Knowing the original names (hashes) of commits can sometimes enable
post-filtering that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. In
particular, the desire to rewrite commit messages which refer to other
prior commits (on top of whatever other filtering is being done) is
very difficult without knowing the original names of each commit.
In addition, knowing the original names (hashes) of blobs can allow
filtering by blob-id without requiring re-hashing the content of the
blob, and is thus useful as a small optimization.
Once we add original ids for both commits and blobs, we may as well
add them for tags too for completeness. Perhaps someone will have a
use for them.
This commit teaches a new --show-original-ids option to fast-export
which will make it add a 'original-oid <hash>' line to blob, commits,
and tags. It also teaches fast-import to parse (and ignore) such
lines.

git filter-branch has a nifty feature allowing you to rewrite, e.g. just
the last 8 commits of a linear history
git filter-branch $OPTIONS HEAD~8..HEAD
If you try the same with git fast-export, you instead get a history of
only 8 commits, with HEAD~7 being rewritten into a root commit. There
are two alternatives:
1) Don't use the negative revision specification, and when you're
filtering the output to make modifications to the last 8 commits,
just be careful to not modify any earlier commits somehow.
2) First run 'git fast-export --export-marks=somefile HEAD~8', then
run 'git fast-export --import-marks=somefile HEAD~8..HEAD'.
Both are more error prone than I'd like (the first for obvious reasons;
with the second option I have sometimes accidentally included too many
revisions in the first command and then found that the corresponding
extra revisions were not exported by the second command and thus were
not modified as I expected). Also, both are poor from a performance
perspective.
Add a new --reference-excluded-parents option which will cause
fast-export to refer to commits outside the specified rev-list-args
range by their sha1sum. Such a stream will only be useful in a
repository which already contains the necessary commits (much like the
restriction imposed when using --no-data).
Note from Peff:
I think we might be able to do a little more optimization here. If
we're exporting HEAD^..HEAD and there's an object in HEAD^ which is
unchanged in HEAD, I think we'd still print it (because it would not
be marked SHOWN), but we could omit it (by walking the tree of the
boundary commits and marking them shown). I don't think it's a
blocker for what you're doing here, but just a possible future
optimization.

If file paths are specified to fast-export and a ref points to a commit
that does not touch any of the relevant paths, then that ref would
sometimes fail to be exported. (This depends on whether any ancestors
of the commit which do touch the relevant paths would be exported with
that same ref name or a different ref name.) To avoid this problem,
put *all* specified refs into extra_refs to start, and then as we export
each commit, remove the refname used in the 'commit $REFNAME' directive
from extra_refs. Then, in handle_tags_and_duplicates() we know which
refs actually do need a manual reset directive in order to be included.
This means that we do need some special handling for excluded refs; e.g.
if someone runs
git fast-export ^master master
then they've asked for master to be exported, but they have also asked
for the commit which master points to and all of its history to be
excluded. That logically means ref deletion. Previously, such refs
were just silently omitted from being exported despite having been
explicitly requested for export.

If file paths are specified to fast-export and multiple refs point to a
commit that does not touch any of the relevant file paths, then
fast-export can hit problems. fast-export has a list of additional refs
that it needs to explicitly set after exporting all blobs and commits,
and when it tries to get_object_mark() on the relevant commit, it can
get a mark of 0, i.e. "not found", because the commit in question did
not touch the relevant paths and thus was not exported. Trying to
import a stream with a mark corresponding to an unexported object will
cause fast-import to crash.
Avoid this problem by taking the commit the ref points to and finding an
ancestor of it that was exported, and make the ref point to that commit
instead.

If --tag-of-filtered-object=rewrite is specified along with a set of
paths to limit what is exported, then any tags pointing to old commits
that do not contain any of those specified paths cause problems. Since
the old tagged commit is not exported, fast-export attempts to rewrite
such tags to an ancestor commit which was exported. If no such commit
exists, then fast-export currently die()s. Five years after the tag
rewriting logic was added to fast-export (see commit 2d8ad46919,
"fast-export: Add a --tag-of-filtered-object option for newly dangling
tags", 2009-06-25), fast-import gained the ability to delete refs (see
commit 4ee1b225b9, "fast-import: add support to delete refs",
2014-04-20), so now we do have a valid option to rewrite the tag to.
Delete these tags instead of dying.

