Linus Torvalds fc76a258d4 Driver core patches for 3.11-rc1
Here's the big driver core merge for 3.11-rc1

Lots of little things, and larger firmware subsystem updates, all
described in the shortlog. Nice thing here is that we finally get rid
of CONFIG_HOTPLUG, after 10+ years, thanks to Stephen Rohtwell (it had

Ming Lei bb2b0051d7 sysfs: check if one entry has been removed before freeing
It might be a kernel disaster if one sysfs entry is freed but
still referenced by sysfs tree.

Recently Dave and Sasha reported one use-after-free problem on
sysfs entry, and the problem has been troubleshooted with help
of debug message added in this patch.

Given sysfs_get_dirent/sysfs_put are exported APIs, even inside
sysfs they are called in many contexts(kobject/attribe add/delete,
inode init/drop, dentry lookup/release, readdir, ...), it is healthful
to check the removed flag before freeing one entry and dump message
if it is freeing without being removed first.

Eric W. Biederman 87a8ebd637 userns: Restrict when proc and sysfs can be mounted
Only allow unprivileged mounts of proc and sysfs if they are already
mounted when the user namespace is created.

proc and sysfs are interesting because they have content that is
per namespace, and so fresh mounts are needed when new namespaces
are created while at the same time proc and sysfs have content that
is shared between every instance.

Respect the policy of who may see the shared content of proc and sysfs
by only allowing new mounts if there was an existing mount at the time
the user namespace was created.

In practice there are only two interesting cases: proc and sysfs are
mounted at their usual places, proc and sysfs are not mounted at all
(some form of mount namespace jail).

Ming Lei e5110f411d sysfs: handle failure path correctly for readdir()
In case of 'if (filp->f_pos ==  0 or 1)' of sysfs_readdir(),
the failure from filldir() isn't handled, and the reference counter
of the sysfs_dirent object pointed by filp->private_data will be
released without clearing filp->private_data, so use after free
bug will be triggered later.

This patch returns immeadiately under the situation for fixing the bug,

While readdir() is running, lseek() may set filp->f_pos as zero,
then may leave filp->private_data pointing to one sysfs_dirent

Sasha Levin b67bfe0d42 hlist: drop the node parameter from iterators
I'm not sure why, but the hlist for each entry iterators were conceived

        list_for_each_entry(pos, head, member)

The hlist ones were greedy and wanted an extra parameter:

        hlist_for_each_entry(tpos, pos, head, member)

Why did they need an extra pos parameter? I'm not quite sure. Not only
they don't really need it, it also prevents the iterator from looking
exactly like the list iterator, which is unfortunate.

Besides the semantic patch, there was some manual work required:

 - Fix up the actual hlist iterators in linux/list.h
 - Fix up the declaration of other iterators based on the hlist ones.
 - A very small amount of places were using the 'node' parameter, this
was modified to use 'obj->member' instead.
 - Coccinelle didn't handle the hlist_for_each_entry_safe iterator
properly, so those had to be fixed up manually.

The semantic patch which is mostly the work of Peter Senna Tschudin is here:

Rafael J. Wysocki 0bb8f3d6ae sysfs: Functions for adding/removing symlinks to/from attribute groups
The most convenient way to expose ACPI power resources lists of a
device is to put symbolic links to sysfs directories representing
those resources into special attribute groups in the device's sysfs
directory. For this purpose, it is necessary to be able to add
symbolic links to attribute groups.

For this reason, add sysfs helper functions for adding/removing
symbolic links to/from attribute groups, sysfs_add_link_to_group()
and sysfs_remove_link_from_group(), respectively.

This change set includes a build fix from David Rientjes.

Linus Torvalds 6a2b60b17b Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
"While small this set of changes is very significant with respect to
containers in general and user namespaces in particular. The user
  space interface is now complete.

This set of changes adds support for unprivileged users to create user
namespaces and as a user namespace root to create other namespaces.
The tyranny of supporting suid root preventing unprivileged users from
using cool new kernel features is broken.

This set of changes completes the work on setns, adding support for
  the pid, user, mount namespaces.

This set of changes includes a bunch of basic pid namespace
cleanups/simplifications. Of particular significance is the rework of
the pid namespace cleanup so it no longer requires sending out
tendrils into all kinds of unexpected cleanup paths for operation. At
least one case of broken error handling is fixed by this cleanup.

The files under /proc/<pid>/ns/ have been converted from regular files
to magic symlinks which prevents incorrect caching by the VFS,
ensuring the files always refer to the namespace the process is
currently using and ensuring that the ptrace_mayaccess permission
  checks are always applied.

