"paca->soft_enabled" is used as a flag to mask some of interrupts.
Currently supported flags values and their details:
soft_enabled MSR[EE]
0 0 Disabled (PMI and HMI not masked)
1 1 Enabled
"paca->soft_enabled" is initialized to 1 to make the interripts as
enabled. arch_local_irq_disable() will toggle the value when
interrupts needs to disbled. At this point, the interrupts are not
actually disabled, instead, interrupt vector has code to check for the
flag and mask it when it occurs. By "mask it", it update interrupt
paca->irq_happened and return. arch_local_irq_restore() is called to
re-enable interrupts, which checks and replays interrupts if any
occured.
Now, as mentioned, current logic doesnot mask "performance monitoring
interrupts" and PMIs are implemented as NMI. But this patchset depends
on local_irq_* for a successful local_* update. Meaning, mask all
possible interrupts during local_* update and replay them after the
update.
So the idea here is to reserve the "paca->soft_enabled" logic. New
values and details:
soft_enabled MSR[EE]
1 0 Disabled (PMI and HMI not masked)
0 1 Enabled
Reason for the this change is to create foundation for a third mask
value "0x2" for "soft_enabled" to add support to mask PMIs. When
->soft_enabled is set to a value "3", PMI interrupts are mask and when
set to a value of "1", PMI are not mask. With this patch also extends
soft_enabled as interrupt disable mask.
Current flags are renamed from IRQ_[EN?DIS}ABLED to
IRQS_ENABLED and IRQS_DISABLED.
Patch also fixes the ptrace call to force the user to see the softe
value to be alway 1. Reason being, even though userspace has no
business knowing about softe, it is part of pt_regs. Like-wise in
signal context.

In TLB miss handlers, updating the perf counter is only useful
when performing a perf analysis. As it has a noticeable overhead,
let's only do it when needed.
In order to do so, the exit of the miss handlers will be patched
when starting/stopping 'perf': the first register restore
instruction of each exit point will be replaced by a jump to
the counting code.
Once this is done, CONFIG_PPC_8xx_PERF_EVENT becomes useless as
this feature doesn't add any overhead.

imc_common_cpuhp_mem_free() is the common function for all
IMC (In-memory Collection counters) domains to unregister cpuhotplug
callback and free memory. Since kfree of memory allocated for
nest-imc (per_nest_pmu_arr) is in the common code, all
domains (core/nest/thread) can do the kfree in the failure case.
This could potentially create a call trace as shown below, where
core(/thread/nest) imc pmu initialization fails and in the failure
path imc_common_cpuhp_mem_free() free the memory(per_nest_pmu_arr),
which is allocated by successfully registered nest units.
The call trace is generated in a scenario where core-imc
initialization is made to fail and a cpuhotplug is performed in a p9
system. During cpuhotplug ppc_nest_imc_cpu_offline() tries to access
per_nest_pmu_arr, which is already freed by core-imc.

While registering the cpuhotplug callbacks for nest-imc, if we fail in

This call trace is generated since in the ppc_nest_imc_cpu_offline()

While registering the cpuhoplug callbacks for core-imc, if we fails
in the cpuhotplug online path for any random core (either because opal call to
initialize the core-imc counters fails or because memory allocation fails for
that core), ppc_core_imc_cpu_offline() will get invoked for other cpus who
successfully returned from cpuhotplug online path.
But in the ppc_core_imc_cpu_offline() path we are trying to migrate the event
context, when core-imc counters are not even initialized. Thus creating the
above stack dump.
Add a check to see if core-imc counters are enabled or not in the cpuhotplug
offline path before migrating the context to handle this failing scenario.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

When setting nr_cpus=1, we observed a crash in IMC code during boot
due to a missing allocation: basically, IMC code is taking the number
of threads into account in imc_mem_init() and if we manually set
nr_cpus for a value that is not multiple of the number of threads per
core, an integer division in that function will discard the decimal
portion, leading IMC to not allocate one mem_info struct. This causes
a NULL pointer dereference later, on is_core_imc_mem_inited().
This patch just rounds that division up, fixing the bug.

In the hv-24x7 code there is a function memord() which tries to
implement a sort function return -1, 0, 1. However one of the
conditions is incorrect, such that it can never be true, because we
will have already returned.
I don't believe there is a bug in practice though, because the
comparisons are an optimisation prior to calling memcmp().
Fix it by swapping the second comparision, so it can be true.

nest_pmu_cpumask_init() makes an OPAL call to stop the engine. And if
the OPAL call fails, imc_common_cpuhp_mem_free() is invoked to cleanup
memory and cpuhotplug setup.
But when cleaning up the attribute group, we are dereferencing the
attribute element array without checking whether the backing element
is not NULL. This causes the kernel panic.
Add a check for the backing element prior to dereferencing the

Nest/core pmu units are enabled only when it is used. A reference count is
maintained for the events which uses the nest/core pmu units. Currently in
*_imc_counters_release function a WARN() is used for notification of any
underflow of ref count.
The case where event ref count hit a negative value is, when perf session is
started, followed by offlining of all cpus in a given core.
i.e. in cpuhotplug offline path ppc_core_imc_cpu_offline() function set the
ref->count to zero, if the current cpu which is about to offline is the last
cpu in a given core and make an OPAL call to disable the engine in that core.
And on perf session termination, perf->destroy (core_imc_counters_release) will
first decrement the ref->count for this core and based on the ref->count value
an opal call is made to disable the core-imc engine.
Now, since cpuhotplug path already clears the ref->count for core and disabled
the engine, perf->destroy() decrementing again at event termination make it
negative which in turn fires the WARN_ON. The same happens for nest units.
Add a check to see if the reference count is alreday zero, before decrementing
the count, so that the ref count will not hit a negative value.

