Jeff King 506ebaac96 help: mark unused parameter in git_unknown_cmd_config()
The extra callback parameter became unused in 0918d08887 (help.c: fix
autocorrect in work tree for bare repository, 2022-10-29), but we can't
get rid of it because we must conform to the config callback interface.

Elijah Newren a64215b6cd object.h: stop depending on cache.h; make cache.h depend on object.h
Things should be able to depend on object.h without pulling in all of
cache.h. Move an enum to allow this.

Note that a couple files previously depended on things brought in
through cache.h indirectly (revision.h -> commit.h -> object.h ->
cache.h). As such, this change requires making existing dependencies
more explicit in half a dozen files. The inclusion of strbuf.h in
some headers if of particular note: these headers directly embedded a
strbuf in some new structs, meaning they should have been including
strbuf.h all along but were indirectly getting the necessary
definitions.

Simon Gerber 0918d08887 help.c: fix autocorrect in work tree for bare repository
Currently, auto correction doesn't work reliably for commands which must
run in a work tree (e.g. `git status`) in Git work trees which are
created from a bare repository.

As far as I'm able to determine, this has been broken since commit
659fef199f (help: use early config when autocorrecting aliases,
2017-06-14), where the call to `git_config()` in `help_unknown_cmd()`
was replaced with a call to `read_early_config()`. From what I can tell,
the actual cause for the unexpected error is that we call
`git_default_config()` in the `git_unknown_cmd_config` callback instead
of simply returning `0` for config entries which we aren't interested
in.

Calling `git_default_config()` in this callback to `read_early_config()`
seems like a bad idea since those calls will initialize a bunch of state
in `environment.c` (among other things `is_bare_repository_cfg`) before
we've properly detected that we're running in a work tree.

All other callbacks provided to `read_early_config()` appear to only
extract their configurations while simply returning `0` for all other
config keys.

This commit changes the `git_unknown_cmd_config` callback to not call
`git_default_config()`. Instead we also simply return `0` for config
keys which we're not interested in.

Additionally the commit adds a new test case covering `help.autocorrect`
in a work tree created from a bare clone.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 8c9e292dc0 doc txt & -h consistency: add missing options and labels
Fix various issues of SYNOPSIS and -h output syntax where:

 * Options such as --force were missing entirely
 * ...or the short option, such as -f

 * We said "opts" or "options", but could instead enumerate
the (small) set of supported options

 * Options that were missing entirely (ls-remote's --sort=<key>)

As we can specify "--sort" multiple times (it's backed by a
string-list" it should really be "[(--sort=<key>)...]", which is
what "git for-each-ref" lists it as, but let's leave that issue for
a subsequent cleanup, and stop at making these consistent. Other
"ref-filter.h" users share the same issue, e.g. "git-branch.txt".

 * For "verify-tag" and "verify-commit" we were missing the "--raw"
   option.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 5cf88fd8b0 git-compat-util.h: use "UNUSED", not "UNUSED(var)"
As reported in [1] the "UNUSED(var)" macro introduced in
2174b8c75de (Merge branch 'jk/unused-annotation' into next,
2022-08-24) breaks coccinelle's parsing of our sources in files where
it occurs.

Let's instead partially go with the approach suggested in [2] of
making this not take an argument. As noted in [1] "coccinelle" will
ignore such tokens in argument lists that it doesn't know about, and
it's less of a surprise to syntax highlighters.

This undoes the "help us notice when a parameter marked as unused is
actually use" part of 9b24034754 (git-compat-util: add UNUSED macro,
2022-08-19), a subsequent commit will further tweak the macro to
implement a replacement for that functionality.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 844739ba27 git docs: add a category for file formats, protocols and interfaces
Create a new "File formats, protocols and other developer interfaces"
section in the main "git help git" manual page and start moving the
documentation that now lives in "Documentation/technical/*.git" over
to it. This complements the newly added and adjacent "Repository,
command and file interfaces" section.