The files under /proc/<pid>/ns/ have been given stable inode numbers
so it is now possible to see if different processes share the same
  namespaces.

Through the David Miller's net tree are changes to relax many of the
permission checks in the networking stack to allowing the user
namespace root to usefully use the networking stack. Similar changes
for the mount namespace and the pid namespace are coming through my
  tree.

Two small changes to add user namespace support were commited here adn
in David Miller's -net tree so that I could complete the work on the
  /proc/<pid>/ns/ files in this tree.

Work remains to make it safe to build user namespaces and 9p, afs,
ceph, cifs, coda, gfs2, ncpfs, nfs, nfsd, ocfs2, and xfs so the
Kconfig guard remains in place preventing that user namespaces from
being built when any of those filesystems are enabled.

Future design work remains to allow root users outside of the initial
user namespace to mount more than just /proc and /sys."

The warning check for duplicate sysfs entries can cause a buffer overflow
when printing the warning, as strcat() doesn't check buffer sizes.
Use strlcat() instead.

Since strlcat() doesn't return a pointer to the passed buffer, unlike
strcat(), I had to convert the nested concatenation in sysfs_add_one() to
an admittedly more obscure comma operator construct, to avoid emitting code
for the concatenation if CONFIG_BUG is disabled.

Glauber Costa e5bcac6147 sysfs: fail dentry revalidation after namespace change
When we change the namespace tag of a sysfs entry, the associated dentry
is still kept around. readdir() will work correctly and not display the
old entries, but open() will still succeed, so will reads and writes.

This will no longer happen if sysfs is remounted, hinting that this is a
cache-related problem.

I am using the following sequence to demonstrate that:

shell1:
ip link add type veth
unshare -nm

shell2:
ip link set veth1 <pid_of_shell_1>
cat /sys/devices/virtual/net/veth1/ifindex

Before that patch, this will succeed (fail to fail). After it, it will
correctly return an error. Differently from a normal rename, which we
handle fine, changing the object namespace will keep it's path intact.
So this check seems necessary as well.

Linus Torvalds 644473e9c6 Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull user namespace enhancements from Eric Biederman:
"This is a course correction for the user namespace, so that we can
reach an inexpensive, maintainable, and reasonably complete
  implementation.

  Highlights:
   - Config guards make it impossible to enable the user namespace and
code that has not been converted to be user namespace safe.

   - Use of the new kuid_t type ensures the if you somehow get past the
config guards the kernel will encounter type errors if you enable
user namespaces and attempt to compile in code whose permission
checks have not been updated to be user namespace safe.

   - All uids from child user namespaces are mapped into the initial
user namespace before they are processed. Removing the need to add
an additional check to see if the user namespace of the compared
     uids remains the same.

   - With the user namespaces compiled out the performance is as good or
     better than it is today.

   - For most operations absolutely nothing changes performance or
operationally with the user namespace enabled.

   - The worst case performance I could come up with was timing 1
billion cache cold stat operations with the user namespace code
enabled. This went from 156s to 164s on my laptop (or 156ns to
     164ns per stat operation).

   - (uid_t)-1 and (gid_t)-1 are reserved as an internal error value.
Most uid/gid setting system calls treat these value specially
anyway so attempting to use -1 as a uid would likely cause
     entertaining failures in userspace.

   - If setuid is called with a uid that can not be mapped setuid fails.
I have looked at sendmail, login, ssh and every other program I
could think of that would call setuid and they all check for and
handle the case where setuid fails.

   - If stat or a similar system call is called from a context in which
we can not map a uid we lie and return overflowuid. The LFS
experience suggests not lying and returning an error code might be
better, but the historical precedent with uids is different and I
can not think of anything that would break by lying about a uid we
     can't map.

   - Capabilities are localized to the current user namespace making it
safe to give the initial user in a user namespace all capabilities.

My git tree covers all of the modifications needed to convert the core
kernel and enough changes to make a system bootable to runlevel 1."

Alan Stern 356c05d58a sysfs: get rid of some lockdep false positives
This patch (as1554) fixes a lockdep false-positive report. The
problem arises because lockdep is unable to deal with the
tree-structured locks created by the device core and sysfs.

This particular problem involves a sysfs attribute method that
unregisters itself, not from the device it was called for, but from a
descendant device. Lockdep doesn't understand the distinction and
reports a possible deadlock, even though the operation is safe.

