So, the first helper is the one shortening a variable/function section
attribute, from, for instance:
char _license[] __attribute__((section("license"), used)) = "GPL";
to:
char _license[] SEC("license") = "GPL";
Convert empty.c to that and it becomes:
# cat ~acme/lib/examples/perf/bpf/empty.c
#include <bpf.h>
char _license[] SEC("license") = "GPL";
int _version SEC("version") = LINUX_VERSION_CODE;

The first one is the bare minimum that bpf infrastructure accepts before
it expects actual events to be set up:
$ cat tools/perf/examples/bpf/empty.c
char _license[] __attribute__((section("license"), used)) = "GPL";
int _version __attribute__((section("version"), used)) = LINUX_VERSION_CODE;
$
If you remove that "version" line, then it will be refused with:
# perf trace -e tools/perf/examples/bpf/empty.c
event syntax error: 'tools/perf/examples/bpf/empty.c'
\___ Failed to load tools/perf/examples/bpf/empty.c from source: 'version' section incorrect or lost
(add -v to see detail)
Run 'perf list' for a list of valid events
Usage: perf trace [<options>] [<command>]

or: perf trace record [<options>] [<command>]
or: perf trace record [<options>] -- <command> [<options>]
-e, --event <event> event/syscall selector. use 'perf list' to list available events
#
The next ones will, step by step, show simple filters, then the needs
for headers will be made clear, it will be put in place and tested with
new examples, rinse, repeat.
Back to using this first one to test the perf+bpf infrastructure:
If we run it will fail, as no functions are present connecting with,
say, a tracepoint or a function using the kprobes or uprobes
infrastructure:
# perf trace -e tools/perf/examples/bpf/empty.c
WARNING: event parser found nothing

For libclang, some distro packages provide static libraries (.a) while
some provide shared libraries (.so). Currently, perf code can only be
linked with static libraries. This makes perf build possible for both
cases.

Currently a number of Makefiles break when used with toolchains that
pass extra flags in CC and other cross-compile related variables (such
as --sysroot).
Thus we get this error when we use a toolchain that puts --sysroot in
the CC var:
~/src/linux/tools$ make iio
[snip]
iio_event_monitor.c:18:10: fatal error: unistd.h: No such file or directory
#include <unistd.h>
^~~~~~~~~~
This occurs because we clobber several env vars related to
cross-compiling with lines like this:
CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc
Although this will point to a valid cross-compiler, we lose any extra
flags that might exist in the CC variable, which can break toolchains
that rely on them (for example, those that use --sysroot).
This easily shows up using a Yocto SDK:
$ . [snip]/sdk/environment-setup-cortexa8hf-neon-poky-linux-gnueabi
$ echo $CC
arm-poky-linux-gnueabi-gcc -march=armv7-a -mfpu=neon -mfloat-abi=hard
-mcpu=cortex-a8
--sysroot=[snip]/sdk/sysroots/cortexa8hf-neon-poky-linux-gnueabi
$ echo $CROSS_COMPILE
arm-poky-linux-gnueabi-
$ echo ${CROSS_COMPILE}gcc
krm-poky-linux-gnueabi-gcc
Although arm-poky-linux-gnueabi-gcc is a cross-compiler, we've lost the
--sysroot and other flags that enable us to find the right libraries to
link against, so we can't find unistd.h and other libraries and headers.
Normally with the --sysroot flag we would find unistd.h in the sdk
directory in the sysroot:
$ find [snip]/sdk/sysroots -path '*/usr/include/unistd.h'
[snip]/sdk/sysroots/cortexa8hf-neon-poky-linux-gnueabi/usr/include/unistd.h
The perf Makefile adds CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc if and only if CC is not
already set, and it compiles correctly with the above toolchain.
So, generalize the logic that perf uses in the common Makefile and
remove the manual CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc lines from each Makefile.
Note that this patch does not fix cross-compile for all the tools (some
have other bugs), but it does fix it for all except usb and acpi, which
still have other unrelated issues.
I tested both with and without the patch on native and cross-build and
there appear to be no regressions.

Introduce a script that generates a mapping of errno numbers to their
names for each architecture that is supported by perf (i.e. has a
subdirectory in tools/perf/arch/).
The errno mapping is generated as part of the trace beautifiers and can
be used by including the trace/beauty/arch_errno_names.c file. Then,
use arch_syscalls__strerrno() to look up an errno value to obtain the
errno name (e.g. ENOENT) for a particular architecture.

