On VIVT ARM, when we have multiple shared mappings of the same file
in the same MM, we need to ensure that we have coherency across all
copies. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages
uncacheable.
This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we
now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available
for modification via update_mmu_cache().
Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to
update_mmu_cache():
On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables
to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much
more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the
pte_t?
Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC:
Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that
-instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases,
for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the
_PAGE_EXEC.
So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and
remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to
suit.

Some glibc versions intentionally create lots of alignment faults in
their gconv code, which if not fixed up, results in segfaults during
boot. This can prevent systems booting properly.
There is no clear hard-configurable default for this; the desired
default depends on the nature of the userspace which is going to be
booted.
So, provide a way for the alignment fault handler to be configured via
the kernel command line.

This patch enables fast retransmissions after one dupACK for
TCP if the stream is identified as thin. This will reduce
latencies for thin streams that are not able to trigger fast
retransmissions due to high packet interarrival time. This
mechanism is only active if enabled by iocontrol or syscontrol
and the stream is identified as thin.

This patch will make TCP use only linear timeouts if the
stream is thin. This will help to avoid the very high latencies
that thin stream suffer because of exponential backoff. This
mechanism is only active if enabled by iocontrol or syscontrol
and the stream is identified as thin. A maximum of 6 linear
timeouts is tried before exponential backoff is resumed.

On x86, before prefill_possible_map(), nr_cpu_ids will be NR_CPUS aka
CONFIG_NR_CPUS.
Add nr_cpus= to set nr_cpu_ids. so we can simulate cpus <=8 are installed on
normal config.

Most implementations of arch_syscall_addr() are the same, so create a
default version in common code and move the one piece that differs (the
syscall table) to asm/syscall.h. New arch ports don't have to waste
time copying & pasting this simple function.
The s390/sparc versions need to be different, so document why.

With dynamic TTY nodes and the help of udev, we no longer need this
special filesystem. Schedule it for removal in one year from now.

Now that numa=fake=<size>[MG] is implemented, it is possible to remove
configurable node size support. The command-line parsing was already
broken (numa=fake=*128, for example, would not work) and since fake nodes
are now interleaved over physical nodes, this support is no longer
required.

numa=fake=N specifies the number of fake nodes, N, to partition the
system into and then allocates them by interleaving over physical nodes.
This requires knowledge of the system capacity when attempting to
allocate nodes of a certain size: either very large nodes to benchmark
scalability of code that operates on individual nodes, or very small
nodes to find bugs in the VM.
This patch introduces numa=fake=<size>[MG] so it is possible to specify
the size of each node to allocate. When used, nodes of the size
specified will be allocated and interleaved over the set of physical
nodes.
FAKE_NODE_MIN_SIZE was also moved to the more-appropriate
include/asm/numa_64.h.

This fixes a problem in the DCCP getsockopt() API: currently there is no way
for a user to a priori know the number of built-in CCIDs, other than trying
DCCP_SOCKOPT_AVAILABLE_CCIDS in a loop, incrementing the option length until
EINVAL is no longer returned.
This patch truncates the array to the user-provided length. No copy is made
when the length is <= 0.
Due to the length restriction in do_dccp_getsockopt() to sizeof(int), the
minimum array length remains 4, which is a reasonable default (only 3
CCIDs, CCID-2..4, are currently defined).

Early on this was an experimental facility that few
people other than Alexey Kuznetsov played with.
Now it's a pretty fundamental thing and as people add
more features to AF_PACKET sockets this config options
creates ifdef spaghetti.

The IRQ probing is needlessly complex. All off the 83xx device trees in
arch/powerpc/boot/dts/ specify 5 interrupts per DMA controller: one for the
controller, and one for each channel. These interrupts are all attached to
the same IRQ line.
This causes an interesting situation if two channels interrupt at the same
time. The per-controller handler will handle the first channel, and the
per-channel handler will handle the remaining channels.
Instead of this mess, we fix the bug in the per-controller handler, and
make it handle all channels that generated an interrupt. When a
per-controller handler is specified in the device tree, we prefer to use
the shared handler instead of the per-channel handler.
The 85xx/86xx controllers do not have a per-controller interrupt, and
instead use a per-channel interrupt. This behavior has not been changed.

