Ingo Molnar 74019224ac timers: add mod_timer_pending()
Impact: new timer API

Based on an idea from Martin Josefsson with the help of
Patrick McHardy and Stephen Hemminger:

introduce the mod_timer_pending() API which is a mod_timer()
offspring that is an invariant on already removed timers.

(regular mod_timer() re-activates non-pending timers.)

This is useful for the networking code in that it can
allow unserialized mod_timer_pending() timer-forwarding
calls, but a single del_timer*() will stop the timer
from being reactivated again.

Also while at it:

- optimize the regular mod_timer() path some more, the
  timer-stat and a debug check was needlessly duplicated
  in __mod_timer().

- make the exports come straight after the function, as
  most other exports in timer.c already did.

- eliminate __mod_timer() as an external API, change the
  users to mod_timer().

The regular mod_timer() code path is not impacted
significantly, due to inlining optimizations and due to
the simplifications.

Martin Schwidefsky 79741dd357 [PATCH] idle cputime accounting
The cpu time spent by the idle process actually doing something is
currently accounted as idle time. This is plain wrong, the architectures
that support VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING=y can do better: distinguish between the
time spent doing nothing and the time spent by idle doing work. The first
is accounted with account_idle_time and the second with account_system_time.
The architectures that use the account_xxx_time interface directly and not
the account_xxx_ticks interface now need to do the check for the idle
process in their arch code. In particular to improve the system vs true
idle time accounting the arch code needs to measure the true idle time
instead of just testing for the idle process.
To improve the tick based accounting as well we would need an architecture
primitive that can tell us if the pt_regs of the interrupted context
points to the magic instruction that halts the cpu.

In addition idle time is no more added to the stime of the idle process.
This field now contains the system time of the idle process as it should
be. On systems without VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING this will always be zero as
every tick that occurs while idle is running will be accounted as idle
time.

This patch contains the necessary common code changes to be able to
distinguish idle system time and true idle time. The architectures with
support for VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING need some changes to exploit this.

Martin Schwidefsky 457533a7d3 [PATCH] fix scaled & unscaled cputime accounting
The utimescaled / stimescaled fields in the task structure and the
global cpustat should be set on all architectures. On s390 the calls
to account_user_time_scaled and account_system_time_scaled never have
been added. In addition system time that is accounted as guest time
to the user time of a process is accounted to the scaled system time
instead of the scaled user time.
To fix the bugs and to prevent future forgetfulness this patch merges
account_system_time_scaled into account_system_time and
account_user_time_scaled into account_user_time.

Thomas Gleixner 06d8308c61 NOHZ: reevaluate idle sleep length after add_timer_on()
add_timer_on() can add a timer on a CPU which is currently in a long
idle sleep, but the timer wheel is not reevaluated by the nohz code on
that CPU. So a timer can be delayed for quite a long time. This
triggered a false positive in the clocksource watchdog code.

To avoid this we need to wake up the idle CPU and enforce the
reevaluation of the timer wheel for the next timer event.

Add a function, which checks a given CPU for idle state, marks the
idle task with NEED_RESCHED and sends a reschedule IPI to notify the
other CPU of the change in the timer wheel.

Call this function from add_timer_on().

Michael Neuling 06b8e878a9 taskstats scaled time cleanup
This moves the ability to scale cputime into generic code. This allows us
to fix the issue in kernel/timer.c (noticed by Balbir) where we could only
add an unscaled value to the scaled utime/stime.

This adds a cputime_to_scaled function. As before, the POWERPC version
does the scaling based on the last SPURR/PURR ratio calculated. The
generic and s390 (only other arch to implement asm/cputime.h) versions are
both NOPs.

Also moves the SPURR and PURR snapshots closer.

Paul Mackerras fa13a5a1f2 sched: restore deterministic CPU accounting on powerpc
Since powerpc started using CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, the
deterministic CPU accounting (CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING) has been
broken on powerpc, because we end up counting user time twice: once in
timer_interrupt() and once in update_process_times().

This fixes the problem by pulling the code in update_process_times
that updates utime and stime into a separate function called
account_process_tick. If CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING is not defined,
there is a version of account_process_tick in kernel/timer.c that
simply accounts a whole tick to either utime or stime as before. If
CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING is defined, then arch code gets to
implement account_process_tick.

