Tobin C. Harding cbf800d9c7 tools/vm/slabinfo: add sorting info to help menu
Passing more than one sorting option has undefined behaviour.

Add an explicit statement as such to the help menu, this also has the
advantage of highlighting all the sorting options.

Tobin C. Harding 53a83f9766 tools/vm/slabinfo: add option to sort by partial slabs
We would like to get a better view of the level of fragmentation within
the SLUB allocator. Total number of partial slabs is an indicator of
fragmentation.

Add a command line option (-P | --partial) to sort the slab list by total
number of partial slabs.

Tobin C. Harding 1106b205a3 tools/vm/slabinfo: add partial slab listing to -X
We would like to see how fragmented the SLUB allocator is, one window into
fragmentation is the total number of partial slabs.

Currently `slabinfo -X` shows slabs sorted by loss and by size. We can
use this option to also show slabs sorted by number of partial slabs.

Option '-X' can be used in conjunction with '-N' to control the number of
slabs shown e.g. list of top 5 slabs:

	slabinfo -X -N5

Add list of slabs ordered by number of partial slabs to output of
`slabinfo -X`.

Tobin C. Harding d914999689 tools/vm/slabinfo: order command line options
During recent discussion on LKML over SLAB vs SLUB it was suggested by
Jesper that it would be nice to have a tool to view the current
fragmentation of the slab allocators. CC list for this set is taken
from that thread.

For SLUB we have all the information for this already exposed by the
kernel and also we have a userspace tool for displaying this info:

	tools/vm/slabinfo.c

Extend slabinfo to improve the fragmentation information by enabling
sorting of caches by number of partial slabs.

Also add cache list sorted in this manner to the output of `slabinfo -X`.

This patch (of 4):

get_opt() has a spurious character within the option string. Remove it
and reorder the options in alphabetic order so that it is easier to keep
the options correct. Use the same ordering for command help output and
long option handling code.

David Hildenbrand ca215086b1 mm: convert PG_balloon to PG_offline
PG_balloon was introduced to implement page migration/compaction for
pages inflated in virtio-balloon. Nowadays, it is only a marker that a
page is part of virtio-balloon and therefore logically offline.

We also want to make use of this flag in other balloon drivers - for
inflated pages or when onlining a section but keeping some pages offline
(e.g. used right now by XEN and Hyper-V via set_online_page_callback()).

We are going to expose this flag to dump tools like makedumpfile. But
instead of exposing PG_balloon, let's generalize the concept of marking
pages as logically offline, so it can be reused for other purposes later
on.

Rename PG_balloon to PG_offline. This is an indicator that the page is
logically offline, the content stale and that it should not be touched
(e.g. a hypervisor would have to allocate backing storage in order for
the guest to dump an unused page). We can then e.g. exclude such pages
from dumps.

We replace and reuse KPF_BALLOON (23), as this shouldn't really harm
(and for now the semantics stay the same). In following patches, we
will make use of this bit also in other balloon drivers. While at it,
document PGTABLE.

Add a new flag that will read kpagecount for each PFN and print out the
number of times the page is mapped along with the flags in the listing

This information is useful in understanding and optimizing memory usage.
Identifying pages which are not shared allows us to focus on adjusting
the memory layout or access patterns for the sole owning process.
Knowing the number of processes that share a page tells us how many
other times we must make the same adjustments or how many processes to
potentially disable.

Martin Kelly 7ed1c1901f tools: fix cross-compile var clobbering
Currently a number of Makefiles break when used with toolchains that
pass extra flags in CC and other cross-compile related variables (such
as --sysroot).

Thus we get this error when we use a toolchain that puts --sysroot in
the CC var:

  ~/src/linux/tools$ make iio
  [snip]
iio_event_monitor.c:18:10: fatal error: unistd.h: No such file or directory
    #include <unistd.h>
             ^~~~~~~~~~

This occurs because we clobber several env vars related to
cross-compiling with lines like this:

  CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc

Although this will point to a valid cross-compiler, we lose any extra
flags that might exist in the CC variable, which can break toolchains
that rely on them (for example, those that use --sysroot).