The initial fetch during a clone doesn't transfer refs matching
additional fetch refspecs given on the command line as configuration
variables, e.g. '-c remote.origin.fetch=<refspec>'. This contradicts
the documentation stating that configuration variables specified via
'git clone -c <key>=<value> ...' "take effect immediately after the
repository is initialized, but before the remote history is fetched"
and the given example specifically mentions "adding additional fetch
refspecs to the origin remote". Furthermore, one-shot configuration
variables specified via 'git -c <key>=<value> clone ...', though not
written to the newly created repository's config file, live during the
lifetime of the 'clone' command, including the initial fetch. All
this implies that any fetch refspecs specified this way should already
be taken into account during the initial fetch.
The reason for this is that the initial fetch is not a fully fledged
'git fetch' but a bunch of direct calls into the fetch/transport
machinery with clone's own refs-to-refspec matching logic, which
bypasses parts of 'git fetch' processing configured fetch refspecs.
This logic only considers a single default refspec, potentially
influenced by options like '--single-branch' and '--mirror'. The
configured refspecs are, however, already read and parsed properly
when clone calls remote.c:remote_get(), but it never looks at the
parsed refspecs in the resulting 'struct remote'.
Modify clone to take the remote's configured fetch refspecs into
account to retrieve all matching refs during the initial fetch. Note
that we have to explicitly add the default fetch refspec to the
remote's refspecs, because at that point the remote only includes the
fetch refspecs specified on the command line.
Add tests to check that refspecs given both via 'git clone -c ...' and
'git -c ... clone' retrieve all refs matching either the default or
the additional refspecs, and that it works even when the user
specifies an alternative remote name via '--origin=<name>'.

cmd_clone() declares two strbufs 'key' and 'value' on the same line,
suggesting that they are used to contruct a config variable's name and
value. However, this is not the case: 'key' is used to construct the
names of multiple config variables, while 'value' is never used as a
value for any of those config variables, or for any other config
variable for that matter, but only to contruct the default fetch
refspec.
Let's rename 'value' to 'default_refspec' to make the intent clearer.

It is a good idea to error out early upon seeing, say, `-Cbad`, rather
than starting the rebase only to have the `--am` backend complain later.
Let's do this.
The only options accepting parameters which we pass through to `git am`
(which may, or may not, forward them to `git apply`) are `-C` and
`--whitespace`. The other options we pass through do not accept
parameters, so we do not have to validate them here.

Currently, we parse the options intended for `git am` as if we wanted to
handle them in `git rebase`, and then reconstruct them painstakingly to
define the `git_am_opt` variable.
However, there is a much better way (that I was unaware of, at the time
when I mentored Pratik to implement these options): OPT_PASSTHRU_ARGV.
It is intended for exactly this use case, where command-line options
want to be parsed into a separate `argv_array`.
Let's use this feature.
Incidentally, this also allows us to address a bug discovered by Phillip
Wood, where the built-in rebase failed to understand that the `-C`
option takes an optional argument.

Change an example push added in b55e677522 ("push: introduce new
push.default mode "simple"", 2012-04-24) to always mean the same thing
whether the current setting happens to be "simple" or not.
This error is only emitted under "simple", but message is explaining
to the user that they can get two sorts of different behaviors by
these two invocations.
Let's use "git push <remote> HEAD" which always means push the current
branch name to that remote, instead of "git push <remote>
<current-branch-name>" which will do that under "simple", but is not
guaranteed to do under "upstream".

When checkout dwim is added in [1], it is restricted to only dwim when
certain conditions are met and fall back to default checkout behavior
otherwise. It turns out falling back could be confusing. One of the
conditions to turn
git checkout frotz
to
git checkout -b frotz origin/frotz
is that frotz must not exist as a file. But when the user comes to
expect "git checkout frotz" to create the branch "frotz" and there
happens to be a file named "frotz", git's silently reverting "frotz"
file content is not helping. This is reported in Git mailing list [2]
and even used as an example of "Git is bad" elsewhere [3].
We normally try to do the right thing, but when there are multiple
"right things" to do, it's best to leave it to the user to decide.
Check this case, ask the user to to disambiguate:
- "git checkout -- foo" will check out path "foo"
- "git checkout foo --" will dwim and create branch "foo" [4]
For users who do not want dwim, use --no-guess. It's useless in this
particular case because "git checkout --no-guess foo --" will just
fail. But it could be used by scripts.