This also lets us simplify the s390 code a bit; it means that the s390
timer interrupt can now call update_process_times even when
CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING is turned on, and can just implement a
suitable account_process_tick().

account_process_tick() now takes the task_struct * as an argument.
Tested both with and without CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING.

Pavel Emelyanov b488893a39 pid namespaces: changes to show virtual ids to user
This is the largest patch in the set. Make all (I hope) the places where
the pid is shown to or get from user operate on the virtual pids.

The idea is:
 - all in-kernel data structures must store either struct pid itself
   or the pid's global nr, obtained with pid_nr() call;
 - when seeking the task from kernel code with the stored id one
   should use find_task_by_pid() call that works with global pids;
 - when showing pid's numerical value to the user the virtual one
   should be used, but however when one shows task's pid outside this
   task's namespace the global one is to be used;
 - when getting the pid from userspace one need to consider this as

Thomas Gleixner eaad084bb0 NOHZ: prevent multiplication overflow - stop timer for huge timeouts
get_next_timer_interrupt() returns a delta of (LONG_MAX > 1) in case
there is no timer pending. On 64 bit machines this results in a
multiplication overflow in tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick().

Reported by: Dave Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

Make the return value a constant and limit the return value to a 32 bit
value.

When the max timeout value is returned, we can safely stop the tick
timer device. The max jiffies delta results in a 12 days timeout for
HZ=1000.

In the long term the get_next_timer_interrupt() code needs to be
reworked to return ktime instead of jiffies, but we have to wait until
the last users of the original NO_IDLE_HZ code are converted.

Thomas Gleixner b52f52a093 clocksource: fix resume logic
We need to make sure that the clocksources are resumed, when timekeeping is
resumed. The current resume logic does not guarantee this.

Add a resume function pointer to the clocksource struct, so clocksource
drivers which need to reinitialize the clocksource can provide a resume
function.

Add a resume function, which calls the maybe available clocksource resume
functions and resets the watchdog function, so a stable TSC can be used
accross suspend/resume.

Rafael J. Wysocki 8bb7844286 Add suspend-related notifications for CPU hotplug
Since nonboot CPUs are now disabled after tasks and devices have been
frozen and the CPU hotplug infrastructure is used for this purpose, we need
special CPU hotplug notifications that will help the CPU-hotplug-aware
subsystems distinguish normal CPU hotplug events from CPU hotplug events
related to a system-wide suspend or resume operation in progress. This
patch introduces such notifications and causes them to be used during
suspend and resume transitions. It also changes all of the
CPU-hotplug-aware subsystems to take these notifications into consideration
(for now they are handled in the same way as the corresponding "normal"
ones).

There are many places in the kernel where the construction like

Venki Pallipadi 6e453a6751 Add support for deferrable timers
Introduce a new flag for timers - deferrable: Timers that work normally
when system is busy. But, will not cause CPU to come out of idle (just to
service this timer), when CPU is idle. Instead, this timer will be
serviced when CPU eventually wakes up with a subsequent non-deferrable
timer.

The main advantage of this is to avoid unnecessary timer interrupts when
CPU is idle. If the routine currently called by a timer can wait until
next event without any issues, this new timer can be used to setup timer
event for that routine. This, with dynticks, allows CPUs to be lazy,
allowing them to stay in idle for extended period of time by reducing
unnecesary wakeup and thereby reducing the power consumption.

This patch:

Builds this new timer on top of existing timer infrastructure. It uses
last bit in 'base' pointer of timer_list structure to store this deferrable
timer flag. __next_timer_interrupt() function skips over these deferrable
timers when CPU looks for next timer event for which it has to wake up.

This is exported by a new interface init_timer_deferrable() that can be
called in place of regular init_timer().

Thomas Gleixner 9501b6cf55 [PATCH] dynticks: fix hrtimer rounding error in next_timer_interrupt
The rework of next_timer_interrupt() fixed the timer wheel bugs, but
invented a rounding error versus the next hrtimer event. This is caused
by the conversion of the hrtimer internal representation to relative
jiffies.

