Right at the moment, the libata error handler is incredibly
monolithic. This makes it impossible to use from composite drivers
like libsas and ipr which have to handle error themselves in the first
instance.
The essence of the change is to split the monolithic error handler
into two components: one which handles a queue of ata commands for
processing and the other which handles the back end of readying a
port. This allows the upper error handler fine grained control in
calling libsas functions (and making sure they only get called for ATA
commands whose lower errors have been fixed up).

The SCSI host eh_cmd_q should be protected by the host lock (not the
port lock). This probably doesn't matter that much at the moment,
since we try to serialise the add and eh pieces, but it might matter
in future for more convenient error handling. Plus this switches
libata to the standard eh pattern where you lock, remove from the cmd
queue to a local list and unlock and then operate on the local list.

For historical reasons, libsas uses the scsi host lock as the ata port
lock, and libata always uses the ata host. For the old eh, this was
largely irrelevant since the two locks were never mixed inside the
code. However, the new eh has a case where it nests acquisition of
the host lock inside the port lock (this does look rather deadlock
prone). Obviously this would be an instant deadlock if the port lock
were the host lock, so switch the libsas paths to use the ata host
lock as well.

The function ata_sas_port_init() has always really done its own thing.
However, as a precursor to moving to the libata new eh, it has to be
properly using the standard libata scan paths. This means separating
the current libata scan paths into pieces which can be shared with
libsas and pieces which cant (really just the async call and the host
scan).

ata_eh_analyze_serror() suppresses hotplug notifications if LPM is
being used because LPM generates spurious hotplug events. It compared
whether link->lpm_policy was different from ATA_LPM_MAX_POWER to
determine whether LPM is enabled; however, this is incorrect as for
drivers which don't implement LPM, lpm_policy is always
ATA_LPM_UNKNOWN. This disabled hotplug detection for all drivers
which don't implement LPM.
Fix it by comparing whether lpm_policy is greater than
ATA_LPM_MAX_POWER.

ata_pio_sectors() expects buffer for each sector to be contained in a
single page; otherwise, it ends up overrunning the first page. This
is achieved by setting queue DMA alignment. If sector_size is smaller
than PAGE_SIZE and all buffers are sector_size aligned, buffer for
each sector is always contained in a single page.
This wasn't applied to ATAPI devices but IDENTIFY_PACKET is executed
as ATA_PROT_PIO and thus uses ata_pio_sectors(). Newer versions of
udev issue IDENTIFY_PACKET with unaligned buffer triggering the
problem and causing oops.
This patch fixes the problem by setting sdev->sector_size to
ATA_SECT_SIZE on ATATPI devices and always setting DMA alignment to
sector_size. While at it, add a warning for the unlikely but still
possible scenario where sector_size is larger than PAGE_SIZE, in which
case the alignment wouldn't be enough.

Commit 5f173107ec added HFLAG_YES_FBS workaround for 88SE9128
(1b4b:9123).
However, that change inadvertently caused the legacy IDE interface of
the controller (with the same pci id) to become associated with the AHCI
driver as well, causing the driver to try to bring the interface up in
vain.
Fix that by matching against class as well.

The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.
This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).
Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

CONFIG_HAVE_PATA_PLATFORM, by virtue of where its defined, has a
dependency on CONFG_ATA and CONFIG_ATA_SFF. This causes Kconfig
warnings when it is selected by various architectures, such as
warning: (ARCH_VEXPRESS && <choice> || ARCH_RPC && <choice> || MACH_VPAC270 && ARCH_PXA || MACH_REALVIEW_PB11MP && ARCH_REALVIEW || MACH_REALVIEW_PBA8 && ARCH_REALVIEW || MACH_REALVIEW_PBX && ARCH_REALVIEW || MACH_BAST_IDE && ARCH_S3C2410 || MACH_ANUBIS && ARCH_S3C2410) selects HAVE_PATA_PLATFORM which has unmet direct dependencies (ATA && ATA_SFF)
Since this option is only used to control visibility of the
CONFIG_PATA_PLATFORM option and isn't itself visible in the menu,
it is straightforward to simply remove these dependencies rather
than adjust all the architectures.