This easily shows up using a Yocto SDK:

  $ . [snip]/sdk/environment-setup-cortexa8hf-neon-poky-linux-gnueabi

  $ echo $CC
  arm-poky-linux-gnueabi-gcc -march=armv7-a -mfpu=neon -mfloat-abi=hard
  -mcpu=cortex-a8
  --sysroot=[snip]/sdk/sysroots/cortexa8hf-neon-poky-linux-gnueabi

  $ echo $CROSS_COMPILE
  arm-poky-linux-gnueabi-

  $ echo ${CROSS_COMPILE}gcc
  krm-poky-linux-gnueabi-gcc

Although arm-poky-linux-gnueabi-gcc is a cross-compiler, we've lost the
--sysroot and other flags that enable us to find the right libraries to
link against, so we can't find unistd.h and other libraries and headers.
Normally with the --sysroot flag we would find unistd.h in the sdk
directory in the sysroot:

  $ find [snip]/sdk/sysroots -path '*/usr/include/unistd.h'
  [snip]/sdk/sysroots/cortexa8hf-neon-poky-linux-gnueabi/usr/include/unistd.h

The perf Makefile adds CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc if and only if CC is not
already set, and it compiles correctly with the above toolchain.

So, generalize the logic that perf uses in the common Makefile and
remove the manual CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc lines from each Makefile.

Note that this patch does not fix cross-compile for all the tools (some

Yang Shi 7ad3f188aa tools: slabinfo: add "-U" option to show unreclaimable slabs only
Patch series "oom: capture unreclaimable slab info in oom message", v10.

Recently we ran into a oom issue, kernel panic due to no killable
process. The dmesg shows huge unreclaimable slabs used almost 100%
memory, but kdump doesn't capture vmcore due to some reason.

So, it may sound better to capture unreclaimable slab info in oom
message when kernel panic to aid trouble shooting and cover the corner
case. Since kernel already panic, so capturing more information sounds
worthy and doesn't bother normal oom killer.

With the patchset, tools/vm/slabinfo has a new option, "-U", to show
unreclaimable slab only.

And, oom will print all non zero (num_objs * size != 0) unreclaimable
slabs in oom killer message.

This patch (of 3):

Add "-U" option to show unreclaimable slabs only.

"-U" and "-S" together can tell us what unreclaimable slabs use the most
memory to help debug huge unreclaimable slabs issue.

Greg Kroah-Hartman b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 11139

and resulted in the first patch in this series.

If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930

and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1

and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Naoya Horiguchi d9b2ddf807 tools/vm/page-types.c: avoid memset() in walk_pfn() when count == 1
I found that page-types is very slow and my testing shows many timeout
errors. Here's an example with a simple program allocating 1000 thps.

  ...
  real 0m17.201s

Most of time is spent in memset(). Currently memset() clears over whole
buffer for every walk_pfn() call, which is inefficient when walk_pfn()
is called from walk_vma(), because in that case walk_pfn() is called for
each pfn. So this patch limits the zero initialization only for the
first element.

  $ time ./page-types.patched -p $(pgrep -f test_alloc)

The last patch in the series addresses Linus' comment from
http://marc.info/?l=linux-mm&m=144148518703321&w=2

(well, it's been some time. sorry.)

gnuplot script takes the slabinfo records file, where every record is a `slabinfo -X'
output. So the basic workflow is, for example, as follows:

        while [ 1 ]; do slabinfo -X -N 2 >> stats; sleep 1; done
        ^C
        slabinfo-gnuplot.sh stats

The last command will produce 3 png files (and 3 stats files)
-- graph of slabinfo totals
-- graph of slabs by size
-- graph of slabs by loss

It's also possible to select a range of records for plotting (a range of collected
slabinfo outputs) via `-r 10,100` (for example); and compare totals from several
measurements (to visially compare slabs behaviour (10,50 range)) using
pre-parsed totals files:
        slabinfo-gnuplot.sh -r 10,50 -t stats-totals1 .. stats-totals2

This also, technically, supports ktest. Upload new slabinfo to target,
collect the stats and give the resulting stats file to slabinfo-gnuplot

This patch (of 8):

Use getopt constants in `struct option' ->has_arg instead of numerical
representations.

Konstantin Khlebnikov 77bb499bb6 pagemap: add mmap-exclusive bit for marking pages mapped only here
This patch sets bit 56 in pagemap if this page is mapped only once. It
allows to detect exclusively used pages without exposing PFN:

present file exclusive state
0 0 0 non-present
1 1 0 file page mapped somewhere else
1 1 1 file page mapped only here
1 0 0 anon non-CoWed page (shared with parent/child)
1 0 1 anon CoWed page (or never forked)

CoWed pages in (MAP_FILE | MAP_PRIVATE) areas are anon in this context.