This causes bug #8100:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8100

next_timer_interrupt() returns "now" in such a case and causes the code
in tick_nohz_stop_sched_tick() to trigger the timer softirq, which is
bogus as no timer is due for expiry. This results in an endless context
switching between idle and ksoftirqd until a timer is due for expiry.

Modify the hrtimer evaluation so that, it returns now + 1, when the
conversion results in a delta < 1 jiffie.

It's confirmed to resolve bug #8100

Thomas Gleixner 6321dd60c7 [PATCH] Save/restore periodic tick information over suspend/resume
The programming of periodic tick devices needs to be saved/restored
across suspend/resume - otherwise we might end up with a system coming

  # echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/online
  # echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/online
  # echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online

will give me this:

  =======================================================
  [ INFO: possible circular locking dependency detected ]
  2.6.21-rc2-g562aa1d4-dirty #7
  -------------------------------------------------------
  bash/1282 is trying to acquire lock:

  but task is already holding lock:
   (&cpu_base->lock_key#2){.+..}, at: [<000000000005f174>] hrtimer_cpu_notify+0xbc/0x240

  which lock already depends on the new lock.

This happens because we have the following code in kernel/hrtimer.c:

  migrate_hrtimers(int cpu)
  [...]
  old_base = &per_cpu(hrtimer_bases, cpu);
  new_base = &get_cpu_var(hrtimer_bases);
  [...]
  spin_lock(&new_base->lock);
  spin_lock(&old_base->lock);

Which means the spinlocks are taken in an order which depends on which cpu
gets shut down from which other cpu. Therefore lockdep complains that there
might be an ABBA deadlock. Since migrate_hrtimers() gets only called on
cpu hotplug it's safe to assume that it isn't executed concurrently on a

The same problem exists in kernel/timer.c: migrate_timers().

As pointed out by Christian Borntraeger one possible solution to avoid
the locking order complaints would be to make sure that the locks are
always taken in the same order. E.g. by taking the lock of the cpu with
the lower number first.

To achieve this we introduce two new spinlock functions double_spin_lock
and double_spin_unlock which lock or unlock two locks in a given order.

between tick based and high resolution timer based dynticks. The dyntick
functionality can be disabled on the kernel commandline. Provide also the
infrastructure to support high resolution timers.

Thomas Gleixner d316c57ff6 [PATCH] clockevents: add core functionality
Architectures register their clock event devices, in the clock events core.
Users of the clockevents core can get clock event devices for their use. The
clockevents core code provides notification mechanisms for various clock
related management events.

This allows to control the clock event devices without the architectures
having to worry about the details of function assignment. This is also a
preliminary for high resolution timers and dynamic ticks to allow the core
code to control the clock functionality without intrusive changes to the
architecture code.

Thomas Gleixner fd064b9b77 [PATCH] Extend next_timer_interrupt() to use a reference jiffie
For CONFIG_NO_HZ we need to calculate the next timer wheel event based on a

argument. Provide a compability function for the existing implementations to
call the function with now == jiffies. (This also solves the racyness of the
original code vs. jiffies changing during the iteration.)

Thomas Gleixner 1cfd68496e [PATCH] Fix cascade lookup of next_timer_interrupt
When searching for the next pending timer in the timer wheel we need to take
the cascade into account. The current code has several problems:

 1. it looks into the previous cascade
 2. it ignores a pending cascade
 3. it ignores multiple cascades

Change the cascade lookup, so it calculates the array index from the point of
the next cascade and always look at the cascade buckets, when the cascade is
pending, i.e. gets executed in the next timer softirq. When multiple
cascades are pending, then lookup the next buckets too.

Eric Dumazet 5809f9d442 [PATCH] x86-64: get rid of ARCH_HAVE_XTIME_LOCK
ARCH_HAVE_XTIME_LOCK is used by x86_64 arch . This arch needs to place a
read only copy of xtime_lock into vsyscall page. This read only copy is
named __xtime_lock, and xtime_lock is defined in
arch/x86_64/kernel/vmlinux.lds.S as an alias. So the declaration of
xtime_lock in kernel/timer.c was guarded by ARCH_HAVE_XTIME_LOCK define,
defined to true on x86_64.