This makes the technical documentation more accessible and
discoverable. Before this we wouldn't install it by default, and had
no ability to build man page versions of them. The links to them from
our existing documentation link to the generated HTML version of these
docs.

So let's start moving those over, starting with just the
"bundle-format.txt" documentation added in 7378ec90e1 (doc: describe
Git bundle format, 2020-02-07). We'll now have a new
gitformat-bundle(5) man page. Subsequent commits will move more git
internal format documentation over.

Unfortunately the syntax of the current Documentation/technical/*.txt
is not the same (when it comes to section headings etc.) as our
Documentation/*.txt documentation, so change the relevant bits of
syntax as we're moving this over.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason d976c5100f git docs: add a category for user-facing file, repo and command UX
Create a new "Repository, command and file interfaces" section in the
main "git help git" manual page. Move things that belong under this
new criteria from the generic "Guides" section.

The "Guides" section was added in f442f28a81 (git.txt: add list of
guides, 2020-08-05). It makes sense to have e.g. "giteveryday(7)" and
"gitfaq(7)" listed under "Guides".

But placing e.g. "gitignore(5)" in it is stretching the meaning of
what a "guide" is, ideally that section should list things similar to
"giteveryday(7)" and "gitcore-tutorial(7)".

An alternate name that was considered for this new section was "User
formats", for consistency with the nomenclature used for man section 5
in general. My man(1) lists it as "File formats and conventions,
e.g. /etc/passwd".

So calling this "git help --formats" or "git help --user-formats"
would make sense for e.g. gitignore(5), but would be stretching it
somewhat for githooks(5), and would seem really suspect for the likes
of gitcli(7).

Let's instead pick a name that's closer to the generic term "User
interface", which is really what this documentation discusses: General
user-interface documentation that doesn't obviously belong elsewhere.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 936b8eb6c8 help.c: remove common category behavior from drop_prefix() behavior
Change the behavior of the "git" prefix stripping for CAT_guide so
that we don't try to strip the "git-" prefix in that case. We should
be stripping either "git" or "git-" depending on the category. This
change makes it easier to add extra "category" conditions in
subsequent commits.

Before this we'd in principle strip a "git-" prefix from a "guide" in
command-list.txt, in practice we have no such entry there. As we don't
have any entry that looks like "git-foo" in command-list.txt this
changes nothing in practice, but it makes the intent of the code
clearer. In that hypothetical case we'd now strip it down to "-foo",
not "foo".

When this code was added in cfb22a02ab (help: use command-list.h for
common command list, 2018-05-10) the only entries in command-list.txt
that didn't begin with "git-" were "gitweb" and "gitk".

Then when the "guides" special-case was added in 1b81d8cb19 (help:
use command-list.txt for the source of guides, 2018-05-20) we had the
various "git" (not "git-") prefixed "guide" entries, which the
"CAT_guide" case handles.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 2f8b3ea662 help.c: refactor drop_prefix() to use a "switch" statement"
Refactor the drop_prefix() function in in help.c to make it easier to
strip prefixes from categories that aren't "CAT_guide". There are no
functional changes here, by doing this we make a subsequent functional
change's diff smaller.

As before we first try to strip "git-" unconditionally, if that works
we'll return the stripped string. Then we'll strip "git" if the
command is in "CAT_guide".

This means that we'd in principle strip "git-foo" down to "foo" if
it's in CAT_guide. That doesn't make much sense, and we don't have
such an entry in command-list.txt, but let's preserve that behavior
for now.

While we're at it remove a stray newline that had been added after the
"return name;" statement.

Jeff Hostetler dd77cf61a1 help: include fsmonitor--daemon feature flag in version info
Add the "feature: fsmonitor--daemon" message to the output of
`git version --build-options`.

The builtin FSMonitor is only available on certain platforms and
even then only when certain Makefile flags are enabled, so print
a message in the verbose version output when it is available.

