has a negative or zero 'err'.

Deepa Dinamani 02027d42c3 fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME_SEC with current_time() for inode timestamps
CURRENT_TIME_SEC is not y2038 safe. current_time() will
be transitioned to use 64 bit time along with vfs in a
separate patch.
There is no plan to transistion CURRENT_TIME_SEC to use
y2038 safe time interfaces.

current_time() will also be extended to use superblock
range checking parameters when range checking is introduced.

This works because alloc_super() fills in the the s_time_gran
in super block to NSEC_PER_SEC.

Deepa Dinamani 078cd8279e fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestamps
CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it
doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps.
Use current_time() instead.

CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe.

This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions
vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them
y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be
extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all
file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also,
current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be
y2038 safe.

Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used
to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they
share the same time granularity.

Ross Zwisler 6b524995a7 dax: remote unused fault wrappers
Remove the unused wrappers dax_fault() and dax_pmd_fault(). After this
removal, rename __dax_fault() and __dax_pmd_fault() to dax_fault() and
dax_pmd_fault() respectively, and update all callers.

The dax_fault() and dax_pmd_fault() wrappers were initially intended to
capture some filesystem independent functionality around page faults
(calling sb_start_pagefault() & sb_end_pagefault(), updating file mtime
and ctime).

However, the following commits:

   5726b27b09 ("ext2: Add locking for DAX faults")
   ea3d7209ca ("ext4: fix races between page faults and hole punching")

added locking to the ext2 and ext4 filesystems after these common
operations but before __dax_fault() and __dax_pmd_fault() were called.
This means that these wrappers are no longer used, and are unlikely to
be used in the future.

XFS has had locking analogous to what was recently added to ext2 and
ext4 since DAX support was initially introduced by:

   6b698edeee ("xfs: add DAX file operations support")

Carlos Maiolino ff0031d848 ext2: fix filesystem deadlock while reading corrupted xattr block
This bug can be reproducible with fsfuzzer, although, I couldn't reproduce it
100% of my tries, it is quite easily reproducible.

During the deletion of an inode, ext2_xattr_delete_inode() does not check if the
block pointed by EXT2_I(inode)->i_file_acl is a valid data block, this might
lead to a deadlock, when i_file_acl == 1, and the filesystem block size is 1024.

In that situation, ext2_xattr_delete_inode, will load the superblock's buffer
head (instead of a valid i_file_acl block), and then lock that buffer head,
which, ext2_sync_super will also try to lock, making the filesystem deadlock in
the following stack trace:

Fix this by using the same approach ext4 uses to test data blocks validity,
implementing ext2_data_block_valid.

An another possibility when the superblock is very corrupted, is that i_file_acl
is 1, block_count is 1 and first_data_block is 0. For such situations, we might
have i_file_acl pointing to a 'valid' block, but still step over the superblock.
The approach I used was to also test if the superblock is not in the range
described by ext2_data_block_valid() arguments

Linus Torvalds d102a56edb Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull vfs fixes from Al Viro:
 "Followups to the parallel lookup work:

   - update docs

   - restore killability of the places that used to take ->i_mutex
     killably now that we have down_write_killable() merged

   - Additionally, it turns out that I missed a prerequisite for
     security_d_instantiate() stuff - ->getxattr() wasn't the only thing
     that could be called before dentry is attached to inode; with smack
     we needed the same treatment applied to ->setxattr() as well"

* 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs:
  switch ->setxattr() to passing dentry and inode separately
  switch xattr_handler->set() to passing dentry and inode separately
  restore killability of old mutex_lock_killable(&inode->i_mutex) users
  add down_write_killable_nested()
  update D/f/directory-locking

Al Viro 5930122683 switch xattr_handler->set() to passing dentry and inode separately
preparation for similar switch in ->setxattr() (see the next commit for
rationale).

Linus Torvalds 315227f6da DAX error handling for 4.7
- Until now, dax has been disabled if media errors were found on
   any device. This enables the use of DAX in the presence of these
   errors by making all sector-aligned zeroing go through the driver.
 - The driver (already) has the ability to clear errors on writes that
   are sent through the block layer using 'DSMs' defined in ACPI 6.1.

 Other misc changes:

 - When mounting DAX filesystems, check to make sure the partition
   is page aligned. This is a requirement for DAX, and previously, we
   allowed such unaligned mounts to succeed, but subsequent reads/writes
   would fail.

 - Misc/cleanup fixes from Jan that remove unused code from DAX related to
   zeroing, writeback, and some size checks.

Toshi Kani 284854be2b ext2: Add alignment check for DAX mount
When a partition is not aligned by 4KB, mount -o dax succeeds,
but any read/write access to the filesystem fails, except for
metadata update.

Jan Kara 86b0624e42 ext2: Avoid DAX zeroing to corrupt data
Currently ext2 zeroes any data blocks allocated for DAX inode however it
still returns them as BH_New. Thus DAX code zeroes them again in
dax_insert_mapping() which can possibly overwrite the data that has been
already stored to those blocks by a racing dax_io(). Avoid marking
pre-zeroed buffers as new.

Jan Kara 9b6cd5f76d ext2: Fix block zeroing in ext2_get_blocks() for DAX
When zeroing allocated blocks for DAX, we accidentally zeroed only the
first allocated block instead of all of them. So far this problem is
hidden by the fact that page faults always need only a single block and
DAX write code zeroes blocks again. But the zeroing in DAX code is racy
and needs to be removed so fix the zeroing in ext2 to zero all allocated
blocks.
