.fault now can retry. The retry can break state machine of .fault. In
filemap_fault, if page is miss, ra->mmap_miss is increased. In the second
try, since the page is in page cache now, ra->mmap_miss is decreased. And
these are done in one fault, so we can't detect random mmap file access.
Add a new flag to indicate .fault is tried once. In the second try, skip
ra->mmap_miss decreasing. The filemap_fault state machine is ok with it.
I only tested x86, didn't test other archs, but looks the change for other
archs is obvious, but who knows :)

Historically, the top three bytes of personality have been used for
things such as ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE, which made sense only for specific
architectures.
We now however have a flag there that is general no matter the
architecture (UNAME26); generally we have to be careful to preserve the
personality flags across exec().
This patch tries to fix all architectures that forcefully overwrite
personality flags during exec() (ppc32 and s390 have been fixed recently
by commits f9783ec862 ("[S390] Do not clobber personality flags on
exec") and 59e4c3a2fe ("powerpc/32: Don't clobber personality flags on
exec") in a similar way already).

asm-generic/unistd.h and a number of asm/unistd.h files have been given
reinclusion guards that allow the guard to be overridden if __SYSCALL is
defined. Unfortunately, these files define __SYSCALL and don't undefine it
when they've finished with it, thus rendering the guard ineffective.
The reason for this override is to allow the file to be #included multiple
times with different settings on __SYSCALL for purposes like generating syscall
tables.

Ease the deployment of clkdev by providing a default asm/clkdev.h for
use if the arch does not have an include/asm/clkdev.h.
Due to limitations in Kbuild we manually add clkdev.h to all
architectures that don't have one rather than having the header appear
by default.

Make default just return 0. The current default (checking
TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG) is taken to architectures that need it;
ones that don't do polling in their idle threads don't need
to defined TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG at all.
ia64 defined both TS_POLLING (used by its tsk_is_polling())
and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG (not used at all). Killed the latter...

Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela,
ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version
into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS.
Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible.
To this end, I've defined three new config bools:
(*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC
Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic
mod_arch_specific struct.
(*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA
Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes
the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be
defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message.
(*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL
Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes
the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be
defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message.
Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are
two arches that do this.
With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced
with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file.
Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the
unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally.

When using audit on OpenRISC, an audit arch is needed. This defines
it and fixes a compile-time bug uncovered in linux-next, likely from a
cut/paste from an arch with 64/32-bit modes that defined arch_arch():
arch/openrisc/kernel/ptrace.c:190:2: error: implicit declaration of function 'audit_arch'
This replaces it with the newly defined AUDIT_ARCH_OPENRISC, since it
is only 32-bit, and currently only operates in big-endian mode.

If the counter overflows during a __delay operation, we will exit the
loop prematurely. For example, calling __delay(0x100) with the counter
at 0xffffff00 gives us a target of 0x0. The unsigned comparison in the
while loop will likely be false on the first iteration (if the counter
is now anything other than 0) and we will return early.
This patch fixes the problem by comparing deltas in the loop rather than
absolute values.

The openrisc implementation of __const_udelay casts the result of a
32-bit multiplication to 64 bits and passes the top 32 bits to __delay.
Since there are no casts on the arguments, this results in a __delay of
zero, regardless of the xloops parameter.
This patch fixes the problem by casting xloops to (unsigned long long),
ensuring that the multiplication is not truncated.

xtensa has a header (in its include/asm directory) that is a thin
wrapper around asm-generic/rmap.h. This wrapper is useless, since that
header doesn't exist. It is also unused (no file includes asm/rmap.h).
openrisc generates a similar header at build time (using a generic-y
entry in include/asm/Kbuild). This generated header is useless and
unused too.
Remove this header and this generic-y entry.

frv and xtensa both have a header (in their include/asm directories)

useless, since that header doesn't exist. They are also unused (all
files including asm/cpumask.h are x86 specific).
hexagon and openrisc generate similar headers at build time (using a
generic-y entry in include/asm/Kbuild). These generated headers are
useless and unused too.
Remove these headers and generic-y entries.

