In the current code, callers are expected to fill in the
pretty_print_context, and then the pretty.c functions simply
read from it. This leaves no room for the pretty.c functions
to communicate with each other by manipulating the context
(e.g., data seen while printing the header may impact how we
print the body).
Rather than introduce a new struct to hold modifiable data,
let's just drop the const-ness of the existing context
struct.

Sometimes people would want to view the commits in parallel
histories in the order of author dates, not committer dates.

to record the author dates of each commit, and prio-queue to sort
them.

The primary invariant of sort_in_topological_order() is that a
parent commit is not emitted until all children of it are. When
traversing a forked history like this with "git log C E":
A----B----C
\
D----E
we ensure that A is emitted after all of B, C, D, and E are done, B
has to wait until C is done, and D has to wait until E is done.
In some applications, however, we would further want to control how
these child commits B, C, D and E on two parallel ancestry chains
are shown.
Most of the time, we would want to see C and B emitted together, and
then E and D, and finally A (i.e. the --topo-order output). The
"lifo" parameter of the sort_in_topological_order() function is used
to control this behaviour. We start the traversal by knowing two
commits, C and E. While keeping in mind that we also need to
inspect E later, we pick C first to inspect, and we notice and
record that B needs to be inspected. By structuring the "work to be
done" set as a LIFO stack, we ensure that B is inspected next,
before other in-flight commits we had known that we will need to
inspect, e.g. E.
When showing in --date-order, we would want to see commits ordered
by timestamps, i.e. show C, E, B and D in this order before showing
A, possibly mixing commits from two parallel histories together.
When "lifo" parameter is set to false, the function keeps the "work
to be done" set sorted in the date order to realize this semantics.
After inspecting C, we add B to the "work to be done" set, but the
next commit we inspect from the set is E which is newer than B.
The name "lifo", however, is too strongly tied to the way how the
function implements its behaviour, and does not describe what the
behaviour _means_.
Replace this field with an enum rev_sort_order, with two possible
values: REV_SORT_IN_GRAPH_ORDER and REV_SORT_BY_COMMIT_DATE, and
update the existing code. The mechanical replacement rule is:
"lifo == 0" is equivalent to "sort_order == REV_SORT_BY_COMMIT_DATE"
"lifo == 1" is equivalent to "sort_order == REV_SORT_IN_GRAPH_ORDER"

The "indegree" field in the commit object is only used while sorting
a list of commits in topological order, and wasting memory otherwise.
We would prefer to shrink the size of individual commit objects,
which we may have to hold thousands of in-core. We could eject
"indegree" field out from the commit object and represent it as a
dynamic table based on the decoration infrastructure, but the
decoration is meant for sparse annotation and is not a good match.
Instead, let's try a different approach.
- Assign an integer (commit->index) to each commit we keep in-core
(reuse the space of "indegree" field for it);
- When running the topological sort, allocate an array of integers
in bulk (called "slab"), use the commit->index as an index into
this array, and store the "indegree" information there.
This does _not_ reduce the memory footprint of a commit object, but
the commit->index can be used as the index to dynamically associate
commits with other kinds of information as needed.

* nd/fetch-depth-is-broken:
fetch: elaborate --depth action

The logmsg_reencode function will return the reencoded
commit buffer, or NULL if reencoding failed or no reencoding
was necessary. Since every caller then ends up checking for NULL
and just using the commit's original buffer, anyway, we can
be a bit more helpful and just return that buffer when we
would have returned NULL.
Since the resulting string may or may not need to be freed,
we introduce a logmsg_free, which checks whether the buffer
came from the commit object or not (callers either
implemented the same check already, or kept two separate
pointers, one to mark the buffer to be used, and one for the
to-be-freed string).
Pushing this logic into logmsg_* simplifies the callers, and
will let future patches lazily load the commit buffer in a
single place.

guessing may be involved. Make easy-to-remember --unshallow an alias

Make upload-pack recognize this special number as infinite depth. The
effect is essentially the same as before, except that upload-pack is
more efficient because it does not have to traverse to the bottom
anymore.
The chance of a user actually wanting exactly 2147483647 commits
depth, not infinite, on a repository with a history that long, is
probably too small to consider. The client can learn to add or
subtract one commit to avoid the special treatment when that actually
happens.