This is the sort of thing that would normally be handled by using a
nested lock annotation; unfortunately it's not feasible to do that
here. There's no sensible way to tell sysfs when attribute removal
occurs in the context of a parent attribute method.

As a workaround, the patch adds a new flag to struct attribute
telling sysfs not to inform lockdep when it acquires a readlock on a
sysfs_dirent instance for the attribute. The readlock is still
acquired, but lockdep doesn't know about it and hence does not
complain about impossible deadlock scenarios.

Also added are macros for static initialization of attribute
structures with the ignore_lockdep flag set. The three offending
attributes in the USB subsystem are converted to use the new macros.

Dan Williams 3a198886ab sysfs: handle 'parent deleted before child added'
In scsi at least two cases of the parent device being deleted before the
child is added have been observed.

1/ scsi is performing async scans and the device is removed prior to the
async can thread running (can happen with an in-opportune / unlikely
   unplug during initial scan).

2/ libsas discovery event running after the parent port has been torn
down (this is a bug in libsas).

Result in crash signatures like:

In this scenario the parent is still valid (because we have a
reference), but it has been device_del()'d which means its kobj->sd
pointer is NULL'd via:

 device_del()->kobject_del()->sysfs_remove_dir()

...and then sysfs_create_dir() (without this fix) goes ahead and
de-references parent_sd via sysfs_ns_type():

 return (sd->s_flags & SYSFS_NS_TYPE_MASK) >> SYSFS_NS_TYPE_SHIFT;

Masami Ichikawa 93518dd2eb sysfs: Fix memory leak in sysfs_sd_setsecdata().
This patch fixies follwing two memory leak patterns that reported by kmemleak.
sysfs_sd_setsecdata() is called during sys_lsetxattr() operation.
It checks sd->s_iattr is NULL or not. Then if it is NULL, it calls
sysfs_init_inode_attrs() to allocate memory.
That code is this.

iattrs = sd->s_iattr;
if (!iattrs)
                iattrs = sysfs_init_inode_attrs(sd);

The iattrs recieves sysfs_init_inode_attrs()'s result, but sd->s_iattr
doesn't know the address. so it needs to set correct address to
sd->s_iattr to free memory in other function.

Eric W. Biederman 524b6c5b39 sysfs: Kill nlink counting.
Tracking the number of subdirectories requires an extra field that increases
the size of sysfs_dirent. nlinks are not particularly interesting for sysfs
and the nlink counts are wrong when network namespaces are involved so stop
counting them, and always return nlink == 1. Userspace already knows that
directories with nlink == 1 have an nlink count they can't use to count
subdirectories.

This reduces the size of sysfs_dirent by 8 bytes on 64bit platforms.

Eric W. Biederman 4e4d6d860b sysfs: Add s_hash to sysfs_dirent and order directory entries by hash
Compute a 31 bit hash of directory entries (that can fit in a signed
32bit off_t) and index the sysfs directory entries by that hash,
replacing the per directory indexes by name and by inode. Because we
now only use a single rbtree this reduces the size of sysfs_dirent by 2
pointers. Because we have fewer cases to deal with the code is now
simpler.

For now I use the simple hash that the dcache uses as that is easy to
use and seems simple enough.

In addition to makeing the code simpler using a hash for the file
position in readdir brings sysfs in line with other filesystems that
have non-trivial directory structures.

Eric W. Biederman ce59791936 sysfs: Complain bitterly about attempts to remove files from nonexistent directories.
Recently an OOPS was observed from the usb serial io_ti driver when it tried to remove
sysfs directories. Upon investigation it turns out this driver was always buggy
and that a recent sysfs change had stopped guarding itself against removing attributes
from sysfs directories that had already been removed. :(

Historically we have been silent about attempting to files from nonexistent sysfs
directories and have politely returned error codes. That has resulted in people writing
broken code that ignores the error codes.

Issue a kernel WARNING and a stack backtrace to make it clear in no uncertain
terms that abusing sysfs is not ok, and the callers need to fix their code.

This change transforms the io_ti OOPS into a more comprehensible error message

Eric W. Biederman f6d90b4f9c sysfs: Make sysfs_rename safe with sysfs_dirents in rbtrees.
In sysfs_rename we need to remove the optimization of not calling
sysfs_unlink_sibling and sysfs_link_sibling if the renamed parent
directory is not changing. This optimization is no longer valid now
that sysfs dirents are stored in an rbtree sorted by name.