On Virtually Indexed architectures (which don't do automatic alias
resolution in their caches), we have to flush via the correct
virtual address to prepare pages for DMA. On some architectures
(like arm) we cannot prevent the CPU from doing data movein along
the alias (and thus giving stale read data), so we not only have to
introduce a flush API to push dirty cache lines out, but also an invalidate
API to kill inconsistent cache lines that may have moved in before
DMA changed the data

If the per device ARP_ACCEPT option is enable, currently we only allow
creating new ARP cache entries for response type gratuitous ARP.
Allowing gratuitous ARP to create new ARP entries (not only to update
existing ones) is useful when we want to avoid unnecessary delays for
the first packet of a stream.
This patch allows request type gratuitous ARP to create new ARP cache
entries as well. This is useful when we want to populate the ARP cache
entries for a large number of hosts on the same LAN.

This patch adds the ov511, quickcam_messenger, w9968cf, stv680 and ovcamchip
v4l1 drivers to the feature removal schedule as the devices they support
are now all also supported by v4l2 gspca sub drivers.
This patch also adds the v4l2 vc0301 driver for removal as it duplicates
functionality of the gspca_zc3xx driver, zc0301 only supports 2 USB-ID's
(because it only supports a limited set of sensors) wich are also
supported
by the gspca_zc3xx driver (which supports 53 USB-ID's in total).

Processor Clocking Control (PCC) is an interface between the BIOS and OSPM.
Based on the server workload, OSPM can request what frequency it expects
from a logical CPU, and the BIOS will achieve that frequency transparently.
This patch introduces driver support for PCC. OSPM uses the PCC driver to
communicate with the BIOS via the PCC interface.
There is a Documentation file that provides a link to the PCC
Specification, and also provides a summary of the PCC interface.
Currently, certain HP ProLiant platforms implement the PCC interface. However,
any platform whose BIOS implements the PCC Specification, can utilize this
driver.
V2 --> V1 changes (based on Dominik's suggestions):
- Removed the dependency on CPU_FREQ_TABLE
- "cpufreq_stats" will no longer PANIC. Actually, it will not load anymore
because it is not applicable.
- Removed the sanity check for target frequency in the ->target routine.
NOTE: A patch to sanitize the target frequency requested by "ondemand" is
needed to ensure that the target freq < policy->min.

Fix trivial conflict in drivers/scsi/cxgb3i/cxgb3i_offload.c
3c509 was changed to support ethtool in 2002, making the 'xcvr' module
parameter obsolete in most cases. More recently 3c509 was converted
to the modern driver model and this parameter was removed. Fix the
documentation to refer to ethtool rather than the module parameter.

Commit d899bf7b (procfs: provide stack information for threads) introduced
to show stack information in /proc/{pid}/status. But it cause large
performance regression. Unfortunately /proc/{pid}/status is used ps
command too and ps is one of most important component. Because both to
take mmap_sem and page table walk are heavily operation.
If many process run, the ps performance is,

Thus, this patch revert it. Fortunately /proc/{pid}/task/{tid}/smaps
provide almost same information. we can use it.
Commit d899bf7b introduced two features:
1) Add the annotattion of [thread stack: xxxx] mark to
/proc/{pid}/task/{tid}/maps.
2) Add StackUsage field to /proc/{pid}/status.
I only revert (2), because I haven't seen (1) cause regression.

The latest version of the Revision Guide for AMD Family 10h Processors
lists two more processor revisions which may be affected by erratum 319.
Change the blacklisting code to correctly detect those processors, by
implementing AMD's recommended algorithm.

This is to be used together with switch technologies, like RFC3069,
that where the individual ports are not allowed to communicate with
each other, but they are allowed to talk to the upstream router. As
described in RFC 3069, it is possible to allow these hosts to
communicate through the upstream router by proxy_arp'ing.
This patch basically allow proxy arp replies back to the same
interface (from which the ARP request/solicitation was received).
Tunable per device via proc "proxy_arp_pvlan":
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/*/proxy_arp_pvlan
This switch technology is known by different vendor names:
- In RFC 3069 it is called VLAN Aggregation.
- Cisco and Allied Telesyn call it Private VLAN.
- Hewlett-Packard call it Source-Port filtering or port-isolation.
- Ericsson call it MAC-Forced Forwarding (RFC Draft).

