Currently pci-bridges are allocated enough resources to satisfy their immediate
requirements. Any additional resource-requests fail if additional free space,
contiguous to the one already allocated, is not available. This behavior is not
reasonable since sufficient contiguous resources, that can satisfy the request,
are available at a different location.
This patch provides the ability to expand and relocate a allocated resource.

On a given PCI-E fabric, each device, bridge, and root port can have a
different PCI-E maximum payload size. There is a sizable performance
boost for having the largest possible maximum payload size on each PCI-E
device. However, if improperly configured, fatal bus errors can occur.
Thus, it is important to ensure that PCI-E payloads sends by a device
are never larger than the MPS setting of all devices on the way to the
destination.
This can be achieved two ways:
- A conservative approach is to use the smallest common denominator of
the entire tree below a root complex for every device on that fabric.
This means for example that having a 128 bytes MPS USB controller on one
leg of a switch will dramatically reduce performances of a video card or
10GE adapter on another leg of that same switch.
It also means that any hierarchy supporting hotplug slots (including
expresscard or thunderbolt I suppose, dbl check that) will have to be
entirely clamped to 128 bytes since we cannot predict what will be
plugged into those slots, and we cannot change the MPS on a "live"
system.
- A more optimal way is possible, if it falls within a couple of
constraints:
* The top-level host bridge will never generate packets larger than the
smallest TLP (or if it can be controlled independently from its MPS at
least)
* The device will never generate packets larger than MPS (which can be
configured via MRRS)
* No support of direct PCI-E <-> PCI-E transfers between devices without
some additional code to specifically deal with that case
Then we can use an approach that basically ignores downstream requests
and focuses exclusively on upstream requests. In that case, all we need
to care about is that a device MPS is no larger than its parent MPS,
which allows us to keep all switches/bridges to the max MPS supported by
their parent and eventually the PHB.
In this case, your USB controller would no longer "starve" your 10GE
Ethernet and your hotplug slots won't affect your global MPS.
Additionally, the hotplugged devices themselves can be configured to a
larger MPS up to the value configured in the hotplug bridge.
To choose between the two available options, two PCI kernel boot args
have been added to the PCI calls. "pcie_bus_safe" will provide the
former behavior, while "pcie_bus_perf" will perform the latter behavior.
By default, the latter behavior is used.
NOTE: due to the location of the enablement, each arch will need to add
calls to this function. This patch only enables x86.
This patch includes a number of changes recommended by Benjamin
Herrenschmidt.

Aside of the usual motivation for constification, this function has a
history of being abused a hook for interrupt and other fixups so I turned
this function const ages ago in the MIPS code but it should be done
treewide.
Due to function pointer passing in varous places a few other functions

'pci_obff_signal_type' is passed between drivers and the kernel API.
This patch explicitly assigns values to the enumeration type's constants
which aids in detecting any future changes or additions that would break
the kernel's ABI.

This should ease finding similarities with different platforms,
with the intention of solving problems once in a generic framework
which everyone can use.
Note: to move intel-iommu.c, the declaration of pci_find_upstream_pcie_bridge()
has to move from drivers/pci/pci.h to include/linux/pci.h. This is handled
in this patch, too.
As suggested, also drop DMAR's EXPERIMENTAL tag while we're at it.

powerpc has two different ways of matching PCI devices to their
corresponding OF node (if any) for historical reasons. The ppc64 one
does a scan looking for matching bus/dev/fn, while the ppc32 one does a
scan looking only for matching dev/fn on each level in order to be
agnostic to busses being renumbered (which Linux does on some
platforms).
This removes both and instead moves the matching code to the PCI core
itself. It's the most logical place to do it: when a pci_dev is created,
we know the parent and thus can do a single level scan for the matching
device_node (if any).
The benefit is that all archs now get the matching for free. There's one
hook the arch might want to provide to match a PHB bus to its device
node. A default weak implementation is provided that looks for the
parent device device node, but it's not entirely reliable on powerpc for
various reasons so powerpc provides its own.

For KVM device assignment, we'd like to save off the state of a device
prior to passing it to the guest and restore it later. We also want
to allow pci_reset_funciton() to be called while the device is owned
by the guest. This however overwrites and invalidates the struct pci_dev
buffers, so we can't just manually call save and restore. Add generic
interfaces for the saved state to be stored and reloaded back into
struct pci_dev at a later time.

Latency tolerance reporting allows devices to send messages to the root
complex indicating their latency tolerance for snooped & unsnooped
memory transactions. Add support for enabling & disabling this
feature, along with a routine to set the max latencies a device should
send upstream.

OBFF (optimized buffer flush/fill), where supported, can help improve
energy efficiency by giving devices information about when interrupts
and other activity will have a reduced power impact. It requires
support from both the device and system (i.e. not only does the device
need to respond to OBFF messages, but the platform must be capable of
generating and routing them to the end point).

Add support to allow drivers to enable/disable ID-based ordering. Where
supported, ID-based ordering can significantly improve the latency of
individual requests by preventing them from queueing up behind unrelated
traffic.

So in a lot of modern systems, a GPU will always be below a parent bridge that won't share with any other GPUs. This means VGA arbitration on those GPUs can be controlled by using the bridge routing instead of io/mem decodes.
The problem is locating which GPUs share which upstream bridges. This patch attempts to identify all the GPUs which can be controlled via bridges, and ones that can't. This patch endeavours to work out the bridge sharing semantics.
When disabling GPUs via a bridge, it doesn't do irq callbacks or touch the io/mem decodes for the gpu.

We need to distinguish the situation in which ASPM support is
disabled from the command line or through .config from the situation
in which it is disabled, because the hardware or BIOS can't handle
it. In the former case we should not report ASPM support to the BIOS
through ACPI _OSC, but in the latter case we should do that.
Introduce pcie_aspm_support_enabled() that can be used by
acpi_pci_root_add() to determine whether or not it should report ASPM
support to the BIOS through _OSC.

Move the evaluation of acpi_pci_osc_control_set() (to request control of
PCI Express native features) into acpi_pci_root_add() to avoid calling
it many times for the same root complex with the same arguments.
Additionally, check if all of the requisite _OSC support bits are set
before calling acpi_pci_osc_control_set() for a given root complex.

pci_restore_state only ever returns 0, thus there is no benefit in
having it return any value. Also, a large majority of the callers do
not check the return code of pci_restore_state. Make the
pci_restore_state a void return and avoid the overhead.

It is a known issue that mmio decoding shall be disabled while doing PCI
bar sizing. Host bridge and other devices (PCI PIC) shall be excluded for
certain platforms. This patch mainly comes from Mathew Willcox's
patch in http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2007/9/13/258969.
A new flag bit "mmio_alway_on" is added to pci_dev with the intention that
devices with their mmio decoding cannot be disabled during BAR sizing shall
have this bit set, preferrablly in their quirks.
Without this patch, Intel Moorestown platform graphics unit will be
corrupted during bar sizing activities.