Move the assignment of s_ns before the call of sysfs_link_sibling. With
no sysfs_dirent fields changing after the call of sysfs_link_sibling
this allows sysfs_link_sibling to take any of the directory entries into
account when it builds the rbtrees, and s_ns looks like a prime canidate

Eric W. Biederman b9e2780d57 sysfs: Remove support for tagged directories with untagged members (again)
In commit 8a9ea3237e ("Merge git://.../davem/net-next") where my sysfs
changes from the net tree merged with the sysfs rbtree changes from
Mickulas Patocka the conflict resolution failed to preserve the
simplified property that was the point of my changes.

That is sysfs_find_dirent can now say something is a match if and only
s_name and s_ns match what we are looking for, and sysfs_readdir can
simply return all of the directory entries where s_ns matches the
directory that we should be returning.

Now that we are back to exact matches we can tweak sysfs_find_dirent and
the name rb_tree to order sysfs_dirents by s_ns s_name and remove the
second loop in sysfs_find_dirent. However that change seems a bit much
for a conflict resolution so it can come later.

sysfs is a core piece of ifrastructure that many people use and

Eric W. Biederman 487505c257 sysfs: Implement support for tagged files in sysfs.
Looking up files in sysfs is hard to understand and analyize because we
currently allow placing untagged files in tagged directories. In the
implementation of that we have two subtly different meanings of NULL.
NULL meaning there is no tag on a directory entry and NULL meaning
we don't care which namespace the lookup is performed for. This
multiple uses of NULL have resulted in subtle bugs (since fixed)
in the code.

Currently it is only the bonding driver that needs to have an untagged
file in a tagged directory.

To untagle this mess I am adding support for tagged files to sysfs.
Modifying the bonding driver to implement bonding_masters as a tagged
file. Registering bonding_masters once for each network namespace.
Then I am removing support for untagged entries in tagged sysfs
directories.

Resulting in code that is much easier to reason about.

sysfs: remove s_sibling hacks

s_sibling was used for three different purposes:
1) as a linked list of entries in the directory
2) as a linked list of entries to be deleted
3) as a pointer to "struct completion"

This patch removes the hack and introduces new union u which
holds pointers for cases 2) and 3).

This change is needed for the following patch that removes s_sibling at all

Al Viro a685e08987 Delay struct net freeing while there's a sysfs instance refering to it
* new refcount in struct net, controlling actual freeing of the memory
	* new method in kobj_ns_type_operations (->drop_ns())
	* ->current_ns() semantics change - it's supposed to be followed by
corresponding ->drop_ns(). For struct net in case of CONFIG_NET_NS it bumps
the new refcount; net_drop_ns() decrements it and calls net_free() if the
last reference has been dropped. Method renamed to ->grab_current_ns().
	* old net_free() callers call net_drop_ns() instead.
	* sysfs_exit_ns() is gone, along with a large part of callchain
leading to it; now that the references stored in ->ns[...] stay valid we
do not need to hunt them down and replace them with NULL. That fixes
problems in sysfs_lookup() and sysfs_readdir(), along with getting rid
of sb->s_instances abuse.

Note that struct net *shutdown* logics has not changed - net_cleanup()
is called exactly when it used to be called. The only thing postponed by
having a sysfs instance refering to that struct net is actual freeing of
memory occupied by struct net.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 82a3242e11 sysfs: remove "last sysfs file:" line from the oops messages
On some arches (x86, sh, arm, unicore, powerpc) the oops message would
print out the last sysfs file accessed.

This was very useful in finding a number of sysfs and driver core bugs
in the 2.5 and early 2.6 development days, but it has been a number of
years since this file has actually helped in debugging anything that
couldn't also be trivially determined from the stack traceback.

So it's time to delete the line. This is good as we need all the space
we can get for oops messages at times on consoles.

David Rientjes 6a108a14fa kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERT
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.

This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).

Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

Eric W. Biederman 96d6523adf sysfs: Don't allow the creation of symlinks we can't remove
Recently my tagged sysfs support revealed a flaw in the device core
that a few rare drivers are running into such that we don't always put
network devices in a class subdirectory named net/.

Since we are not creating the class directory the network devices wind
up in a non-tagged directory, but the symlinks to the network devices
from /sys/class/net are in a tagged directory. All of which works
until we go to remove or rename the symlink. When we remove or rename
a symlink we look in the namespace of the target of the symlink.
Since the target of the symlink is in a non-tagged sysfs directory we
don't have a namespace to look in, and we fail to remove the symlink.

Detect this problem up front and simply don't create symlinks we won't
be able to remove later. This prevents symlink leakage and fails in
a much clearer and more understandable way.

