Andi Kleen ac71d12c99 [PATCH] x86_64: Avoid EBDA area in early boot allocator
Based on analysis&patch from Robert Hentosch

Observed on a Dell PE6850 with 16GB

The problem occurs very early on, when the kernel allocates space for the
temporary memory map called bootmap. The bootmap overlaps the EBDA region.
EBDA region is not historically reserved in the e820 mapping. When the
bootmap is freed it marks the EBDA region as usable.

If you notice in setup.c there is already code to work around the EBDA
in reserve_ebda_region(), this check however occurs after the bootmap
is allocated and doesn't prevent the bootmap from using this range.

AK: I redid the original patch. Thanks also to Jan Beulich for
spotting some mistakes.

Arjan van de Ven 952223683e [PATCH] x86_64: Introduce e820_all_mapped
Introduce a e820_all_mapped() function which checks if the entire range
<start,end> is mapped with type.

This is done by moving the local start variable to the end of each
known-good region; if at the end of the function the start address is
still before end, there must be a part that's not of the correct type;
otherwise it's a good region.

Arjan van de Ven eee5a9fa63 [PATCH] x86_64: Rename e820_mapped to e820_any_mapped
Rename e820_mapped to e820_any_mapped since it tests if any part of the
range is mapped according to the type.

Later steps will introduce e820_all_mapped which will check if the
entire range is mapped with the type. Both have their merit.

akpm@osdl.org 69cda7b1f0 [PATCH] kdump: x86_64: add memmmap command line option
)

From: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@in.ibm.com>

- This patch introduces the memmap option for x86_64 similar to i386.

- memmap=exactmap enables setting of an exact E820 memory map, as specified
  by the user.

Changes in this version:

- Used e820_end_of_ram() to find the max_pfn as suggested by Andi kleen.

- removed PFN_UP & PFN_DOWN macros

- Printing the user defined map also.

Andi Kleen 485761bd6a [PATCH] x86_64: Tell VM about holes in nodes
Some nodes can have large holes on x86-64.

This fixes problems with the VM allowing too many dirty pages because it
overestimates the number of available RAM in a node. In extreme cases you
can end up with all RAM filled with dirty pages which can lead to deadlocks
and other nasty behaviour.

This patch just tells the VM about the known holes from e820. Reserved
(like the kernel text or mem_map) is still not taken into account, but that
should be only a few percent error now.

Small detail is that the flat setup uses the NUMA free_area_init_node() now
too because it offers more flexibility.

(akpm: lotsa thanks to Martin for working this problem out)

Venkatesh Pallipadi f9ba70535d [PATCH] Increase number of e820 entries hard limit from 32 to 128
The specifications that talk about E820 map doesn't have an upper limit on
the number of e820 entries. But, today's kernel has a hard limit of 32.
With increase in memory size, we are seeing the number of E820 entries
reaching close to 32. Patch below bumps the number upto 128.

The patch changes the location of EDDBUF in zero-page (as it comes after E820).
As, EDDBUF is not used by boot loaders, this patch should not have any effect
on bootloader-setup code interface.

Patch covers both i386 and x86-64.

Tested on:
* grub booting bzImage
* lilo booting bzImage with EDID info enabled
* pxeboot of bzImage

Side-effect:
bss increases by ~ 2K and init.data increases by ~7.5K
on all systems, due to increase in size of static arrays.

Andi Kleen a1e9778203 [PATCH] x86_64: Port over e820 gap detection from i386
Look for gaps in the e820 memory map to put PCI resources in.

This hopefully fixes problems with the PCI code assigning 32bit BARs MMIO
resources which are >32bit.

Linus Torvalds 1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