If we fail to assign resources to a PCI BAR, this patch makes us try the
original address from BIOS rather than leaving it disabled.
Linux tries to make sure all PCI device BARs are inside the upstream
PCI host bridge or P2P bridge apertures, reassigning BARs if necessary.
Windows does similar reassignment.
Before this patch, if we could not move a BAR into an aperture, we left
the resource unassigned, i.e., at address zero. Windows leaves such BARs
at the original BIOS addresses, and this patch makes Linux do the same.
This is a bit ugly because we disable the resource long before we try to
reassign it, so we have to keep track of the BIOS BAR address somewhere.
For lack of a better place, I put it in the struct pci_dev.
I think it would be cleaner to attempt the assignment immediately when the
claim fails, so we could easily remember the original address. But we
currently claim motherboard resources in the middle, after attempting to
claim PCI resources and before assigning new PCI resources, and changing
that is a fairly big job.

Now, a dedicated HEST tabling parsing code is used for PCIE AER
firmware_first setup. It is rebased on general HEST tabling parsing
code of APEI. The firmware_first setup code is moved from PCI core to
AER driver too, because it is only AER related.

This code changes the detection procedure of i7core_edac. Instead of
directly probing for MC registers, it probes for another register found
on Nehalem. If found, it tries to pick the first MC PCI BUS. This should
work fine with Xeon 35xx, but, on Xeon 55xx, this is at bus 254 and 255
that are not properly detected by the non-legacy PCI methods.
The new detection code scans specifically at buses 254 and 255 for the
Xeon 55xx devices.
This code has not tested yet. After working, a change at the code will
be needed, since the i7core is not yet ready for working with 2 sets of
MC.

Previously we used a table of size PCI_BUS_NUM_RESOURCES (16) for resources
forwarded to a bus by its upstream bridge. We've increased this size
several times when the table overflowed.
But there's no good limit on the number of resources because host bridges
and subtractive decode bridges can forward any number of ranges to their
secondary buses.
This patch reduces the table to only PCI_BRIDGE_RESOURCE_NUM (4) entries,
which corresponds to the number of windows a PCI-to-PCI (3) or CardBus (4)
bridge can positively decode. Any additional resources, e.g., PCI host
bridge windows or subtractively-decoded regions, are kept in a list.
I'd prefer a single list rather than this split table/list approach, but
that requires simultaneous changes to every architecture. This approach
only requires immediate changes where we set up (a) host bridges with more
than four windows and (b) subtractive-decode P2P bridges, and we can
incrementally change other architectures to use the list.

No functional change; this converts loops that iterate from 0 to
PCI_BUS_NUM_RESOURCES through pci_bus resource[] table to use the
pci_bus_for_each_resource() iterator instead.
This doesn't change the way resources are stored; it merely removes
dependencies on the fact that they're in a table.

Introduce run-time PM callbacks for the PCI bus type. Make the new
callbacks work in analogy with the existing system sleep PM
callbacks, so that the drivers already converted to struct dev_pm_ops
can use their suspend and resume routines for run-time PM without
modifications.

Although the majority of PCI devices can generate PMEs that in
principle may be used to wake up devices suspended at run time,
platform support is generally necessary to convert PMEs into wake-up
events that can be delivered to the kernel. If ACPI is used for this
purpose, PME signals generated by a PCI device will trigger the ACPI
GPE associated with the device to generate an ACPI wake-up event that
we can set up a handler for, provided that everything is configured
correctly.
Unfortunately, the subset of PCI devices that have GPEs associated
with them is quite limited. The devices without dedicated GPEs have
to rely on the GPEs associated with other devices (in the majority of
cases their upstream bridges and, possibly, the root bridge) to
generate ACPI wake-up events in response to PME signals from them.
Add ACPI platform support for PCI PME wake-up:
o Add a framework making is possible to use ACPI system notify
handlers for run-time PM.
o Add new PCI platform callback ->run_wake() to struct
pci_platform_pm_ops allowing us to enable/disable the platform to
generate wake-up events for given device. Implemet this callback
for the ACPI platform.
o Define ACPI wake-up handlers for PCI devices and PCI root buses and
make the PCI-ACPI binding code register wake-up notifiers for all
PCI devices present in the ACPI tables.
o Add function pci_dev_run_wake() which can be used by PCI drivers to
check if given device is capable of generating wake-up events at
run time.

PCIe native PME detection mechanism is based on interrupts generated
by root ports or event collectors every time a PCIe device sends a
PME message upstream.
Once a PME message has been sent by an endpoint device and received
by its root port (or event collector in the case of root complex
integrated endpoints), the Requester ID from the message header is
registered in the root port's Root Status register. At the same
time, the PME Status bit of the Root Status register is set to
indicate that there's a PME to handle. If PCIe PME interrupt is
enabled for the root port, it generates an interrupt once the PME
Status has been set. After receiving the interrupt, the kernel can
identify the PCIe device that generated the PME using the Requester
ID from the root port's Root Status register. [For details, see PCI
Express Base Specification, Rev. 2.0.]
Implement a driver for the PCIe PME root port service working in
accordance with the above description.

The "is_pcie" field in struct pci_dev is no longer needed because
struct pci_dev has PCIe capability offset in "pcie_cap" field and
(pcie_cap != 0) means the device is PCIe capable. This patch marks
"is_pcie" fields obsolete.
Current users of "is_pcie" field are:
- drivers/ssb/scan.c
- drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/pci.c
- drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath5k/attach.c
- drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath5k/reset.c
- drivers/acpi/hest.c

The ISDN4Linux HiSax driver family contains the last remaining users
of the deprecated pci_find_device() function. This patch creates a
private copy of that function in HiSax, and removes the now unused
global function together with its controlling configuration option,
CONFIG_PCI_LEGACY.

Currently, drivers/pci/quirks.c is built unconditionally, but if
CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS is unset, the only things actually built in this
file are definitions of global variables and empty functions (due to
the #ifdef CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS embracing all of the code inside the
file). This is not particularly nice and if someone overlooks
the #ifdef CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS, build errors are introduced.
To clean that up, move the definitions of the global variables in
quirks.c that are always built to pci.c, move the definitions of
the empty functions (compiled when CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS is unset) to
headers (additionally make these functions static inline) and modify
drivers/pci/Makefile so that quirks.c is only built if
CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS is set.

Move the max_bus_speed and cur_bus_speed into the pci_bus. Expose the

It turns out that some PCI devices require extra delays when changing
power state from D3 to D0 (and the other way around). Although this
is against the PCI specification, we can handle it quite easily by
allowing drivers to define arbitrary D3 delays for devices known to
require extra time for switching power states.
Introduce additional field d3_delay in struct pci_dev and use it to
store the value of the device's D0->D3 delay, in miliseconds. Make
the PCI PM core code use the per-device d3_delay unless
pci_pm_d3_delay is greater (in which case the latter is used).
[This also allows the driver to specify d3_delay shorter than the
10 ms required by the PCI standard if the device is known to be able
to handle that.]
Make the sky2 driver set d3_delay to 150 for devices handled by it.