Nothing really major this release, despite quite a lot of activity. Just lots of
things all over the place.
Some things of note include:
- Access via perf to a new type of PMU (IMC) on Power9, which can count both
core events as well as nest unit events (Memory controller etc).
- Optimisations to the radix MMU TLB flushing, mostly to avoid unnecessary Page
Walk Cache (PWC) flushes when the structure of the tree is not changing.
- Reworks/cleanups of do_page_fault() to modernise it and bring it closer to
other architectures where possible.
- Rework of our page table walking so that THP updates only need to send IPIs
to CPUs where the affected mm has run, rather than all CPUs.
- The size of our vmalloc area is increased to 56T on 64-bit hash MMU systems.
This avoids problems with the percpu allocator on systems with very sparse
NUMA layouts.
- STRICT_KERNEL_RWX support on PPC32.
- A new sched domain topology for Power9, to capture the fact that pairs of
cores may share an L2 cache.
- Power9 support for VAS, which is a new mechanism for accessing coprocessors,
and initial support for using it with the NX compression accelerator.
- Major work on the instruction emulation support, adding support for many new
instructions, and reworking it so it can be used to implement the emulation
needed to fixup alignment faults.
- Support for guests under PowerVM to use the Power9 XIVE interrupt controller.
And probably that many things again that are almost as interesting, but I had to
keep the list short. Plus the usual fixes and cleanups as always.

For understanding how the workload maps to memory channels and hardware
behavior, it's very important to collect address maps with physical
addresses. For example, 3D XPoint access can only be found by filtering
the physical address.
Add a new sample type for physical address.
perf already has a facility to collect data virtual address. This patch
introduces a function to convert the virtual address to physical address.
The function is quite generic and can be extended to any architecture as
long as a virtual address is provided.
- For kernel direct mapping addresses, virt_to_phys is used to convert
the virtual addresses to physical address.
- For user virtual addresses, __get_user_pages_fast is used to walk the
pages tables for user physical address.
- This does not work for vmalloc addresses right now. These are not
resolved, but code to do that could be added.
The new sample type requires collecting the virtual address. The
virtual address will not be output unless SAMPLE_ADDR is applied.
For security, the physical address can only be exposed to root or
privileged user.

Bring in the commit to rename find_linux_pte_or_hugepte() which touches
arch and KVM code, and might need to be merged with the kvmppc tree to
avoid conflicts.
Add newer helpers to make the function usage simpler. It is always
recommended to use find_current_mm_pte() for walking the page table.
If we cannot use find_current_mm_pte(), it should be documented why
the said usage of __find_linux_pte() is safe against a parallel THP
split.
For now we have KVM code using __find_linux_pte(). This is because kvm
code ends up calling __find_linux_pte() in real mode with MSR_EE=0 but
with PACA soft_enabled = 1. We may want to fix that later and make
sure we keep the MSR_EE and PACA soft_enabled in sync. When we do that
we can switch kvm to use find_linux_pte().

nest_imc_refc is a reference count struct, used to track number of
active perf sessions using the nest units.
Currently the code accesses nest_imc_refc using node_id, which is
incorrect, the array is indexed by node number. Meaning in the case of
sparse node ids we index off the end of the array.
Fix it to use get_nest_pmu_ref() which uses the existing per-cpu

are not showing up properly. eg. lscpu output:
NUMA node0 CPU(s): 0-15
NUMA node8 CPU(s): 16-31
Nest event values on such systems can be counted on CPUs <= 15:
$./perf stat -e 'nest_powerbus0_imc/PM_PB_CYC/' -C 0-14 -I 1000 sleep 1000
# time counts unit events
1.000294577 30,17,24,42,880 nest_powerbus0_imc/PM_PB_CYC/
But not on CPUs >= 16:
$./perf stat -e 'nest_powerbus0_imc/PM_PB_CYC/' -C 16-28 -I 1000 sleep 1000
# time counts unit events
1.000049902 <not supported> nest_powerbus0_imc/PM_PB_CYC/
This is because, when fetching the reference count, the node id (which
may be sparse) is used as the array index, not the node number (which
is 0 based and contiguous).
Fix it by using the node number as the array index.
$./perf stat -e 'nest_powerbus0_imc/PM_PB_CYC/' -C 16-28 -I 1000 sleep 1000

There are some hardware events on Power systems which only count when
the processor is not idle, and there are some fixed-function counters
which count such events. For example, the "run cycles" event counts
cycles when the processor is not idle. If the user asks to count
cycles, we can use "run cycles" if this is a per-task event, since the
processor is running when the task is running, by definition. We can't
use "run cycles" if the user asks for "cycles" on a system-wide
counter.
Currently in power8 this check is done using PPMU_ONLY_COUNT_RUN flag
in power8_get_alternatives() function. Based on the flag, events are
switched if needed. This function should also be enabled in power9, so
factor out the code to isa207_get_alternatives().

