Anshuman Khandual 1c2f7d14d8 mm/thp: define default pmd_pgtable()
Currently most platforms define pmd_pgtable() as pmd_page() duplicating
the same code all over. Instead just define a default value i.e
pmd_page() for pmd_pgtable() and let platforms override when required via
<asm/pgtable.h>. All the existing platform that override pmd_pgtable()
have been moved into their respective <asm/pgtable.h> header in order to
precede before the new generic definition. This makes it much cleaner
with reduced code.

Linus Walleij 5615f69bc2 ARM: 9016/2: Initialize the mapping of KASan shadow memory
This patch initializes KASan shadow region's page table and memory.
There are two stage for KASan initializing:

1. At early boot stage the whole shadow region is mapped to just
one physical page (kasan_zero_page). It is finished by the function
kasan_early_init which is called by __mmap_switched(arch/arm/kernel/
   head-common.S)

2. After the calling of paging_init, we use kasan_zero_page as zero
shadow for some memory that KASan does not need to track, and we
allocate a new shadow space for the other memory that KASan need to
track. These issues are finished by the function kasan_init which is
   call by setup_arch.

When using KASan we also need to increase the THREAD_SIZE_ORDER
from 1 to 2 as the extra calls for shadow memory uses quite a bit
of stack.

As we need to make a temporary copy of the PGD when setting up
shadow memory we create a helpful PGD_SIZE definition for both
LPAE and non-LPAE setups.

The KASan core code unconditionally calls pud_populate() so this
needs to be changed from BUG() to do {} while (0) when building
with KASan enabled.

After the initial development by Andre Ryabinin several modifications
have been made to this code:

Abbott Liu <liuwenliang@huawei.com>
- Add support ARM LPAE: If LPAE is enabled, KASan shadow region's
mapping table need be copied in the pgd_alloc() function.
- Change kasan_pte_populate,kasan_pmd_populate,kasan_pud_populate,
  kasan_pgd_populate from .meminit.text section to .init.text section.
  Reported by Florian Fainelli <f.fainelli@gmail.com>

Linus Walleij <linus.walleij@linaro.org>:
- Drop the custom mainpulation of TTBR0 and just use
cpu_switch_mm() to switch the pgd table.
- Adopt to handle 4th level page tabel folding.
- Rewrite the entire page directory and page entry initialization
sequence to be recursive based on ARM64:s kasan_init.c.

Ard Biesheuvel <ardb@kernel.org>:
- Necessary underlying fixes.
- Crucial bug fixes to the memory set-up code.

Mike Rapoport 1355c31eeb asm-generic: pgalloc: provide generic pmd_alloc_one() and pmd_free_one()
For most architectures that support >2 levels of page tables,
pmd_alloc_one() is a wrapper for __get_free_pages(), sometimes with
__GFP_ZERO and sometimes followed by memset(0) instead.

More elaborate versions on arm64 and x86 account memory for the user page
tables and call to pgtable_pmd_page_ctor() as the part of PMD page
initialization.

Move the arm64 version to include/asm-generic/pgalloc.h and use the
generic version on several architectures.

The pgtable_pmd_page_ctor() is a NOP when ARCH_ENABLE_SPLIT_PMD_PTLOCK is
not enabled, so there is no functional change for most architectures
except of the addition of __GFP_ACCOUNT for allocation of user page
tables.

The pmd_free() is a wrapper for free_page() in all the cases, so no
functional change here.

Nicholas Piggin 13224794cb mm: remove quicklist page table caches
Patch series "mm: remove quicklist page table caches".

A while ago Nicholas proposed to remove quicklist page table caches [1].

I've rebased his patch on the curren upstream and switched ia64 and sh to
use generic versions of PTE allocation.

[1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/20190711030339.20892-1-npiggin@gmail.com

This patch (of 3):

Remove page table allocator "quicklists". These have been around for a
long time, but have not got much traction in the last decade and are only
used on ia64 and sh architectures.

The numbers in the initial commit look interesting but probably don't
apply anymore. If anybody wants to resurrect this it's in the git
history, but it's unhelpful to have this code and divergent allocator
behaviour for minor archs.

Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page
allocator if this is still so slow.

Mike Rapoport 28bcf59375 arm: switch to generic version of pte allocation
Replace __get_free_page() and alloc_pages() calls with the generic
__pte_alloc_one_kernel() and __pte_alloc_one().

There is no functional change for the kernel PTE allocation.

The difference for the user PTEs, is that the clear_pte_table() is now
called after pgtable_page_ctor() and the addition of __GFP_ACCOUNT to the
GFP flags.

The conversion to the generic version of pte_free_kernel() removes the NULL
check for pte.

The pte_free() version on arm is identical to the generic one and can be
simply dropped.

Joel Fernandes (Google) 4cf5892495 mm: treewide: remove unused address argument from pte_alloc functions
Patch series "Add support for fast mremap".

This series speeds up the mremap(2) syscall by copying page tables at
the PMD level even for non-THP systems. There is concern that the extra
'address' argument that mremap passes to pte_alloc may do something
subtle architecture related in the future that may make the scheme not
work. Also we find that there is no point in passing the 'address' to
pte_alloc since its unused. This patch therefore removes this argument
tree-wide resulting in a nice negative diff as well. Also ensuring
along the way that the enabled architectures do not do anything funky
with the 'address' argument that goes unnoticed by the optimization.

Build and boot tested on x86-64. Build tested on arm64. The config
enablement patch for arm64 will be posted in the future after more
testing.

The changes were obtained by applying the following Coccinelle script.
(thanks Julia for answering all Coccinelle questions!).
Following fix ups were done manually:
* Removal of address argument from pte_fragment_alloc
* Removal of pte_alloc_one_fast definitions from m68k and microblaze.

