Update the logic to compute the display width needed for utf8
strings and allow us to more easily maintain the tables used in
that logic.
We may want to let the users choose if codepoints with ambiguous
widths are treated as a double or single width in a follow-up patch.
* tb/unicode-6.3-zero-width:
utf8: make it easier to auto-update git_wcwidth()
utf8.c: use a table for double_width
The function git_wcwidth() returns for a given unicode code point the
width on the display:
-1 for control characters,
0 for combining or other non-visible code points
1 for e.g. ASCII
2 for double-width code points.
This table had been originally been extracted for one Unicode
version, probably 3.2.
We now use two tables these days, one for zero-width and another for
double-width. Make it easier to update these tables to a later
version of Unicode by factoring out the table from utf8.c into
unicode_width.h and add the script update_unicode.sh to update the
table based on the latest Unicode specification files.

toposort: rename "lifo" field
Traditionally we used a singly linked list of commits to hold a set
of in-flight commits while traversing history. The most typical use
of the list is to add commits that are newly discovered to it, keep
the list sorted by commit timestamp, pick up the newest one from the
list, and keep digging. The cost of keeping the singly linked list
sorted is nontrivial, and this typical use pattern better matches a
priority queue.
Introduce a prio-queue structure, that can be used either as a LIFO
stack, or a priority queue. This will be used in the next patch to
hold in-flight commits during sort-in-topological-order.
Tests and the idea to make it usable for any "void *" pointers to
"things" are by Jeff King. Bugs are mine.

This is nice except when you run make another time setting a
different PYTHON_PATH, because, as the python scripts have already
been created, make finds nothing to do.
The goal of this patch is to detect when the PYTHON_PATH changes and
to create the python scripts again when this happens. To do that we
use the same trick that is done to track other variables like prefix,

If you access repositories over smart-http using http
authentication, then it can be annoying to have git ask you
for your password repeatedly. We cache credentials in
memory, of course, but git is composed of many small
programs. Having to input your password for each one can be
frustrating.

passwords in memory for a short period of time.

There are a few places in git that need to get a username
and password credential from the user; the most notable one
is HTTP authentication for smart-http pushing.
Right now the only choices for providing credentials are to
put them plaintext into your ~/.netrc, or to have git prompt
you (either on the terminal or via an askpass program). The
former is not very secure, and the latter is not very
convenient.
Unfortunately, there is no "always best" solution for
password management. The details will depend on the tradeoff
you want between security and convenience, as well as how
git can integrate with other security systems (e.g., many
operating systems provide a keychain or password wallet for
single sign-on).
This patch provides an abstract notion of credentials as a
data item, and provides three basic operations:
- fill (i.e., acquire from external storage or from the
user)
- approve (mark a credential as "working" for further
storage)
- reject (mark a credential as "not working", so it can
be removed from storage)
These operations can be backed by external helper processes
that interact with system- or user-specific secure storage.

Add a git-sh-i18n--envsubst program which is a stripped-down version
of the GNU envsubst(1) program that comes with GNU gettext for use in
the eval_gettext() fallback.
We need a C helper program because implementing eval_gettext() purely
in shell turned out to be unworkable. Digging through the Git mailing
list archives will reveal two shell implementations of eval_gettext
that are almost good enough, but fail on an edge case which is tested
for in the tests which are part of this patch.
These are the modifications I made to envsubst.c as I turned it into
sh-i18n--envsubst.c:
* Added our git-compat-util.h header for xrealloc() and friends.
* Removed inclusion of gettext-specific headers.
* Removed most of main() and replaced it with my own. The modified
version only does option parsing for --variables. That's all it
needs.

When setup_work_tree() is called, it moves cwd to $GIT_WORK_TREE and
makes internal copy of $GIT_WORK_TREE absolute. The environt variable,

Instead of making $GIT_WORK_TREE absolute too, we just say "." and let

Provide macros to generate a type-specific treap implementation and
various functions to operate on it. It uses obj_pool.h to store memory
nodes in a treap. Previously committed nodes are never removed from
the pool; after any *_commit operation, it is assumed (correctly, in
the case of svn-fast-export) that someone else must care about them.
Treaps provide a memory-efficient binary search tree structure.
Insertion/deletion/search are about as about as fast in the average
case as red-black trees and the chances of worst-case behavior are
vanishingly small, thanks to (pseudo-)randomness. The bad worst-case
behavior is a small price to pay, given that treaps are much simpler
to implement.

Add a memory pool library implemented using C macros. The
obj_pool_gen() macro creates a type-specific memory pool.
The memory pool library is distinguished from the existing specialized
allocators in alloc.c by using a contiguous block for all allocations.
This means that on one hand, long-lived pointers have to be written as
offsets, since the base address changes as the pool grows, but on the
other hand, the entire pool can be easily written to the file system.
This could allow the memory pool to persist between runs of an
application.
For the svn importer, such a facility is useful because each svn
revision can copy trees and files from any previous revision. The
relevant information for all revisions has to persist somehow to
support incremental runs.

Currently the remote helper infrastructure is only used by the curl
helper, which does not give a good impression of how remote helpers
can be used to interact with foreign repositories. Since implementing
such a helper is non-trivial it would be good to have at least one
easy-to-follow example demonstrating how to implement a helper that
interacts with a foreign vcs using fast-import/fast-export.
The testgit helper can be used to interact with remote git
repositories by prefixing the url with "testgit::".