Does block_sigmask() + tracehook_signal_handler(); called when
sigframe has been successfully built. All architectures converted
to it; block_sigmask() itself is gone now (merged into this one).
I'm still not too happy with the signature, but that's a separate
story (IMO we need a structure that would contain signal number +
siginfo + k_sigaction, so that get_signal_to_deliver() would fill one,
signal_delivered(), handle_signal() and probably setup...frame() -
take one).

This changes the interfaces in <asm/word-at-a-time.h> to be a bit more
complicated, but a lot more generic.
In particular, it allows us to really do the operations efficiently on
both little-endian and big-endian machines, pretty much regardless of
machine details. For example, if you can rely on a fast population
count instruction on your architecture, this will allow you to make your
optimized <asm/word-at-a-time.h> file with that.
NOTE! The "generic" version in include/asm-generic/word-at-a-time.h is
not truly generic, it actually only works on big-endian. Why? Because
on little-endian the generic algorithms are wasteful, since you can
inevitably do better. The x86 implementation is an example of that.
(The only truly non-generic part of the asm-generic implementation is
the "find_zero()" function, and you could make a little-endian version
of it. And if the Kbuild infrastructure allowed us to pick a particular
header file, that would be lovely)
The <asm/word-at-a-time.h> functions are as follows:
- WORD_AT_A_TIME_CONSTANTS: specific constants that the algorithm
uses.
- has_zero(): take a word, and determine if it has a zero byte in it.
It gets the word, the pointer to the constant pool, and a pointer to
an intermediate "data" field it can set.
This is the "quick-and-dirty" zero tester: it's what is run inside
the hot loops.
- "prep_zero_mask()": take the word, the data that has_zero() produced,
and the constant pool, and generate an *exact* mask of which byte had
the first zero. This is run directly *outside* the loop, and allows
the "has_zero()" function to answer the "is there a zero byte"
question without necessarily getting exactly *which* byte is the
first one to contain a zero.
If you do multiple byte lookups concurrently (eg "hash_name()", which
looks for both NUL and '/' bytes), after you've done the prep_zero_mask()
phase, the result of those can be or'ed together to get the "either
or" case.
- The result from "prep_zero_mask()" can then be fed into "find_zero()"
(to find the byte offset of the first byte that was zero) or into
"zero_bytemask()" (to find the bytemask of the bytes preceding the
zero byte).
The existence of zero_bytemask() is optional, and is not necessary
for the normal string routines. But dentry name hashing needs it, so
if you enable DENTRY_WORD_AT_A_TIME you need to expose it.
This changes the generic strncpy_from_user() function and the dentry
hashing functions to use these modified word-at-a-time interfaces. This
gets us back to the optimized state of the x86 strncpy that we lost in
the previous commit when moving over to the generic version.

Sigh, I missed to check which architecture Kconfig files actually
include the core Kconfig file. There are a few which did not. So we
broke them.
Instead of adding the includes to those, we are better off to move the
include to init/Kconfig like we did already with irqs and others.
This does not change anything for the architectures using the old
style periodic timer mode. It just solves the build wreckage there.
For those architectures which use the clock events infrastructure it
moves the include of the core Kconfig file to "General setup" which is
a way more logical place than having it at random locations specified
by the architecture specific Kconfigs.

Historical prepare_to_copy() is mostly a no-op, duplicated for majority of
the architectures and the rest following the x86 model of flushing the extended
register state like fpu there.
Remove it and use the arch_dup_task_struct() instead.

Rather than requiring architectures that use gpiolib but don't have any
need to define anything custom to copy an asm/gpio.h provide a Kconfig
symbol which architectures must select in order to include gpio.h and
for other architectures just provide the trivial implementation directly.
This makes it much easier to do gpiolib updates and is also a step towards
making gpiolib APIs available on every architecture.
For architectures with existing boilerplate code leave a stub header in
place which warns on direct inclusion of asm/gpio.h and includes
linux/gpio.h to catch code that's doing this. Direct inclusion of
asm/gpio.h has long been deprecated.

