Incoming packet is dropped silently by sk_filter(), if the skb was
allocated from pfmemalloc reserves and the corresponding socket is
not marked with the SOCK_MEMALLOC flag.
Igb driver allocates pages for DMA with __skb_alloc_page(), which
calls alloc_pages_node() with the __GFP_MEMALLOC flag. So, in case
of OOM condition, igb can get pages with pfmemalloc flag set.
If an incoming packet hits the pfmemalloc page and is large enough
(small packets are copying into the memory, allocated with
netdev_alloc_skb_ip_align(), so they are not affected), it will be
dropped.
This behavior is ok under high memory pressure, but the problem is
that the igb driver reuses these mapped pages. So, packets are still
dropping even if all memory issues are gone and there is a plenty
of free memory.
In my case, some TCP sessions hang on a small percentage (< 0.1%)
of machines days after OOMs.
Fix this by avoiding reuse of such pages.

The hardware can automatically generate pause frames when the number
of free buffers drops under a certain threshold, but in order to do this,
the address of the last free buffer needs to be written to a specific
register for each RX queue.
This has to be done in 'gfar_clean_rx_ring' which is called for each
RX queue. In order not to impact performance, by adding a register write
for each incoming packet, this operation is done only when the PAUSE frame
transmission is enabled.
Whenever the link is readjusted, this capability is turned on or off.

For boards without a reset GPIO we skip the delay between enabling the
pcie_ref_clk and touching the RC registers for configuration. This hangs
the system if there isn't a proper delay to ensure the clocks are settled
in the DW PCIe core.
Also iMX6Q always needs an additional 10us delay to make sure the reset is
propagated through the core, as we don't have an explicitly controlled
reset input on this SoC.
This fixes a problem with 3fce0e882f ("PCI: imx6: Delay enabling
reference clock for SS until it stabilizes"): the kernel doesn't boot on
systems that don't pass the PCI GPIO reset in the DTB. This regression

It is reported that Samsung laptops that need to poll events are broken by
the following commit:
Commit 3afcf2ece4
Subject: ACPI / EC: Add support to disallow QR_EC to be issued when SCI_EVT isn't set
The behaviors of the 2 vendor firmwares are conflict:
1. Acer: OSPM shouldn't issue QR_EC unless SCI_EVT is set, firmware
automatically sets SCI_EVT as long as there is event queued up.
2. Samsung: OSPM should issue QR_EC whatever SCI_EVT is set, firmware
returns 0 when there is no event queued up.
This patch is a quick fix to distinguish the behaviors to make Acer
behavior only effective for Acer EC firmware so that the breakages on
Samsung EC firmware can be avoided.

It is reported that the following commit breaks Samsung hardware:
Commit: 558e4736f2.
Subject: ACPI / EC: Add support to disallow QR_EC to be issued before
completing previous QR_EC
Which means the Samsung behavior conflicts with the Acer behavior.
1. Samsung may behave like:
[ +event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
[ +event 2 ] SCI_EVT set
write QR_EC
read event
[ -event 1 ] SCI_EVT clear
Without the above commit, Samsung can work:
[ +event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
[ +event 2 ] SCI_EVT set
write QR_EC
CAN prepare next QR_EC as SCI_EVT=1
read event
[ -event 1 ] SCI_EVT clear
write QR_EC
read event
[ -event 2 ] SCI_EVT clear
With the above commit, Samsung cannot work:
[ +event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
[ +event 2 ] SCI_EVT set
write QR_EC
read event
[ -event 1 ] SCI_EVT clear
CANNOT prepare next QR_EC as SCI_EVT=0
2. Acer may behave like:
[ +event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
[ +event 2 ]
write QR_EC
read event
[ -event 1 ] SCI_EVT clear
[ +event 2 ] SCI_EVT set
Without the above commit, Acer cannot work when there is only 1 event:
[ +event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
write QR_EC
can prepared next QR_EC as SCI_EVT=1
read event
[ -event 1 ] SCI_EVT clear
CANNOT write QR_EC as SCI_EVT=0
With the above commit, Acer can work:
[ +event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
[ +event 2 ]
write QR_EC
read event
[ -event 1 ] SCI_EVT set
can prepare next QR_EC because SCI_EVT=0
CAN write QR_EC as SCI_EVT=1
Since Acer can also work with only the following commit applied:
Commit: 3afcf2ece4
Subject: ACPI / EC: Add support to disallow QR_EC to be issued when
SCI_EVT isn't set
commit 558e4736f2 can be reverted.

