Changbin Du 6210b6402f kernel-hacking: group sysrq/kgdb/ubsan into 'Generic Kernel Debugging Instruments'
Patch series "hacking: make 'kernel hacking' menu better structurized", v3.

This series is a trivial improvment for the layout of 'kernel hacking'
configuration menu. Now we have many items in it which makes takes a
little time to look up them since they are not well structurized yet.

Early discussion is here:

This patch (of 9):

Group generic kernel debugging instruments sysrq/kgdb/ubsan together
into a new submenu.

Masahiro Yamada 7ecaf069da kbuild: move headers_check rule to usr/include/Makefile
Currently, some sanity checks for uapi headers are done by
scripts/headers_check.pl, which is wired up to the 'headers_check'
target in the top Makefile.

It is true compiling headers has better test coverage, but there
are still several headers excluded from the compile test. I like
to keep headers_check.pl for a while, but we can delete a lot of

David Gow ea2dd7c087 lib/list-test: add a test for the 'list' doubly linked list
Add a KUnit test for the kernel doubly linked list implementation in
include/linux/list.h

Each test case (list_test_x) is focused on testing the behaviour of the
list function/macro 'x'. None of the tests pass invalid lists to these
macros, and so should behave identically with DEBUG_LIST enabled and
disabled.

Note that, at present, it only tests the list_ types (not the
singly-linked hlist_), and does not yet test all of the
list_for_each_entry* macros (and some related things like
list_prepare_entry).

Ignoring checkpatch.pl spurious errors related to its handling of for_each
and other list macros. checkpatch.pl expects anything with for_each in its
name to be a loop and expects that the open brace is placed on the same
line as for a for loop. In this case, test case naming scheme includes
name of the macro it is testing, which results in the spurious errors.

Rasmus Villemoes 57f5677e53 printf: add support for printing symbolic error names
It has been suggested several times to extend vsnprintf() to be able
to convert the numeric value of ENOSPC to print "ENOSPC". This
implements that as a %p extension: With %pe, one can do

  if (IS_ERR(foo)) {
    pr_err("Sorry, can't do that: %pe\n", foo);
    return PTR_ERR(foo);
  }

instead of what is seen in quite a few places in the kernel:

  if (IS_ERR(foo)) {
    pr_err("Sorry, can't do that: %ld\n", PTR_ERR(foo));
    return PTR_ERR(foo);
  }

If the value passed to %pe is an ERR_PTR, but the library function
errname() added here doesn't know about the value, the value is simply
printed in decimal. If the value passed to %pe is not an ERR_PTR, we
treat it as an ordinary %p and thus print the hashed value (passing
non-ERR_PTR values to %pe indicates a bug in the caller, but we can't
do much about that).

With my embedded hat on, and because it's not very invasive to do,
I've made it possible to remove this. The errname() function and
associated lookup tables take up about 3K. For most, that's probably
quite acceptable and a price worth paying for more readable
dmesg (once this starts getting used), while for those that disable
printk() it's of very little use - I don't see a
procfs/sysfs/seq_printf() file reasonably making use of this - and
they clearly want to squeeze vmlinux as much as possible. Hence the
default y if PRINTK.

The symbols to include have been found by massaging the output of

find arch include -iname 'errno*.h' | xargs grep -E 'define\s*E'

In the cases where some common aliasing exists
(e.g. EAGAIN=EWOULDBLOCK on all platforms, EDEADLOCK=EDEADLK on most),
I've moved the more popular one (in terms of 'git grep -w Efoo | wc)
to the bottom so that one takes precedence.

Masahiro Yamada ac7c3e4ff4 compiler: enable CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING forcibly
Commit 9012d01166 ("compiler: allow all arches to enable
CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING") allowed all architectures to enable this
option. A couple of build errors were reported by randconfig, but all of
them have been ironed out.

Towards the goal of removing CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING entirely (and it
will simplify the 'inline' macro in compiler_types.h), this commit changes
it to always-on option. Going forward, the compiler will always be
allowed to not inline functions marked 'inline'.

This is not a problem for x86 since it has been long used by
arch/x86/configs/{x86_64,i386}_defconfig.

I am keeping the config option just in case any problem crops up for other
architectures.

The code clean-up will be done after confirming this is solid.