MMap-exclusive bit doesn't reflect potential page-sharing via swapcache:
page could be mapped once but has several swap-ptes which point to it.
Application could detect that by swap bit in pagemap entry and touch that
pte via /proc/pid/mem to get real information.

Joonsoo Kim 48c96a3685 mm/page_owner: keep track of page owners
This is the page owner tracking code which is introduced so far ago. It
is resident on Andrew's tree, though, nobody tried to upstream so it
remain as is. Our company uses this feature actively to debug memory leak
or to find a memory hogger so I decide to upstream this feature.

This functionality help us to know who allocates the page. When
allocating a page, we store some information about allocation in extra
memory. Later, if we need to know status of all pages, we can get and
analyze it from this stored information.

In previous version of this feature, extra memory is statically defined in
struct page, but, in this version, extra memory is allocated outside of
struct page. It enables us to turn on/off this feature at boottime
without considerable memory waste.

Although we already have tracepoint for tracing page allocation/free,
using it to analyze page owner is rather complex. We need to enlarge the
trace buffer for preventing overlapping until userspace program launched.
And, launched program continually dump out the trace buffer for later
analysis and it would change system behaviour with more possibility rather
than just keeping it in memory, so bad for debug.

Moreover, we can use page_owner feature further for various purposes. For
example, we can use it for fragmentation statistics implemented in this
patch. And, I also plan to implement some CMA failure debugging feature
using this interface.

I'd like to give the credit for all developers contributed this feature,
but, it's not easy because I don't know exact history. Sorry about that.

Konstantin Khlebnikov 09316c09dd mm/balloon_compaction: add vmstat counters and kpageflags bit

pages.

All generic balloon code now gathered under option CONFIG_MEMORY_BALLOON.
It should be selected by ballooning driver which wants use this feature.

Konstantin Khlebnikov 1d46598b79 tools/vm/page-types.c: catch sigbus if raced with truncate
Recently added page-cache dumping is known to be a little bit racy.
But after race with truncate it just dies due to unhandled SIGBUS
when it tries to poke pages beyond the new end of file.
This patch adds handler for SIGBUS which skips the rest of the file.

Konstantin Khlebnikov 65a6a4105f tools/vm/page-types.c: page-cache sniffing feature
After this patch 'page-types' can walk over a file's mappings and
analyze populated page cache pages mostly without disturbing its state.

It maps chunk of file, marks VMA as MADV_RANDOM to turn off readahead,
pokes VMA via mincore() to determine cached pages, triggers page-fault
only for them, and finally gathers information via pagemap/kpageflags.
Before unmap it marks VMA as MADV_SEQUENTIAL for ignoring reference
bits.

usage: page-types -f <path>

If <path> is directory it will analyse all files in all subdirectories.

Symlinks are not followed as well as mount points. Hardlinks aren't
handled, they'll be dumped as many times as they are found. Recursive
walk brings all dentries into dcache and populates page cache of
block-devices aka 'Buffers'.

Probably it's worth to add ioctl for dumping file page cache as array of
PFNs as a replacement for this hackish juggling with
mmap/madvise/mincore/pagemap. Also recursive walk could be replaced
with dumping cached inodes via some ioctl or debugfs interface followed
by openning them via open_by_handle_at, this would fix hardlinks
handling and unneeded population of dcache and buffers. This interface
might be used as data source for constructing readahead plans and for
background optimizations of actively used files.

collateral changes:
+ fix 64-bit LFS: define _FILE_OFFSET_BITS instead of _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE
+ replace lseek + read with single pread
+ make show_page_range() reusable after flush

usage example:

  ~/src/linux/tools/vm$ sudo ./page-types -L -f page-types
  foffset offset flags
  page-types Inode: 2229277 Size: 89065 (22 pages)

Borislav Petkov 553873e1df tools/: Convert to new topic libraries
Move debugfs.* to api/fs/. We have a common tools/lib/api/ place where
the Makefile lives and then we place the headers in subdirs.

For example, all the fs-related stuff goes to tools/lib/api/fs/ from
which we get libapikfs.a (acme got almost the naming he wanted :-)) and
we link it into the tools which need it - in this case perf and
tools/vm/page-types.

acme:

"Looking at the implementation, I think some tools can even link
directly to the .o files, avoiding the .a file altogether.

But that is just an optimization/finer granularity tools/lib/
cherrypicking that toolers can make use of."

Fixup documentation cleaning target while at it.
