Johannes Schindelin 11aad46432 tests: optionally skip `git rebase -p` tests
The `--preserve-merges` mode of the `rebase` command is slated to be
deprecated soon, as the more powerful `--rebase-merges` mode is
available now, and the latter was designed with the express intent to
address the shortcomings of `--preserve-merges`' design (e.g. the
inability to reorder commits in an interactive rebase).

As such, we will eventually even remove the `--preserve-merges` support,
and along with it, its tests.

In preparation for this, and also to allow the Windows phase of our
automated tests to save some well-needed time when running the test
suite, this commit introduces a new prerequisite REBASE_P, which can be
forced to being unmet by setting the environment variable
`GIT_TEST_SKIP_REBASE_P` to any non-empty string.

Gregory Herrero ed5144d7eb rebase -p: fix incorrect commit message when calling `git merge`.
Since commit dd6fb0053 ("rebase -p: fix quoting when calling `git
merge`"), commit message of the merge commit being rebased is passed to
the merge command using a subshell executing 'git rev-parse --sq-quote'.

Double quotes are needed around this subshell so that, newlines are
kept for the git merge command.

Before this patch, following merge message:

    "Merge mybranch into mynewbranch

    Awesome commit."

becomes:

"Merge mybranch into mynewbranch Awesome commit."

after a rebase -p.

Jonathan Nieder a48fcd8369 tests: add missing &&
Breaks in a test assertion's && chain can potentially hide
failures from earlier commands in the chain.

Commands intended to fail should be marked with !, test_must_fail, or
test_might_fail. The examples in this patch do not require that.

Stephen Boyd 9524cf2993 fix portability issues with $ in double quotes
Using a dollar sign in double quotes isn't portable. Escape them with
a backslash or replace the double quotes with single quotes.

Junio C Hamano 5e835cac86 rebase: do not munge commit log message
Traditionally git-rebase was implemented in terms of "format-patch" piped
to "am -3", to strike balance between speed (because it avoids a rather
expensive read-tree/merge-recursive machinery most of the time) and
flexibility (the magic "-3" allows it to fall back to 3-way merge as
necessary). However, this combination has one flaw when dealing with a
nonstandard commit log message format that has more than one lines in the
first paragraph.

This teaches "git am --rebasing" to take advantage of the fact that the
mbox message "git rebase" prepares for it records the original commit
object name, to get the log message from the original commit object
instead.