Eric W. Biederman 746edb7ae8 sysfs: Implement sysfs_delete_link
When removing a symlink sysfs_remove_link does not provide
enough information to figure out which tagged directory the symlink
falls in. So I need sysfs_delete_link which is passed the target
of the symlink to delete.

sysfs_rename_link is updated to call sysfs_delete_link instead
of sysfs_remove_link as we have all of the information necessary
and the callers are interesting.

Both of these functions now have enough information to find a symlink
in a tagged directory. The only restriction is that they must be called
before the target kobject is renamed or deleted. If they are called
later I loose track of which tag the target kobject was marked with
and can no longer find the old symlink to remove it.

This patch was split from an earlier patch.

Eric W. Biederman 3ff195b011 sysfs: Implement sysfs tagged directory support.
The problem. When implementing a network namespace I need to be able
to have multiple network devices with the same name. Currently this
is a problem for /sys/class/net/*, /sys/devices/virtual/net/*, and
potentially a few other directories of the form /sys/ ... /net/*.

What this patch does is to add an additional tag field to the
sysfs dirent structure. For directories that should show different
contents depending on the context such as /sys/class/net/, and
/sys/devices/virtual/net/ this tag field is used to specify the
context in which those directories should be visible. Effectively
this is the same as creating multiple distinct directories with
the same name but internally to sysfs the result is nicer.

I am calling the concept of a single directory that looks like multiple
directories all at the same path in the filesystem tagged directories.

For the networking namespace the set of directories whose contents I need
to filter with tags can depend on the presence or absence of hotplug
hardware or which modules are currently loaded. Which means I need
a simple race free way to setup those directories as tagged.

To achieve a reace free design all tagged directories are created
and managed by sysfs itself.

Users of this interface:
- define a type in the sysfs_tag_type enumeration.
- call sysfs_register_ns_types with the type and it's operations
- sysfs_exit_ns when an individual tag is no longer valid

- Implement mount_ns() which returns the ns of the calling process
so we can attach it to a sysfs superblock.
- Implement ktype.namespace() which returns the ns of a syfs kobject.

Everything else is left up to sysfs and the driver layer.

For the network namespace mount_ns and namespace() are essentially
one line functions, and look to remain that.

Tags are currently represented a const void * pointers as that is
both generic, prevides enough information for equality comparisons,
and is trivial to create for current users, as it is just the
existing namespace pointer.

The work needed in sysfs is more extensive. At each directory
or symlink creating I need to check if the directory it is being
created in is a tagged directory and if so generate the appropriate
tag to place on the sysfs_dirent. Likewise at each symlink or
directory removal I need to check if the sysfs directory it is
being removed from is a tagged directory and if so figure out
which tag goes along with the name I am deleting.

Currently only directories which hold kobjects, and
symlinks are supported. There is not enough information
in the current file attribute interfaces to give us anything
to discriminate on which makes it useless, and there are
no potential users which makes it an uninteresting problem
to solve.

Simon Arlott e0f43752a9 bridge: update sysfs link names if port device names have changed
Links for each port are created in sysfs using the device
name, but this could be changed after being added to the
bridge.

As well as being unable to remove interfaces after this
occurs (because userspace tools don't recognise the new
name, and the kernel won't recognise the old name), adding
another interface with the old name to the bridge will
cause an error trying to create the sysfs link.

This fixes the problem by listening for NETDEV_CHANGENAME
notifications and renaming the link.

Tejun Heo 5a0e3ad6af include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py

The script does the followings.

* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.

* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.

* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
  file.

The conversion was done in the following steps.

1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
   files.

2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
   inclusions to around 150 files.

3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.

4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.

5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
   necessary.

6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.

7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).

   * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
   * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * ia64 SMP allmodconfig
   * s390 SMP allmodconfig
   * alpha SMP allmodconfig
   * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig

8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.

Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

Eric W. Biederman f8d4f618fe sysfs: Serialize updates to the vfs inode
The vfs depends upon filesystem methods to update the
vfs inode. Sysfs adds to the normal number of places
where the vfs inode is updated by also updatng the
vfs inode in sysfs_refresh_inode.

Typically the inode mutex is used to serialize updates
to the vfs inode, but grabbing the inode mutex in
sysfs_permission and sysfs_getattr causes deadlocks,
because sometimes the vfs calls those operations with
the inode mutex held. Therefore sysfs can not use the
inode mutex to serial updates to the vfs inode.