Use the gcc -MMD -MP -MF options to generate dependency rules as
a byproduct when building .o files if the
COMPUTE_HEADER_DEPENDENCIES variable is defined. That variable
is left undefined by default for now.
As each object file is built, write a makefile fragment
containing its dependencies in the deps/ subdirectory of its
containing directory. The deps/ directories should be generated
if they are missing at the start of each build. So let each
object file depend on $(missing_dep_dirs), which lists only the
directories of this kind that are missing to avoid needlessly
regenerating files when the directories' timestamps change.
gcc learned the -MMD -MP -MF options in version 3.0, so most gcc
users should have them by now.
The dependencies this option computes are more specific than the
rough estimates hard-coded in the Makefile, greatly speeding up
rebuilds when only a little-used header file has changed.

The scripts automatically set environment variables to run out

Our gitignore doesn't use a preceding "/" to root its
patterns in the top of the repository. This means that if
you add a file or directory called "git" (for example)
inside a subdirectory, it will be erroneously ignored.
This patch was done mechanically with "s/^[^*]/\/&/" with
one exception: instead of ignoring gitk-wish, we should
gitk-git/gitk-wish (arguably, this should be done in
gitk-git/.gitignore, but because that is a subtree merge
from elsewhere, this is easier).

Windows: Fix signal numbers
If a piece of code wanted to do some cleanup before exiting
(e.g., cleaning up a lockfile or a tempfile), our usual
strategy was to install a signal handler that did something
like this:
do_cleanup(); /* actual work */
signal(signo, SIG_DFL); /* restore previous behavior */
raise(signo); /* deliver signal, killing ourselves */
For a single handler, this works fine. However, if we want
to clean up two _different_ things, we run into a problem.
The most recently installed handler will run, but when it
removes itself as a handler, it doesn't put back the first
handler.
This patch introduces sigchain, a tiny library for handling
a stack of signal handlers. You sigchain_push each handler,
and use sigchain_pop to restore whoever was before you in
the stack.

normalize_absolute_path removes several oddities form absolute paths,
giving nice clean paths like "/dir/sub1/sub2". Also add a test case
for this utility, based on a new test program (in the style of test-sha1).

The top-level Makefile now creates a GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS file
which stores any options selected by the make process that
may be of use to further parts of the build process.
Specifically, we store the SHELL_PATH so that it can be used
by tests to construct shell scripts on the fly.
The format of the GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS file is Bourne shell,
and it is sourced by test-lib.sh; all tests can rely on just
having $SHELL_PATH correctly set in the environment.
The GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS file is written every time the
toplevel 'make' is invoked. Since the only users right now
are the test scripts, there's no drawback to updating its
timestamp. If something build-related depends on this, we
can do a trick similar to the one used by GIT-CFLAGS.

Some entries in .gitignore are obselete. These should be cleaned up
just for the sake of general tidiness and so that any developers who
have a working tree that was moved forward without a clean know that
they have old stuff in their work tree.

The convention for helper scripts has been
git-$TOOL--$HELPER. Since this is a "browse" helper for the
"help" tool, git-help--browse is a more sensible name.

This program dumps (parts of) a git repository in the format that
fast-import understands.
For clarity's sake, it does not use the 'inline' method of specifying
blobs in the commits, but builds the blobs before building the commits.
Since signed tags' signatures will not necessarily be valid (think
transformations after the export, or excluding revisions, changing
the history), there are 4 modes to handle them: abort (default),
ignore, warn and strip. The latter just turns the tags into
unsigned ones.

This makes git commit a builtin and moves git-commit.sh to
contrib/examples. This also removes the git-runstatus
helper, which was mostly just a git-status.sh implementation detail.

The current makefile supports ctags but not cscope. Some people prefer
cscope (I do), so this patch adds a cscope target.
I've also added cscope* to the .gitignore file. For some reason tags
and TAGS weren't in there either so I've added them too.

convert-objects was needed to convert from an old-style repository,
which hashed the compressed contents and used a different date format.
Such repositories are presumably no longer common and, if such
conversions are necessary, should be done by writing a frontend for
git-fast-import.
Linus, the original author, is OK with moving it to contrib.

When my boss has something to show me and I have to update, for some

command refuses to work in such a case.
I wrote this little script to save the changes I made, perform the
update, and then come back to where I was, but on top of the updated
commit.
This is how you would use the script:
$ git stash
$ git pull
$ git stash apply

In the kernel we have a rule for *.c -> *.s files exactly because
it's nice to be able to easily say "ok, what does that generate".
Here's a patch to add such a rule to git too, in case anybody is
interested. It makes it much simpler to just do
make sha1_file.s
and look at the compiler-generated output that way, rather than having to
fire up gdb on the resulting binary.
(Add -fverbose-asm or something if you want to, it can make the result
even more readable)

This command can be used to initialize, update and inspect submodules. It
uses a .gitmodules file, readable by git-config, in the top level directory
of the 'superproject' to specify a mapping between submodule paths and
repository url.
Example .gitmodules layout:
[module "git"]
url = git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git
With this entry in .gitmodules (and a commit reference in the index entry for
the path "git"), the command 'git submodule init' will clone the repository
at kernel.org into the directory "git".
Known issues
============
There is currently no way to override the url found in the .gitmodules file,
except by manually creating the subproject repository. The place to fix this
in the script has a rather long comment about a possible plan.
Funny paths will be quoted in the output from git-ls-files, but git-submodule
does not attempt to unquote (or even detect the presence of) such paths.

I believe noone uses git-applymbox, and noone definitely should, since it
is supposed to be completely superseded and everything by its younger
cousin git-am. The only known person in the universe to use it was Linus
and he declared some time ago that he will try to use git-am instead in his
famous dotest script.
The trouble is that git-applymbox existence creates confusing UI. I'm a bit
like a recycled newbie to the git porcelain and *I* was confused by
git-applymbox primitiveness until I've realized a while later that I'm of
course using the wrong command.