Introduce kernel parameter acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable
some laptop requires SCI_EN being set directly on resume,
or else they hung somewhere in the resume code path.
We already have a blacklist for these laptops but we still need
this option, especially when debugging some suspend/resume problems,
in case there are systems that need this workaround and are not yet
in the blacklist.

Many struct driver_attribute descriptors are purely read-only
structures, and there's no need to change them. Therefore make
the promise not to, which will let those descriptors be put in

Most device_attributes are const, and are begging to be
put in a ro section. However, the create and remove
file interfaces were failing to propagate the const promise

- it is possible to submit patches for the stable queue without sending
them directly stable@kernel.org. If the tag (Cc: stable@kernel.org) is
available in the sign-off area than hpa's script will filter them into
the stable mailbox once it hits Linus' tree.
- Patches which require others to be applied first can be also specified.

The power management of some devices is handled through device types
and device classes rather than through bus types. Since these
devices may also benefit from using the run-time power management
core, extend it so that the device type and device class run-time PM
callbacks can be taken into consideration by it if the bus type
callback is not defined.
Update the run-time PM core documentation to reflect this change.

This patch provides infrastructure for machine translation of the
regulatory rules database used by CRDA into a C data structure.
It includes code for searching that database as an alternative
to dynamic regulatory rules updates via CRDA. Most people should
use CRDA instead of this infrastructure, but it provides a better
alternative than the WIRELESS_OLD_REGULATORY infrastructure (which
can now be removed).

Example is outdated, it still uses old ->read_proc interfaces and "fb"
example is plain racy. There are better examples all over the tree.
Docbook itself says almost nothing about /proc and contain quite a number
of simply wrong facts, e.g. device nodes support. What it does is
describing at great length interface which are going to be removed.
There are Documentation/filesystems/seq_file.txt in exchange.

Drivers may use gpiolib sysfs as part of their public user space
interface. The GPIO number and polarity might change from board to
board. The gpio_export_link() call can be used to hide the GPIO number
from user space. Add support for also hiding the GPIO line polarity
changes from user space.

If docs are being built in a separate directory, xmlto and xsltproc
can't find included sources. Make links back to the source directory.
I would much prefer to have xmlto and xsltproc look in the source
directory for included entities but couldn't see how to do that. This
needs to be solved in some way for 2.6.32, even if this patch isn't the
right way to do it.

scaling and cropping on the client and on the host. Due to its complexity the
algorithm deserves separate documentation.

This is a simpler, gentler variant of memory_failure() for soft page
offlining controlled from user space. It doesn't kill anything, just
tries to invalidate and if that doesn't work migrate the
page away.
This is useful for predictive failure analysis, where a page has
a high rate of corrected errors, but hasn't gone bad yet. Instead
it can be offlined early and avoided.
The offlining is controlled from sysfs, including a new generic
entry point for hard page offlining for symmetry too.
We use the page isolate facility to prevent re-allocation
race. Normally this is only used by memory hotplug. To avoid
races with memory allocation I am using lock_system_sleep().
This avoids the situation where memory hotplug is about
to isolate a page range and then hwpoison undoes that work.
This is a big hammer currently, but the simplest solution
currently.
When the page is not free or LRU we try to free pages
from slab and other caches. The slab freeing is currently
quite dumb and does not try to focus on the specific slab
cache which might own the page. This could be potentially
improved later.

The hwpoison test suite need to inject hwpoison to a collection of
selected task pages, and must not touch pages not owned by them and
thus kill important system processes such as init. (But it's OK to
mis-hwpoison free/unowned pages as well as shared clean pages.
Mis-hwpoison of shared dirty pages will kill all tasks, so the test
suite will target all or non of such tasks in the first place.)
The memory cgroup serves this purpose well. We can put the target
processes under the control of a memory cgroup, and tell the hwpoison
injection code to only kill pages associated with some active memory
cgroup.
The prerequisite for doing hwpoison stress tests with mem_cgroup is,
the mem_cgroup code tracks task pages _accurately_ (unless page is
locked). Which we believe is/should be true.
The benefits are simplification of hwpoison injector code. Also the
mem_cgroup code will automatically be tested by hwpoison test cases.
The alternative interfaces pin-pfn/unpin-pfn can also delegate the
(process and page flags) filtering functions reliably to user space.
However prototype implementation shows that this scheme adds more
complexity than we wanted.