The sysfs_mutex is acquired in all of the routines
where sysfs updates the vfs inode, and with a small
change we can consistently protext sysfs vfs inode
updates with the sysfs_mutex. To protect the sysfs
vfs inode updates with the sysfs_mutex simply requires
extending the scope of sysfs_mutex in sysfs_setattr
over inode_setattr, and over inode_change_ok (so we
have an unchanging inode when we perform the check).

Acknowledge that the logical sysfs rwsem has one instance per

There is a sysfs idiom where writing to one sysfs file causes the

sysfs attributes together in one lock class causes lockdep to
generate lots of false positives.

This introduces the requirement that non-static sysfs attributes
need to be initialized with sysfs_attr_init or sysfs_bin_attr_init.
Strictly speaking this requirement only exists when lockdep is
enabled, and when lockdep is enabled we get a bit fat warning
if this requirement is not met.

Holding locks over device_del -> kobject_del -> sysfs_deactivate can
cause deadlocks if those same locks are grabbed in sysfs show or store

The I model s_active count + completion as a sleeping read/write lock.
I describe to lockdep sysfs_get_active as a read_trylock,

for purposes of finding deadlocks, and in my testing gives finds real
issues and ignores non-issues.

This brings us back to holding locks over kobject_del is a problem

Neil Brown 83db93f4de sysfs: Allow sysfs_notify_dirent to be called from interrupt context.
sysfs_notify_dirent is a simple atomic operation that can be used to
alert user-space that new data can be read from a sysfs attribute.

Unfortunately it cannot currently be called from non-process context
because of its use of spin_lock which is sometimes taken with
interrupts enabled.

So change all lockers of sysfs_open_dirent_lock to disable interrupts,
thus making sysfs_notify_dirent safe to be called from non-process
context (as drivers/md does in md_safemode_timeout).

sysfs_get_open_dirent is (documented as being) only called from
process context, so it uses spin_lock_irq. Other places
use spin_lock_irqsave.

The usage for sysfs_notify_dirent in md_safemode_timeout was
introduced in 2.6.28, so this patch is suitable for that and more
recent kernels.

David P. Quigley ddd29ec659 sysfs: Add labeling support for sysfs
This patch adds a setxattr handler to the file, directory, and symlink
inode_operations structures for sysfs. The patch uses hooks introduced in the
previous patch to handle the getting and setting of security information for
the sysfs inodes. As was suggested by Eric Biederman the struct iattr in the
sysfs_dirent structure has been replaced by a structure which contains the
iattr, secdata and secdata length to allow the changes to persist in the event
that the inode representing the sysfs_dirent is evicted. Because sysfs only
stores this information when a change is made all the optional data is moved
into one dynamically allocated field.

This patch addresses an issue where SELinux was denying virtd access to the PCI
configuration entries in sysfs. The lack of setxattr handlers for sysfs
required that a single label be assigned to all entries in sysfs. Granting virtd
access to every entry in sysfs is not an acceptable solution so fine grained
labeling of sysfs is required such that individual entries can be labeled
appropriately.

Although we know that the device_unregister path will never acquire
a lock that a driver might try to acquire in its ->remove, in general
we should never attempt to flush a workqueue from within the same
workqueue, and lockdep rightly complains.

So as long as sysfs attributes cannot commit suicide directly and we
are stuck with this callback mechanism, put the sysfs callbacks on
their own workqueue instead of the global one.

This has the side benefit that if a suicidal sysfs attribute kicks
off a long chain of ->remove callbacks, we no longer induce a long
delay on the global queue.

This also fixes a missing module_put in the error path introduced
by sysfs-only-allow-one-scheduled-removal-callback-per-kobj.patch.

We never destroy the workqueue, but I'm not sure that's a
problem.

Hugh Dickins 095160aee9 sysfs: fix some bin_vm_ops errors
Commit 86c9508eb1c0ce5aa07b5cf1d36b60c54efc3d7a
"sysfs: don't block indefinitely for unmapped files" in linux-next
crashes the PowerMac G5 when X starts up. It's caught out by the way
powerpc's pci_mmap of legacy_mem uses shmem_zero_setup(), substituting
a new vma->vm_file whose private_data no longer points to the bin_buffer
(substitution done because some versions of X crash if that mmap fails).

The fix to this is straightforward: the original vm_file is fput() in
that case, so this mmap won't block sysfs at all, so just don't switch
over to bin_vm_ops if vm_file has changed.

But more fixes made before realizing that was the problem:-

It should not be an error if bin_page_mkwrite() finds no underlying
page_mkwrite().

Check that a file already mmap'ed has the same underlying vm_ops
_before_ pointing vma->vm_ops at bin_vm_ops.