The function sys_or1k_atomic was using call-saved registers without
restoring their value before returning. This is a faux pas: either
we need to restore their values or use scratch regs; the latter is
less code so that's the route this patch takes.

This switches OpenRISC over to fully using the generic dma-mapping
framework. This was almost already the case as the architecture's
implementation was essentially a copy of the generic header.
This also brings this architecture in line with the recent changes
to dma_map_ops (adding attributes to ops->alloc).

elf.h: We can export some of these symbols to userspace. libc needs them
and we just as well provide them as asm/elf.h as copying them into separate
libc headers.
ptrace.h: Having padding in the user_regs_struct isn't of any particular
value and just confuses GDB. spr_defs isn't needed in userspace; libc
has its own copy anyway.

These changes reduce the mmap_sem hold time, which is crucial

Same code. Use the generic version. The special Makefile treatment is
pointless anyway as init_task.o contains only data which is handled by
the linker script. So no point on being treated like head text.

When a host stops or suspends a VM it will set a flag to show this. The
watchdog will use these functions to determine if a softlockup is real, or the
result of a suspended VM.

optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2().
This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in
asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h.
The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of
low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg.
memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that
aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()).
These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces:
(1) asm/barrier.h
Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha.
(2) asm/switch_to.h
Move switch_to() and related stuff here.
(3) asm/exec.h
Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits
could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h.
(4) asm/cmpxchg.h
Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and
frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg().
(5) asm/bug.h
Move die() and related bits.
(6) asm/auxvec.h
Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here.
Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis."

This branch takes the PowerPC irq_host infrastructure (reverse mapping
from Linux IRQ numbers to hardware irq numbering), generalizes it,
renames it to irq_domain, and makes it available to all architectures.
Originally the plan has been to create an all-new irq_domain
implementation which addresses some of the powerpc shortcomings such
as not handling 1:1 mappings well, but doing that proved to be far
more difficult and invasive than generalizing the working code and
refactoring it in-place. So, this branch rips out the 'new'
irq_domain and replaces it with the modified powerpc version (in a
fully bisectable way of course). It converts all users over to the
new API and makes irq_domain selectable on any architecture.
No architecture is forced to enable irq_domain, but the infrastructure
is required for doing OpenFirmware style irq translations. It will
even work on SPARC even though SPARC has it's own mechanism for
translating irqs at boot time. MIPS, microblaze, embedded x86 and c6x
are converted too.
The resulting irq_domain code is probably still too verbose and can be
optimized more, but that can be done incrementally and is a task for
follow-on patches.

This branch takes the PowerPC irq_host infrastructure (reverse mapping
from Linux IRQ numbers to hardware irq numbering), generalizes it,
renames it to irq_domain, and makes it available to all architectures.
Originally the plan has been to create an all-new irq_domain
implementation which addresses some of the powerpc shortcomings such
as not handling 1:1 mappings well, but doing that proved to be far
more difficult and invasive than generalizing the working code and
refactoring it in-place. So, this branch rips out the 'new'
irq_domain and replaces it with the modified powerpc version (in a
fully bisectable way of course). It converts all users over to the
new API and makes irq_domain selectable on any architecture.
No architecture is forced to enable irq_domain, but the infrastructure
is required for doing OpenFirmware style irq translations. It will
even work on SPARC even though SPARC has it's own mechanism for
translating irqs at boot time. MIPS, microblaze, embedded x86 and c6x
are converted too.
The resulting irq_domain code is probably still too verbose and can be
optimized more, but that can be done incrementally and is a task for
follow-on patches."