Allow hpt3x2n_pci_clock() to calculate the average f_CNT register value iff
HighPoint BIOS hasn't saved one, just like the 'pata_hpt37x' driver (reading
the full 16-bit register, unlike what that driver does), so that this driver
would work correctly on e.g. non-x86 machine with 66 MHz PCI.
I'm not sure why Alan has only done this in one driver and not the other...

The Marvell bridge chips used on HighPoint SATA cards do not seem to support
the UltraDMA modes 1, 2, and 3 as well as any MWDMA modes; these cards are
based on HPT372/372A/372N/374 chips (judging from the vendor drivers), so
the Linux drivers need to have a mode_filter() method for these chips...

Low level drivers may behave differently depending on the current
link->lpm_policy. During ata_eh_set_lpm(), DIPM enable commands are
issued after the successful completion of ap->ops->set_lpm(), which
means that the controller is already in the target state. This causes
DIPM enable commands to be processed with mismatching controller power
state and link->lpm_policy value.
In ahci, link->lpm_policy is used to ignore certain PHY events if LPM
is enabled; however, as DIPM commands are issued with stale
link->lpm_policy, they sometimes end up triggering these conditions
and get aborted leading to LPM configuration failure.
Fix it by updating link->lpm_policy before issuing DIPM enable
commands.

ata_qc_complete() contains special handling for certain commands. For
example, it schedules EH for device revalidation after certain
configurations are changed. These shouldn't be applied to EH
commands but they were.
In most cases, it doesn't cause an actual problem because EH doesn't
issue any command which would trigger special handling; however, ACPI
can issue such commands via _GTF which can cause weird interactions.
Restructure ata_qc_complete() such that EH commands are always passed
on to __ata_qc_complete().

pata_cs5536 does work on the other platforms(e.g. Loongson, a MIPS
variant), so, remove the dependency of X86_32 and fix the building
errors under the other platforms via only reserving the X86_32 specific
parts for X86_32.
pata_amd also supports cs5536 IDE controller, but this one saves about
33k for the compressed kernel image(vmlinuz for MIPS).

While separating out BMDMA irq handler from SFF, commit c3b28894
(libata-sff: separate out BMDMA irq handler) incorrectly made
__ata_sff_port_intr() consider an IRQ to be an idle one if the host
state was transitioned to HSM_ST_ERR by ata_bmdma_port_intr().
This makes BMDMA drivers ignore IRQs reporting host bus error which
leads to timeouts instead of triggering EH immediately. Fix it by
making __ata_sff_port_intr() consider the IRQ to be an idle one iff
the state is HSM_ST_IDLE. This is equivalent to adding HSM_ST_ERR to
the "break"ing case but less error-prone.

cmd->serial_number is never tested in any path we reach; therefore we may
remove the call to scsi_cmd_get_serial() inside DEF_SCSI_QCMD, the SCSI
host_lock acquisition surrounding it, and our own SCSI host_lock
unlock+relock cycle.

Move the mid-layer's ->queuecommand() invocation from being locked
with the host lock to being unlocked to facilitate speeding up the
critical path for drivers who don't need this lock taken anyway.
The patch below presents a simple SCSI host lock push-down as an

SCSI commands may be issued between __scsi_add_device() and dev->sdev
assignment, so it's unsafe for ata_qc_complete() to dereference
dev->sdev->locked without checking whether it's NULL or not. Fix it.

The new devctl func added for us to the driver has the wrong return
type. Which is to say there shouldn't be any. This fixes compile
time warnings as there shouldn't be any runtime difference.

ATA devices don't send D2H Reg FIS after an successful ATA PIO data-in
command. The host is supposed to take the TF and E_Status of the
preceding PIO Setup FIS. Update ahci_qc_fill_rtf() such that it takes
TF + E_Status from PIO Setup FIS after a successful ATA PIO data-in
command.
Without this patch, result_tf for such a command is filled with the
content of the previous D2H Reg FIS which belongs to a previous
command, which can make the command incorrectly seen as failed.
* Patch updated to grab the whole TF + E_Status from PIO Setup FIS
instead of just E_Status as suggested by Robert Hancock.

different device IDs.
It is documented in Intel specification update 290745-025, currently

Intel IDE-R devices are part of the Intel AMT management setup. They don't
have any special configuration registers or settings so the ata_generic
driver will support them fully.
Rather than add a huge table of IDs for each chipset and keep sending in
new ones this patch autodetects them.