This can be used by test scripts for prereq testing. Granted, tests
could just try `git fsmonitor--daemon status` and look for a 128 exit
code or grep for a "not supported" message on stderr, but these
methods are rather obscure.

The main advantage is that the feature message will automatically
appear in bug reports and other support requests.

This concept was also used during the development of Scalar for
similar reasons.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 93de1b6999 help: don't print "\n" before single-section output
Fix a formatting regression in 1b81d8cb19 (help: use command-list.txt
for the source of guides, 2018-05-20). Adjust the output of "git help
--guides" and any other future single-section commands so that a
newline isn't inserted before the only section being printed.

This changes the output from:

    $ git help --guides

    The Git concept guides are:
    [...]

To:

    $ git help --guides
    The Git concept guides are:
    [...]

That we started printing an extra "\n" in 1b81d8cb19 wasn't intended,
but an emergent effect of moving all of the printing of "git help"
output to code that was ready to handle printing N sections.

With 1b81d8cb19 we started using the "print_cmd_by_category()"
function added earlier in the same series, or in cfb22a02ab (help:
use command-list.h for common command list, 2018-05-10).

Fixing this formatting nit is easy enough. Let's have all of the
output that would like to be "\n"-separated from other lines emit its
own "\n". We then adjust "print_cmd_by_category()" to only print a
"\n" to delimit the sections it's printing out.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 06fa4db3f7 help: move column config discovery to help.c library
When a git_config() call was added in dbfae68969 (help: reuse
print_columns() for help -a, 2012-04-13) to read the column config
we'd always use the resulting "colopts" variable.

Then in 63eae83f8f (help: add "-a --verbose" to list all commands
with synopsis, 2018-05-20) we started only using the "colopts" config
under "--all" if "--no-verbose" was also given, but the "git_config()"
call was not moved inside the "verbose" branch of the code.

This change effectively does that, we'll only call list_commands()
under "--all --no-verbose", so let's have it look up the config it
needs. See 26c7d06783 (help -a: improve and make --verbose default, 2018-09-29) for another case in help.c where we look up config.

Johannes Schindelin 722fc37491 help: do not expect built-in commands to be hardlinked
When building with SKIP_DASHED_BUILT_INS=YesPlease, the built-in
commands are no longer present in the `PATH` as hardlinks to `git`.

As a consequence, `load_command_list()` needs to be taught to find the
names of the built-in commands from elsewhere.

This only affected the output of `git --list-cmds=main`, but not the
output of `git help -a` because the latter includes the built-in
commands by virtue of them being listed in command-list.txt.

The bug was detected via a patch series that turns the merge strategies

`load_command_list()` to determine the list of available merge

Jeff King f1de981e8b config: fix leaks from git_config_get_string_const()
There are two functions to get a single config string:

  - git_config_get_string()

  - git_config_get_string_const()

One might naively think that the first one allocates a new string and
the second one just points us to the internal configset storage. But
in fact they both allocate a new copy; the second one exists only to
avoid having to cast when using it with a const global which we never
intend to free.

The documentation for the function explains that clearly, but it seems
I'm not alone in being surprised by this. Of 17 calls to the function,
13 of them leak the resulting value.

We could obviously fix these by adding the appropriate free(). But it
would be simpler still if we actually had a non-allocating way to get
the string. There's git_config_get_value() but that doesn't quite do
what we want. If the config key is present but is a boolean with no
value (e.g., "[foo]bar" in the file), then we'll get NULL (whereas the
string versions will print an error and die).

So let's introduce a new variant, git_config_get_string_tmp(), that
behaves as these callers expect. We need a new name because we have new
semantics but the same function signature (so even if we converted the
four remaining callers, topics in flight might be surprised). The "tmp"
is because this value should only be held onto for a short time. In
practice it's rare for us to clear and refresh the configset,
invalidating the pointer, but hopefully the "tmp" makes callers think
about the lifetime. In each of the converted cases here the value only
needs to last within the local function or its immediate caller.