Qian Cai c59180ae3e mm/kmemleak: increase the max mem pool to 1M
There are some machines with slow disk and fast CPUs. When they are under
memory pressure, it could take a long time to swap before the OOM kicks in
to free up some memory. As the results, it needs a large mem pool for
kmemleak or suffering from higher chance of a kmemleak metadata allocation
failure. 524288 proves to be the good number for all architectures here.
Increase the upper bound to 1M to leave some room for the future.

Catalin Marinas c566586818 mm: kmemleak: use the memory pool for early allocations
Currently kmemleak uses a static early_log buffer to trace all memory
allocation/freeing before the slab allocator is initialised. Such early
log is replayed during kmemleak_init() to properly initialise the kmemleak
metadata for objects allocated up that point. With a memory pool that
does not rely on the slab allocator, it is possible to skip this early log
entirely.

In order to remove the early logging, consider kmemleak_enabled == 1 by
default while the kmem_cache availability is checked directly on the
object_cache and scan_area_cache variables. The RCU callback is only
invoked after object_cache has been initialised as we wouldn't have any
concurrent list traversal before this.

In order to reduce the number of callbacks before kmemleak is fully
initialised, move the kmemleak_init() call to mm_init().

Nicolas Boichat b751c52bb5 kmemleak: increase DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_EARLY_LOG_SIZE default to 16K
The current default value (400) is too low on many systems (e.g. some
ARM64 platform takes up 1000+ entries).

syzbot uses 16000 as default value, and has proved to be enough on beefy
configurations, so let's pick that value.

This consumes more RAM on boot (each entry is 160 bytes, so in total
~2.5MB of RAM), but the memory would later be freed (early_log is
__initdata).

Masahiro Yamada efd9763d88 module: move CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS to the sub-menu of MODULES
When CONFIG_MODULES is disabled, CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS is pointless,
thus it should be invisible.

Instead of adding "depends on MODULES", I moved it to the sub-menu
"Enable loadable module support", which is a better fit. I put it
close to TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS because it depends on !UNUSED_SYMBOLS.

Masahiro Yamada b7dca6dd1e kbuild: create *.mod with full directory path and remove MODVERDIR
While descending directories, Kbuild produces objects for modules,
but do not link final *.ko files; it is done in the modpost.

To keep track of modules, Kbuild creates a *.mod file in $(MODVERDIR)
for every module it is building. Some post-processing steps read the
necessary information from *.mod files. This avoids descending into
directories again. This mechanism was introduced in 2003 or so.

Later, commit 551559e13a ("kbuild: implement modules.order") added
modules.order. So, we can simply read it out to know all the modules
with directory paths. This is easier than parsing the first line of
*.mod files.

$(MODVERDIR) has a flat directory structure, that is, *.mod files
are named only with base names. This is based on the assumption that
the module name is unique across the tree. This assumption is really
fragile.

Stephen Rothwell reported a race condition caused by a module name
conflict:

  https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/5/13/991

In parallel building, two different threads could write to the same
$(MODVERDIR)/*.mod simultaneously.

Non-unique module names are the source of all kind of troubles, hence
commit 3a48a91901 ("kbuild: check uniqueness of module names")
introduced a new checker script.

However, it is still fragile in the build system point of view because
this race happens before scripts/modules-check.sh is invoked. If it
happens again, the modpost will emit unclear error messages.

To fix this issue completely, create *.mod with full directory path
so that two threads never attempt to write to the same file.

$(MODVERDIR) is no longer needed.

Since modules with directory paths are listed in modules.order, Kbuild
is still able to find *.mod files without additional descending.

I also killed cmd_secanalysis; scripts/mod/sumversion.c computes MD4 hash
for modules with MODULE_VERSION(). When CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y,
it occurs not only in the modpost stage, but also during directory
descending, where sumversion.c may parse stale *.mod files. It would emit
'No such file or directory' warning when an object consisting a module is
renamed, or when a single-obj module is turned into a multi-obj module or
vice versa.

Mauro Carvalho Chehab 387b14684f docs: locking: convert docs to ReST and rename to *.rst
Convert the locking documents to ReST and add them to the
kernel development book where it belongs.

Most of the stuff here is just to make Sphinx to properly
parse the text file, as they're already in good shape,
not requiring massive changes in order to be parsed.

The conversion is actually:
  - add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs;
  - fix tables markups;
  - add some lists markups;
  - mark literal blocks;
  - adjust title markups.

At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to
the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings.