// Options: --include-headers --no-includes
// Note: I split the 'identifier fn' line, so if you are manually
// running it, please unsplit it so it runs for you.

Michal Hocko 32d6bd9059 tree wide: get rid of __GFP_REPEAT for order-0 allocations part I
This is the third version of the patchset previously sent [1]. I have
basically only rebased it on top of 4.7-rc1 tree and dropped "dm: get
rid of superfluous gfp flags" which went through dm tree. I am sending
it now because it is tree wide and chances for conflicts are reduced
considerably when we want to target rc2. I plan to send the next step
and rename the flag and move to a better semantic later during this
release cycle so we will have a new semantic ready for 4.8 merge window
hopefully.

Motivation:

While working on something unrelated I've checked the current usage of
__GFP_REPEAT in the tree. It seems that a majority of the usage is and
always has been bogus because __GFP_REPEAT has always been about costly
high order allocations while we are using it for order-0 or very small
orders very often. It seems that a big pile of them is just a
copy&paste when a code has been adopted from one arch to another.

I think it makes some sense to get rid of them because they are just
making the semantic more unclear. Please note that GFP_REPEAT is
documented as

* __GFP_REPEAT: Try hard to allocate the memory, but the allocation attempt

* _might_ fail. This depends upon the particular VM implementation.
while !costly requests have basically nofail semantic. So one could
reasonably expect that order-0 request with __GFP_REPEAT will not loop
for ever. This is not implemented right now though.

I would like to move on with __GFP_REPEAT and define a better semantic
for it.

  $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT origin/master | wc -l
  111
  $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT | wc -l
  36

So we are down to the third after this patch series. The remaining
places really seem to be relying on __GFP_REPEAT due to large allocation
requests. This still needs some double checking which I will do later
after all the simple ones are sorted out.

I am touching a lot of arch specific code here and I hope I got it right
but as a matter of fact I even didn't compile test for some archs as I
do not have cross compiler for them. Patches should be quite trivial to
review for stupid compile mistakes though. The tricky parts are usually
hidden by macro definitions and thats where I would appreciate help from
arch maintainers.

[1] http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1461849846-27209-1-git-send-email-mhocko@kernel.org

This patch (of 19):

__GFP_REPEAT has a rather weak semantic but since it has been introduced
around 2.6.12 it has been ignored for low order allocations. Yet we
have the full kernel tree with its usage for apparently order-0
allocations. This is really confusing because __GFP_REPEAT is
explicitly documented to allow allocation failures which is a weaker
semantic than the current order-0 has (basically nofail).

Let's simply drop __GFP_REPEAT from those places. This would allow to
identify place which really need allocator to retry harder and formulate
a more specific semantic for what the flag is supposed to do actually.

Catalin Marinas da02877987 ARM: LPAE: Page table maintenance for the 3-level format
This patch modifies the pgd/pmd/pte manipulation functions to support
the 3-level page table format. Since there is no need for an 'ext'
argument to cpu_set_pte_ext(), this patch conditionally defines a
different prototype for this function when CONFIG_ARM_LPAE.

The patch also introduces the L_PGD_SWAPPER flag to mark pgd entries
pointing to pmd tables pre-allocated in the swapper_pg_dir and avoid
trying to free them at run-time. This flag is 0 with the classic page
table format.

Russell King a32618d28d ARM: pgtable: switch to use pgtable-nopud.h
Nick Piggin noted upon introducing 4level-fixup.h:

| Add a temporary "fallback" header so architectures can run with
| the 4level pagetables patch without modification. All architectures
| should be converted to use the folding headers (include/asm-generic/
| pgtable-nop?d.h) as soon as possible, and the fallback header removed.

This makes ARM compliant with this statement.

Catalin Marinas 442e70c0b3 ARM: 7076/1: LPAE: Add (pte|pmd)val_t type definitions as u32
This patch defines the (pte|pmd)val_t as u32 and changes the page table
types to be based on these. The PMD bits are converted to the
corresponding type using the _AT macro.

The flush_pmd_entry/clean_pmd_entry argument was changed to (void *) to
allow them to be used with both PGD and PMD pointers and avoid code
duplication.

Uwe Kleine-König 97594b0f35 ARM: 6757/1: fix tlb.h induced linux/swap.h build failure
Commit

06824ba (ARM: tlb: delay page freeing for SMP and ARMv7 CPUs)

introduced a build failure for builds with CONFIG_SWAP=n:

	In file included from arch/arm/mm/init.c:27:
	arch/arm/include/asm/tlb.h: In function 'tlb_flush_mmu':
arch/arm/include/asm/tlb.h:101: error: implicit declaration of function 'release_pages'
	arch/arm/include/asm/tlb.h: In function 'tlb_remove_page':
arch/arm/include/asm/tlb.h:165: error: implicit declaration of function 'page_cache_release'

as linux/swap.h doesn't include linux/pagemap.h but actually needs it
(see comments in linux/swap.h as to why this is.)

Fix that by #including <linux/pagemap.h> in <asm/pgalloc.h> as it's done
by x86.

Russell King d30e45eeab ARM: pgtable: switch order of Linux vs hardware page tables
This switches the ordering of the Linux vs hardware page tables in
each page, thereby eliminating some of the arithmetic in the page
table walks. As we now place the Linux page table at the beginning
of the page, we can deal with the offset in the pgt by simply masking
it away, along with the other control bits.

This also makes the arithmetic all be positive, rather than a mixture.

Add the ARM implementation of highpte, which allows PTE tables to be
placed in highmem. Unfortunately, we do not offer highpte support
when support for L2 cache is enabled.