When specified, only poison pages if ((page_flags & mask) == value).

This allows stress testing of many kinds of pages.
Strictly speaking, the buddy pages requires taking zone lock, to avoid
setting PG_hwpoison on a "was buddy but now allocated to someone" page.
However we can just do nothing because we set PG_locked in the beginning,
this prevents the page allocator from allocating it to someone. (It will
BUG() on the unexpected PG_locked, which is fine for hwpoison testing.)

__memory_failure()'s workflow is
set PG_hwpoison
//...
unset PG_hwpoison if didn't pass hwpoison filter
That could kill unrelated process if it happens to page fault on the
page with the (temporary) PG_hwpoison. The race should be big enough to
appear in stress tests.
Fix it by grabbing the page and checking filter at inject time. This
also avoids the very noisy "Injecting memory failure..." messages.
- we don't touch madvise() based injection, because the filters are
generally not necessary for it.
- if we want to apply the filters to h/w aided injection, we'd better to
rearrange the logic in __memory_failure() instead of this patch.

Filesystem data/metadata present the most tricky-to-isolate pages.
It requires careful code review and stress testing to get them right.
The fs/device filter helps to target the stress tests to some specific
filesystem pages. The filter condition is block device's major/minor
numbers:
- corrupt-filter-dev-major
- corrupt-filter-dev-minor
When specified (non -1), only page cache pages that belong to that
device will be poisoned.
The filters are checked reliably on the locked and refcounted page.

The unpoisoning interface is useful for stress testing tools to
reclaim poisoned pages (to prevent OOM)
There is no hardware level unpoisioning, so this
cannot be used for real memory errors, only for software injected errors.
Note that it may leak pages silently - those who have been removed from
LRU cache, but not isolated from page cache/swap cache at hwpoison time.
Especially the stress test of dirty swap cache pages shall reboot system
before exhausting memory.

Disable volume control by default. It can be enabled at module load
time by a module parameter (volume_control=1).
The audio control mixer that thinkpad-acpi interacts with is fully
functional without any drivers, and operated by hotkeys.
The idea behind the console audio control is that the human operator
is the only one that can interact with it. The ThinkVantage suite in
Windows does not allow any software-based overrides, and only does OSD
(on-screen-display) functions.
The Linux driver will, with the addition of the ALSA interface, try to
follow and enforce the ThinkVantage UI design:
The user is supposed to use the keyboard hotkeys to interact with the
console audio control. The kernel and the desktop environment is
supposed to cooperate to provide proper user feedback through
on-screen-display functions.
Distros are urged to not to enable volume control by default.
Enabling this must be a local admin's decision. This is the reason
why there is no Kconfig option.
Keep in mind that all ThinkPads have a normal, main mixer (AC97 or
HDA) for regular software-based audio control. We are not talking
about that mixer here.
Advanced users are, of course, free to enable volume control and do as
they please.

Lenovo removed the extra mixer since the T61 and thereabouts.
Newer Lenovo models only have the mute gate function, and leave
the volume control to the HDA mixer.
Until a way to automatically query the firmware about its audio
control capabilities is discovered (there might not be any), use a
white/black list.
We will likely need to ask T60 (old and new model) and Z60/Z61 users
whether they have volume control to populate the black/white list.
Meanwhile, provide a volume_capabilities parameter that can be used to
override the defaults.

I don't trust the coupled EC writes and SMI calls the current volume
control code does very much, although it is exactly what the IBM DSDTs
seem to do (they never do more than a single step though).
Change the driver to stop issuing SMIs, and just drive the EC directly
to the desired level (DSDTs seem to confirm this will work even on
very old models like the 570 and 600e/x).
We checkpoint directly to NVRAM (this can be turned off) at
suspend/shutdown/driver unload, which from what I can see in tbp,
should also work on every ThinkPad.

Add control of fan minimum turn-on output levels, decoupling it from the
fan turn-off output level. Add control of rate of change of fan output
level. These in turn allow lower turn-off rotor speed and smoother
transitions for better thermal and acoustic control authority. Add
support for constant fan speed and proportional-response operations modes.