The cardbus code creates PCI devices without ever going through the
necessary fixup bits and pieces that normal PCI devices go through.
There's in fact a commented out call to pcibios_fixup_bus() in there,
it's commented because ... it doesn't work.
I could make pcibios_fixup_bus() do the right thing on powerpc easily
but I felt it cleaner instead to provide a specific hook pci_fixup_cardbus
for which a weak empty implementation is provided by the PCI core.
This fixes cardbus on powerbooks and probably all other PowerPC
platforms which was broken completely for ever on some platforms and
since 2.6.31 on others such as PowerBooks when we made the DMA ops
mandatory (since those are setup by the fixups).

Commit ae21ee65e8 "PCI: acs p2p upsteram
forwarding enabling" doesn't actually enable ACS.
Add a function to pci core to allow an IOMMU to request that ACS
be enabled. The existing mechanism of using iommu_found() in the pci
core to know when ACS should be enabled doesn't actually work due to
initialization order; iommu has only been detected not initialized.
Have Intel and AMD IOMMUs request ACS, and Xen does as well during early
init of dom0.

Introduce pci_is_pcie() which returns true if the specified PCI device
is PCI Express capable, false otherwise.
The purpose of pci_is_pcie() is removing 'is_pcie' flag in the struct
pci_dev, which is not needed because we can check it using 'pcie_cap'
field. To remove 'is_pcie', we need to update user of 'is_pcie' to use
pci_is_pcie() instead first.

(currently it is saved in 'pcie_cap' field in the struct PCI dev).

There are a lot of codes that searches PCI express capability offset
in the PCI configuration space using pci_find_capability(). Caching it
in the struct pci_dev will reduce unncecessary search. This patch adds
an additional 'pcie_cap' fields into struct pci_dev, which is
initialized at pci device scan time (in set_pcie_port_type()).

Added the pci_get_domain_and_slot_function which is analogous to
pci_get_bus_and_slot. It returns a pci_dev given a domain (segment) number,
bus number, and devnr. Like pci_get_bus_and_slot,
pci_get_domain_bus_and_slot holds a reference to the returned pci_dev.
Converted pci_get_bus_and_slot to a wrapper that calls
pci_get_domain_bus_and_slot with the domain hard-coded to 0.
This routine was patterned off code suggested by Bjorn Helgaas.

Feedback from Hidetoshi Seto and Kenji Kaneshige incorporated. This
correctly handles PCI-X bridges, PCIe root ports and endpoints, and
prints debug messages when invalid/reserved types are found in the
HEST. PCI devices not in domain/segment 0 are not represented in
HEST, thus will be ignored.
Today, the PCIe Advanced Error Reporting (AER) driver attaches itself
to every PCIe root port for which BIOS reports it should, via ACPI
_OSC.
However, _OSC alone is insufficient for newer BIOSes. Part of ACPI
4.0 is the new APEI (ACPI Platform Error Interfaces) which is a way
for OS and BIOS to handshake over which errors for which components
each will handle. One table in ACPI 4.0 is the Hardware Error Source
Table (HEST), where BIOS can define that errors for certain PCIe
devices (or all devices), should be handled by BIOS ("Firmware First
mode"), rather than be handled by the OS.
Dell PowerEdge 11G server BIOS defines Firmware First mode in HEST, so
that it may manage such errors, log them to the System Event Log, and
possibly take other actions. The aer driver should honor this, and
not attach itself to devices noted as such.
Furthermore, Kenji Kaneshige reminded us to disallow changing the AER
registers when respecting Firmware First mode. Platform firmware is
expected to manage these, and if changes to them are allowed, it could
break that firmware's behavior.
The HEST parsing code may be replaced in the future by a more
feature-rich implementation. This patch provides the minimum needed
to prevent breakage until that implementation is available.

For non hotplug PCI devices, the system firmware usually configures
CLS correctly. For pccard devices system firmware can't do it and
Linux PCI layer doesn't do it either. Unfortunately this leads to
poor performance for certain devices (sata_sil). Unless MWI, which
requires separate configuration, is to be used, CLS doesn't affect
correctness, so the configuration should be harmless.
This patch makes pci_set_cacheline_size() always built and export it
and make pccard call it during attach.
Please note that some other PCI hotplug drivers (shpchp and pciehp)
also configure CLS on hotplug.

Till now, CLS has been determined either by arch code or as
L1_CACHE_BYTES. Only x86 and ia64 set CLS explicitly and x86 doesn't
always get it right. On most configurations, the chance is that
firmware configures the correct value during boot.
This patch makes pci_init() determine CLS by looking at what firmware
has configured. It scans all devices and if all non-zero values
agree, the value is used. If none is configured or there is a
disagreement, pci_dfl_cache_line_size is used. arch can set the dfl
value (via PCI_CACHE_LINE_BYTES or pci_dfl_cache_line_size) or
override the actual one.
ia64, x86 and sparc64 updated to set the default cls instead of the
actual one.
While at it, declare pci_cache_line_size and pci_dfl_cache_line_size
in pci.h and drop private declarations from arch code.

In general a BIOS may goof or we may hotplug in a hotplug controller.
In either case the kernel needs to reserve resources for plugging
in more devices in the future instead of creating a minimal resource
assignment.
We already do this for cardbus bridges I am just adding a variant
for pcie bridges.
v2: Make testing for pcie hotplug bridges based on a flag.
So far we only set the flag for pcie but a header_quirk
could easily be added for the non-standard pci hotplug
bridges.

Separate out pci_add_dynid() from store_new_id() and export it so that
in-kernel code can add PCI IDs dynamically. As the function will be
available regardless of HOTPLUG, put it and pull pci_free_dynids()
outside of CONFIG_HOTPLUG.
This will be used by pci-stub to initialize initial IDs via module
param.
While at it, remove bogus get_driver() failure check.

This is the first of three patches that implement a bit field that PCI
Express device drivers can use to indicate they need a fundamental reset
during error recovery.
By default, the EEH framework on powerpc does what's known as a "hot
reset" during recovery of a PCI Express device. We've found a case
where the device needs a "fundamental reset" to recover properly. The
current PCI error recovery and EEH frameworks do not support this
distinction.
The attached patch (courtesy of Richard Lary) adds a bit field to
pci_dev that indicates whether the device requires a fundamental reset
during recovery.
These patches supersede the previously submitted patch that implemented
a fundamental reset bit field.

Background:
Graphic devices are accessed through ranges in I/O or memory space. While most
modern devices allow relocation of such ranges, some "Legacy" VGA devices
implemented on PCI will typically have the same "hard-decoded" addresses as
they did on ISA. For more details see "PCI Bus Binding to IEEE Std 1275-1994
Standard for Boot (Initialization Configuration) Firmware Revision 2.1"
Section 7, Legacy Devices.
The Resource Access Control (RAC) module inside the X server currently does
the task of arbitration when more than one legacy device co-exists on the same
machine. But the problem happens when these devices are trying to be accessed
by different userspace clients (e.g. two server in parallel). Their address
assignments conflict. Therefore an arbitration scheme _outside_ of the X
server is needed to control the sharing of these resources. This document
introduces the operation of the VGA arbiter implemented for Linux kernel.