For some unknown reason there is no entry in tracefs's syscalls for
kcmp, i.e. no tracefs/events/syscalls/sys_{enter,exit}_kcmp, so we need
to provide a data dictionary for the fields.
To beautify the 'type' argument we automatically generate a strarray
from tools/include/uapi/kcmp.h, the idx1 and idx2 args, nowadays used
only if type == KCMP_FILE, are masked for all the other types and a
lookup is made for the thread and fd to show the path, if possible,
getting it from the probe:vfs_getname if in place or from procfs, races
allowing.
A system wide strace like tracing session, with callchains shows just
one user so far in this fedora 25 machine:
# perf trace --max-stack 5 -e kcmp
<SNIP>
1502914.400 ( 0.001 ms): systemd/1 kcmp(pid1: 1 (systemd), pid2: 1 (systemd), type: FILE, idx1: 271<socket:[4723475]>, idx2: 25<socket:[4788686]>) = -1 ENOSYS Function not implemented

The backtraces seem to agree this is really kcmp(), but this system
doesn't have the sys_kcmp(), bummer:
# uname -a

So systemd uses it, good fedora kernel config has it:

This is one more case where the way that syscall parameter values are
defined in kernel headers are easy to parse using a shell script that
will then generate the string table that gets used by the madvise
'behaviour' argument beautifier.
This way as soon as the header syncronization mechanism in perf's build
system detects a change in a copy of a kernel ABI header and that file
is syncronized, we get 'perf trace' updated automagically.
So, when we syncronize this:
Warning: Kernel ABI header at 'tools/include/uapi/asm-generic/mman-common.h' differs from latest version at 'include/uapi/asm-generic/mman-common.h'
We'll get these:
#define MADV_WIPEONFORK 18 /* Zero memory on fork, child only */
#define MADV_KEEPONFORK 19 /* Undo MADV_WIPEONFORK */

Reuse 'mprotect' beautifiers for 'pkey_mprotect'.
System wide tracing pkey_alloc, pkey_free and pkey_mprotect calls, with

# perf trace -e pkey_alloc,pkey_mprotect,pkey_free --max-stack=5

syscall (/usr/lib64/libc-2.25.so)
pkey_free (/home/acme/c/pkey)
The tools/include/uapi/asm-generic/mman-common.h file is used to find
the access rights defines for the pkey_alloc syscall second argument.
Since we have the detector of changes for the tools/include header files
versus its kernel origin (include/uapi/asm-generic/mman-common.h), we'll
get whatever new flag appears for that argument automatically.
This method should be used in other cases where it is easy to generate
those flags tables because the header has properly namespaced defines
like PKEY_DISABLE_ACCESS and PKEY_DISABLE_WRITE.

We can't pass --dynamic-list list into static build anymore, because
compilers starts to scream about that. Fedora 26 started to fail build
with following error:
$ make LDFLAGS=-static
...
/usr/bin/ld: dynamic STT_GNU_IFUNC symbol `strcmp' with pointer equality in `/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/7/../../../../lib64/libc.a(strcmp.o
+)' can not be used when making an executable; recompile with -fPIE and relink with -pie
There's no sense for --dynamic-list in static build, because there's no
.dynsym table in static binary. Consequently the traceevent plugins have
never worked with static build, but it was quietly passed by.
To fix this in future I think we should add support to compile plugins
within the perf binary directly for static build.

This time we try a new approach, using a copy of uapi/sound/asound.h we
auto generate the string tables, then include it in the ioctl cmd

The goal is to allow users to override linking of libraries that
were automatically added to PERFLIBS.
EXCLUDE_EXTLIBS contains linker flags to be removed from LIBS
while EXTRA_PERFLIBS contains linker flags to be added.
My use case is to force certain library to be build statically,
e.g. for libelf:
EXCLUDE_EXTLIBS=-lelf EXTRA_PERFLIBS=path/libelf.a

With commit: 0a943cb10c (tools build: Add HOSTARCH Makefile variable)
when building for ARCH=x86_64, ARCH=x86_64 is passed to perf instead of
ARCH=x86, so the perf build process searchs header files from
tools/arch/x86_64/include, which doesn't exist.
The following build failure is seen:
In file included from util/event.c:2:0:
tools/include/uapi/linux/mman.h:4:27: fatal error: uapi/asm/mman.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
Fix this issue by using SRCARCH instead of ARCH in perf, just like the
main kernel Makefile and tools/objtool's.