Gives a better DWIM behaviour for --pretty=format:%gd, "stash list", and
"log -g", depending on how the starting point ("master" vs "master@{0}" vs
"master@{now}") and date formatting options (e.g. "--date=iso") are given
on the command line.

reflog-walk: always make HEAD@{0} show indexed selectors
reflog-walk: clean up "flag" field of commit_reflog struct
log: respect date_mode_explicit with --format:%gd
t1411: add more selector index/date tests
When we show a reflog selector (e.g., via "git log -g"), we
perform some DWIM magic: while we normally show the entry's
index (e.g., HEAD@{1}), if the user has given us a date
with "--date", then we show a date-based select (e.g.,
HEAD@{yesterday}).
However, we don't want to trigger this magic if the
alternate date format we got was from the "log.date"
configuration; that is not sufficiently strong context for
us to invoke this particular magic. To fix this, commit
f4ea32f (improve reflog date/number heuristic, 2009-09-24)
introduced a "date_mode_explicit" flag in rev_info. This
flag is set only when we see a "--date" option on the
command line, and we a vanilla date to the reflog code if
the date was not explicit.
Later, commit 8f8f547 (Introduce new pretty formats %g[sdD]
for reflog information, 2009-10-19) added another way to
show selectors, and it did not respect the date_mode_explicit
flag from f4ea32f.
This patch propagates the date_mode_explicit flag to the
pretty-print code, which can then use it to pass the
appropriate date field to the reflog code. This brings the
behavior of "%gd" in line with the other formats, and means
that its output is independent of any user configuration.

Speed up prepare_revision_walk() by adding commits without sorting
to the commit_list and at the end sort the list in one go. Thanks
to mergesort() working behind the scenes, this is a lot faster for
large numbers of commits than the current insert sort.
Also introduce and use commit_list_reverse(), to keep the ordering
of commits sharing the same commit date unchanged. That's because
commit_list_insert_by_date() sorts commits with descending date,
but adds later entries with the same date entries last, while
commit_list_insert() always inserts entries at the top. The
following commit_list_sort_by_date() keeps the order of entries
sharing the same date.
Jeff's test case, in a repo with lots of refs, was to run:
# make a new commit on top of HEAD, but not yet referenced
sha1=`git commit-tree HEAD^{tree} -p HEAD </dev/null`
# now do the same "connected" test that receive-pack would do

The lines of GPG detached signature are placed in a new multi-line header
field, instead of tucking the signature block at the end of the commit log
message text (similar to how signed tag is done), for multiple reasons:
- The signature won't clutter output from "git log" and friends if it is
in the extra header. If we place it at the end of the log message, we
would need to teach "git log" and friends to strip the signature block
with an option.
- Teaching new versions of "git log" and "gitk" to optionally verify and
show signatures is cleaner if we structurally know where the signature
block is (instead of scanning in the commit log message).
- The signature needs to be stripped upon various commit rewriting
operations, e.g. rebase, filter-branch, etc. They all already ignore
unknown headers, but if we place signature in the log message, all of
these tools (and third-party tools) also need to learn how a signature
block would look like.
- When we added the optional encoding header, all the tools (both in tree
and third-party) that acts on the raw commit object should have been
fixed to ignore headers they do not understand, so it is not like that
new header would be more likely to break than extra text in the commit.
A commit made with the above sample sequence would look like this:
$ git cat-file commit HEAD

Now MERGE_HEAD records the tag objects without peeling, we could record
the result of manual conflict resolution via "git commit" without losing
the tag information. Introduce a new "mergetag" multi-line header field to
the commit object, and use it to store the entire contents of each signed
tag merged.
A commit header that has a multi-line payload begins with the header tag
(e.g. "mergetag" in this case), SP, the first line of payload, LF, and all
the remaining lines have a SP inserted at the beginning.
In hindsight, it would have been better to make "merge --continue" as the
way to continue from such an interrupted merge, not "commit", but this is
a backward compatibility baggage we would need to carry around for now.

The merge-recursive code uses the commit->util field directly to annotate
the commit objects given from the command line, i.e. the remote heads to
be merged, with a single string to be used to describe it in its trace
messages and conflict markers.
Correct this short-signtedness by redefining the field to be a pointer to
a structure "struct merge_remote_desc" that later enhancements can add
more information. Store the original objects we were told to merge in a
field "obj" in this struct, so that we can recover the tag we were told to
merge.

This means that "git am" cannot trust header folding as a
sign from format-patch that newlines should be preserved.
Instead, format-patch needs to signal more explicitly that
the newlines are significant. This patch does so by
rfc2047-encoding the newlines in the subject line. No
changes are needed on the "git am" end; it already decodes

We have a pretty_print_context representing the parameters
for a pretty-print session, but we did not use it uniformly.
As a result, functions kept growing more and more arguments.
Let's clean this up in a few ways:
1. All pretty-print pp_* functions now take a context.
This lets us reduce the number of arguments to these
functions, since we were just passing around the
context values separately.
2. The context argument now has a cmit_fmt field, which
was passed around separately. That's one less argument

3. The context argument always comes first, which makes
calling a little more uniform.
This drops lines from some callers, and adds lines in a few
places (because we need an extra line to set the context's
fmt field). Overall, we don't save many lines, but the lines
that are there are a lot simpler and more readable.