Some devices allow an individual function to be reset without affecting
other functions in the same device: that's what pci_reset_function does.
For devices that have this support, expose reset attribite in sysfs.
This is useful e.g. for virtualization, where a qemu userspace
process wants to reset the device when the guest is reset,
to emulate machine reboot as closely as possible.

1) remove disable_irq() so the shared IRQ won't be disabled.
2) replace the 1s wait with 100, 200 and 400ms wait intervals
for the Pending Transaction.
3) replace mdelay() with msleep().

Based on PCI Express AER specs, a root port might receive multiple
TLP errors while it could only save a correctable error source id
and an uncorrectable error source id at the same time. In addition,
some root port hardware might be unable to provide a correct source
id, i.e., the source id, or the bus id part of the source id provided
by root port might be equal to 0.
The patchset implements the support in kernel by searching the device
tree under the root port.
Patch 1 changes parameter cb of function pci_walk_bus to return a value.
When cb return non-zero, pci_walk_bus stops more searching on the
device tree.

Create symbolic link to hotplug driver module in the PCI slot
directory (/sys/bus/pci/slots/<SLOT#>). In the past, we need to load
hotplug drivers one by one to identify the hotplug driver that handles
the slot, and it was very inconvenient especially for trouble shooting.
With this change, we can easily identify the hotplug driver.

Adds support for PCI Express transaction layer end-to-end CRC checking
(ECRC). This patch will enable/disable ECRC checking by setting/clearing
the ECRC Check Enable and/or ECRC Generation Enable bits for devices that
support ECRC.
The ECRC setting is controlled by the "pci=ecrc=<policy>" command-line
option. If this option is not set or is set to 'bios", the enable and
generation bits are left in whatever state that firmware/BIOS set them to.
The "off" setting turns them off, and the "on" option turns them on (if the
device supports it).
Turning ECRC on or off can be a data integrity versus performance
tradeoff. In theory, turning it on will catch more data errors, turning
it off means possibly better performance since CRC does not need to be
calculated by the PCIe hardware and packet sizes are reduced.

We should not assign 64bit ranges to PCI devices that only take 32bit
prefetchable addresses.
Try to set IORESOURCE_MEM_64 in 64bit resource of pci_device/pci_bridge
and make the bus resource only have that bit set when all devices under
it support 64bit prefetchable memory. Use that flag to allocate
resources from that range.

The PCIe ATS capability makes the Endpoint be able to request the
DMA address translation from the IOMMU and cache the translation
in the device side, thus alleviate IOMMU pressure and improve the
hardware performance in the I/O virtualization environment.

This patch sets up disabled bridges even if buses have already been
added.
pci_assign_unassigned_resources is called after buses are added.
pci_assign_unassigned_resources calls pci_bus_assign_resources.
pci_bus_assign_resources calls pci_setup_bridge to configure BARs of
bridges.
Currently pci_setup_bridge returns immediately if the bus have already
been added. So pci_assign_unassigned_resources can't configure BARs of
bridges that were added in a disabled state; this patch fixes the issue.
On logical hot-add, we need to prevent the kernel from re-initializing
bridges that have already been initialized. To achieve this,
pci_setup_bridge returns immediately if the bridge have already been
enabled.
We don't need to check whether the specified bus is a root bus or not.
pci_setup_bridge is not called on a root bus, because a root bus does
not have a bridge.
The patch adds a new helper function, pci_is_enabled. I made the
function name similar to pci_is_managed. The codes which use
enable_cnt directly are changed to use pci_is_enabled.

Fix trivial append-only conflict in Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt
The radeonfb driver needs to program the device's PMCSR directly due
to some quirky hardware it has to handle (see
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12846 for details) and
after doing that it needs to call the platform (usually ACPI) to
finish the power transition of the device. Currently it uses
pci_set_power_state() for this purpose, however making a specific
assumption about the internal behavior of this function, which has
changed recently so that this assumption is no longer satisfied.
For this reason, introduce __pci_complete_power_transition() that may
be called by the radeonfb driver to complete the power transition of
the device. For symmetry, introduce __pci_start_power_transition().

This API is used by the PCI core to rescan a bus and rediscover
newly added devices.
Over time, it is expected that the various PCI hotplug drivers

If a device has the SR-IOV capability, initialize it (set the ARI
Capable Hierarchy in the lowest numbered PF if necessary; calculate
the System Page Size for the VF MMIO, probe the VF Offset, Stride
and BARs). A lock for the VF bus allocation is also initialized if
a PF is the lowest numbered PF.

This patch makes the ROM reading code return an error to user space if
the size of the ROM read is equal to 0.
The patch also emits a warnings if the contents of the ROM are invalid,
and documents the effects of the "enable" file on ROM reading.

There is a problem in our handling of suspend-resume of PCI devices that
many of them have their standard config registers restored with
interrupts enabled and they are put into the full power state with
interrupts enabled as well. This may lead to the following scenario:
* an interrupt vector is shared between two or more devices
* one device is resumed earlier and generates an interrupt
* the interrupt handler of another device tries to handle it and
attempts to access the device the config space of which hasn't been
restored yet and/or which still is in a low power state
* the system crashes as a result
To prevent this from happening we should restore the standard
configuration registers of all devices with interrupts disabled and we
should put them into the D0 power state right after that.
Unfortunately, this cannot be done using the existing
pci_set_power_state(), because it can sleep. Also, to do it we have to
make sure that the config spaces of all devices were actually saved
during suspend.

During an online device reset it may be useful to disable bus-mastering.
pci_disable_device() does that, and far more besides, so is not suitable
for an online reset.
Add pci_clear_master() which does just this.

This patch adds pci_common_swizzle(), which swizzles INTx values all the
way up to a root bridge.
This common implementation can replace several architecture-specific
ones. This should someday be combined with pci_get_interrupt_pin(),
but I left it separate for now to make reviewing easier.

This patch adds pci_swizzle_interrupt_pin(), which implements the
INTx swizzling algorithm specified in Table 9-1 of the "PCI-to-PCI
Bridge Architecture Specification," revision 1.2.
There are many architecture-specific implementations of this
swizzle that can be replaced by this common one.

Device drivers that use pci_request_regions() (and similar APIs) have a
reasonable expectation that they are the only ones accessing their device.
As part of the e1000e hunt, we were afraid that some userland (X or some
bootsplash stuff) was mapping the MMIO region that the driver thought it
had exclusively via /dev/mem or via various sysfs resource mappings.
This patch adds the option for device drivers to cause their reserved
regions to the "banned from /dev/mem use" list, so now both kernel memory
and device-exclusive MMIO regions are banned.
NOTE: This is only active when CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM is set.
In addition to the config option, a kernel parameter iomem=relaxed is
provided for the cases where developers want to diagnose, in the field,
drivers issues from userspace.