We can get same result with _attribute__((weak)) in the declaration. linker

Helge Deller 3db5db4fcd [PATCH] use cycle_t instead of u64 in struct time_interpolator
The 32bit and 64bit PARISC Linux kernels suffers from the problem, that the
gettimeofday() call sometimes returns non-monotonic times.

The easiest way to fix this, is to drop the PARISC-specific implementation
and switch over to the generic TIME_INTERPOLATION framework.

But in order to make it even compile on 32bit PARISC, the patch below which
touches the generic Linux code, is mandatory.

More information and the full patch with the parisc-specific changes is included in this thread: http://lists.parisc-linux.org/pipermail/parisc-linux/2006-December/031003.html

As far as I could see, this patch does not change anything for the existing
architectures which use this framework (IA64 and SPARC64), since "cycles_t"
is defined there as unsigned 64bit-integer anyway (which then makes this
patch a no-change for them).

Eric Dumazet cd7175edf9 [PATCH] Optimize calc_load()
calc_load() is called by timer interrupt to update avenrun[]. It currently
calls nr_active() at each timer tick (HZ per second), while the update of
avenrun[] is done only once every 5 seconds. (LOAD_FREQ=5 Hz)

nr_active() is quite expensive on SMP machines, since it has to sum up
nr_running and nr_uninterruptible of all online CPUS, bringing foreign
dirty cache lines.

This patch is an optimization of calc_load() so that nr_active() is called
only if we need it.

The use of unlikely() is welcome since the condition is true only once every
5*HZ time.

Arjan van de Ven 4c36a5dec2 [PATCH] round_jiffies infrastructure
Introduce a round_jiffies() function as well as a round_jiffies_relative()
function. These functions round a jiffies value to the next whole second.
The primary purpose of this rounding is to cause all "we don't care exactly
when" timers to happen at the same jiffy.

This avoids multiple timers firing within the second for no real reason;
with dynamic ticks these extra timers cause wakeups from deep sleep CPU
sleep states and thus waste power.

The exact wakeup moment is skewed by the cpu number, to avoid all cpus from
waking up at the exact same time (and hitting the same lock/cachelines
there)

With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies.
So we can kill wall_jiffies completely.

This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior
except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a
condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I
suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of
kill the whole "if" block.

Atsushi Nemoto 3171a0305d [PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)
Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390

Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but
callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks
get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy
pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky.

This cleanup make a barrier added by
5aee405c66 needless. So this patch removes
it.

As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now
wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really

Steven Rostedt 6ea24f9ad1 [PATCH] fix bad macro param in timer.c
We have

#define INDEX(N) (base->timer_jiffies >> (TVR_BITS + N * TVN_BITS)) & TVN_MASK

and it's used via

	list = varray[i + 1]->vec + (INDEX(i + 1));

So, due to underparenthesisation, this INDEX(i+1) is now a ...  (TVR_BITS + i
+ 1 * TVN_BITS)) ...

So this bugfix changes behaviour. It worked before by sheer luck:

  "If i was anything but 0, it was broken. But this was only used by
   s390 and arm. Since it was for the next interrupt, could that next
   interrupt be a problem (going into the second cascade)? But it was
   probably seldom wrong. That is, this would fail if the next
   interrupt was in the second cascade, and was wrapped. Which may
   never of happened. Also if it did happen, it would have just missed
   the interrupt.

   If an interrupt was missed, and no one was there to miss it, was it
   really missed :-)"

Chandra Seetharaman 8c78f3075d [PATCH] cpu hotplug: replace __devinit* with __cpuinit* for cpu notifications
Few of the callback functions and notifier blocks that are associated with cpu
notifications incorrectly have __devinit and __devinitdata. They should be
__cpuinit and __cpuinitdata instead.

It makes no functional difference but wastes text area when CONFIG_HOTPLUG is

Chandra Seetharaman 9c7b216d23 [PATCH] cpu hotplug: revert init patch submitted for 2.6.17
In 2.6.17, there was a problem with cpu_notifiers and XFS. I provided a

only at init time (unless CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is defined).