The install command for libperf-jvmti.so does not check if libdir exists
before installing. This means that when the install command is run:
install libperf-jvmti.so '/tmp/test_root/usr/lib64';
libperf-jvmti.so will get installed to /usr/lib64 as a file and break
further installation. Fix this by ensuring the directory gets created
first.

The fixdep tool needs to be built before everything else, because it fixes
every object dependency file.
We handle this currently by making all objects to depend on fixdep, which is
error prone and is easily forgotten when new object is added.
Instead of this, this patch force fixdep tool to be built as the first target
in the separate make session. This way we don't need to handle extra fixdep
dependencies and we are certain there's no fixdep race with any parallel make
job.

This is a modified version of an earlier patch by Andi Kleen.
We expect architectures to create JSON files describing the performance
monitoring (PMU) events that each CPU model/family of the architecture
supports.
Following is an example of the JSON file entry for an x86 event:
[
...
{
"EventCode": "0x00",
"UMask": "0x01",
"EventName": "INST_RETIRED.ANY",
"BriefDescription": "Instructions retired from execution.",
"PublicDescription": "Instructions retired from execution.",
"Counter": "Fixed counter 1",
"CounterHTOff": "Fixed counter 1",
"SampleAfterValue": "2000003",
"SampleAfterValue": "2000003",
"MSRIndex": "0",
"MSRValue": "0",
"TakenAlone": "0",
"CounterMask": "0",
"Invert": "0",
"AnyThread": "0",
"EdgeDetect": "0",
"PEBS": "0",
"PRECISE_STORE": "0",
"Errata": "null",
"Offcore": "0"
},
...
]
All the PMU events supported by a CPU model/family must be grouped into
"topics" such as "Pipelining", "Floating-point", "Virtual-memory" etc.
All events belonging to a topic must be placed in a separate JSON file
(eg: "Pipelining.json") and all the topic JSON files for a CPU model must
be in a separate directory.
Eg: for the CPU model "Silvermont_core":
$ ls tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/Silvermont_core
Floating-point.json
Memory.json
Other.json
Pipelining.json
Virtualmemory.json
Finally, to allow multiple CPU models to share a single set of JSON files,
architectures must provide a mapping between a model and its set of events:
$ grep Silvermont tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/mapfile.csv
GenuineIntel-6-4D,V13,Silvermont_core,core
GenuineIntel-6-4C,V13,Silvermont_core,core
which maps each CPU, identified by [vendor, family, model, version, type]
to a directory of JSON files. Thus two (or more) CPU models support the
set of PMU events listed in the directory.
tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/Silvermont_core/
Given this organization of files, the program, jevents:
- locates all JSON files for each CPU-model of the architecture,
- parses all JSON files for the CPU-model and generates a C-style
"PMU-events table" (pmu-events.c) for the model
- locates a mapfile for the architecture
- builds a global table, mapping each model of CPU to the corresponding
PMU-events table.
The 'pmu-events.c' is generated when building perf and added to libperf.a.
The global table pmu_events_map[] table in this pmu-events.c will be used
in perf in a follow-on patch.
If the architecture does not have any JSON files or there is an error in
processing them, an empty mapping file is created. This would allow the
build of perf to proceed even if we are not able to provide aliases for
events.
The parser for JSON files allows parsing Intel style JSON event files. This
allows to use an Intel event list directly with perf. The Intel event lists
can be quite large and are too big to store in unswappable kernel memory.
The conversion from JSON to C-style is straight forward. The parser knows
(very little) Intel specific information, and can be easily extended to
handle fields for other CPUs.
The parser code is partially shared with an independent parsing library,
which is 2-clause BSD licensed. To avoid any conflicts I marked those
files as BSD licensed too. As part of perf they become GPLv2.
Committer notes:
Fixes:
1) Limit maxfds to 512 to avoid nftd() segfaulting on alloca() with a
big rlim_max, as in docker containers - acme
2) Make jevents a hostprog, supporting cross compilation - jolsa
3) Use HOSTCC for jevents final step - acme
4) Define _GNU_SOURCE for asprintf, as we can't use CC's EXTRA_CFLAGS,
that has to have --sysroot on the Android NDK 24 - acme
5) Removed $(srctree)/tools/perf/pmu-events/pmu-events.c from the
'clean' target, it is generated on $(OUTPUT)pmu-events/pmu-events.c,
which is already taken care of in the original patch - acme