If the file being mmap'ed is a shmem/tmpfs file, don't fail the mmap
on CONFIG_NUMA=y, just because that has a set_policy and get_policy:
provide bin_set_policy, bin_get_policy and bin_migrate.

Alex Chiang 669420644c sysfs: only allow one scheduled removal callback per kobj
The only way for a sysfs attribute to remove itself (without
deadlock) is to use the sysfs_schedule_callback() interface.

Vegard Nossum discovered that a poorly written sysfs ->store
callback can repeatedly schedule remove callbacks on the same
device over and over, e.g.

	$ while true ; do echo 1 > /sys/devices/.../remove ; done

If the 'remove' attribute uses the sysfs_schedule_callback API
and also does not protect itself from concurrent accesses, its
callback handler will be called multiple times, and will
eventually attempt to perform operations on a freed kobject,
leading to many problems.

Instead of requiring all callers of sysfs_schedule_callback to
implement their own synchronization, provide the protection in
the infrastructure.

Now, sysfs_schedule_callback will only allow one scheduled
callback per kobject. On subsequent calls with the same kobject,
return -EAGAIN.

This is a short term fix. The long term fix is to allow sysfs
attributes to remove themselves directly, without any of this
callback hokey pokey.

Eric W. Biederman e0edd3c65a sysfs: don't block indefinitely for unmapped files.
Modify sysfs bin files so that we can remove the bin file while they are
still mapped. When the kobject is removed we unmap the bin file and
arrange for future accesses to the mapping to receive SIGBUS.

Implementing this prevents a nasty DOS when pci devices are hot plugged
and unplugged. Where if any of their resources were mmaped the kernel
could not free up their pci resources or release their pci data
structures.

As inode creation is protected by sysfs_mutex, ilookup5_nowait()
always either fails to find at all or finds one which is fully

Yes, it is a real bug by the looks. bin.c takes bb->mutex under mmap_sem
when it is mmapped, and then does its copy_*_user under bb->mutex too.

Here is a basic fix for the sysfs lor.

Neil Brown f1282c844e sysfs: Support sysfs_notify from atomic context with new sysfs_notify_dirent
Support sysfs_notify from atomic context with new sysfs_notify_dirent

sysfs_notify currently takes sysfs_mutex.
This means that it cannot be called in atomic context.
sysfs_mutex is sometimes held over a malloc (sysfs_rename_dir)
so it can block on low memory.

In md I want to be able to notify on a sysfs attribute from
atomic context, and I don't want to block on low memory because I
could be in the writeout path for freeing memory.

So:
 - export the "sysfs_dirent" structure along with sysfs_get, sysfs_put
and sysfs_get_dirent so I can get the sysfs_dirent that I want to
notify on and hold it in an md structure.
 - split sysfs_notify_dirent out of sysfs_notify so the sysfs_dirent
can be notified on with no blocking (just a spinlock).

Stephen Hemminger 0599ad53fe sysfs: remove error messages for -EEXIST case
It is possible that the entry in sysfs already exists, one case of this is
when a network device is renamed to bonding_masters. Anyway, in this case
the proper error path is for device_rename to return an error code, not to
generate bogus backtrace and errors.

Also, to avoid possible races, the create link should be done before the
remove link. This makes a device rename atomic operation like other renames.

Ben Hutchings 40a2159abf sysfs: Disallow truncation of files in sysfs
sysfs allows attribute files to be truncated, e.g. using ftruncate(), with the
expected effect on their inode. For most attributes, this doesn't change the
"real" size of the file i.e. how much can be read from it. However, the
parameter validation for reading and writing binary attribute files is based
on the inode size and not the size specified in the file's bin_attribute, so it
can be broken by this. For example, if we try using dd to write to such a file:

# pwd
/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:08:00.0
# ls -l config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Feb 1 17:35 config
# dd if=/dev/zero of=config bs=4 count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
# ls -l config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Feb 1 17:50 config
# dd if=/dev/zero of=config bs=4 count=1 seek=128
dd: writing `config': No space left on device
1+0 records in
0+0 records out

Also, after truncation to 0, parameter validation for read and write is
disabled. Most bin_attribute read and write methods also validate the size and
offset, but for some this will allow out-of-range access. This may be a
security issue, though access to such files is often limited to root. In any
case, the validation should remain for safety's sake!)

This was previously reported in Bugzilla as bug 9867.

sysfs should ignore size changes or else refuse them (by returning -EINVAL).
This patch makes it ignore them.