We deferred the real fix to 2.6.18. Here is a set of patches that fixes the

If CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is defined then cpu notifiers are available at run

Instead of incrementing xtime by tick_nsec + ntp adjustments, use the

This removes the need to keep time_phase adjustments as we just use the

Paul Mackerras bfe5d83419 [PATCH] Define __raw_get_cpu_var and use it
There are several instances of per_cpu(foo, raw_smp_processor_id()), which
is semantically equivalent to __get_cpu_var(foo) but without the warning
that smp_processor_id() can give if CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT is enabled. For
those architectures with optimized per-cpu implementations, namely ia64,
powerpc, s390, sparc64 and x86_64, per_cpu() turns into more and slower
code than __get_cpu_var(), so it would be preferable to use __get_cpu_var
on those platforms.

This defines a __raw_get_cpu_var(x) macro which turns into per_cpu(x,
raw_smp_processor_id()) on architectures that use the generic per-cpu
implementation, and turns into __get_cpu_var(x) on the architectures that
have an optimized per-cpu implementation.

Zachary Amsden 0662b71322 [PATCH] Fix a NO_IDLE_HZ timer bug
Under certain timing conditions, a race during boot occurs where timer
ticks are being processed on remote CPUs. The remote timer ticks can
increment jiffies, and if this happens during a window when a timeout is
very close to expiring but a local tick has not yet been delivered, you can
end up with

1) No softirq pending
2) A local timer wheel which is not synced to jiffies
3) No high resolution timer active
4) A local timer which is supposed to fire before the current jiffies value.

In this circumstance, the comparison in next_timer_interrupt overflows,
because the base of the comparison for high resolution timers is jiffies,
but for the softirq timer wheel, it is relative the the current base of the
wheel (jiffies_base).

Andrew Morton ba6edfcd17 [PATCH] timer initialisation fix
We need the boot CPU's tvec_bases[] entry to be initialised super-early in
boot, for early_serial_setup(). That runs within setup_arch(), before even
per-cpu areas are initialised.

The patch changes tvec_bases to use compile-time initialisation, and adds a
separate array `tvec_base_done' to keep track of which CPU has had its
tvec_bases[] entry initialised (because we can no longer use the zeroness of
that tvec_bases[] entry to determine whether it has been initialised).

Jack Steiner db1b1fefc2 [PATCH] sched: reduce overhead of calc_load
Currently, count_active_tasks() calls both nr_running() &
nr_interruptible(). Each of these functions does a "for_each_cpu" & reads
values from the runqueue of each cpu. Although this is not a lot of
instructions, each runqueue may be located on different node. Depending on
the architecture, a unique TLB entry may be required to access each
runqueue.

Since there may be more runqueues than cpu TLB entries, a scan of all
runqueues can trash the TLB. Each memory reference incurs a TLB miss &
refill.

In addition, the runqueue cacheline that contains nr_running &
nr_uninterruptible may be evicted from the cache between the two passes.
This causes unnecessary cache misses.

Combining nr_running() & nr_interruptible() into a single function
substantially reduces the TLB & cache misses on large systems. This should
have no measureable effect on smaller systems.

On a 128p IA64 system running a memory stress workload, the new function
reduced the overhead of calc_load() from 605 usec/call to 324 usec/call.

Thomas Gleixner c08b8a4910 [PATCH] sys_alarm() unsigned signed conversion fixup
alarm() calls the kernel with an unsigend int timeout in seconds. The
value is stored in the tv_sec field of a struct timeval to setup the
itimer. The tv_sec field of struct timeval is of type long, which causes
the tv_sec value to be negative on 32 bit machines if seconds > INT_MAX.

Before the hrtimer merge (pre 2.6.16) such a negative value was converted
to the maximum jiffies timeout by the timeval_to_jiffies conversion. It's
not clear whether this was intended or just happened to be done by the
timeval_to_jiffies code.

hrtimers expect a timeval in canonical form and treat a negative timeout as
already expired. This breaks the legitimate usage of alarm() with a
timeout value > INT_MAX seconds.

For 32 bit machines it is therefor necessary to limit the internal seconds
value to avoid API breakage. Instead of doing this in all implementations
of sys_alarm the duplicated sys_alarm code is moved into a common function
in itimer.c

With internal Xen-enabled kernels we see the kernel's static per-cpu data

to have data structures several kb in size allocated as per-cpu data when
the space there is rather limited.