The _OSC capability OSC_EXT_PCI_CONFIG_SUPPORT is set when the root
bridge is added with pci_acpi_osc_support() if we can access PCI
extended config space.
This adds the function pci_ext_cfg_avail which returns true if we can
access PCI extended config space (offset greater than 0xff). It
currently only returns false if arch=x86 and raw_pci_ext_ops is not set
(which might happen if pci=nommcfg is set on the kernel command-line).

PM: Simplify the new suspend/hibernation framework for devices
Following the discussion at the Kernel Summit, simplify the new
device PM framework by merging 'struct pm_ops' and
'struct pm_ext_ops' and removing pointers to 'struct pm_ext_ops'
from 'struct platform_driver' and 'struct pci_driver'.
After this change, the suspend/hibernation callbacks will only
reside in 'struct device_driver' as well as at the bus type/
device class/device type level. Accordingly, PCI and platform
device drivers are now expected to put their suspend/hibernation
callbacks into the 'struct device_driver' embedded in
'struct pci_driver' or 'struct platform_driver', respectively.

Slot detection drivers can co-exist with hotplug drivers. The names
of the detected/claimed slots may be different depending on module
load order.
For legacy reasons, we need to allow hotplug drivers to override
the slot name if a detection driver is loaded first (and they find
the same slots).
Creating and overriding slot names should be an atomic operation,
otherwise you get a locking nightmare as various drivers race to
call pci_create_slot().
pci_create_slot() is already serialized by grabbing the pci_bus_sem.
We update the API and add a 'hotplug' param, which is:
set if the caller is a hotplug driver
NULL if the caller is a detection driver
pci_create_slot() does not actually use the 'hotplug' parameter in this
patch. A later patch will add the logic that uses it.

Ingo pointed out that the m32r build was broken by pci_ioremap. It looks like
some files include pci.h w/o including io.h. The latter defines ioremap_* if
present, so it makes sense to include it in pci.h now that we have pci_ioremap
there.

Sometimes, it's necessary to enable software's ability to quiesce and
reset endpoint hardware with function-level granularity, so provide
support for it.
The patch implement Function Level Reset(FLR) feature following PCI-e
spec. And this is the first step. We would add more generic method, like
D0/D3, to allow more devices support this function.
The patch contains two functions. pcie_reset_function() is the new
driver API, and, contains some action to quiesce a device. The other
function is a helper: pcie_execute_reset_function() just executes the
reset for a particular device function.
Current the usage model is in KVM. Function reset is necessary for
assigning device to a guest, or moving it between partitions.
For Function Level Reset(FLR), please refer to PCI Express spec chapter
6.6.2.

A common thing in many PCI drivers is to ioremap() an entire bar. This
is a slightly fragile thing right now, needing both an address and a
size, and many driver writers do.. various things there.
This patch introduces an pci_ioremap() function taking just a PCI device
struct and the bar number as arguments, and figures this all out itself,
in one place. In addition, we can add various sanity checks to this
function (the patch already checks to make sure that the bar in question
really is a MEM bar; few to no drivers do that sort of thing).
Hopefully with this type of API we get less chance of mistakes in
drivers with ioremap() operations.

This patch adds support for PCI Express Alternative Routing-ID
Interpretation (ARI) capability.
The ARI capability extends the Function Number field of the PCI Express
Endpoint by reusing the Device Number which is otherwise hardwired to 0.
With ARI, an Endpoint can have up to 256 functions.

Many device drivers use the following sequence of statements to enable
the device to wake up the system while being in the D3_hot or D3_cold
low power state:
pci_enable_wake(pdev, PCI_D3hot, 1);
pci_enable_wake(pdev, PCI_D3cold, 1);
However, the second call is not necessary if the first one succeeds (the
ordering of the statements above doesn't matter here) and it may even be
harmful, because we are not supposed to enable PME# after the wake-up
power has been enabled for the device.
To allow drivers to overcome this problem, introduce function
pci_wake_from_d3() that will enable the device to wake up the system
from any of D3_hot and D3_cold as long as the wake-up from at least one
of them is supported.

The driver flag dynids.use_driver_data is almost consistently not set,
and causes more problems than it solves. It was initially intended as a
flag to indicate whether a driver's usage of driver_data had been
carefully inspected and was ready for values from userspace. That audit
was never done, so most drivers just get a 0 for driver_data when new
IDs are added from userspace via sysfs. So remove the flag, allowing
drivers to see the data directly (a followon patch validates the passed
driver_data value against what the drivers expect).

The problem is that u_ether.o is used by two modules so when we build it
KBUILD_MODNAME is not defined because kbuild does not know what value to
use.
And in pci.h we have the following inline:

And alpha uses dma-mapping.h to nullify a number of functions that seem to
require something from pci.h.

*not* addressed. I guess the answer there is "don't do that".

Libata has some hacks to deal with certain controllers going silly in D3
state. The right way to handle this is to keep a PCI device flag for
such devices. That can then be generalised for no ATA devices with power
problems.

* Export pci_pme_capable() so that it can be called directly by
drivers (for example, tg3 needs that).
* Move the state choosing part of pci_prepare_to_sleep() to a
separate function, pci_target_state(), that can be called directly

Fixed up conflicts in various files (arch/x86/kernel/setup_64.c,
arch/x86/pci/irq.c, arch/x86/pci/pci.h, drivers/acpi/sleep/main.c,
drivers/pci/pci.c, drivers/pci/pci.h, include/acpi/acpi_bus.h) from x86
and ACPI updates manually.
Some chipsets (e.g. intel 6700PXH) generate a legacy INTx when the
IRQ entry in the chipset's IO-APIC is masked (as, e.g. the RT kernel
does during interrupt handling). On chipsets where this INTx generation
cannot be disabled, we reroute the valid interrupts to their legacy
equivalent to get rid of spurious interrupts that might otherwise bring
down (vital) interrupt lines through spurious interrupt detection in
note_interrupt().
This patch benefited from discussions with Alexander Graf, Torsten Duwe,
Ihno Krumreich, Daniel Gollub, Hannes Reinecke. The conclusions we drew
and the patch itself are the authors' responsibility alone.

If the offset of PCI device's PM capability in its configuration space,
the mask of states that the device supports PME# from and the D1 and D2
support bits are cached in the corresponding struct pci_dev, the PCI
device PM code can be simplified quite a bit.

Introduce functions pci_prepare_to_sleep() and pci_back_from_sleep(),
to be used by the PCI drivers that want to place their devices into
the lowest power state appropiate for them (PCI_D3hot, if the device
is not supposed to wake up the system, or the deepest state from
which the wake-up is possible, otherwise) while the system is being
prepared to go into a sleeping state and to put them back into D0
during the subsequent transition to the working state.