Dan Williams 2424b5dd06 sysfs: refill attribute buffer when reading from offset 0
Requiring userspace to close and re-open sysfs attributes has been the
policy since before 2.6.12. It allows userspace to get a consistent
snapshot of kernel state and consume it with incremental reads and seeks.

Now, if the file position is zero the kernel assumes userspace wants to see
the new value. The application for this change is to allow a userspace
RAID metadata handler to check the state of an array without causing any
memory allocations. Thus not causing writeback to a raid array that might
be blocked waiting for userspace to take action.

Miao Xie 8118a859dc sysfs: fix off-by-one error in fill_read_buffer()
I found that there is a off-by-one problem in the following code.

Version:	2.6.24-rc2
File: fs/sysfs/file.c:118-122
Function:	fill_read_buffer
--------------------------------------------------------------------
	count = ops->show(kobj, attr_sd->s_attr.attr, buffer->page);

	sysfs_put_active_two(attr_sd);

	BUG_ON(count > (ssize_t)PAGE_SIZE);
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Because according to the specification of the sysfs and the implement of
the show methods, the show methods return the number of bytes which would
be generated for the given input, excluding the trailing null.So if the
return value of the show methods equals PAGE_SIZE - 1, the buffer is full
in fact. And if the return value equals PAGE_SIZE, the resulting string
was already truncated,or buffer overflow occurred.

This patch fixes an off-by-one error in fill_read_buffer.

Try to fix the mess created by sysfs braindamage.

 - refactor code internal to fs/namei.c a little to avoid too much
   duplication:
	o __lookup_hash_kern is renamed back to __lookup_hash
o the old __lookup_hash goes away, permission checks moves to
	  the two callers
o useless inline qualifiers on above functions go away
 - lookup_one_len_kern loses it's last argument and is renamed to
lookup_one_noperm to make it's useage a little more clear
 - added kerneldoc comments to describe lookup_one_len aswell as

Tejun Heo a4e8b91254 sysfs: move sysfs file poll implementation to sysfs_open_dirent
Sysfs file poll implementation is scattered over sysfs and kobject.
Event numbering is done in sysfs_dirent but wait itself is done on
kobject. This not only unecessarily bloats both kobject and
sysfs_dirent but is also buggy - if a sysfs_dirent is removed while
there still are pollers, the associaton betwen the kobject and
sysfs_dirent breaks and kobject may be freed with the pollers still
sleeping on it.

This patch moves whole poll implementation into sysfs_open_dirent.
Each time a sysfs_open_dirent is created, event number restarts from 1
and pollers sleep on sysfs_open_dirent. As event sequence number is
meaningless without any open file and pollers should have open file
and thus sysfs_open_dirent, this ephemeral event counting works and is
a saner implementation.

This patch fixes the dnagling sleepers bug and reduces the sizes of
kobject and sysfs_dirent by one pointer.

that the structure of sysfs not change while we are performing

At some point someone wrote sysfs_readdir to insert a cursor
into the list of sysfs_dirents to ensure that sysfs_readdir would
restart properly. That works but it is complex code and tends
to be expensive.

The same effect can be achieved by keeping the sysfs_dirents in
inode order and using the inode number as the f_pos. Then
when we restart we just have to find the first dirent whose inode
number is equal or greater then the last sysfs_dirent we attempted
to return.

Removing the sysfs directory cursor also allows the remove of
all of the mysterious checks for sysfs_type(sd) != 0. Which
were nonbovious checks to see if a cursor was in a directory list.

Tejun Heo ff869de7bf sysfs: simplify sysfs_rename_dir()
With the shadow directories gone, sysfs_rename_dir() can be simplified.

* parent doesn't need to be grabbed separately. Just access
  old_dentry->d_parent.

* parent sd can never change. Remove code to move under the new
  parent.

* Massage comments a bit.

Tejun Heo a7a0475497 sysfs: cosmetic changes in sysfs_lookup()
* remove space between * and symbol name in variable declaration.

* kill unnecessary new line.

* kill 'found' and test 'sd' instead.

Eric W. Biederman 90bc61359d sysfs: Remove first pass at shadow directory support
While shadow directories appear to be a good idea, the current scheme
of controlling their creation and destruction outside of sysfs appears
to be a locking and maintenance nightmare in the face of sysfs
directories dynamically coming and going. Which can now occur for
directories containing network devices when CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is
not set.

This patch removes everything from the initial shadow directory support
that allowed the shadow directory creation to be controlled at a higher
level. So except for a few bits of sysfs_rename_dir everything from
commit b592fcfe7f is now gone.