In libata, the non-EH code paths should always take and release
ap->lock explicitly when accessing hardware or shared data structures.
However, once EH is active, it's assumed that the port is owned by EH
and EH methods don't explicitly take ap->lock unless race from irq
handler or other code paths are expected. However, libata EH didn't
guarantee exclusion among EHs for ports of the same host. IOW,
multiple EHs may execute in parallel on multiple ports of the same
controller.
In many cases, especially in SATA, the ports are completely
independent of each other and this doesn't cause problems; however,
there are cases where different ports share the same resource, which
lead to obscure timing related bugs such as the one fixed by commit
213373cf (ata_piix: fix locking around SIDPR access).
This patch implements exclusion among EHs of the same host. When EH
begins, it acquires per-host EH ownership by calling ata_eh_acquire().
When EH finishes, the ownership is released by calling
ata_eh_release(). EH ownership is also released whenever the EH
thread goes to sleep from ata_msleep() or explicitly and reacquired
after waking up.
This ensures that while EH is actively accessing the hardware, it has
exclusive access to it while allowing EHs to interleave and progress
in parallel as they hit waiting stages, which dominate the time spent
in EH. This achieves cross-port EH exclusion without pervasive and
fragile changes while still allowing parallel EH for the most part.
This was first reported by yuanding02@gmail.com more than three years
ago in the following bugzilla. :-)

calls with ata_msleep() which take optional @ap in addition to the
duration. These will be used to implement EH exclusion.

Port multipliers can do DIPM on fan-out links fine. Implement support
for it. Tested w/ SIMG 57xx and marvell PMPs. Both the host and
fan-out links enter power save modes nicely.
SIMG 37xx and 47xx report link offline on SStatus causing EH to detach
the devices. Blacklisted.

The current LPM implementation has the following issues.
* Operation order isn't well thought-out. e.g. HIPM should be
configured after IPM in SControl is properly configured. Not the
other way around.
* Suspend/resume paths call ata_lpm_enable/disable() which must only
be called from EH context directly. Also, ata_lpm_enable/disable()
were called whether LPM was in use or not.
* Implementation is per-port when it should be per-link. As a result,
it can't be used for controllers with slave links or PMP.
* LPM state isn't managed consistently. After a link reset for
whatever reason including suspend/resume the actual LPM state would
be reset leaving ap->lpm_policy inconsistent.
* Generic/driver-specific logic boundary isn't clear. Currently,
libahci has to mangle stuff which libata EH proper should be
handling. This makes the implementation unnecessarily complex and
fragile.
* Tied to ALPM. Doesn't consider DIPM only cases and doesn't check
whether the device allows HIPM.
* Error handling isn't implemented.
Given the extent of mismatch with the rest of libata, I don't think
trying to fix it piecewise makes much sense. This patch reimplements
LPM support.
* The new implementation is per-link. The target policy is still
port-wide (ap->target_lpm_policy) but all the mechanisms and states
are per-link and integrate well with the rest of link abstraction
and can work with slave and PMP links.
* Core EH has proper control of LPM state. LPM state is reconfigured
when and only when reconfiguration is necessary. It makes sure that
LPM state is reset when probing for new device on the link.
Controller agnostic logic is now implemented in libata EH proper and
driver implementation only has to deal with controller specifics.
* Proper error handling. LPM config failure is attributed to the
device on the link and LPM is disabled for the link if it fails
repeatedly.
* ops->enable/disable_pm() are replaced with single ops->set_lpm()
which takes @policy and @hints. This simplifies driver specific
implementation.

Link power management related symbols are in confusing state w/ mixed
usages of lpm, ipm and pm. This patch cleans up lpm related symbols
and sysfs show/store functions as follows.
* lpm states - NOT_AVAILABLE, MIN_POWER, MAX_PERFORMANCE and
MEDIUM_POWER are renamed to ATA_LPM_UNKNOWN and
ATA_LPM_{MIN|MAX|MED}_POWER.
* Pre/postfixes are unified to lpm.
* sysfs show/store functions for link_power_management_policy were
curiously named get/put and unnecessarily complex. Renamed to
show/store and simplified.