Currently, /sys/bus/pci/slots/ only exposes hotplug attributes when a
hotplug driver is loaded, but PCI slots have attributes such as address,
speed, width, etc. that are not related to hotplug at all.
Introduce pci_slot as the primary data structure and kobject model.
Hotplug attributes described in hotplug_slot become a secondary
structure associated with the pci_slot.
This patch only creates the infrastructure that allows the separation of
PCI slot attributes and hotplug attributes. In this patch, the PCI
hotplug core remains the only user of this infrastructure, and thus,
/sys/bus/pci/slots/ will still only become populated when a hotplug
driver is loaded.
A later patch in this series will add a second user of this new
infrastructure and demonstrate splitting the task of exposing pci_slot
attributes from hotplug_slot attributes.
- Make pci_slot the primary sysfs entity. hotplug_slot becomes a
subsidiary structure.
o pci_create_slot() creates and registers a slot with the PCI core
o pci_slot_add_hotplug() gives it hotplug capability
- Change the prototype of pci_hp_register() to take the bus and
slot number (on parent bus) as parameters.
- Remove all the ->get_address methods since this functionality is
now handled by pci_slot directly.

Some quirks should be called with interrupt disabled, we can't directly
call them in .resume_early. Also the patch introduces
pci_fixup_resume_early and pci_fixup_suspend, which matches current
device core callbacks (.suspend/.resume_early).
TBD: Somebody knows why we need quirk resume should double check if a
quirk should be called in resume or resume_early. I changed some per my
understanding, but can't make sure I fixed all.

Fix following section mismatch warning:
WARNING: vmlinux.o(.text+0x275616): Section mismatch in reference from the function pci_scan_bus() to the function .devinit.text:pci_scan_bus_parented()
The warning was seen with a CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y build.
The inline function pci_scan_bus refer to functions annotated
__devinit - so annotate it __devinit too.
This revealed a few x86 specific functions that were only
used from __init or __devinit context.
So annotate these __devinit and the warning was killed.
The added include in pci.h was not strictly required but
added to avoid being dependent on indirect includes.

Causes the kexec of a RHEL 5.1 kernel to fail.
root casue: the rhel 5.1 kernel still uses INTx emulation. and
mptscsih_shutdown doesn't call pci_disable_msi to reenable INTx on kexec path
So call pci_msi_shutdown in the shutdown path to do the same thing to msix

scan AMD opteron io/mmio routing to make sure every pci root bus get correct
resource range. Thus later pci scan could assign correct resource to device

This path adds validation of the MMCONFIG table against the ACPI reserved
motherboard resources. If the MMCONFIG table is found to be reserved in
ACPI, we don't bother checking the E820 table. The PCI Express firmware
spec apparently tells BIOS developers that reservation in ACPI is required
and E820 reservation is optional, so checking against ACPI first makes
sense. Many BIOSes don't reserve the MMCONFIG region in E820 even though
it is perfectly functional, the existing check needlessly disables MMCONFIG
in these cases.
In order to do this, MMCONFIG setup has been split into two phases. If PCI
configuration type 1 is not available then MMCONFIG is enabled early as
before. Otherwise, it is enabled later after the ACPI interpreter is
enabled, since we need to be able to execute control methods in order to
check the ACPI reserved resources. Presently this is just triggered off
the end of ACPI interpreter initialization.
There are a few other behavioral changes here:
- Validate all MMCONFIG configurations provided, not just the first one.
- Validate the entire required length of each configuration according to
the provided ending bus number is reserved, not just the minimum required
allocation.
- Validate that the area is reserved even if we read it from the chipset
directly and not from the MCFG table. This catches the case where the
BIOS didn't set the location properly in the chipset and has mapped it
over other things it shouldn't have.
This also cleans up the MMCONFIG initialization functions so that they
simply do nothing if MMCONFIG is not compiled in.

Vital Product Data (VPD) may be exposed by PCI devices in several
ways. It is generally unsafe to read this information through the
existing interfaces to user-land because of stateful interfaces.
This adds:
- abstract operations for VPD access (struct pci_vpd_ops)
- VPD state information in struct pci_dev (struct pci_vpd)
- an implementation of the VPD access method specified in PCI 2.2
(in access.c)
- a 'vpd' binary file in sysfs directories for PCI devices with VPD
operations defined
It adds a probe for PCI 2.2 VPD in pci_scan_device() and release of
VPD state in pci_release_dev().

Each architecture has its own pcibios_enable_resources() implementation.
These differ in many minor ways that have nothing to do with actual
architectural differences. Follow-on patches will make most arches
use this generic version instead.
This version is based on powerpc, which seemed most up-to-date. The only
functional difference from the x86 version is that this uses "!r->parent"
to check for resource collisions instead of "!r->start && r->end".

PCI Express ASPM defines a protocol for PCI Express components in the D0
state to reduce Link power by placing their Links into a low power state
and instructing the other end of the Link to do likewise. This
capability allows hardware-autonomous, dynamic Link power reduction
beyond what is achievable by software-only controlled power management.
However, The device should be configured by software appropriately.
Enabling ASPM will save power, but will introduce device latency.
This patch adds ASPM support in Linux. It introduces a global policy for
ASPM, a sysfs file /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy can control
it. The interface can be used as a boot option too. Currently we have
below setting:
-default, BIOS default setting
-powersave, highest power saving mode, enable all available ASPM
state and clock power management
-performance, highest performance, disable ASPM and clock power
management
By default, the 'default' policy is used currently.
In my test, power difference between powersave mode and performance mode
is about 1.3w in a system with 3 PCIE links.
Note: some devices might not work well with aspm, either because chipset
issue or device issue. The patch provide API (pci_disable_link_state),
driver can disable ASPM for specific device.

relying entirely on the list held in the driver core now, and do not
need a separate "shadow" list as no one uses it.

This lets us check if the device is really added to the driver core or
not, which is what we need when walking some of the bus lists. The flag
is there in anticipation of getting rid of the other PCI device list,
which is what we used to check in this situation.

This cleans up the search.c file, now using the pci list of devices that
are created for the driver core, instead of relying on our separate list
of devices. It's better to use the functions already created for this
kind of thing, instead of rolling our own all the time.
This work is done in anticipation of getting rid of that second list of
pci devices all together.
And it ends up saving code, always a nice benefit.
This also removes one compiler warning for when CONFIG_PCI_LEGACY is
enabled as we no longer internally use the deprecated functions anymore.

The definitions of struct pci_device_id arrays should generally follow
the same pattern across the entire kernel. This macro defines this
array as const and puts it into the __devinitconst section.
There are currently many definitions scattered about the kernel that
omit the __devinitdata modifier despite the documentation stating that
it should always be there. These definitions really also should have
been const, which wasn't possible before but has become so with the
addition of the __devinitconst attribute.
Furthermore, there are definitions that use "const" and __devinitdata,
which is explicitly wrong but the compiler doesn't catch section
mismatches if there's only one such one case in the module (which is
often the case).
Adding the __devinitconst modifier where there was nothing before buys
us memory. Adding the const modifier gives the compiler a chance to do
its thing. Changing __devinitdata to __devinitconst where it was wrong
actually fixes some compiler errors in older (mid-release) kernels that
were patched over by "removing" the section attribute altogether (which
wastes memory).
This macro makes it pretty difficult to get this definition wrong in
the future...