Commit 20dd4c624d ('powerpc/perf: Fix SDAR_MODE value for continous
sampling on Power9') set the default sdar_mode value in MMCRA[SDAR_MODE]
to be used as 0b01 (Update on TLB miss). And this value is set if sdar_mode
from event is zero, or we are in continous sampling mode in power9 dd1.
But it is preferred to have the sdar_mode value for power9 as
0b10 (Update on dcache miss) for better sampling updates instead
of 0b01 (Update on TLB miss).
From Anton:
Using a bandwidth test case with a 1MB footprint, I profiled cycles and
chose TLB updates of the SDAR:
$ perf record -d -e r000400000000001E:u ./bw2001 1M
^
SDAR TLB
$ perf report -D | grep PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE | sed 's/.*addr: //' | sort -u | wc -l
4
I get 4 unique addresses. If I ran with dcache misses:
$ perf record -d -e r000800000000001E:u ./bw2001 1M
^
SDAR dcache miss
$ perf report -D|grep PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE| sed 's/.*addr: //'|sort -u | wc -l
5217
I get 5217 unique addresses. No surprises here, but it does show why
TLB misses is the wrong event to default to - we get very little useful
information out of it.

In case of continous sampling (non-marked), the code currently
sets MMCRA[SDAR_MODE] to 0b01 (Update on TLB miss) for Power9 DD1.
On DD2 and later it copies the sdar_mode value from the event code,
which for most events is 0b00 (No updates).
However we must set a non-zero value for SDAR_MODE when doing
continuous sampling, so honor the event code, unless it's zero, in
which case we use use 0b01 (Update on TLB miss).

Another problem in that loop is that it sets h24x7hw->events[i] to NULL.

is not guaranteed to be true. We need to leave the event in the array so
that we don't dereference a NULL pointer in case more than one result maps

This patch has been reworked since RFC version. In the RFC, this patch
was preceded by a patch clearing MSR RI for all PPC32 at all time at
exception prologs. Now MSR RI clearing is done only when this 8xx perf
events functionality is compiled in, it is therefore limited to 8xx
and merged inside this patch.
Other main changes have been to take into account detailed review from
Peter Zijlstra. The instructions counter has been reworked to behave
as a free running counter like the three other counters.
The 8xx has no PMU, however some events can be emulated by other means.
This patch implements the following events (as reported by 'perf list'):
cpu-cycles OR cycles [Hardware event]
instructions [Hardware event]
dTLB-load-misses [Hardware cache event]
iTLB-load-misses [Hardware cache event]
'cycles' event is implemented using the timebase clock. Timebase clock
corresponds to CPU clock divided by 16, so number of cycles is
approximatly 16 times the number of TB ticks
On the 8xx, TLB misses are handled by software. It is therefore
easy to count all TLB misses each time the TLB miss exception is
called.
'instructions' is calculated by using instruction watchpoint counter.
This patch sets counter A to count instructions at address greater
than 0, hence we count all instructions executed while MSR RI bit is
set. The counter is set to the maximum which is 0xffff. Every 65535
instructions, debug instruction breakpoint exception fires. The
exception handler increments a counter in memory which then
represent the upper part of the instruction counter. We therefore
end up with a 48 bits counter. In order to avoid unnecessary overhead
while no perf event is active, this counter is started when the first
event referring to this counter is added, and the counter is stopped
when the last event referring to it is deleted. In order to properly
support breakpoint exceptions, MSR RI bit has to be unset in exception
epilogs in order to avoid breakpoint exceptions during critical
sections during changes to SRR0 and SRR1 would be problematic.
All counters are handled as free running counters.

We will use it to count how many addresses are in the entry->ip[] array,
excluding PERF_CONTEXT_{KERNEL,USER,etc} entries, so that we can really
return the number of entries specified by the user via the relevant
sysctl, kernel.perf_event_max_contexts, or via the per event
perf_event_attr.sample_max_stack knob.
This way we keep the perf_sample->ip_callchain->nr meaning, that is the
number of entries, be it real addresses or PERF_CONTEXT_ entries, while
honouring the max_stack knobs, i.e. the end result will be max_stack
entries if we have at least that many entries in a given stack trace.

The default remains 127, which is good for most cases, and not even hit
most of the time, but then for some cases, as reported by Brendan, 1024+
deep frames are appearing on the radar for things like groovy, ruby.
And in some workloads putting a _lower_ cap on this may make sense. One
that is per event still needs to be put in place tho.
The new file is:
# cat /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack
127
Chaging it:
# echo 256 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack
# cat /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack
256
But as soon as there is some event using callchains we get:
# echo 512 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_stack
-bash: echo: write error: Device or resource busy
#
Because we only allocate the callchain percpu data structures when there
is a user, which allows for changing the max easily, its just a matter
of having no callchain users at that point.