Setting a thread's comm to be something unique is a very useful ability
and is helpful for debugging complicated threaded applications. However
currently the only way to set a thread name is for the thread to name
itself via the PR_SET_NAME prctl.
However, there may be situations where it would be advantageous for a
thread dispatcher to be naming the threads its managing, rather then
having the threads self-describe themselves. This sort of behavior is
available on other systems via the pthread_setname_np() interface.
This patch exports a task's comm via proc/pid/comm and
proc/pid/task/tid/comm interfaces, and allows thread siblings to write to
these values.

The NOMMU code currently clears all anonymous mmapped memory. While this
is what we want in the default case, all memory allocation from userspace
under NOMMU has to go through this interface, including malloc() which is
allowed to return uninitialized memory. This can easily be a significant
performance penalty. So for constrained embedded systems were security is
irrelevant, allow people to avoid clearing memory unnecessarily.
This also alters the ELF-FDPIC binfmt such that it obtains uninitialised
memory for the brk and stack region.

Now that ksm pages are swappable, and the known holes plugged, remove
mention of unswappable kernel pages from KSM documentation and comments.
Remove the totalram_pages/4 initialization of max_kernel_pages. In fact,
remove max_kernel_pages altogether - we can reinstate it if removal turns
out to break someone's script; but if we later want to limit KSM's memory
usage, limiting the stable nodes would not be an effective approach.

Commit c04fc586c (mm: show node to memory section relationship with
symlinks in sysfs) created symlinks from nodes to memory sections, e.g.
/sys/devices/system/node/node1/memory135 -> ../../memory/memory135
If you're examining the memory section though and are wondering what node
it might belong to, you can find it by grovelling around in sysfs, but
it's a little cumbersome.
Add a reverse symlink for each memory section that points back to the
node to which it belongs.

Register per node hstate attributes only for nodes with memory. As
suggested by David Rientjes.
With Memory Hotplug, memory can be added to a memoryless node and a node
with memory can become memoryless. Therefore, add a memory on/off-line
notifier callback to [un]register a node's attributes on transition
to/from memoryless state.
N.B., Only tested build, boot, libhugetlbfs regression.
i.e., no memory hotplug testing.

Register per node hstate sysfs attributes only for nodes with memory.
Global replacement of 'all online nodes" with "all nodes with memory" in
mm/hugetlb.c. Suggested by David Rientjes.
A subsequent patch will handle adding/removing of per node hstate sysfs
attributes when nodes transition to/from memoryless state via memory
hotplug.
NOTE: this patch has not been tested with memoryless nodes.

On a system with large amount of memory (256GB), invoking page-types can
take quite a long time, which is unreasonable considering the user only
wants a description of the flags:

Teach page-types to describe page flags directly from the command line.
Why is this useful? For instance, if you're using memory hotplug and see
this in /var/log/messages:

It would be nice to decode those page flags without staring at the source.

The reason of removal, "replaced by allowdac and no dac
combination" is incorrect. There is no way to do the same thing
with "allowdac" and "nodac" combination.
The usedac option enables us to stop via_no_dac() setting
forbid_dac to 1. That is, someone who uses VIA bridges can use
DAC with this option even if some of VIA bridges seem to be
broken about DAC.

This section pointed out to compilation options which no longer exist.
VERBOSE_IDE_CD_ERRORS has been replace by config option
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD_VERBOSE_ERRORS.
STANDARD_ATAPI is no longer needed, since the non-standard drivers, which
required bcd2bin are now detected, and there's a flag for them.
NO_DOOR_LOCKING is now a sysctl parameter for cdrom drivers.
CDROM_NBLOCKS_BUFFER is not used anymore. The READAUDIO is now in cdrom.c and it
allocates as much as user space has requested to read, backing off if it fails.
TEST is not there anymore or in cdrom either. ide allows to send ATA commands
through ioctl, although it may be helpful to send MMC packets through the cdrom
layer directly.

In this case, the metadata needs to not be in the same
sector as the bitmap.
md will not read/write any bitmap metadata. Config must be
done via sysfs and when a recovery makes the array non-degraded
again, writing 'true' to 'bitmap/can_clear' will allow bits in
the bitmap to be cleared again.