The commit which introduced TransducerSerialNumber (368c966) is missing
two crucial implementation details. Firstly, the commit does not set the
type/code/bit/max fields as expected later down the code which can cause
the driver to crash when a tablet with this usage is connected. Secondly,
the call to 'set_bit' causes MSC_PULSELED to be sent instead of the
expected MSC_SERIAL. This commit addreses both issues.

bcm_sysport_resume() was missing an UniMAC reset which can lead to
various receive FIFO corruptions coming out of a suspend cycle. If the
RX FIFO is stuck, it will deliver corrupted/duplicate packets towards
the host CPU interface.
This could be reproduced on crowded network and when Wake-on-LAN is
enabled for this particular interface because the switch still forwards
packets towards the host CPU interface (SYSTEMPORT), and we had to leave
the UniMAC RX enable bit on to allow matching MagicPackets.
Once we re-enter the resume function, there is a small window during
which the UniMAC receive is still enabled, and we start queueing
packets, but the RDMA and RBUF engines are not ready, which leads to
having packets stuck in the UniMAC RX FIFO, ultimately delivered towards
the host CPU as corrupted.

can result in packets to be discarded during interface bringup.
A similar but more serious window exists in bcm_sysport_resume() during
which we can have the RDMA engine not fully prepared to receive packets
and yet having RX interrupts enabled.
Fix this my moving the RX interrupt enable down to
bcm_sysport_netif_start() after napi_enable() for the RX path is called,
which fixes both call sites: bcm_sysport_open() and
bcm_sysport_resume().

channel to userspace, a sanity check for a userspace value
and the remaining two are just documentation fixes."
For the iwlwifi bits, Emmanuel says:
"I revert here a patch that caused interoperability issues.
dvm gets a fix for a bug that was reported by many users.
Two minor fixes for BT Coex and platform power fix that helps
reducing latency when the PCIe link goes to low power states."
In addition...
Felix Fietkau adds a couple of ath code fixes related to regulatory
rule enforcement.
Hauke Mehrtens fixes a build break with bcma when CONFIG_OF_ADDRESS
is not set.
Karsten Wiese provides a trio of minor fixes for rtl8192cu.
Kees Cook prevents a potential information leak in rtlwifi.
Larry Finger also brings a trio of minor fixes for rtlwifi.
Rafał Miłecki adds a device ID to the bcma bus driver.
Rickard Strandqvist offers some strn* -> strl* changes in brcmfmac
to eliminate non-terminated string issues.
Sujith Manoharan avoids some ath9k stalls by enabling HW queue control
only for MCC.

The mv88e6171 can support two different tagging protocols, DSA and
EDSA. The switch driver structure only allows one protocol to be
enumerated, and DSA was chosen. However the Kconfig entry ensures the
EDSA tagging code is built. With a minimal configuration, we then end
up with a mismatch. The probe is successful, EDSA tagging is used, but
the switch is configured for DSA, resulting in mangled packets.
Change the switch driver structure to enumerate EDSA, fixing the
mismatch.

In certain circumstances the PSL (Power Service Layer, which provides
translation services for CXL hardware) can send an interrupt for a
segment miss that the kernel has already handled. This can happen if
multiple translations for the same segment are queued in the PSL before
the kernel has restarted the first translation.
The CXL driver does not expect this situation and does not check if a
segment had already been handled. This could cause a duplicate segment
table entry which in turn caused a PSL error taking down the card.
This patch fixes the issue by checking for existing entries in the
segment table that match the segment we are trying to insert, so as to
avoid inserting duplicate entries.

This patch simplifies the process of finding a free segment table entry
by disabling the secondary hash. This reduces the number of possible
entries in the segment table for a given address from 16 to 8.
Due to the large segment sizes we use it is extremely unlikely that the
secondary hash would ever have been used in practice, so this should not
have any negative impacts and may even improve performance due to the
reduced number of comparisons that software & hardware need to perform.
This patch clears the SC bit in the hardware's state register
(CXL_PSL_SR_An) to disable the secondary hash in the hardware since we
can no longer fill out entries using it.

If an asynchronous suspend_late or freeze_late callback fails
during the SUSPEND, FREEZE or QUIESCE phases, we don't propagate the
corresponding error correctly, in effect ignoring the error and
continuing the suspend-to-ram/hibernation. During suspend-to-ram this
could leave some devices without a valid saved context, leading to a
failure to reinitialize them during resume. During hibernation this
could leave some devices active interfeering with the creation /
restoration of the hibernation image. Also this could leave the
corresponding devices without a valid saved context and failure to
reinitialize them during resume.