The Physical Core events of the 24x7 PMU can be monitored across various
domains (physical core, vcpu home core, vcpu home node etc). For each of
these core events, we currently create multiple events in sysfs, one for
each domain the event can be monitored in. These events are distinguished
by their suffixes like __PHYS_CORE, __VCPU_HOME_CORE etc.
Rather than creating multiple such entries, we could let the user specify
make 'domain' index a required parameter and let the user specify a value
for it (like they currently specify the core index).
$ cat /sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/events/HPM_CCYC
domain=?,offset=0x98,core=?,lpar=0x0
$ perf stat -C 0 -e hv_24x7/HPM_CCYC,domain=2,core=1/ true
(the 'domain=?' and 'core=?' in sysfs tell perf tool to enforce them as
required parameters).
This simplifies the interface and allows users to identify events by the
name specified in the catalog (User can determine the domain index by
referring to '/sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/interface/domains').
Eliminating the event suffix eliminates several functions and simplifies
code.
Note that Physical Chip events can only be monitored in the chip domain
so those events have the domain set to 1 (rather than =?) and users don't
need to specify the domain index for the Chip events.
$ cat /sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/events/PM_XLINK_CYCLES

For 24x7 counters, perf displays the raw value of the 24x7 counter, which
is a monotonically increasing value.
perf stat -C 0 -e \
'hv_24x7/HPM_0THRD_NON_IDLE_CCYC__PHYS_CORE,core=1/' \
sleep 1
Performance counter stats for 'CPU(s) 0':
9,105,403,170 hv_24x7/HPM_0THRD_NON_IDLE_CCYC__PHYS_CORE,core=1/
0.000425751 seconds time elapsed
In the typical usage of 'perf stat' this counter value is not as useful
as the _change_ in the counter value over the duration of the application.
Have h_24x7_event_init() set the event's prev_count to the raw value of
the 24x7 counter at the time of initialization. When the application
terminates, hv_24x7_event_read() will compute the change in value and
report to the perf tool. Similarly, for the transaction interface, clear
the event count to 0 at the beginning of the transaction.
perf stat -C 0 -e \
'hv_24x7/HPM_0THRD_NON_IDLE_CCYC__PHYS_CORE,core=1/' \
sleep 1
Performance counter stats for 'CPU(s) 0':

24x7 counters can belong to different domains (core, chip, virtual CPU
etc). For events in the 'chip' domain, sysfs entry currently looks like:
$ cd /sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/events
$ cat PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP
domain=0x1,offset=0x230,core=?,lpar=0x0
where the required parameter, 'core=?' is specified with perf as:
perf stat -C 0 -e hv_24x7/PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP,core=1/ \
/bin/true
This is inconsistent in that 'core' is a required parameter for a chip
event. Instead, have the the sysfs entry display 'chip=?' for chip
events:
$ cd /sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/events
$ cat PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP
domain=0x1,offset=0x230,chip=?,lpar=0x0
We also need to add a 'chip' entry in the sysfs format directory:
$ ls /sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/format
chip core domain lpar offset vcpu
^^^^
(new)
so the perf tool can automatically check usage and format the chip
parameter correctly:
$ perf stat -C 0 -v -e hv_24x7/PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP/ \
/bin/true
Required parameter 'chip' not specified
invalid or unsupported event: 'hv_24x7/PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP/'
$ perf stat -C 0 -v -e hv_24x7/PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP,chip=1/ \
/bin/true
hv_24x7/PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP,chip=1/: 0 6628908 6628908
Performance counter stats for 'CPU(s) 0':
0 hv_24x7/PM_XLINK_CYCLES__PHYS_CHIP,chip=1/

Power8 supports a large number of events in each susbystem so when a
user runs:
perf stat -e branch-instructions sleep 1
perf stat -e L1-dcache-loads sleep 1
it is not clear as to which PMU events were monitored.
Export the generic hardware and cache perf events for Power8 to sysfs,
so users can precisely determine the PMU event monitored by the generic
event.
Eg:
cat /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/events/branch-instructions
event=0x10068
$ cat /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/events/L1-dcache-loads
event=0x100ee

We used the PME_ prefix earlier to avoid some macro/variable name
collisions. We have since changed the way we define/use the event
macros so we no longer need the prefix.
By dropping the prefix, we keep the the event macros consistent with
their official names.

This makes vmalloc_to_phys() public as there will be another user
(KVM in-kernel VFIO acceleration) for it soon. As this new user
can be compiled as a module, this exports the symbol.
As a little optimization, this changes the helper to call
vmalloc_to_pfn() instead of vmalloc_to_page() as the size of the
struct page may not be power-of-two aligned which will make gcc use
multiply instructions instead of shifts.

The GPCI hcall allows for a 4K buffer but we limit the buffer to 1K.
The problem with a 1K buffer is if a request results in returning
more values than can be accomodated in the 1K buffer the request will
fail.
The buffer we are using is currently allocated on the stack and hence
limited in size. Instead use a per-CPU 4K buffer like we do with 24x7
counters (hv-24x7.c).
While here, rename the macro GPCI_MAX_DATA_BYTES to HGPCI_MAX_DATA_BYTES
for consistency with 24x7 counters.