A new attribute directory 'bitmap' in 'md' is created which
contains files for configuring the bitmap.
'location' identifies where the bitmap is, either 'none',
or 'file' or 'sector offset from metadata'.
Writing 'location' can create or remove a bitmap.
Adding a 'file' bitmap this way is not yet supported.
'chunksize' and 'time_base' must be set before 'location'
can be set.
'chunksize' can be set before creating a bitmap, but is
currently always over-ridden by the bitmap superblock.
'time_base' and 'backlog' can be updated at any time.

To make it easier for module-init-tools and scripts like mkinitrd to
distinguish builtin and missing modules, install a modules.builtin file
listing all builtin modules. This is done by generating an additional
config file (tristate.conf) with tristate options set to uppercase 'Y'
or 'M'. If we source that config file, the builtin modules appear in
obj-Y.

Initially only for 34xx. This code allows us to:
- Make the code more generic as the omap internal signal
names can stay the same across omap generations for some
devices
- Map mux registers to GPIO registers that is needed for
dynamic muxing of pins during off-idle
- Override bootloader mux values via kernel cmdline using
omap_mux=some.signa1=0x1234,some.signal2=0x1234
- View and set the mux registers via debugfs if
CONFIG_DEBUG_FS is enabled

Accroding commit 0994375e, which is adding remove_id sysfs attr
for pci drivers, for management tools dynamically bind/unbind
a pci/usb devices to a specified drivers; with this patch,
the management tools can be simplied.
And the original code didn't handle the failure of
usb_create_newid_file, fixed in this patch.

This patch (as1311) fixes a problem in usb-storage: Some devices are
pretty broken when it comes to reporting sense data. The information
they send back indicates that they have more than 18 bytes of sense
data available, but when the system asks for more than 18 they fail or
hang. The symptom is that probing fails with multiple resets.
The patch adds a new BAD_SENSE flag to indicate that usb-storage
should never ask for more than 18 bytes of sense data. The flag can
be set in an unusual_devs entry or via the "quirks=" module parameter,
and it is set automatically whenever a REQUEST SENSE command for more
than 18 bytes fails or times out.
An unusual_devs entry is added for the Agfa photo frame, which uses a
Prolific chip having this bug.

This patch (as1303) revises the USB Power Management infrastructure to
make it compatible with the new driver-model Runtime PM framework:
Drivers are no longer allowed to access intf->pm_usage_cnt
directly; the PM framework manages its own usage counters.
usb_autopm_set_interface() is eliminated, because it directly
sets intf->pm_usage_cnt.
usb_autopm_enable() and usb_autopm_disable() are eliminated,
because they call usb_autopm_set_interface().
usb_autopm_get_interface_no_resume() and
usb_autopm_put_interface_no_suspend() are added. They
correspond to pm_runtime_get_noresume() and
pm_runtime_put_noidle() in the PM framework.
The power/level attribute no longer accepts "suspend", only
"on" and "auto". The PM framework doesn't allow devices to be
forced into a suspended mode.
The hub driver contains the only code that violates the new
guidelines. It is updated to use the new interface routines instead.

This patch (as1302) removes the auto_pm flag from struct usb_device.
The flag's only purpose was to distinguish between autosuspends and
external suspends, but that information is now available in the
pm_message_t argument passed to suspend methods.

Add bus glue driver for Xilinx USB host controller. The controller can be
configured as HS only or HS/FS hybrid. The driver uses the device tree file
to configure the driver according to the setting in the hardware system.
This driver has been tested with usbtest using the NET2280 PCI card.

Introduce a new debugfs I/F (/sys/kernel/debug/acpi/custom_method) for ACPI,
which can be used to customize the ACPI control methods at runtime.
We can use this to debug the AML code level bugs instead of overriding the
whole DSDT table, without rebuilding/rebooting kernel any more.
Detailed description about how to use this debugfs I/F is stated in
Documentation/acpi/method-customizing.txt

The snapshot-merge target allows a snapshot to be merged back into the
snapshot's origin device.
One anticipated use of snapshot merging is the rollback of filesystems
to back out problematic system upgrades.
This patch adds snapshot-merge target management to both
dm_snapshot_init() and dm_snapshot_exit(). As an initial place-holder,
snapshot-merge is identical to the snapshot target. Documentation is
provided.