Linus Torvalds e9a83bd232 It's been a relatively busy cycle for docs:
- A fair pile of RST conversions, many from Mauro. These create more
than the usual number of simple but annoying merge conflicts with other
trees, unfortunately. He has a lot more of these waiting on the wings
that, I think, will go to you directly later on.

  - A new document on how to use merges and rebases in kernel repos, and one
    on Spectre vulnerabilities.

  - Various improvements to the build system, including automatic markup of
function() references because some people, for reasons I will never
understand, were of the opinion that :c:func:``function()`` is
unattractive and not fun to type.

  - We now recommend using sphinx 1.7, but still support back to 1.4.

  - Lots of smaller improvements, warning fixes, typo fixes, etc.

Linus Torvalds e192832869 Merge branch 'locking-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull locking updates from Ingo Molnar:
"The main changes in this cycle are:

   - rwsem scalability improvements, phase #2, by Waiman Long, which are
     rather impressive:

       "On a 2-socket 40-core 80-thread Skylake system with 40 reader
and writer locking threads, the min/mean/max locking operations
done in a 5-second testing window before the patchset were:

         40 readers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 1,807/1,808/1,810
         40 writers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 1,807/50,344/151,255

        After the patchset, they became:

         40 readers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 30,057/31,359/32,741
         40 writers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 94,466/95,845/97,098"

There's a lot of changes to the locking implementation that makes
it similar to qrwlock, including owner handoff for more fair
     locking.

Another microbenchmark shows how across the spectrum the
     improvements are:

"With a locking microbenchmark running on 5.1 based kernel, the
total locking rates (in kops/s) on a 2-socket Skylake system
with equal numbers of readers and writers (mixed) before and
        after this patchset were:

        # of Threads Before Patch After Patch
        ------------ ------------ -----------
             2 2,618 4,193
             4 1,202 3,726
             8 802 3,622
            16 729 3,359
            32 319 2,826
            64 102 2,744"

The changes are extensive and the patch-set has been through
several iterations addressing various locking workloads. There
might be more regressions, but unless they are pathological I
believe we want to use this new implementation as the baseline
     going forward.

   - jump-label optimizations by Daniel Bristot de Oliveira: the primary
motivation was to remove IPI disturbance of isolated RT-workload
CPUs, which resulted in the implementation of batched jump-label
updates. Beyond the improvement of the real-time characteristics
kernel, in one test this patchset improved static key update
overhead from 57 msecs to just 1.4 msecs - which is a nice speedup
     as well.

   - atomic64_t cross-arch type cleanups by Mark Rutland: over the last
~10 years of atomic64_t existence the various types used by the
APIs only had to be self-consistent within each architecture -
which means they became wildly inconsistent across architectures.
Mark puts and end to this by reworking all the atomic64
implementations to use 's64' as the base type for atomic64_t, and
to ensure that this type is consistently used for parameters and
return values in the API, avoiding further problems in this area.

   - A large set of small improvements to lockdep by Yuyang Du: type
cleanups, output cleanups, function return type and othr cleanups
     all around the place.

   - A set of percpu ops cleanups and fixes by Peter Zijlstra.

   - Misc other changes - please see the Git log for more details"

Ferdinand Blomqvist 4b4f3accd8 rslib: Add tests for the encoder and decoder
A Reed-Solomon code with minimum distance d can correct any error and
erasure pattern that satisfies 2 * #error + #erasures < d. If the
error correction capacity is exceeded, then correct decoding cannot be
guaranteed. The decoder must, however, return a valid codeword or report
failure.

There are two main tests:

- Check for correct behaviour up to the error correction capacity
- Check for correct behaviour beyond error corrupted capacity

Both tests are simple:

1. Generate random data
2. Encode data with the chosen code
3. Add errors and erasures to data
4. Decode the corrupted word
5. Check for correct behaviour

When testing up to capacity we test for:

- Correct decoding
- Correct return value (i.e. the number of corrected symbols)
- That the returned error positions are correct

There are two kinds of erasures; the erased symbol can be corrupted or
not. When counting the number of corrected symbols, erasures without
symbol corruption should not be counted. Similarly, the returned error
positions should only include positions where a correction is necessary.

We run the up to capacity tests for three different interfaces of
decode_rs:

- Use the correction buffers
- Use the correction buffers with syndromes provided by the caller
- Error correction in place (does not check the error positions)

When testing beyond capacity test for silent failures. A silent failure is
when the decoder returns success but the returned word is not a valid
codeword.