Commit 7a7868326d ("powerpc/perf: Add an explict flag indicating
presence of SLOT field") introduced the PPMU_HAS_SSLOT flag to remove
the assumption that MMCRA[SLOT] was present when PPMU_ALT_SIPR was not
set.
That commit's changelog also mentions that Power8 does not support
MMCRA[SLOT]. However when the Power8 PMU support was merged, it
errnoeously included the PPMU_HAS_SSLOT flag.
So remove PPMU_HAS_SSLOT from the Power8 flags.
mpe: On systems where MMCRA[SLOT] exists, the field occupies bits 37:39
(IBM numbering). On Power8 bit 37 is reserved, and 38:39 overlap with
the high bits of the Threshold Event Counter Mantissa. I am not aware of
any published events which use the threshold counting mechanism, which
would cause the mantissa bits to be set. So in practice this bug is
unlikely to trigger.

We need to properly identify whether a hugepage is an explicit or
a transparent hugepage in follow_huge_addr(). We used to depend
on hugepage shift argument to do that. But in some case that can
result in wrong results. For ex:
On finding a transparent hugepage we set hugepage shift to PMD_SHIFT.
But we can end up clearing the thp pte, via pmdp_huge_get_and_clear.
We do prevent reusing the pfn page via the usage of
kick_all_cpus_sync(). But that happens after we updated the pte to 0.
Hence in follow_huge_addr() we can find hugepage shift set, but transparent
huge page check fail for a thp pte.
NOTE: We fixed a variant of this race against thp split in commit
691e95fd73
("powerpc/mm/thp: Make page table walk safe against thp split/collapse")
Without this patch, we may hit the BUG_ON(flags & FOLL_GET) in
follow_page_mask occasionally.
In the long term, we may want to switch ppc64 64k page size config to
enable CONFIG_ARCH_WANT_GENERAL_HUGETLB

We currently use PERF_EVENT_TXN flag to determine if we are in the middle
of a transaction. If in a transaction, we defer the schedulability checks
from pmu->add() operation to the pmu->commit() operation.
Now that we have "transaction types" (PERF_PMU_TXN_ADD, PERF_PMU_TXN_READ)
we can use the type to determine if we are in a transaction and drop the
PERF_EVENT_TXN flag.
When PERF_EVENT_TXN is dropped, the cpuhw->group_flag on some architectures
becomes unused, so drop that field as well.
This is an extension of the Powerpc patch from Peter Zijlstra to s390,
Sparc and x86 architectures.

The 24x7 counters in Powerpc allow monitoring a large number of counters
simultaneously. They also allow reading several counters in a single
HCALL so we can get a more consistent snapshot of the system.
Use the PMU's transaction interface to monitor and read several event
counters at once. The idea is that users can group several 24x7 events
into a single group of events. We use the following logic to submit
the group of events to the PMU and read the values:
pmu->start_txn() // Initialize before first event
for each event in group
pmu->read(event); // Queue each event to be read
pmu->commit_txn() // Read/update all queuedcounters
The ->commit_txn() also updates the event counts in the respective
perf_event objects. The perf subsystem can then directly get the
event counts from the perf_event and can avoid submitting a new
->read() request to the PMU.

Currently, the PMU interface allows reading only one counter at a time.
But some PMUs like the 24x7 counters in Power, support reading several
counters at once. To leveage this functionality, extend the transaction
interface to support a "transaction type".
The first type, PERF_PMU_TXN_ADD, refers to the existing transactions,
i.e. used to _schedule_ all the events on the PMU as a group. A second
transaction type, PERF_PMU_TXN_READ, will be used in a follow-on patch,
by the 24x7 counters to read several counters at once.
Extend the transaction interfaces to the PMU to accept a 'txn_flags'
parameter and use this parameter to ignore any transactions that are
not of type PERF_PMU_TXN_ADD.

When we take a PMU exception or a software event we call
perf_read_regs(). This overloads regs->result with a boolean that
describes if we should use the sampled instruction address register
(SIAR) or the regs.
If the exception is in kernel, we start with the kernel regs and
backtrace through the kernel stack. At this point we switch to the
userspace regs and backtrace the user stack with perf_callchain_user().
Unfortunately these regs have not got the perf_read_regs() treatment,
so regs->result could be anything. If it is non zero,
perf_instruction_pointer() decides to use the SIAR, and we get issues
like this:

Add a check in regs_use_siar() to check that the regs in question

We can disable a THP split or a hugepage collapse by disabling irq.
We do send IPI to all the cpus in the early part of split/collapse,
and disabling local irq ensure we don't make progress with
split/collapse. If the THP is getting split we return NULL from
find_linux_pte_or_hugepte(). For all the current callers it should be ok.
We need to be careful if we want to use returned pte_t pointer outside
the irq disabled region. W.r.t to THP split, the pfn remains the same,
but then a hugepage collapse will result in a pfn change. There are
few steps we can take to avoid a hugepage collapse. One way is to take page
reference inside the irq disable region. Other option is to take
mmap_sem so that a parallel collapse will not happen. We can also
disable collapse by taking pmd_lock. Another method used by kvm
subsystem is to check whether we had a mmu_notifer update in between
using mmu_notifier_retry().