Commit 6ab3430129 ("mfd: Add ACPI support") made the MFD subdevices
share the parent MFD ACPI companion if no _HID/_CID is specified for
the subdevice in mfd_cell description. However, since all the subdevices
share the ACPI companion, the match and modalias generation logic started
to use the ACPI companion as well resulting this:
# cat /sys/bus/platform/devices/HID-SENSOR-200041.6.auto/modalias
acpi:INT33D1:PNP0C50:
instead of the expected one
# cat /sys/bus/platform/devices/HID-SENSOR-200041.6.auto/modalias
platform:HID-SENSOR-200041
In other words the subdevice modalias is overwritten by the one taken from
ACPI companion. This causes udev not to load the driver anymore.
It is useful to be able to share the ACPI companion so that MFD subdevices
(and possibly other devices as well) can access the ACPI resources even if
they do not have ACPI representation in the namespace themselves.
An example where this is used is Minnowboard LPC driver that creates GPIO
as a subdevice among other things. Without the ACPI companion gpiolib is
not able to lookup the corresponding GPIO controller from ACPI GpioIo
resource.
To fix this, restrict the match and modalias logic to be limited to the
first (primary) physical device associated with the given ACPI comapnion.
The secondary devices will still be able to access the ACPI companion,
but they will be matched in a different way.

This patch fixes trace formatting issues using the
QETH_CARD_TEXT_ macro. The total size of each trace entry
is 8 bytes. Some of the sprintf formats exceed these 8
bytes (for example using abcd:%d and the converted value
needs more than 3 bytes). The solution is to shorten the
text prepending the value or use a different format (%x).

A full Rx ring only requires 1 MiB of memory. This is not enough
memory that it is useful to dynamically scale the number of Rx
requests in the ring based on traffic rates, because:
a) Even the full 1 MiB is a tiny fraction of a typically modern Linux
VM (for example, the AWS micro instance still has 1 GiB of memory).
b) Netfront would have used up to 1 MiB already even with moderate
data rates (there was no adjustment of target based on memory
pressure).
c) Small VMs are going to typically have one VCPU and hence only one
queue.
Keeping the ring full of Rx requests handles bursty traffic better
than trying to converge on an optimal number of requests to keep
filled.
On a 4 core host, an iperf -P 64 -t 60 run from dom0 to a 4 VCPU guest
improved from 5.1 Gbit/s to 5.6 Gbit/s. Gains with more bursty
traffic are expected to be higher.

Commit c387f07e62 (clocksource: arm_arch_timer: Discard unavailable
timers correctly) changed the way the driver makes sure both the memory
and system-register timers have been probed before finalizing the probing.
There is a interesting flaw in this logic that leads to this final step
never to be executed. Things seems to work pretty well until something
actually needs the data that is produced during this final stage.
For example, KVM explodes on the first run of a guest when executed on
a platform that has both memory and sysreg nodes (Juno, for example).
Just fix the damned logic, and enjoy booting VMs again.
Tested on a Juno system.

After the NAPIfication of sunvnet, we no longer need to
synchronize by doing irqsave/restore on vio.lock in the

NAPI ->poll() is non-reentrant, so all RX processing occurs
strictly in a serialized environment. TX reclaim is done in NAPI

Note that we want to minimize the number of LDC

because of the NAPI budget limitation. Instead, note the end index
as part of port state, and resume from this index when the

If a frontend not receiving packets it is useful to detect this and
turn off the carrier so packets are dropped early instead of being
queued and drained when they expire.
A to-guest queue is stalled if it doesn't have enough free slots for a
an extended period of time (default 60 s).
If at least one queue is stalled, the carrier is turned off (in the
expectation that the other queues will soon stall as well). The
carrier is only turned on once all queues are ready.
When the frontend connects, all the queues start in the stalled state
and only become ready once the frontend queues enough Rx requests.