The biggest arch-independent consumer is tvec_bases (over 4k on 32-bit

Tony Lindgren 69239749e1 [PATCH] fix next_timer_interrupt() for hrtimer
Also from Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>

Function next_timer_interrupt() got broken with a recent patch
6ba1b91213 as sys_nanosleep() was moved to
hrtimer. This broke things as next_timer_interrupt() did not check hrtimer
tree for next event.

Function next_timer_interrupt() is needed with dyntick (CONFIG_NO_IDLE_HZ,
VST) implementations, as the system can be in idle when next hrtimer event
was supposed to happen. At least ARM and S390 currently use
next_timer_interrupt().

On some platforms readq performs additional work to make sure I/O is done

Paul Mackerras 726c14bf49 [PATCH] Provide an interface for getting the current tick length
This provides an interface for arch code to find out how many
nanoseconds are going to be added on to xtime by the next call to
do_timer. The value returned is a fixed-point number in 52.12 format
in nanoseconds. The reason for this format is that it gives the
full precision that the timekeeping code is using internally.

The motivation for this is to fix a problem that has arisen on 32-bit
powerpc in that the value returned by do_gettimeofday drifts apart
from xtime if NTP is being used. PowerPC is now using a lockless
do_gettimeofday based on reading the timebase register and performing
some simple arithmetic. (This method of getting the time is also
exported to userspace via the VDSO.) However, the factor and offset
it uses were calculated based on the nominal tick length and weren't
being adjusted when NTP varied the tick length.

Note that 64-bit powerpc has had the lockless do_gettimeofday for a
long time now. It also had an extremely hairy routine that got called
from the 32-bit compat routine for adjtimex, which adjusted the
factor and offset according to what it thought the timekeeping code
was going to do. Not only was this only called if a 32-bit task did
adjtimex (i.e. not if a 64-bit task did adjtimex), it was also
duplicating computations from kernel/timer.c and it wasn't clear that
it was (still) correct.

The simple solution is to ask the timekeeping code how long the
current jiffy will be on each timer interrupt, after calling
do_timer. If this jiffy will be a different length from the last one,
we then need to compute new values for the factor and offset used in
the lockless do_gettimeofday. In this way we can keep xtime and
do_gettimeofday in sync, even when NTP is varying the tick length.

Note that when adjtimex varies the tick length, it almost always
introduces the variation from the next tick on. The only case I could
see where adjtimex would vary the length of the current tick is when
an old-style adjtime adjustment is being cancelled. (It's not clear
to me why the adjustment has to be cancelled immediately rather than
from the next tick on.) Thus I don't see any real need for a hook in
adjtimex; the rare case of an old-style adjustment being cancelled can
be fixed up at the next tick.

When using a time interpolator that is susceptible to jitter there's
potentially contention over a cmpxchg used to prevent time from going

David Meybohm 4c5640cb5f [PATCH] preempt race in getppid
With CONFIG_PREEMPT && !CONFIG_SMP, it's possible for sys_getppid to
return a bogus value if the parent's task_struct gets reallocated after
current->group_leader->real_parent is read:

        asmlinkage long sys_getppid(void)
        {
                int pid;
                struct task_struct *me = current;
                struct task_struct *parent;

                parent = me->group_leader->real_parent;
RACE HERE =>    for (;;) {
                        pid = parent->tgid;
        #ifdef CONFIG_SMP
        {
                        struct task_struct *old = parent;

                        /*
                         * Make sure we read the pid before re-reading the
                         * parent pointer:
                         */
                        smp_rmb();
                        parent = me->group_leader->real_parent;
                        if (old != parent)
                                continue;
        }
        #endif
                        break;
                }
                return pid;
        }

If the process gets preempted at the indicated point, the parent process
can go ahead and call exit() and then get wait()'d on to reap its
task_struct. When the preempted process gets resumed, it will not do any
further checks of the parent pointer on !CONFIG_SMP: it will read the
bad pid and return.

So, the same algorithm used when SMP is enabled should be used when
preempt is enabled, which will recheck ->real_parent in this case.

Jesper Juhl be5b4fbd01 [PATCH] preempt_count is int - remove cast and don't assign to unsigned type
In kernel/sched.c the return value from preempt_count() is cast to an int.
That made sense when preempt_count was defined as different types on is not
needed and should go away. The patch removes the cast.