This build error showed up in linux-next tag next-20100820 for ia64:
WARNING: vmlinux.o(.init.text+0x4a952): Section mismatch in reference from the function ata_init() to the function .exit.text:ata_sff_exit()
The function __init ata_init() references
a function __exit ata_sff_exit().
This is often seen when error handling in the init function
uses functionality in the exit path.
The fix is often to remove the __exit annotation of
ata_sff_exit() so it may be used outside an exit section.
Sure enough, dropping the __exit fixes the problem.

"Native 4K" SATA device.
When I started working on this, I didn't know Matthew Wilcox had

And bugs are almost certainly mine.
Lastly, the patch has been tested with a native 4K 'Engineering
Sample' drive provided by Hitachi GST.

Currently, sata_fsl, mv and nv call ata_qc_complete() multiple times
from their interrupt handlers to indicate completion of NCQ commands.
This limits the visibility the libata core layer has into how commands
are being executed and completed, which is necessary to support IRQ
expecting in generic way. libata already has an interface to complete
multiple commands at once - ata_qc_complete_multiple() which ahci and
sata_sil24 already use.
This patch updates the three drivers to use ata_qc_complete_multiple()
too and updates comments on ata_qc_complete[_multiple]() regarding
their usages with NCQ completions. This change not only provides
better visibility into command execution to the core layer but also
simplifies low level drivers.
* sata_fsl: It already builds done_mask. Conversion is straight
forward.
* sata_mv: mv_process_crpb_response() no longer checks for illegal
completions, it just returns whether the tag is completed or not.
mv_process_crpb_entries() builds done_mask from it and passes it to
ata_qc_complete_multiple() which will check for illegal completions.
* sata_nv adma: Similar to sata_mv. nv_adma_check_cpb() now just
returns the tag status and nv_adma_interrupt() builds done_mask from
it and passes it to ata_qc_complete_multiple().
* sata_nv swncq: It already builds done_mask. Drop unnecessary
illegal transition checks and call ata_qc_complete_multiple().
In the long run, it might be a good idea to make ata_qc_complete()
whine if called when multiple NCQ commands are in flight.

Add WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag which currently maps to WQ_RESCUER, mark
WQ_RESCUER as internal and replace all external WQ_RESCUER usages to
WQ_MEM_RECLAIM.
This makes the API users express the intent of the workqueue instead
of indicating the internal mechanism used to guarantee forward
progress. This is also to make it cleaner to add more semantics to
WQ_MEM_RECLAIM. For example, if deemed necessary, memory reclaim
workqueues can be made highpri.
This patch doesn't introduce any functional change.

libata depends on scsi_host_template for module reference counting and
sht's should be owned by each low level driver. During libahci split,
the sht was left with libahci.ko leaving the actual low level drivers
not reference counted. This made ahci and ahci_platform always
unloadable even while they're being actively used.
Fix it by defining AHCI_SHT() macro in ahci.h and defining a sht for
each low level ahci driver.

Keep track of the link on the which the current request is in progress.
It allows support of links behind port multiplier.
Not all libata-sff is PMP compliant. Code for native BMDMA controller
does not take in accound PMP.

For some mysterious reason, certain hardware reacts badly to usual EH
actions while the system is going for suspend. As the devices won't
be needed until the system is resumed, ask EH to skip usual autopsy
and recovery and proceed directly to suspend.

ahci_do_softreset() compared the current time and deadline in reverse
when calculating timeout for SRST issue. The result is that if
@deadline is in future, SRST is issued with 0 timeout, which hasn't
caused any problem because it later waits for DRDY with the correct
timeout. If deadline is already exceeded by the time SRST is about to
be issued, the timeout calculation underflows and if the device
doesn't respond, timeout doesn't trigger for a _very_ long time.
Reverse the incorrect comparison order.

Remove harmful BUG_ON() from ata_bmdma_qc_issue(),
as it casts too wide of a net and breaks sata_mv.
It also crashes the kernel while doing the BUG_ON().
There's already a WARN_ON_ONCE() further down to catch
the case of POLLING for a BMDMA operation.