There are a couple of options for the tests:

- Verbosity.

- Whether to test for correct behaviour beyond capacity. Default is to
  test beyond capacity.

- Whether to allow erasures without symbol corruption. Defaults to yes.

Note that the tests take a couple of minutes to complete.

Waiman Long c71fd893f6 locking/rwsem: Make owner available even if !CONFIG_RWSEM_SPIN_ON_OWNER
The owner field in the rw_semaphore structure is used primarily for
optimistic spinning. However, identifying the rwsem owner can also be
helpful in debugging as well as tracing locking related issues when
analyzing crash dump. The owner field may also store state information
that can be important to the operation of the rwsem.

So the owner field is now made a permanent member of the rw_semaphore
structure irrespective of CONFIG_RWSEM_SPIN_ON_OWNER.

Masahiro Yamada 59b2bd05f5 kbuild: add 'headers' target to build up uapi headers in usr/include
In Linux build system, build targets and installation targets are
separated.

Examples are:

 - 'make vmlinux' -> 'make install'
 - 'make modules' -> 'make modules_install'
 - 'make dtbs'    -> 'make dtbs_install'
 - 'make vdso'    -> 'make vdso_install'

The intention is to run the build targets under the normal privilege,
then the installation targets under the root privilege since we need
the write permission to the system directories.

We have 'make headers_install' but the corresponding 'make headers'
stage does not exist. The purpose of headers_install is to provide
the kernel interface to C library. So, nobody would try to install
headers to /usr/include directly.

If 'sudo make INSTALL_HDR_PATH=/usr/include headers_install' were run,
some build artifacts in the kernel tree would be owned by root because
some of uapi headers are generated by 'uapi-asm-generic', 'archheaders'
targets.

Anyway, I believe it makes sense to split the header installation into
two stages.

 [1] 'make headers'
Process headers in uapi directories by scripts/headers_install.sh
    and copy them to usr/include

 [2] 'make headers_install'
    Copy '*.h' verbatim from usr/include to $(INSTALL_HDR_PATH)/include

For the backward compatibility, 'headers_install' depends on 'headers'.

Some samples expect uapi headers in usr/include. So, the 'headers'
target is useful to build up them in the fixed location usr/include
irrespective of INSTALL_HDR_PATH.

Another benefit is to stop polluting the final destination with the
time-stamp files '.install' and '.check'. Maybe you can see them in
your toolchains.

Lastly, my main motivation is to prepare for compile-testing uapi
headers. To build something, we have to save an object and .*.cmd
somewhere. The usr/include/ will be the work directory for that.

Masahiro Yamada e949f4c2d6 kbuild: add CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL and loosen the dependency of samples
Commit 5318321d36 ("samples: disable CONFIG_SAMPLES for UML") used
a big hammer to fix the build errors under the samples/ directory.
Only some samples actually include uapi headers from usr/include.

Introduce CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL since 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' is
clearer than 'depends on !UML'. If this option is enabled, uapi headers
are installed before starting directory descending.

I added 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' to per-sample CONFIG options.
This allows UML to compile some samples.

Qian Cai 7878c231da slab: remove /proc/slab_allocators
It turned out that DEBUG_SLAB_LEAK is still broken even after recent
recue efforts that when there is a large number of objects like
kmemleak_object which is normal on a debug kernel,

  # grep kmemleak /proc/slabinfo
  kmemleak_object 2243606 3436210 ...

reading /proc/slab_allocators could easily loop forever while processing
the kmemleak_object cache and any additional freeing or allocating
objects will trigger a reprocessing. To make a situation worse,
soft-lockups could easily happen in this sitatuion which will call
printk() to allocate more kmemleak objects to guarantee an infinite
loop.

Also, since it seems no one had noticed when it was totally broken
more than 2-year ago - see the commit fcf88917dd ("slab: fix a crash
by reading /proc/slab_allocators"), probably nobody cares about it
anymore due to the decline of the SLAB. Just remove it entirely.

Sinan Kaya c66d7a27b7 init: introduce DEBUG_MISC option
Patch series "init: Do not select DEBUG_KERNEL by default", v5.

CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL has been designed to just enable Kconfig options.
Kernel code generatoin should not depend on CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL.