In kernel/timer.c the return value from preempt_count() is assigned to a
variable of type u32 and then that unsigned value is later compared to
preempt_count(). Since preempt_count() returns an int, an int is what
should be used to store its return value. Storing the result in an
unsigned 32bit integer made a tiny bit of sense back when preempt_count was
different types on different archs, but no more - let's not play signed vs
unsigned comparison games when we don't have to. The patch modifies the
code to use an int to hold the value. While I was around that bit of code
I also made two changes to a nearby (related) printk() - I modified it to
specify the loglevel explicitly and also broke the line into a few pieces

Oleg Nesterov 55c888d6d0 [PATCH] timers fixes/improvements
This patch tries to solve following problems:

1. del_timer_sync() is racy. The timer can be fired again after
   del_timer_sync have checked all cpus and before it will recheck
   timer_pending().

2. It has scalability problems. All cpus are scanned to determine
   if the timer is running on that cpu.

   With this patch del_timer_sync is O(1) and no slower than plain
   del_timer(pending_timer), unless it has to actually wait for
   completion of the currently running timer.

   The only restriction is that the recurring timer should not use
   add_timer_on().

3. The timers are not serialized wrt to itself.

   If CPU_0 does mod_timer(jiffies+1) while the timer is currently
   running on CPU 1, it is quite possible that local interrupt on
   CPU_0 will start that timer before it finished on CPU_1.

4. The timers locking is suboptimal. __mod_timer() takes 3 locks
   at once and still requires wmb() in del_timer/run_timers.

   The new implementation takes 2 locks sequentially and does not
   need memory barriers.

Currently ->base != NULL means that the timer is pending. In that case
->base.lock is used to lock the timer. __mod_timer also takes timer->lock
because ->base can be == NULL.

This patch uses timer->entry.next != NULL as indication that the timer is
pending. So it does __list_del(), entry->next = NULL instead of list_del()
when the timer is deleted.

The ->base field is used for hashed locking only, it is initialized
in init_timer() which sets ->base = per_cpu(tvec_bases). When the
tvec_bases.lock is locked, it means that all timers which are tied
to this base via timer->base are locked, and the base itself is locked
too.

So __run_timers/migrate_timers can safely modify all timers which could
be found on ->tvX lists (pending timers).

When the timer's base is locked, and the timer removed from ->entry list
(which means that _run_timers/migrate_timers can't see this timer), it is
possible to set timer->base = NULL and drop the lock: the timer remains
locked.

This patch adds lock_timer_base() helper, which waits for ->base != NULL,
locks the ->base, and checks it is still the same.

__mod_timer() schedules the timer on the local CPU and changes it's base.
However, it does not lock both old and new bases at once. It locks the
timer via lock_timer_base(), deletes the timer, sets ->base = NULL, and
unlocks old base. Then __mod_timer() locks new_base, sets ->base = new_base,
and adds this timer. This simplifies the code, because AB-BA deadlock is not
possible. __mod_timer() also ensures that the timer's base is not changed
while the timer's handler is running on the old base.

__run_timers(), del_timer() do not change ->base anymore, they only clear
pending flag.

So del_timer_sync() can test timer->base->running_timer == timer to detect
whether it is running or not.

We don't need timer_list->lock anymore, this patch kills it.

We also don't need barriers. del_timer() and __run_timers() used smp_wmb()
before clearing timer's pending flag. It was needed because __mod_timer()
did not lock old_base if the timer is not pending, so __mod_timer()->list_add()
could race with del_timer()->list_del(). With this patch these functions are
serialized through base->lock.

One problem. TIMER_INITIALIZER can't use per_cpu(tvec_bases). So this patch
adds global

        struct timer_base_s {
                spinlock_t lock;
                struct timer_list *running_timer;
        } __init_timer_base;

which is used by TIMER_INITIALIZER. The corresponding fields in tvec_t_base_s
struct are replaced by struct timer_base_s t_base.

It is indeed ugly. But this can't have scalability problems. The global
__init_timer_base.lock is used only when __mod_timer() is called for the first
time AND the timer was compile time initialized. After that the timer migrates
to the local CPU.