Netback needs to discard old to-guest skb's (guest Rx queue drain) and
it needs detect guest Rx stalls (to disable the carrier so packets are
discarded earlier), but the current implementation is very broken.
1. The check in hard_start_xmit of the slot availability did not
consider the number of packets that were already in the guest Rx
queue. This could allow the queue to grow without bound.
The guest stops consuming packets and the ring was allowed to fill
leaving S slot free. Netback queues a packet requiring more than S
slots (ensuring that the ring stays with S slots free). Netback
queue indefinately packets provided that then require S or fewer
slots.
2. The Rx stall detection is not triggered in this case since the
(host) Tx queue is not stopped.
3. If the Tx queue is stopped and a guest Rx interrupt occurs, netback
will consider this an Rx purge event which may result in it taking
the carrier down unnecessarily. It also considers a queue with
only 1 slot free as unstalled (even though the next packet might
not fit in this).
The internal guest Rx queue is limited by a byte length (to 512 Kib,
enough for half the ring). The (host) Tx queue is stopped and started
based on this limit. This sets an upper bound on the amount of memory
used by packets on the internal queue.
This allows the estimatation of the number of slots for an skb to be
removed (it wasn't a very good estimate anyway). Instead, the guest
Rx thread just waits for enough free slots for a maximum sized packet.
skbs queued on the internal queue have an 'expires' time (set to the
current time plus the drain timeout). The guest Rx thread will detect
when the skb at the head of the queue has expired and discard expired
skbs. This sets a clear upper bound on the length of time an skb can
be queued for. For a guest being destroyed the maximum time needed to
wait for all the packets it sent to be dropped is still the drain
timeout (10 s) since it will not be sending new packets.
Rx stall detection is reintroduced in a later commit.

am not aware of any frontends that do not implement this.

Intel Wired LAN Driver Updates 2014-10-23
This series contains updates to i40e and i40evf.
Jesse modifies the i40e driver to only notify the firmware on link up/down
and qualified module events. Also simplified the job of managing link
state by using the admin queue receive event for link events as a signal
to tell the driver to update link state.
Jeff (me) cleans up the inconsistent use of tabs for indentation in the admin
queue command header file.
Neerav converts the use of udelay() to usleep_range().
Anjali fixes a bug where receive would stop after some stress by adding
a sleep and restart as well as moving the setting of flow control because
it should be done at a PF level and not a VSI level.
Mitch adds code to handle link events when updating the PF switch, which
allows link information to be properly provided to VFS in all cases.
Catherine adds driver support for 10GBaseT and bumps driver version.

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.18-rc2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This is material that didn't make it to my 3.18-rc1 pull request for
various reasons, mostly related to timing and travel (LinuxCon EU /
LPC) plus a couple of fixes for recent bugs.
The only really new thing here is the PM QoS class for memory
bandwidth, but it is simple enough and users of it will be added in
the next cycle. One major change in behavior is that platform devices
enumerated by ACPI will use 32-bit DMA mask by default. Also included
is an ACPICA update to a new upstream release, but that's mostly
cleanups, changes in tools and similar. The rest is fixes and
cleanups mostly.
Specifics:
- Fix for a recent PCI power management change that overlooked the
fact that some IRQ chips might not be able to configure PCIe PME
for system wakeup from Lucas Stach.
- Fix for a bug introduced in 3.17 where acpi_device_wakeup() is
called with a wrong ordering of arguments from Zhang Rui.
- A bunch of intel_pstate driver fixes (all -stable candidates) from
Dirk Brandewie, Gabriele Mazzotta and Pali Rohár.
- Fixes for a rather long-standing problem with the OOM killer and
the freezer that frozen processes killed by the OOM do not actually
release any memory until they are thawed, so OOM-killing them is
rather pointless, with a couple of cleanups on top (Michal Hocko,
Cong Wang, Rafael J Wysocki).
- ACPICA update to upstream release 20140926, inlcuding mostly
cleanups reducing differences between the upstream ACPICA and the
kernel code, tools changes (acpidump, acpiexec) and support for the
_DDN object (Bob Moore, Lv Zheng).
- New PM QoS class for memory bandwidth from Tomeu Vizoso.
- Default 32-bit DMA mask for platform devices enumerated by ACPI
(this change is mostly needed for some drivers development in
progress targeted at 3.19) from Heikki Krogerus.
- ACPI EC driver cleanups, mostly related to debugging, from Lv
Zheng.
- cpufreq-dt driver updates from Thomas Petazzoni.
- powernv cpuidle driver update from Preeti U Murthy"

Pull thermal management updates from Zhang Rui:
"Sorry that I missed the merge window as there is a bug found in the
last minute, and I have to fix it and wait for the code to be tested
in linux-next tree for a few days. Now the buggy patch has been
dropped entirely from my next branch. Thus I hope those changes can
still be merged in 3.18-rc2 as most of them are platform thermal
driver changes.
Specifics:
- introduce ACPI INT340X thermal drivers.
Newer laptops and tablets may have thermal sensors and other
devices with thermal control capabilities that are exposed for the
OS to use via the ACPI INT340x device objects. Several drivers are
introduced to expose the temperature information and cooling
ability from these objects to user-space via the normal thermal
framework.
From: Lu Aaron, Lan Tianyu, Jacob Pan and Zhang Rui.
- introduce a new thermal governor, which just uses a hysteresis to
switch abruptly on/off a cooling device. This governor can be used
to control certain fan devices that can not be throttled but just
switched on or off. From: Peter Feuerer.
- introduce support for some new thermal interrupt functions on
i.MX6SX, in IMX thermal driver. From: Anson, Huang.
- introduce tracing support on thermal framework. From: Punit
Agrawal.
- small fixes in OF thermal and thermal step_wise governor"