Pull perf changes from Ingo Molnar:
"Core kernel changes:
- One of the more interesting features in this cycle is the ability
to attach eBPF programs (user-defined, sandboxed bytecode executed
by the kernel) to kprobes.
This allows user-defined instrumentation on a live kernel image
that can never crash, hang or interfere with the kernel negatively.
(Right now it's limited to root-only, but in the future we might
allow unprivileged use as well.)
(Alexei Starovoitov)
- Another non-trivial feature is per event clockid support: this
allows, amongst other things, the selection of different clock
sources for event timestamps traced via perf.
This feature is sought by people who'd like to merge perf generated
events with external events that were measured with different
clocks:
- cluster wide profiling
- for system wide tracing with user-space events,
- JIT profiling events
etc. Matching perf tooling support is added as well, available via
the -k, --clockid <clockid> parameter to perf record et al.
(Peter Zijlstra)
Hardware enablement kernel changes:
- x86 Intel Processor Trace (PT) support: which is a hardware tracer
on steroids, available on Broadwell CPUs.
The hardware trace stream is directly output into the user-space
ring-buffer, using the 'AUX' data format extension that was added
to the perf core to support hardware constraints such as the
necessity to have the tracing buffer physically contiguous.
This patch-set was developed for two years and this is the result.
A simple way to make use of this is to use BTS tracing, the PT
driver emulates BTS output - available via the 'intel_bts' PMU.
More explicit PT specific tooling support is in the works as well -
will probably be ready by 4.2.
(Alexander Shishkin, Peter Zijlstra)
- x86 Intel Cache QoS Monitoring (CQM) support: this is a hardware
feature of Intel Xeon CPUs that allows the measurement and
allocation/partitioning of caches to individual workloads.
These kernel changes expose the measurement side as a new PMU
driver, which exposes various QoS related PMU events. (The
partitioning change is work in progress and is planned to be merged
as a cgroup extension.)
(Matt Fleming, Peter Zijlstra; CPU feature detection by Peter P
Waskiewicz Jr)
- x86 Intel Haswell LBR call stack support: this is a new Haswell
feature that allows the hardware recording of call chains, plus
tooling support. To activate this feature you have to enable it
via the new 'lbr' call-graph recording option:
perf record --call-graph lbr
perf report
or:
perf top --call-graph lbr
This hardware feature is a lot faster than stack walk or dwarf
based unwinding, but has some limitations:
- It reuses the current LBR facility, so LBR call stack and
branch record can not be enabled at the same time.
- It is only available for user-space callchains.
(Yan, Zheng)
- x86 Intel Broadwell CPU support and various event constraints and
event table fixes for earlier models.
(Andi Kleen)
- x86 Intel HT CPUs event scheduling workarounds. This is a complex
CPU bug affecting the SNB,IVB,HSW families that results in counter
value corruption. The mitigation code is automatically enabled and
is transparent.
(Maria Dimakopoulou, Stephane Eranian)

It uses macro magic similar to ftrace.
Also convert the existing hv-gpci request structures and enum values to
use the new framework (and adjust old users of the structs and enum

fashion, and are all parameterized.

domain=0x2,offset=0xd58,core=?,lpar=0x0

where user is required to specify values for the fields with '?' (like
core, vcpu, lpar above), when specifying the event with the perf tool.
Catalog is (at the moment) only parsed on boot. It needs re-parsing

The 24x7 counters are continuously running and not updated on an
interrupt. So we record the event counts when stopping the event or
deleting it.
But to "read" a single counter in 24x7, we allocate a page and pass it
into the hypervisor (The HV returns the page full of counters from which
we extract the specific counter for this event).
We allocate a page using GFP_USER and when deleting the event, we end up
with the following warning because we are blocking in interrupt context.
[ 698.641709] BUG: scheduling while atomic: swapper/0/0/0x10010000
We could use GFP_ATOMIC but that could result in failures. Pre-allocate
a buffer so we don't have to allocate in interrupt context. Further as
Michael Ellerman suggested, use Per-CPU buffer so we only need to
allocate once per CPU.

V2->V2
- Fix up to work against 3.18-rc1
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of
them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates
the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor
based on an offset.
Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current
processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when
writing data or on the right side of an assignment.
__get_cpu_var() is defined as :
__get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store
and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on
other platforms) to avoid the address calculation.
this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a
percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu
variables.
This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address
calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that
use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers
are used when code is generated.
At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so
the macro is removed too.
The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations
are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86
arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global
register that may be set to the per cpu base.
Transformations done to __get_cpu_var()
1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor.
DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y);
int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y);

catalog_read() implements the read interface for the sysfs file
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/hv_24x7/interface/catalog
It essentially takes a buffer, an offset and count as parameters
to the read() call. It makes a hypervisor call to read a specific
page from the catalog and copy the required bytes into the given
buffer. Each call to catalog_read() returns at most one 4K page.
Given these requirements, we should be able to simplify the
catalog_read().