It is a requirement from the perf TODO list[1]:
''The feature tests should be performed only when a file that needs those
tests, or at least only when some .c or .h file will be rebuilt. An
initial step would be for 'make install-doc' not to run the feature
tests, there it is not needed at all.''
By adding 'install-doc' to the NON_CONFIG_TARGETS, it will skip running
the feature tests for such target. The Auto-detecting system features

$ make install-doc

We shouldn't use headers from the kernel sources directly, instead we
should use the system's headers or in cases where that isn't possible,
like with perf_event.h, where the introduction of kernel features such
as perf_event_attr.{write_backwards,sample_max_stack} and
PERF_EVENT_IOC_PAUSE_OUTPUT take some time to become available in
/usr/include/linux/perf_event.h we need a copy.
Do it and check for source code drift, emitting a warning when changes

We used libaudit to map ids to syscall names and vice-versa, but that
imposes a delay in supporting new syscalls, having to wait for libaudit
to get those new syscalls on its tables.
To remove that delay, for x86_64 initially, grab a copy of
arch/x86/entry/syscalls/syscall_64.tbl and use it to generate those
tables.
Syscalls currently not available in audit-libs:

There's a bug in LLVM that it can generate unneeded relocation
information. See [1] and [2]. Libbpf should check the target section of
a relocation symbol.
This patch adds a testcase which references a global variable (BPF
doesn't support global variables). Before fixing libbpf, the new test
case can be loaded into kernel, the global variable acts like the first
map. It is incorrect.

Since we're moving files anyway, go ahead and rename 'exec_cmd.*' to

Currently we have the install-traceevent-plugins target being dependent
on $(LIBTRACEEVENT), which will actualy not build any plugin. So the
install-traceevent-plugins target itself will try to build plugins,
but..
Plugins built is also triggered by perf build itself via
libtraceevent_plugins target.
This might cause a race having one make thread removing temp files from
another and result in above error. Fixing this by having proper plugins
build dependency before installing plugins.

By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build
libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set.
The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent
are wired into Makefile.perf.
MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'.
Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make.
The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and
FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in
/path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except
when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel.
Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF
support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check
failed.
tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf
files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags.

kernel x86 instruction decoder is copied for this.
This essentially provides intel_pt_get_insn() which takes a binary

Commit 5ef7bbb09f ("perf tools: Allow to specify custom linker
command") was meant to enable usage non $(CROSS_COMPILE)ld linker during
perf building.
But implementation didn't take into account the fact that LD is a
pre-defined variable in GNU Make. I.e. it is always defined.
Which means there's no point to check "LD ?= ..." because it will never
succeed.
And so LD will be either that explicitly passed to make like this:
------->8-------
make LD=path_to_my_ld ...
------->8-------
or default value, which is host's "ld".
Latter leads to failure of cross-linkage because instead of cross linker
"$(CROSS_COMPILE)ld" host's "ld" is used.
Fortunately there's a way to do correct substitution of $(CROSS_COMPILE)ld
with user defined LD on command-line.
As a reference was used implementation in "tools/lib/traceevent/Makefile".
Build tested for x86_64 and ARC.
Thanks Jiri for this hint.

Commit e3d09ec812 ("tools lib traceevent:
Export dynamic symbols used by traceevent plugins") adds libtraceevent
dynamic list directly into LDFLAGS, which makes all targets depend on
that list through LDFLAGS.
This is not good since some of targets like libgtk.so doesn't use plugin
at all, but require the existance of that list because of linker
options.
This patch isolates the -Xlink option into LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC_LIST_LDFLAGS,
makes only perf and perf.so use it.

Traceevent plugins need dynamic symbols exported from libtraceevent.a,
otherwise a dlopen error will occur during plugins loading.
This patch uses dynamic-list-file to export dynamic symbols which will
be used in plugins to perf executable.
The problem is covered up if feature-libpython is enabled, because
PYTHON_EMBED_LDOPTS contains '-Xlinker --export-dynamic' which adds all
symbols to the dynamic symbol table. So we should reproduce the problem
by setting NO_LIBPYTHON=1.

Disabling libbabeltrace check by default and replacing the
NO_LIBBABELTRACE make variable with LIBBABELTRACE.
Users wanting the libbabeltrace feature need to build via:
$ make LIBBABELTRACE=1
The reason for this is that the libababeltrace interface we use (version
1.3) hasn't been packaged/released yet, thus the failing feature check
only slows down build and confuses other (non CTF) developers.