We want to allow different implementations of pci_raw_ops for standard
and extended config space on x86. Rather than clutter generic code with
knowledge of this, we make pci_raw_ops private to x86 and use it to
implement the new raw interface -- raw_pci_read() and raw_pci_write().

This moves the pci_bus class device to be a real struct device and at
the same time, place it in the device tree in the correct location.
Note, the old "bridge" symlink is now gone, but this was a non-standard
link and no userspace program used it. If you need to determine the
device that the bus is on, follow the standard device symlink, or walk
up the device tree.

The pci_enable_device_bars() interface isn't well suited to PCI
because you can't actually enable/disable BARs individually on
a device. So for example, if a device has 2 memory BARs 0 and 1,
and one of them (let's say 1) has not been successfully allocated
by the firmware or the kernel, then enabling memory decoding
shouldn't be permitted for the entire device since it will decode
whatever random address is still in that BAR 1.
So a device must be either fully enabled for IO, for Memory, or
for both. Not on a per-BAR basis.
This provides two new functions, pci_enable_device_io() and
pci_enable_device_mem() to replace pci_enable_device_bars(). The
implementation internally builds a BAR mask in order to be able
to use existing arch infrastructure.

The current pci_assign_unassigned_resources() code doesn't work properly
on 32 bits platforms with 64 bits resources. The main reason is the use
of unsigned long in various places instead of resource_size_t.
This is a pre-requisite for making powerpc use the generic code instead of
its own half-useful implementation.

PCI error recovery usually involves the PCI adapter being reset.
If the device is using MSI, the reset will cause the MSI state
to be lost; the device driver needs to restore the MSI state.
The pci_restore_msi_state() routine is currently protected
by CONFIG_PM; remove this, and also export the symbol, so
that it can be used in a modle.

A reasonably common problem with some devices is that they will
disable MSI generation when the INTX_DISABLE bit is set in the
PCI_COMMAND register.
Quirk this explicitly, guarding the pci_intx() calls in msi.c with
this quirk indication.
The first entries for this quirk are for 5714 and 5780 Tigon3 chips,
and thus we can remove the workaround code from the tg3.c driver.

When devices are under a p2p bridge, upstream transactions get replaced by the
device id of the bridge as it owns the PCIE transaction. Hence its necessary
to setup translations on behalf of the bridge as well. Due to this limitation
all devices under a p2p share the same domain in a DMAR.
We just cache the type of device, if its a native PCIe device
or not for later use.

Some odd ACPI implementations choke if certain controller is disabled
when ACPI suspend is invoked but we still need to make sure the PCI
device is enabled during resume. Simply using pci_enable_device()
unbalances device enable count. Export __pci_reenable_device().

Before calling init_hwif_default, ide_unregister gets lock ide_lock and
disables irq. init_hwif_default calls ide_default_io_base which calls
pci_get_device and later pci_get_subsys tries to apply for semaphore
pci_bus_sem and goes to sleep.
Mostly, pci_get_device should be called when irq is turned on.
ide_default_io_base just needs find if list pci_devices is empty.

Currently there are 97 occurrences where drivers need the pci
revision ID. We can do this once for all devices. Even the pci
subsystem needs the revision several times for quirks. The extra
u8 member pads out nicely in the pci_dev struct.

This patch introduces an interface to read and write PCI-X / PCI-Express
maximum read byte count values from PCI config space. There is a second
function that returns the maximum _designed_ read byte count, which marks the
maximum value for a device, since some drivers try to set MMRBC to the
highest allowed value and rely on such a function.

Now that we keep a list of msi descriptors, we don't need first_msi_irq
in the pci dev.
If we somehow have zero MSIs configured list_entry() will give us weird
oopes or nice memory corruption bugs. So be paranoid. Add BUG_ONs and also
a check in pci_msi_check_device() to make sure nvec > 0.

The msi descriptors are linked together with what looks a lot like
a linked list, but isn't a struct list_head list. Make it one.
The only complication is that previously we walked a list of irqs, and
got the descriptor for each with get_irq_msi(). Now we have a list of
descriptors and need to get the irq out of it, so it needs to be in the
actual struct msi_desc. We use 0 to indicate no irq is setup.

There are currently several places in the kernel where we kmalloc()
a struct pci_dev and start initialising it. It'd be preferable to
have an allocator so we can ensure the pci_dev is correctly initialised
in one place.

Adds a new API which can be used to issue various types
of PCI-E reset, including PCI-E warm reset and PCI-E hot reset.
This is needed for an ipr PCI-E adapter which does not properly
implement BIST. Running BIST on this adapter results in PCI-E
errors. The only reliable reset mechanism that exists on this
hardware is PCI Fundamental reset (warm reset). Since driving
this type of reset is architecture unique, this provides the
necessary hooks for architectures to add this support.

Make multithreaded probing work per subsystem instead of per driver.
It doesn't make much sense to probe the same device for multiple drivers in
parallel (after all, only one driver can bind to the device). Instead, create
a probing thread for each device that probes the drivers one after another.
Also make the decision to use multi-threaded probe per bus instead of per
device and adapt the pci code.

Because we do not reserve space for the pci-x and pci-e state in struct
pci dev we need to dynamically allocate it. However because we need
to support restore being called multiple times after a single save
it is never safe to free the buffers we have allocated to hold the
state.
So this patch modifies the save routines to first check to see
if we have already allocated a state buffer before allocating
a new one. Then the restore routines are modified to not free
the state after restoring it. Simple and it fixes some subtle
error path handling bugs, that are hard to test for.

In some cases when we are not using msi we need a way to ensure that the
hardware does not have an msi capability enabled. Currently the code has been
calling disable_msi_mode to try and achieve that. However disable_msi_mode
has several other side effects and is only available when msi support is
compiled in so it isn't really appropriate.
Instead this patch implements pci_msi_off which disables all msi and msix
capabilities unconditionally with no additional side effects.
pci_disable_device was redundantly clearing the bus master enable flag and
clearing the msi enable bit. A device that is not allowed to perform bus
mastering operations cannot generate intx or msi interrupt messages as those
are essentially a special case of dma, and require bus mastering. So the call
in pci_disable_device to disable msi capabilities was redundant.
quirk_pcie_pxh also called disable_msi_mode and is updated to use pci_msi_off.

CARDBUS_MEM_SIZE was increased to 64MB on 2.6.20-rc2, but larger size might
result in allocation failure for the reserving itself on some platforms
(for example typical 32bit MIPS). Make it (and CARDBUS_IO_SIZE too)
customizable by "pci=" option for such platforms.

Implement device resource management, in short, devres. A device
driver can allocate arbirary size of devres data which is associated
with a release function. On driver detach, release function is
invoked on the devres data, then, devres data is freed.
devreses are typed by associated release functions. Some devreses are
better represented by single instance of the type while others need
multiple instances sharing the same release function. Both usages are
supported.
devreses can be grouped using devres group such that a device driver
can easily release acquired resources halfway through initialization
or selectively release resources (e.g. resources for port 1 out of 4
ports).
This patch adds devres core including documentation and the following
managed interfaces.