Since 1b81d8cb19 (help: use command-list.txt for the source of guides,
2018-05-20), all man5/man7 guides listed in command-list.txt appear in
the output of 'git help -g'.

However, 'git help -g' still prefixes this list with "The common Git
guides are:", which makes one wonder if there are others!

In the same spirit, the man page for 'git help' describes the '--guides'
option as listing 'useful' guides, which is not false per se but can
also be taken to mean that there are other guides that exist but are not
useful.

Instead of 'common' and 'useful', use 'Git concept guides' in both
places. To keep the code in line with this change, rename
help.c::list_common_guides_help to list_guides_help.

Emily Shaffer 39f4919dc5 help: add shell-path to --build-options
It may be useful to know which shell Git was built to try to point to,
in the event that shell-based Git commands are failing. $SHELL_PATH is
set during the build and used to launch the manpage viewer, as well as
by git-compat-util.h, and it's used during tests. 'git version
--build-options' is encouraged for use in bug reports, so it makes sense
to include this information there.

Emily Shaffer 617d57195a bugreport: gather git version and build info
Knowing which version of Git a user has and how it was built allows us
to more precisely pin down the circumstances when a certain issue
occurs, so teach bugreport how to tell us the same output as 'git
version --build-options'.

It's not ideal to directly call 'git version --build-options' because
that output goes to stdout. Instead, wrap the version string in a helper
within help.[ch] library, and call that helper from within the bugreport
library.

Emily Shaffer 709df95b78 help: move list_config_help to builtin/help
Starting in 3ac68a93fd, help.o began to depend on builtin/branch.o,
builtin/clean.o, and builtin/config.o. This meant that help.o was
unusable outside of the context of the main Git executable.

To make help.o usable by other commands again, move list_config_help()
into builtin/help.c (where it makes sense to assume other builtin libraries
are present).

When command-list.h is included but a member is not used, we start to
hear a compiler warning. Since the config list is generated in a fairly
different way than the command list, and since commands and config
options are semantically different, move the config list into its own
header and move the generator into its own script and build rule.

For reasons explained in 976aaedc (msvc: add a Makefile target to
pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, 2019-07-29), some build
artifacts we consider non-source files cannot be generated in the
Visual Studio environment, and we already have some Makefile tweaks
to help Visual Studio to use generated command-list.h header file.
Do the same to a new generated file, config-list.h, introduced by
this change.

Jeff King 2ed2e19958 help_unknown_ref(): check for refname ambiguity
When the user asks to merge "foo" and we suggest "origin/foo" instead,
we do so by simply chopping off "refs/remotes/" from the front of the
suggested ref. This is usually fine, but it's possible that the
resulting name is ambiguous (e.g., you have "refs/heads/origin/foo",
too).

Let's use shorten_unambiguous_ref() to do this the right way, which
should usually yield the same "origin/foo", but "remotes/origin/foo" if
necessary.

Note that in this situation there may be other options (e.g., we could
suggest "heads/origin/foo" as well). I'll leave that up for debate; the
focus here is just to avoid giving advice that does not actually do what
we expect.

Jeff King 8ed51b0666 help_unknown_ref(): duplicate collected refnames
When "git merge" sees an unknown refname, we iterate through the refs to
try to suggest some possible alternates. We do so with for_each_ref(),
and in the callback we add some of the refnames we get to a
string_list that is declared with NODUP, directly adding a pointer into
the refname string our callback received.

But the for_each_ref() machinery does not promise that the refname
string will remain valid, and as a result we may print garbage memory.

The code in question dates back to its inception in e56181060e (help:
add help_unknown_ref(), 2013-05-04). But back then, the refname strings
generally did remain stable, at least immediately after the
for_each_ref() call. Later, in d1cf15516f (packed_ref_iterator_begin():
iterate using `mmapped_ref_iterator`, 2017-09-25), we started
consistently re-using a separate buffer for packed refs.