Proposed alternative plan: let's add a new symbol, something like
DEBUG_MISC ("Miscellaneous debug code that should be under a more
specific debug option but isn't"), make it depend on DEBUG_KERNEL and be
"default DEBUG_KERNEL" but allow itself to be turned off, and then
mechanically change the small handful of "#ifdef CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL" to
"#ifdef CONFIG_DEBUG_MISC".

This patch (of 5):

Masahiro Yamada 9012d01166 compiler: allow all arches to enable CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING
Commit 60a3cdd063 ("x86: add optimized inlining") introduced
CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING, but it has been available only for x86.

The idea is obviously arch-agnostic. This commit moves the config entry
from arch/x86/Kconfig.debug to lib/Kconfig.debug so that all
architectures can benefit from it.

This can make a huge difference in kernel image size especially when
CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE is enabled.

For example, I got 3.5% smaller arm64 kernel for v5.1-rc1.

  dec file
  18983424 arch/arm64/boot/Image.before
  18321920 arch/arm64/boot/Image.after

This also slightly improves the "Kernel hacking" Kconfig menu as
e61aca5158 ("Merge branch 'kconfig-diet' from Dave Hansen') suggested;
this config option would be a good fit in the "compiler option" menu.

The help text for CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_KCOV is stale, and describes the
feature as being enabled only for x86_64, when it is now enabled for

for ARCH_HAS_FORTIFY_SOURCE, better describing when an architecture

Christoph Hellwig 72deb455b5 block: remove CONFIG_LBDAF
Currently support for 64-bit sector_t and blkcnt_t is optional on 32-bit
architectures. These types are required to support block device and/or
file sizes larger than 2 TiB, and have generally defaulted to on for
a long time. Enabling the option only increases the i386 tinyconfig
size by 145 bytes, and many data structures already always use
64-bit values for their in-core and on-disk data structures anyway,
so there should not be a large change in dynamic memory usage either.

Dropping this option removes a somewhat weird non-default config that
has cause various bugs or compiler warnings when actually used.

Andrii Nakryiko e83b9f5544 kbuild: add ability to generate BTF type info for vmlinux
This patch adds new config option to trigger generation of BTF type
information from DWARF debuginfo for vmlinux and kernel modules through
pahole, which in turn relies on libbpf for btf_dedup() algorithm.

The intent is to record compact type information of all types used
inside kernel, including all the structs/unions/typedefs/etc. This
enables BPF's compile-once-run-everywhere ([0]) approach, in which
tracing programs that are inspecting kernel's internal data (e.g.,
struct task_struct) can be compiled on a system running some kernel
version, but would be possible to run on other kernel versions (and
configurations) without recompilation, even if the layout of structs
changed and/or some of the fields were added, removed, or renamed.

This is only possible if BPF loader can get kernel type info to adjust
all the offsets correctly. This patch is a first time in this direction,
making sure that BTF type info is part of Linux kernel image in
non-loadable ELF section.

BTF deduplication ([1]) algorithm typically provides 100x savings
compared to DWARF data, so resulting .BTF section is not big as is
typically about 2MB in size.

Linus Torvalds 45763bf4bc Char/Misc driver patches for 5.1-rc1
Here is the big char/misc driver patch pull request for 5.1-rc1.

The largest thing by far is the new habanalabs driver for their AI
accelerator chip. For now it is in the drivers/misc directory but will
probably move to a new directory soon along with other drivers of this
 type.

Other than that, just the usual set of individual driver updates and
fixes. There's an "odd" merge in here from the DRM tree that they asked
me to do as the MEI driver is starting to interact with the i915 driver,
and it needed some coordination. All of those patches have been
properly acked by the relevant subsystem maintainers.

All of these have been in linux-next with no reported issues, most for
 quite some time.

Uladzislau Rezki (Sony) 3f21a6b7ef vmalloc: add test driver to analyse vmalloc allocator
This adds a new kernel module for analysis of vmalloc allocator. It is
only enabled as a module. There are two main reasons this module should
be used for: performance evaluation and stressing of vmalloc subsystem.

It consists of several test cases. As of now there are 8. The module
has five parameters we can specify to change its the behaviour.

1) run_test_mask - set of tests to be run

id: 1, name: fix_size_alloc_test
id: 2, name: full_fit_alloc_test
id: 4, name: long_busy_list_alloc_test
id: 8, name: random_size_alloc_test
id: 16, name: fix_align_alloc_test
id: 32, name: random_size_align_alloc_test
id: 64, name: align_shift_alloc_test
id: 128, name: pcpu_alloc_test

By default all tests are in run test mask. If you want to select some
specific tests it is possible to pass the mask. For example for first,
second and fourth tests we go 11 value.