When user requests V4L2_MEMORY_MMAP type buffers, the videobuf-core
will assign the corresponding offset to the 'boff' field of the
videobuf_buffer for each requested buffer sequentially. Later, user
may call mmap() to map one or all of the buffers with the 'offset'
parameter which is equal to its 'boff' value. Obviously, the 'offset'
value is only used to find the matched buffer instead of to be the
real offset from the buffer's physical start address as used by
vm_iomap_memory(). So, in some case that if the offset is not zero,
vm_iomap_memory() will fail.

using the admin queue receive event for link events as a doorbell
that tells the driver to update link state.
Additionally, add a workaround will help make sure the link state in the

by refreshing the link state every service task interval.

Code which changes policy to powersave changes also max_policy_pct based on
max_freq. Code which change max_perf_pct has upper limit base on value
max_policy_pct. When policy is changing from powersave back to performance
then max_policy_pct is not changed. Which means that changing max_perf_pct is
not possible to high values if max_freq was too low in powersave policy.
Test case:
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
800000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
3300000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
performance
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
100
$ echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
$ echo 800000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
$ echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
powersave
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
800000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
20
$ echo performance > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
$ echo 3300000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
$ echo 100 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
performance
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
3300000
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
24
And now intel_pstate driver allows to set maximal value for max_perf_pct based
on max_policy_pct which is 24 for previous powersave max_freq 800000.
This patch will set default value for max_policy_pct when setting policy to
performance so it will allow to set also max value for max_perf_pct.

When mac80211 wants to ensure that a frame is sent, it calls
the flush() callback. Until now, iwldvm implemented this by
waiting that all the frames are sent (ACKed or timeout).
In case of weak signal, this can take a significant amount
of time, delaying the next connection (in case of roaming).
Many users have reported that the flush would take too long
leading to the following error messages to be printed:
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: fail to flush all tx fifo queues Q 2
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Current SW read_ptr 161 write_ptr 201

[snip]
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Q 0 is active and mapped to fifo 3 ra_tid 0x0000 [9,9]
[snip]
Instead of waiting for these packets, simply drop them. This
significantly improves the responsiveness of the network.
Note that all the queues are flushed, but the VO one. This
is not typically used by the applications and it likely
contains management frames that are useful for connection
or roaming.

Many AP devices do not have the proper regulatory domain programmed in
EEPROM. Instead they expect the software to set the appropriate region.
For these devices, the country code defaults to US, and the driver uses

On devices bought in Europe this can lead to tx power being set too high
on the band edges, even if the cfg80211 regdomain is set correctly.

Currently the amd-xgbe driver increments the packets processed counter
each time a descriptor is processed. Since a packet can be represented
by more than one descriptor incrementing the counter in this way is not
appropriate. Also, since multiple descriptors cause the budget check
to be short circuited, sometimes the returned value from the poll
function would be larger than the budget value resulting in a WARN_ONCE
being triggered.
Update the polling logic to properly account for the number of packets
processed and exit when the budget value is reached.

Since commit 278d240478 (net: fec: ptp: Enable PPS output based on ptp clock)
fec_enet_interrupt calls fec_ptp_check_pps_event unconditionally, which calls
into ptp_clock_event. If fep->ptp_clock is NULL, ptp_clock_event tries to
dereference the NULL pointer.
Since on i.MX53 fep->bufdesc_ex is not set, fec_ptp_init is never called,
and fep->ptp_clock is NULL, which reliably causes a kernel panic.
This patch adds a check for fep->ptp_clock == NULL in fec_enet_interrupt.

The PLL settings are committed by setting GO bit, which is then cleared
by the HW when the settings have been taken into use.
The current PLL code handles this wrong: instead of waiting for the bit
to be cleared, it waits for the bit to be set. Usually, the bit is
always set, as the CPU has just set it before. However, if the CPU takes
enough time between setting the GO bit and checking it, the HW may
already have cleared the bit and this leads to timeout error.

Since strsep is used to tokenize the options string, after each option
match the code should use "continue" to get the next token from strsep.
This patch applies this pattern consistently.
Previously, for "scrollback:" and "map:" the parse code would return
(unconditionally: strsep ensures *options != ','), causing any
following option to be ignored, while for "vc:" the parse code would
go on to parse further options within the same token, which could lead