The fix is simple: duplicate the strings we intend to collect. We
already call string_list_clear(), so the memory is correctly freed.

Jeff King 057ab54b66 completion: fix multiple command removals
Commit 6532f3740b ("completion: allow to customize the completable
command list", 2018-05-20) tried to allow multiple space-separated
entries in completion.commands. To do this, it copies each parsed token
into a strbuf so that the result is NUL-terminated.

However, for tokens starting with "-", it accidentally passes the
original non-terminated string, meaning that only the final one worked.
Switch to using the strbuf.

Jeff King 83b0ecf333 git: read local config in --list-cmds
Normally code that is checking config before we've decided to do
setup_git_directory() would use read_early_config(), which uses
discover_git_directory() to tentatively see if we're in a repo,
and if so to add it to the config sequence.

But list_cmds() uses the caching configset mechanism which
rightly does not use read_early_config(), because it has no
idea if it's being called early.

Call setup_git_directory_gently() so we can pick up repo-level
config (like completion.commands).

Johannes Schindelin 1c4b985965 help -a: handle aliases with long names gracefully
We take pains to determine the longest command beforehand, so that we
can align the category column after printing the command names.

However, then we re-use that value when printing the aliases. If any
alias name is longer than the longest command name, we consequently try
to add a negative number of spaces (but `mput_char()` does not expect
any negative values and simply decrements until the value is 0, i.e.
it tries to add close to 2**31 spaces).

Let's fix this by adjusting the `longest` variable before printing the
aliases.

When you type "git help" (or just "git") you are greeted with a list

"git help -av" would be more friendly and inline with what is shown

well, and commands are properly grouped.

"help -av" does not show everything "help -a" shows though. Add
external command section in "help -av" for this. While at there, add a
section for aliases as well (until now aliases have no UI, just "git

Han-Wen Nienhuys bf1a11f0a1 sideband: highlight keywords in remote sideband output
The colorization is controlled with the config setting "color.remote".

Supported keywords are "error", "warning", "hint" and "success". They
are highlighted if they appear at the start of the line, which is
common in error messages, eg.

   ERROR: commit is missing Change-Id

The Git push process itself prints lots of non-actionable messages
(eg. bandwidth statistics, object counters for different phases of the
process). This obscures actionable error messages that servers may
send back. Highlighting keywords in the sideband draws more attention
to those messages.

The background for this change is that Gerrit does server-side
processing to create or update code reviews, and actionable error
messages (eg. missing Change-Id) must be communicated back to the user
during the push. User research has shown that new users have trouble
seeing these messages.

The highlighting is done on the client rather than server side, so
servers don't have to grow capabilities to understand terminal escape
codes and terminal state. It also consistent with the current state
where Git is control of the local display (eg. prefixing messages with
"remote: ").

The highlighting can be configured using color.remote.<KEYWORD>
configuration settings. Since the keys are matched case insensitively,
we match the keywords case insensitively too.

Finally, this solution is backwards compatible: many servers already
prefix their messages with "error", and they will benefit from this
change without requiring a server update. By contrast, a server-side
solution would likely require plumbing the TERM variable through the
git protocol, so it would require changes to both server and client.

Push passes to another commands, as described in
https://public-inbox.org/git/20171129032214.GB32345@sigill.intra.peff.net/

As it gets complicated to correctly track the data length, instead transfer
the data through parent process and cut the pipe as the specified length is
reached. Do it only when CONTENT_LENGTH is set, otherwise pass the input
directly to the forked commands.

Add tests for cases:

* CONTENT_LENGTH is set, script's stdin has more data, with all combinations
of variations: fetch or push, plain or compressed body, correct or truncated
  input.

* CONTENT_LENGTH is specified to a value which does not fit into ssize_t.