2) test_repeat_count - how many times each test should be repeated
By default it is one time per test. It is possible to pass any number.
As high the value is the test duration gets increased.

3) test_loop_count - internal test loop counter. By default it is set
to 1000000.

4) single_cpu_test - use one CPU to run the tests
By default this parameter is set to false. It means that all online
CPUs execute tests. By setting it to 1, the tests are executed by
first online CPU only.

5) sequential_test_order - run tests in sequential order
By default this parameter is set to false. It means that before running
tests the order is shuffled. It is possible to make it sequential, just
set it to 1.

Performance analysis:
In order to evaluate performance of vmalloc allocations, usually it
makes sense to use only one CPU that runs tests, use sequential order,
number of repeat tests can be different as well as set of test mask.

For example if we want to run all tests, to use one CPU and repeat each
test 3 times. Insert the module passing following parameters:

single_cpu_test=1 sequential_test_order=1 test_repeat_count=3

with following output:

<snip>
Summary: fix_size_alloc_test passed: 3 failed: 0 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 901177 usec
Summary: full_fit_alloc_test passed: 3 failed: 0 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 1039341 usec
Summary: long_busy_list_alloc_test passed: 3 failed: 0 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 11775763 usec
Summary: random_size_alloc_test passed 3: failed: 0 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 6081992 usec
Summary: fix_align_alloc_test passed: 3 failed: 0 repeat: 3, loops: 1000000 avg: 2003712 usec
Summary: random_size_align_alloc_test passed: 3 failed: 0 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 2895689 usec
Summary: align_shift_alloc_test passed: 0 failed: 3 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 573 usec
Summary: pcpu_alloc_test passed: 3 failed: 0 repeat: 3 loops: 1000000 avg: 95802 usec
All test took CPU0=192945605995 cycles
<snip>

The align_shift_alloc_test is expected to be failed.

Stressing:
In order to stress the vmalloc subsystem we run all available test cases
on all available CPUs simultaneously. In order to prevent constant behaviour
pattern, the test cases array is shuffled by default to randomize the order
of test execution.

For example if we want to run all tests(default), use all online CPUs(default)
with shuffled order(default) and to repeat each test 30 times. The command
would be like:

modprobe vmalloc_test test_repeat_count=30

Expected results are the system is alive, there are no any BUG_ONs or Kernel
Panics the tests are completed, no memory leaks.

Andrey Ryabinin 7771bdbbfd kasan: remove use after scope bugs detection.
Use after scope bugs detector seems to be almost entirely useless for
the linux kernel. It exists over two years, but I've seen only one
valid bug so far [1]. And the bug was fixed before it has been
reported. There were some other use-after-scope reports, but they were
false-positives due to different reasons like incompatibility with
structleak plugin.

This feature significantly increases stack usage, especially with GCC <
9 version, and causes a 32K stack overflow. It probably adds
performance penalty too.

Given all that, let's remove use-after-scope detector entirely.

While preparing this patch I've noticed that we mistakenly enable
use-after-scope detection for clang compiler regardless of
CONFIG_KASAN_EXTRA setting. This is also fixed now.

Kees Cook 50ceaa95ea lib: Introduce test_stackinit module
Adds test for stack initialization coverage. We have several build options
that control the level of stack variable initialization. This test lets us
visualize which options cover which cases, and provide tests for some of
the pathological padding conditions the compiler will sometimes fail to

CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_SPLIT and CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_DWARF4 enable extra

since Makefile may silently turn them off.

The actual behavior will match to the kernel configuration by

Masahiro Yamada 8636a1f967 treewide: surround Kconfig file paths with double quotes
The Kconfig lexer supports special characters such as '.' and '/' in
the parameter context. In my understanding, the reason is just to
support bare file paths in the source statement.

I do not see a good reason to complicate Kconfig for the room of
ambiguity.

The majority of code already surrounds file paths with double quotes,
and it makes sense since file paths are constant string literals.

Make it treewide consistent now.

Tetsuo Handa 15ff2069cb printk: Add caller information to printk() output.
Sometimes we want to print a series of printk() messages to consoles
without being disturbed by concurrent printk() from interrupts and/or
other threads. But we can't enforce printk() callers to use their local
buffers because we need to ask them to make too much changes. Also, even
buffering up to one line inside printk() might cause failing to emit
an important clue under critical situation.