ABIv2 kernels are failing to backtrace through the kernel. An example:
39.30% readseek2_proce [kernel.kallsyms] [k] find_get_entry
|
--- find_get_entry
__GI___libc_read
The problem is in valid_next_sp() where we check that the new stack
pointer is at least STACK_FRAME_OVERHEAD below the previous one.
ABIv1 has a minimum stack frame size of 112 bytes consisting of 48 bytes
and 64 bytes of parameter save area. ABIv2 changes that to 32 bytes
with no paramter save area.
STACK_FRAME_OVERHEAD is in theory the minimum stack frame size,
but we over 240 uses of it, some of which assume that it includes
space for the parameter area.
We need to work through all our stack defines and rationalise them
but let's fix perf now by creating STACK_FRAME_MIN_SIZE and using
in valid_next_sp(). This fixes the issue:

Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org>
Power8 has a new register (MMCR2), which contains individual freeze bits
for each counter. This is an improvement on previous chips as it means
we can have multiple events on the PMU at the same time with different
exclude_{user,kernel,hv} settings. Previously we had to ensure all
events on the PMU had the same exclude settings.
The core of the patch is fairly simple. We use the 207S feature flag to
indicate that the PMU backend supports per-event excludes, if it's set
we skip the generic logic that enforces the equality of excludes between
events. We also use that flag to skip setting the freeze bits in MMCR0,
the PMU backend is expected to have handled setting them in MMCR2.
The complication arises with EBB. The FCxP bits in MMCR2 are accessible
R/W to a task using EBB. Which means a task using EBB will be able to
see that we are using MMCR2 for freezing, whereas the old logic which
used MMCR0 is not user visible.
The task can not see or affect exclude_kernel & exclude_hv, so we only
need to consider exclude_user.
The table below summarises the behaviour both before and after this
commit is applied:
exclude_user true false
------------------------------------
| User visible | N N
Before | Can freeze | Y Y
| Can unfreeze | N Y
------------------------------------
| User visible | Y Y
After | Can freeze | Y Y
| Can unfreeze | Y/N Y
------------------------------------
So firstly I assert that the simple visibility of the exclude_user
setting in MMCR2 is a non-issue. The event belongs to the task, and
was most likely created by the task. So the exclude_user setting is not
privileged information in any way.
Secondly, the behaviour in the exclude_user = false case is unchanged.
This is important as it is the case that is actually useful, ie. the
event is created with no exclude setting and the task uses MMCR2 to
implement exclusion manually.
For exclude_user = true there is no meaningful change to freezing the
event. Previously the task could use MMCR2 to freeze the event, though
it was already frozen with MMCR0. With the new code the task can use
MMCR2 to freeze the event, though it was already frozen with MMCR2.
The only real change is when exclude_user = true and the task tries to
use MMCR2 to unfreeze the event. Previously this had no effect, because
the event was already frozen in MMCR0. With the new code the task can
unfreeze the event in MMCR2, but at some indeterminate time in the
future the kernel will overwrite its setting and refreeze the event.
Therefore my final assertion is that any task using exclude_user = true
and also fiddling with MMCR2 was deeply confused before this change, and
remains so after it.

Because we reuse cpuhw->mmcr on each call to compute_mmcr() there's a
risk that we could forget to set one of the values and use whatever
value was in there previously.
Currently all the implementations are careful to set all the values, but
it's safer to clear them all before we call compute_mmcr().

In the recent commit b50a6c584b "Clear MMCR2 when enabling PMU", I
screwed up the handling of MMCR2 for tasks using EBB.
We must make sure we set MMCR2 *before* ebb_switch_in(), otherwise we
overwrite the value of MMCR2 that userspace may have written. That
potentially breaks a task that uses EBB and manually uses MMCR2 for
event freezing.

We are seeing a lot of PMU warnings on POWER8:
Can't find PMC that caused IRQ
Looking closer, the active PMC is 0 at this point and we took a PMU
exception on the transition from negative to 0. Some versions of POWER8
have an issue where they edge detect and not level detect PMC overflows.
A number of places program the PMC with (0x80000000 - period_left),
where period_left can be negative. We can either fix all of these or
just ensure that period_left is always >= 1.
This patch takes the second option.

On POWER8 when switching to a KVM guest we set bits in MMCR2 to freeze
the PMU counters. Aside from on boot they are then never reset,
resulting in stuck perf counters for any user in the guest or host.
We now set MMCR2 to 0 whenever enabling the PMU, which provides a sane
state for perf to use the PMU counters under either the guest or the
host.
This was manifesting as a bug with ppc64_cpu --frequency:
$ sudo ppc64_cpu --frequency

max: 0.000 GHz (cpu -1)
avg: 0.000 GHz
The command uses a perf counter to measure CPU cycles over a fixed
amount of time, in order to approximate the frequency of the machine.
The counters were returning zero once a guest was started, regardless of
weather it was still running or had been shut down.
By dumping the value of MMCR2, it was observed that once a guest is
running MMCR2 is set to 1s - which stops counters from running:
$ sudo sh -c 'echo p > /proc/sysrq-trigger'
CPU: 0 PMU registers, ppmu = POWER8 n_counters = 6

However that is incorrect, because although the bank is non-zero, the

24x7 (also called hv_24x7 or H_24X7) is an interface to obtain
performance counters from the hypervisor. These counters do not have a
fixed format/possition and are instead documented in a "24x7 Catalog",
which is provided by the hypervisor (that interface is also documented
paritialy in the included hv-24x7-catalog.h and fully in at
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jmesmon/catalog-24x7/master/hv-24x7-catalog.h ).
The 24x7 data access is simply a copy operation into a 4 dimentional
array of 64bit counters (from hypervisor to kernel memory). There is no
interupt triggered on overflow, these are completely disjoint from the
typical power pmu.
This method of obtaining performance counters from the hypervisor is

"H_GetPerformanceCounterInfo" (refered to as hv_gpci or just gpci from
here on) is an interface to retrieve specific performance counters and
other data from the hypervisor. All outputs have a fixed format. This
header only describes the portions of the interface that we plan on
using in linux at this time.