In a struct definitions, unlike functions, the prevailing style is for
the opening brace to go on the same line as the struct name, like so:
struct foo {
int bar;
char *baz;
};
Indeed, grepping for 'struct [a-z_]* {$' yields about 5 times as many
matches as 'struct [a-z_]*$'.

Without this patch at least IBM VisualAge C 5.0 (I have 5.0.2) on AIX
5.1 fails to compile git.
enum style is inconsistent already, with some enums declared on one
line, some over 3 lines with the enum values all on the middle line,
sometimes with 1 enum value per line... and independently of that the
trailing comma is sometimes present and other times absent, often
mixing with/without trailing comma styles in a single file, and
sometimes in consecutive enum declarations.
Clearly, omitting the comma is the more portable style, and this patch
changes all enum declarations to use the portable omitted dangling
comma style consistently.

Until now, this has been part of the commit-tree builtin.
However, it is already used by other builtins (like commit,
merge, and notes), and it would be useful to access it from
library code.
The check_valid helper has to come along, too, but is given
a more library-ish name of "assert_sha1_type".
Otherwise, the code is unchanged. There are still a few
rough edges for a library function, like printing the utf8
warning to stderr, but we can address those if and when they
come up as inappropriate.

Giving "Notes" information in the default output format of "log" and
"show" is a sensible progress (the user has asked for it by having the
notes), but for some commands (e.g. "format-patch") spewing notes into the
formatted commit log message without being asked is too aggressive.
Enable notes output only for "log", "show", "whatchanged" by default and
only when the user didn't ask any specific --pretty/--format from the
command line; users can explicitly override this default with --show-notes
and --no-notes option.
Parts of tests are taken from Jeff King's fix.

This change is being offered as a refactoring to make later
commits in the smart HTTP series easier.
By changing the enabled capabilities to be formatted in a strbuf
it is easier to add a new capability to the set of supported
capabilities.
By formatting the want portion of the request into a strbuf and
writing it as a whole block we can later decide to hold onto
the req_buf (instead of releasing it) to recycle in stateless
communications.

Add three new --pretty=format escapes:
%gD long reflog descriptor (e.g. refs/stash@{0})
%gd short reflog descriptor (e.g. stash@{0})
%gs reflog message
This is achieved by passing down the reflog info, if any, inside the
pretty_print_context struct.
We use the newly refactored get_reflog_selector(), and give it some
extra functionality to extract a shortened ref. The shortening is
cached inside the commit_reflogs struct; the only allocation of it
happens in read_complete_reflog(), where it is initialised to 0. Also
add another helper get_reflog_message() for the message extraction.
Note that the --format="%h %gD: %gs" tests may not work in real
repositories, as the --pretty formatter doesn't know to leave away the
": " on the last commit in an incomplete (because git-gc removed the
old part) reflog. This equivalence is nevertheless the main goal of
this patch.
Thanks to Jeff King for reviews, the %gd testcase and documentation.

pretty_print_commit() has a bunch of rarely-used arguments, and
introducing more of them requires yet another update of all the call
sites. Refactor most of them into a struct to make future extensions
easier.
The ones that stay "plain" arguments were chosen on the grounds that
all callers put real arguments there, whereas some callers have 0/NULL
for all arguments that were factored into the struct.
We declare the struct 'const' to ensure none of the callers are bitten
by the changed (no longer call-by-value) semantics.

This mechanism is used in "read_sha1_file". sha1 passed to this

the sha1 that has been read in the ref.

This patch adds the "unparse_commit" function that returns a commit
into an unparsed state by freeing its data and resetting its fields
to 0.
Its parents are recursively unparsed too, because they might have
been changed. But its tree is not unparsed as it should not have
been modifed.
Note that as the "flags" and "used" fields may be used even if the
object is not parsed, we have to reset them anyway.

Currently git-blame outputs text from the commit messages
(e.g. the author name and the summary string) as-is, without
even providing any information about the encoding used for
the data. It makes interpreting the data in multilingual
environment very difficult.
This commit changes the blame implementation to recode the
messages using the rules used by other commands like git-log.
Namely, the target encoding can be specified through the
i18n.commitEncoding or i18n.logOutputEncoding options, or
directly on the command line using the --encoding parameter.
Converting the encoding before output seems to be more
friendly to the porcelain tools than simply providing the
value of the encoding header, and does not require changing
the output format.
If anybody needs the old behavior, it is possible to
achieve it by specifying --encoding=none.