Therefore, instead of trying to help buffering, let's try to help
reconstructing messages by saving caller information as of calling
log_store() and adding it as "[T$thread_id]" or "[C$processor_id]"
upon printing to consoles.

Some examples for console output:

  [ 1.222773][ T1] x86: Booting SMP configuration:
  [ 2.779635][ T1] pci 0000:00:01.0: PCI bridge to [bus 01]
  [ 5.069193][ T268] Fusion MPT base driver 3.04.20
  [ 9.316504][ C2] random: fast init done
  [ 13.413336][ T3355] Initialized host personality

Some examples for /dev/kmsg output:

  6,496,1222773,-,caller=T1;x86: Booting SMP configuration:
  6,968,2779635,-,caller=T1;pci 0000:00:01.0: PCI bridge to [bus 01]
   SUBSYSTEM=pci
   DEVICE=+pci:0000:00:01.0
  6,1353,5069193,-,caller=T268;Fusion MPT base driver 3.04.20
  5,1526,9316504,-,caller=C2;random: fast init done
  6,1575,13413336,-,caller=T3355;Initialized host personality

Note that this patch changes max length of messages which can be printed
by printk() or written to /dev/kmsg interface from 992 bytes to 976 bytes,
based on an assumption that userspace won't try to write messages hitting
that border line to /dev/kmsg interface.

Linus Torvalds dad4f140ed Merge branch 'xarray' of git://git.infradead.org/users/willy/linux-dax
Pull XArray conversion from Matthew Wilcox:
"The XArray provides an improved interface to the radix tree data
structure, providing locking as part of the API, specifying GFP flags
at allocation time, eliminating preloading, less re-walking the tree,
more efficient iterations and not exposing RCU-protected pointers to
  its users.

  This patch set

   1. Introduces the XArray implementation

   2. Converts the pagecache to use it

   3. Converts memremap to use it

The page cache is the most complex and important user of the radix
tree, so converting it was most important. Converting the memremap
code removes the only other user of the multiorder code, which allows
us to remove the radix tree code that supported it.

I have 40+ followup patches to convert many other users of the radix
tree over to the XArray, but I'd like to get this part in first. The
other conversions haven't been in linux-next and aren't suitable for
applying yet, but you can see them in the xarray-conv branch if you're

Matthew Wilcox ad3d6c7263 xarray: Add XArray load operation
The xa_load function brings with it a lot of infrastructure; xa_empty(),
xa_is_err(), and large chunks of the XArray advanced API that are used
to implement xa_load.

As the test-suite demonstrates, it is possible to use the XArray functions
on a radix tree. The radix tree functions depend on the GFP flags being
stored in the root of the tree, so it's not possible to use the radix
tree functions on an XArray.

Alexander Shishkin ce76d938dd lib: Add memcat_p(): paste 2 pointer arrays together
This adds a helper to paste 2 pointer arrays together, useful for merging
various types of attribute arrays. There are a few places in the kernel
tree where this is open coded, and I just added one more in the STM class.

The naming is inspired by memset_p() and memcat(), and partial credit for
it goes to Andy Shevchenko.

This patch adds the function wrapped in a type-enforcing macro and a test
module.

Stefan Agner f9b58e8c7d ARM: 8800/1: use choice for kernel unwinders
While in theory multiple unwinders could be compiled in, it does
not make sense in practise. Use a choice to make the unwinder
selection mutually exclusive and mandatory.

Already before this commit it has not been possible to deselect
FRAME_POINTER. Remove the obsolete comment.

Furthermore, to produce a meaningful backtrace with FRAME_POINTER
enabled the kernel needs a specific function prologue:
    mov ip, sp
    stmfd    sp!, {fp, ip, lr, pc}
    sub fp, ip, #4

To get to the required prologue gcc uses apcs and no-sched-prolog.
This compiler options are not available on clang, and clang is not
able to generate the required prologue. Make the FRAME_POINTER
config symbol depending on !clang.

Linus Torvalds 771c035372 deprecate the '__deprecated' attribute warnings entirely and for good
We haven't had lots of deprecation warnings lately, but the rdma use of
it made them flare up again.

They are not useful. They annoy everybody, and nobody ever does
anything about them, because it's always "somebody elses problem". And
when people start thinking that warnings are normal, they stop looking
at them, and the real warnings that mean something go unnoticed.