The previous commit added constraint and register handling to allow
processes using EBB (Event Based Branches) to request access to the BHRB
(Branch History Rolling Buffer).
With that in place we can allow processes using EBB to access the BHRB.
This is achieved by setting BHRBA in MMCR0 when we enable EBB access. We
must also clear BHRBA when we are disabling.

We want a way for users of EBB (Event Based Branches) to also access the
BHRB (Branch History Rolling Buffer). EBB does not interoperate with our
existing BHRB support, which is wired into the generic Linux branch
stack sampling support.
To support EBB & BHRB we add three new bits to the event code. The first
bit indicates that the event wants access to the BHRB, and the other two
bits indicate the desired IFM (Instruction Filtering Mode).
We allow multiple events to request access to the BHRB, but they must
agree on the IFM value. Events which are not interested in the BHRB can
also interoperate with events which do.
Finally we program the desired IFM value into MMCRA. Although we do this
for every event, we know that the value will be identical for all events
that request BHRB access.

We only need to mask the EBB bit out of the event for the check of the
special PMC 5 & 6 events. So use a local to do it just for that code,
rather than changing the event value for the life of the function.
While we're there move the set of mask and value after all the checks.

Rather than using PERF_EVENT_CONFIG_EBB_SHIFT everywhere, add an
EVENT_EBB_SHIFT like every other event and use that.

Although we already block EBB events which request sampling using
sample_period, technically it's possible for an event to set sample_type
but not sample_period.
Nothing terrible will happen if an EBB event does specify sample_type,
but it signals a major confusion on the part of userspace, and so we do
them the favor of rejecting it.

Currently the sysrq ShowRegs command does not print any PMU registers as
we have an empty definition for perf_event_print_debug(). This patch
defines perf_event_print_debug() to print various PMU registers.

Right now the config_bhrb() PMU specific call happens after
write_mmcr0(), which actually enables the PMU for event counting and
interrupts. So there is a small window of time where the PMU and BHRB
runs without the required HW branch filter (if any) enabled in BHRB.
This can cause some of the branch samples to be collected through BHRB
without any filter applied and hence affects the correctness of
the results. This patch moves the BHRB config function call before
enabling interrupts.
Here are some data points captured via trace prints which depicts how we
could get PMU interrupts with BHRB filter NOT enabled with a standard
perf record command line (asking for branch record information as well).
$ perf record -j any_call ls
Before the patch:-
ls-1962 [003] d... 2065.299590: .perf_event_interrupt: MMCRA: 40000000000
ls-1962 [003] d... 2065.299603: .perf_event_interrupt: MMCRA: 40000000000
...
All the PMU interrupts before this point did not have the requested
HW branch filter enabled in the MMCRA.
ls-1962 [003] d... 2065.299647: .perf_event_interrupt: MMCRA: 40040000000
ls-1962 [003] d... 2065.299662: .perf_event_interrupt: MMCRA: 40040000000
After the patch:-
ls-1850 [008] d... 190.311828: .perf_event_interrupt: MMCRA: 40040000000
ls-1850 [008] d... 190.311848: .perf_event_interrupt: MMCRA: 40040000000
All the PMU interrupts have the requested HW BHRB branch filter
enabled in MMCRA.

Commit 4df4899 "Add power8 EBB support" included a bug in the handling
of the FAB_CRESP_MATCH and FAB_TYPE_MATCH fields.
These values are pulled out of the event code using EVENT_THR_CTL_SHIFT,
however we were then or'ing that value directly into MMCR1.
This meant we were failing to set the FAB fields correctly, and also
potentially corrupting the value for PMC4SEL. Leading to no counts for
the FAB events and incorrect counts for PMC4.
The fix is simply to shift left the FAB value correctly before or'ing it
with MMCR1.

"Here's the powerpc batch for this merge window. Some of the
highlights are:
- A bunch of endian fixes ! We don't have full LE support yet in that
release but this contains a lot of fixes all over arch/powerpc to
use the proper accessors, call the firmware with the right endian
mode, etc...
- A few updates to our "powernv" platform (non-virtualized, the one
to run KVM on), among other, support for bridging the P8 LPC bus
for UARTs, support and some EEH fixes.
- Some mpc51xx clock API cleanups in preparation for a clock API
overhaul
- A pile of cleanups of our old math emulation code, including better
support for using it to emulate optional FP instructions on
embedded chips that otherwise have a HW FPU.
- Some infrastructure in selftest, for powerpc now, but could be
generalized, initially used by some tests for our perf instruction
counting code.
- A pile of fixes for hotplug on pseries (that was seriously
bitrotting)
- The usual slew of freescale embedded updates, new boards, 64-bit
hiberation support, e6500 core PMU support, etc..."

e6500 core performance monitors has the following features:
- 6 performance monitor counters
- 512 events supported
- no threshold events
e6500 PMU has more specific events (Data L1 cache misses, Instruction L1
cache misses, etc ) than e500 PMU (which only had Data L1 cache reloads,
etc). Where available, the more specific events have been used which will
produce slightly different results than e500 PMU equivalents.