The function msi_lookup_irq was horrible. As a side effect of running
it changed dev->irq, and then the callers would need to change it
back. In addition it does a global scan through all of the irqs,
which seems to be the sole justification of the msi_lock.
To remove the neede for msi_lookup_irq I added first_msi_irq to struct
pci_dev. Then depending on the context I replaced msi_lookup_irq with
dev->first_msi_irq, dev->msi_enabled, or dev->msix_enabled.
msi_enabled and msix_enabled were already present in pci_dev for other
reasons.

This patch adds the following changes into generic PCI code especially
for PCI legacy I/O port free drivers.
- Added new pci_request_selected_regions() and
pci_release_selected_regions() for PCI legacy I/O port free
drivers in order to request/release only the selected regions.
- Added helper routine pci_select_bars() which makes proper mask
of BARs from the specified resource type. This would be very
helpful for users of pci_enable_device_bars().

kernel or not. It will show up in /sys/modules/MODULE_NAME/drivers/
It also fixes up the IDE core, which was calling __pci_register_driver()

This patch is designed to fix:
- Disk eating corruptor on KT7 after resume from RAM
- VIA IRQ handling
- VIA fixups for bus lockups after resume from RAM
The core of this is to add a table of resume fixups run at resume time.
We need to do this for a variety of boards and features, but particularly
we need to do this to get various critical VIA fixups done on resume.
The second part of the problem is to handle VIA IRQ number rules which
are a bit odd and need special handling for PIC interrupts. Various
patches broke various boxes and while this one may not be perfect
(hopefully it is) it ensures the workaround is applied to the right
devices only.

There are already several places in the kernel that want to search a PCI
device for a given Hypertransport capability. Although this is possible
using pci_find_capability() etc., it makes sense to encapsulate that
logic in a helper - pci_find_ht_capability().
To cater for searching exhaustively for a capability, we also provide
pci_find_next_ht_capability().
We also need to cater for the fact that the HT capability fields may be
either 3 or 5 bits wide. pci_find_ht_capability() deals with this for you,
but callers using the #defines directly must handle that themselves.

This works like pci_dev_present but instead of returning boolean returns
the matching pci_device_id entry. This makes it much more useful. Code
bloat is basically nil as the old boolean function is rewritten in terms of
the new one.

Changes the pci_{enable,disable}_device() functions to work in a
nested basis, so that eg, three calls to enable_device() require three
calls to disable_device().
The reason for this is to simplify PCI drivers for
multi-interface/capability devices. These are devices that cram more
than one interface in a single function. A relevant example of that is
the Wireless [USB] Host Controller Interface (similar to EHCI) [see
http://www.intel.com/technology/comms/wusb/whci.htm].
In these kind of devices, multiple interfaces are accessed through a
single bar and IRQ line. For that, the drivers map only the smallest
area of the bar to access their register banks and use shared IRQ
handlers.
However, because the order at which those drivers load cannot be known
ahead of time, the sequence in which the calls to pci_enable_device()
and pci_disable_device() cannot be predicted. Thus:
1. driverA starts pci_enable_device()
2. driverB starts pci_enable_device()
3. driverA shutdown pci_disable_device()
4. driverB shutdown pci_disable_device()
between steps 3 and 4, driver B would loose access to it's device,
even if it didn't intend to.
By using this modification, the device won't be disabled until all the
callers to enable() have called disable().
This is implemented by replacing 'struct pci_dev->is_enabled' from a
bitfield to an atomic use count. Each caller to enable increments it,
each caller to disable decrements it. When the count increments from 0
to 1, __pci_enable_device() is called to actually enable the
device. When it drops to zero, pci_disable_device() actually does the
disabling.
We keep the backend __pci_enable_device() for pci_default_resume() to
use and also change the sysfs method implementation, so that userspace
enabling/disabling the device doesn't disable it one time too much.

Problem:
New Dell PowerEdge servers have 2 embedded ethernet ports, which are
labeled NIC1 and NIC2 on the chassis, in the BIOS setup screens, and
in the printed documentation. Assuming no other add-in ethernet ports
in the system, Linux 2.4 kernels name these eth0 and eth1
respectively. Many people have come to expect this naming. Linux 2.6
kernels name these eth1 and eth0 respectively (backwards from
expectations). I also have reports that various Sun and HP servers
have similar behavior.
Root cause:
Linux 2.4 kernels walk the pci_devices list, which happens to be
sorted in breadth-first order (or pcbios_find_device order on i386,
which most often is breadth-first also). 2.6 kernels have both the
pci_devices list and the pci_bus_type.klist_devices list, the latter
is what is walked at driver load time to match the pci_id tables; this
klist happens to be in depth-first order.
On systems where, for physical routing reasons, NIC1 appears on a
lower bus number than NIC2, but NIC2's bridge is discovered first in
the depth-first ordering, NIC2 will be discovered before NIC1. If the
list were sorted breadth-first, NIC1 would be discovered before NIC2.
A PowerEdge 1955 system has the following topology which easily
exhibits the difference between depth-first and breadth-first device
lists.

Other factors, such as device driver load order and the presence of
PCI slots at various points in the bus hierarchy further complicate
this problem; I'm not trying to solve those here, just restore the
device order, and thus basic behavior, that 2.4 kernels had.
Solution:
The solution can come in multiple steps.
Suggested fix#1: kernel
Patch below optionally sorts the two device lists into breadth-first
ordering to maintain compatibility with 2.4 kernels. It adds two new
command line options:
pci=bfsort
pci=nobfsort
to force the sort order, or not, as you wish. It also adds DMI checks
for the specific Dell systems which exhibit "backwards" ordering, to
make them "right".
Suggested fix#2: udev rules from userland
Many people also have the expectation that embedded NICs are always
discovered before add-in NICs (which this patch does not try to do).
Using the PCI IRQ Routing Table provided by system BIOS, it's easy to
determine which PCI devices are embedded, or if add-in, which PCI slot
they're in. I'm working on a tool that would allow udev to name
ethernet devices in ascending embedded, slot 1 .. slot N order,
subsort by PCI bus/dev/fn breadth-first. It'll be possible to use it
independent of udev as well for those distributions that don't use
udev in their installers.
Suggested fix#3: system board routing rules
One can constrain the system board layout to put NIC1 ahead of NIC2
regardless of breadth-first or depth-first discovery order. This adds
a significant level of complexity to board routing, and may not be
possible in all instances (witness the above systems from several
major manufacturers). I don't want to encourage this particular train
of thought too far, at the expense of not doing #1 or #2 above.
Feedback appreciated. Patch tested on a Dell PowerEdge 1955 blade
with 2.6.18.
You'll also note I took some liberty and temporarily break the klist
abstraction to simplify and speed up the sort algorithm. I think
that's both safe and appropriate in this instance.