If you want to get rid of a function, just get rid of it. Convert every
user to the new world order.

And if you can't do that, then don't annoy everybody else with your
marking that says "I couldn't be bothered to fix this, so I'll just spam
everybody elses build logs with warnings about my laziness".

Make a kernelnewbies wiki page about things that could be cleaned up,
write a blog post about it, or talk to people on the mailing lists. But
don't add warnings to the kernel build about cleanup that you think
should happen but you aren't doing yourself.

Don't. Just don't.

Hans de Goede 22eceb8bf3 printk: Make CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET configurable
The goal of passing the "quiet" option to the kernel is for the kernel
to be quiet unless something really is wrong.

Sofar passing quiet has been (mostly) equivalent to passing
loglevel=4 on the kernel commandline. Which means to show any messages
with a level of KERN_ERR or higher severity on the console.

In practice this often does not result in a quiet boot though, since
there are many false-positive or otherwise harmless error messages printed,
defeating the purpose of the quiet option. Esp. the ACPICA code is really
bad wrt this, but there are plenty of others too.

This commit makes CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET configurable.

This for example will allow distros which want quiet to really mean quiet
to set CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET so that only messages with a higher severity
then KERN_ERR (CRIT, ALERT, EMERG) get printed, avoiding an endless game
of whack-a-mole silencing harmless error messages.

the dependency. Currently, KCOV can select GCC_PLUGINS even if arch
does not select HAVE_GCC_PLUGINS. This could cause the unmet direct
dependency.

Now that Kconfig can test compiler capability, let's handle this in a
more sophisticated way.

There are two ways to enable KCOV; use the compiler that natively
supports -fsanitize-coverage=trace-pc, or build the SANCOV plugin if
the compiler has ability to build GCC plugins. Hence, the correct
dependency for KCOV is:

  depends on CC_HAS_SANCOV_TRACE_PC || GCC_PLUGINS

You do not need to build the SANCOV plugin if the compiler already
supports -fsanitize-coverage=trace-pc. Hence, the select should be:

  select GCC_PLUGIN_SANCOV if !CC_HAS_SANCOV_TRACE_PC

With this, GCC_PLUGIN_SANCOV is selected only when necessary, so
scripts/Makefile.gcc-plugins can be cleaner.

I also cleaned up Kconfig and scripts/Makefile.kcov as well.

Merge tag 'overflow-v4.18-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux

Pull overflow updates from Kees Cook:
"This adds the new overflow checking helpers and adds them to the
2-factor argument allocators. And this adds the saturating size
helpers and does a treewide replacement for the struct_size() usage.
Additionally this adds the overflow testing modules to make sure
  everything works.

I'm still working on the treewide replacements for allocators with
  "simple" multiplied arguments:

     *alloc(a * b, ...) -> *alloc_array(a, b, ...)

  and

     *zalloc(a * b, ...) -> *calloc(a, b, ...)

as well as the more complex cases, but that's separable from this
portion of the series. I expect to have the rest sent before -rc1
closes; there are a lot of messy cases to clean up.

  Summary:

   - Introduce arithmetic overflow test helper functions (Rasmus)

   - Use overflow helpers in 2-factor allocators (Kees, Rasmus)

   - Introduce overflow test module (Rasmus, Kees)

   - Introduce saturating size helper functions (Matthew, Kees)

   - Treewide use of struct_size() for allocators (Kees)"

Robin Murphy 78c47830a5 dma-debug: check scatterlist segments
Drivers/subsystems creating scatterlists for DMA should be taking care
to respect the scatter-gather limitations of the appropriate device, as
described by dma_parms. A DMA API implementation cannot feasibly split
a scatterlist into *more* entries than originally passed, so it is not
well defined what they should do when given a segment larger than the
limit they are also required to respect.

Conversely, devices which are less limited than the rather conservative
defaults, or indeed have no limitations at all (e.g. GPUs with their own
internal MMU), should be encouraged to set appropriate dma_parms, as
they may get more efficient DMA mapping performance out of it.

Christoph Hellwig f616ab59c2 dma-mapping: move the NEED_DMA_MAP_STATE config symbol to lib/Kconfig
This way we have one central definition of it, and user can select it as
needed. Note that we now also always select it when CONFIG_DMA_API_DEBUG
is select, which fixes some incorrect checks in a few network drivers.