The pt_regs struct had both a 'syscallno' field and an 'orig_gpr11' field
and it wasn't really clear how these were supposed to be used. This patch
removes the syscallno field altogether and makes orig_gpr11 work more
like other architectures: keep track of syscall number in progress or
hold -1 for non-syscall exceptions.

virt_addr_valid() shouldn't be comparing the address to memory_end which is
a phys_addr_t. Change this to do like other arches and check that the

Several architectures define their own empty irq_dispose_mapping(). Since
the irq_domain code is centralized now, there is little need to do so. This
patch removes them and creates a new empty copy when !CONFIG_IRQ_DOMAIN is
selected.
The patch also means that IRQ_DOMAIN becomes selectable on all architectures.

It takes a couple of instructions to actually configure a clock event
so setting an alarm just 1 clock cycle in the future isn't going to work;
doing so results in setting an alarm in the "past" in which case the event
won't fire until the timer overflows and rolls back around to the "current
time".
Not quite sure how many clock cycles it actually takes to get through to
actually writing the register, but 100 seems to work reliably.
Use generic helper to set up the clock event while we're at it.

As described in e6fa16ab ("signal: sigprocmask() should do
retarget_shared_pending()") the modification of current->blocked is
incorrect as we need to check whether the signal we're about to block
is pending in the shared queue.
Also, use the new helper function introduced in commit 5e6292c0f2
("signal: add block_sigmask() for adding sigmask to current->blocked")
which centralises the code for updating current->blocked after
successfully delivering a signal and reduces the amount of duplicate
code across architectures. In the past some architectures got this
code wrong, so using this helper function should stop that from
happening again.

get_signal_to_deliver() already resets the signal handler if
SA_ONESHOT is set in ka->sa.sa_flags, there's no need to do it again
in handle_signal(). Furthermore, because we were modifying
ka->sa.sa_handler (which is a copy of sighand->action[]) instead of
sighand->action[] the original code actually had no effect on signal
delivery.

Instead of open coding the sequence from force_sigsegv() just call
it. This also fixes a bug because we were modifying ka->sa.sa_handler
(which is a copy of sighand->action[]), whereas the intention of the
code was to modify sighand->action[] directly.
As the original code was working with a copy it had no effect on
signal delivery.

Thus, for example, "make dtbs" will rebuild tegra-harmony.dtb if only

lack of this feature recently caused me to have very confusing "git
bisect" results.
For ARM, it's obvious what to add to $(targets). I'm not familiar enough
with other architectures to know what to add there. Powerpc appears to
already add various .dtb files into $(targets), but the other archs may
need something added to $(targets) to work.

frv, h8300, m68k, microblaze, openrisc, score, um and xtensa currently
do not register a CPU device. Add the config option GENERIC_CPU_DEVICES
which causes a generic CPU device to be registered for each present CPU,
and make all these architectures select it.

Those two APIs were provided to optimize the calls of
tick_nohz_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_enter() into a single
irq disabled section. This way no interrupt happening in-between would
needlessly process any RCU job.
Now we are talking about an optimization for which benefits
have yet to be measured. Let's start simple and completely decouple
idle rcu and dyntick idle logics to simplify.

It is assumed that rcu won't be used once we switch to tickless
mode and until we restart the tick. However this is not always
true, as in x86-64 where we dereference the idle notifiers after
the tick is stopped.
To prepare for fixing this, add two new APIs:
tick_nohz_idle_enter_norcu() and tick_nohz_idle_exit_norcu().
If no use of RCU is made in the idle loop between
tick_nohz_enter_idle() and tick_nohz_exit_idle() calls, the arch
must instead call the new *_norcu() version such that the arch doesn't
need to call rcu_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_exit().
Otherwise the arch must call tick_nohz_enter_idle() and
tick_nohz_exit_idle() and also call explicitly:
- rcu_idle_enter() after its last use of RCU before the CPU is put
to sleep.
- rcu_idle_exit() before the first use of RCU after the CPU is woken
up.

The tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick() function, which tries to delay
the next timer tick as long as possible, can be called from two
places:
- From the idle loop to start the dytick idle mode
- From interrupt exit if we have interrupted the dyntick
idle mode, so that we reprogram the next tick event in
case the irq changed some internal state that requires this
action.
There are only few minor differences between both that
are handled by that function, driven by the ts->inidle
cpu variable and the inidle parameter. The whole guarantees
that we only update the dyntick mode on irq exit if we actually
interrupted the dyntick idle mode, and that we enter in RCU extended
quiescent state from idle loop entry only.
Split this function into:
- tick_nohz_idle_enter(), which sets ts->inidle to 1, enters
dynticks idle mode unconditionally if it can, and enters into RCU
extended quiescent state.
- tick_nohz_irq_exit() which only updates the dynticks idle mode
when ts->inidle is set (ie: if tick_nohz_idle_enter() has been called).
To maintain symmetry, tick_nohz_restart_sched_tick() has been renamed
into tick_nohz_idle_exit().
This simplifies the code and micro-optimize the irq exit path (no need
for local_irq_save there). This also prepares for the split between
dynticks and rcu extended quiescent state logics. We'll need this split to
further fix illegal uses of RCU in extended quiescent states in the idle
loop.

memblock_init() initializes arrays for regions and memblock itself;
however, all these can be done with struct initializers and
memblock_init() can be removed. This patch kills memblock_init() and
initializes memblock with struct initializer.
The only difference is that the first dummy entries don't have .nid
set to MAX_NUMNODES initially. This doesn't cause any behavior
difference.

with generic ones) removed arch/x86/include/asm/memblock.h and dropped
its inclusion from include/linux/memblock.h which breaks other
architectures which depended on the generic memblock.h pulling in the
arch specific one.
However, the proper fix isn't adding back the asm inclusion. memblock
doesn't have any arch dependent part and doesn't need arch specific
header file and asm/memblock.h files are either practically empty or
contain mostly unrelated arch specific stuff.
* In microblaze, sh, powerpc, sparc and openrisc, asm/memblock.h is
either empty or just contains unused MEMBLOCK_DBG() macro. Remove
them.
* In arm and unicore32, asm/memblock.h contains arch specific stuff.
Include it directly from its users. It might be a good idea to
rename the header file to avoid confusion.

Fix up trivial conflict in drivers/net/ethernet/stmicro/stmmac/Kconfig
as per Michal: the STMMAC_DUAL_MAC config variable is still unused and
should be deleted.
There are numerous broken references to Documentation files (in other
Documentation files, in comments, etc.). These broken references are
caused by typo's in the references, and by renames or removals of the
Documentation files. Some broken references are simply odd.
Fix these broken references, sometimes by dropping the irrelevant text
they were part of.

For the initial architecture submission, not all of the DMA ops were
implemented. This patch adds the *map_page and *map_sg variants of the
DMA mapping ops.
This patch is currently of interest mainly to some drivers that haven't
been submitted upstream yet.

As it was decided not to export struct pt_regs to userspace, struct
sigcontext shouldn't be using it either. The pt_regs struct for OpenRISC
is kernel internal and the layout of the registers may change in the
future. The struct user_regs_struct is what is guaranteed to remain
stable, so struct sigcontext may use that instead.
This patch removes the usage of struct pt_regs in struct sigcontext and
makes according changes in signal.c to get the register layout right.
The usp field is removed from the sigcontext structure as this information
is already contained in the user_regs_struct.

The OpenRISC Linux kernel conforms to the "generic" syscall interface which
contains only the reduced set of syscalls deemed necessary for new
architectures. Unfortunately, the uClibc port for OpenRISC does not fully
support this reduced set; as such, an additional patch available out-of-tree
needs to be applied to the kernel in order to use the current uClibc. This
is just a temporary measure until the libc port can be straightened out; it
is likely that OpenRISC will make the transition to glibc shortly where the
generic syscall interface is better supported.

Implements support for the OpenRISC timer which is a 28 bit cycle counter
that can be read out of a special purpose register. This counter is
used as a both a clock event and clocksource device.