codepath learned the same optimization as "diff-files" has to run
lstat(2) in parallel to find which paths have been updated in the

Commit 43662b23ab (format-patch: keep cover-letter diffstat wrapped in
72 columns - 2018-01-24) uncondtionally sets stat width to 72 when
generating diffstat for the cover letter, ignoring --stat from command
line. But it should only do so when stat width is still default
(i.e. stat_width == 0).
In order to fix this, we should only set stat_width if stat_width is
zero. But it will never be. Commit 071dd0ba43 (format-patch: reduce
patch diffstat width to 72 - 2018-02-01) makes sure that default stat
width will be 72 (ignoring $COLUMNS, but could still be overriden by
--stat). So all we need to do here is drop the assignment.

When we converted a `git checkout -q $onto^0` call to use
`reset_head()`, we inadvertently incurred a change from a twoway_merge
to a oneway_merge, as if we wanted a `git reset --hard` instead.
This has performance ramifications under certain, though, as the
oneway_merge needs to lstat() every single index entry whereas
twoway_merge does not.
So let's go back to the old behavior.

Our handling of alternate object directories is needlessly different
from the main object directory. As a result, many places in the code
basically look like this:
do_something(r->objects->objdir);
for (odb = r->objects->alt_odb_list; odb; odb = odb->next)
do_something(odb->path);
That gets annoying when do_something() is non-trivial, and we've
resorted to gross hacks like creating fake alternates (see
find_short_object_filename()).
Instead, let's give each raw_object_store a unified list of
object_directory structs. The first will be the main store, and
everything after is an alternate. Very few callers even care about the
distinction, and can just loop over the whole list (and those who care
can just treat the first element differently).
A few observations:
- we don't need r->objects->objectdir anymore, and can just
mechanically convert that to r->objects->odb->path
- object_directory's path field needs to become a real pointer rather
than a FLEX_ARRAY, in order to fill it with expand_base_dir()
- we'll call prepare_alt_odb() earlier in many functions (i.e.,
outside of the loop). This may result in us calling it even when our
function would be satisfied looking only at the main odb.
But this doesn't matter in practice. It's not a very expensive
operation in the first place, and in the majority of cases it will
be a noop. We call it already (and cache its results) in
prepare_packed_git(), and we'll generally check packs before loose
objects. So essentially every program is going to call it
immediately once per program.
Arguably we should just prepare_alt_odb() immediately upon setting
up the repository's object directory, which would save us sprinkling
calls throughout the code base (and forgetting to do so has been a
source of subtle bugs in the past). But I've stopped short of that
here, since there are already a lot of other moving parts in this
patch.
- Most call sites just get shorter. The check_and_freshen() functions
are an exception, because they have entry points to handle local and
nonlocal directories separately.

The run-command API makes no promises about what is left in a struct
child_process after a command finishes, and it's not safe to simply
reuse it again for a similar command. In particular:
- if you use child->args or child->env_array, they are cleared after
finish_command()
- likewise, start_command() may point child->argv at child->args->argv;
reusing that would lead to accessing freed memory
- the in/out/err may hold pipe descriptors from the previous run
These two calls are _probably_ OK because they do not use any of those
features. But it's only by chance, and may break in the future; let's
reinitialize our struct for each program we run.

The scripted version of the rebase used to execute `git reset --hard`
when skipping or aborting. When we ported this to C, we did update the
worktree and some reflogs, but we failed to imitate `git reset --hard`'s
behavior regarding files in .git/ such as MERGE_HEAD.
Let's address this oversight.

When printing variables which contain a size, today "unsigned long"
is used at many places.
In order to be able to change the type from "unsigned long" into size_t
some day in the future, we need to have a way to print 64 bit variables
on a system that has "unsigned long" defined to be 32 bit, like Win64.
Upcast all those variables into uintmax_t before they are printed.
This is to prepare for a bigger change, when "unsigned long"
will be converted into size_t for variables which may be > 4Gib.

This case is more interesting than other boring "remove the_repo"
commits because while we need access to the object database, we cannot
simply use r->index because unpack-trees.c can operate on a temporary
index, not $GIT_DIR/index. Ideally we should be able to pass an object
database to lookup_tree() but that ship has sailed.

Note that the_hash_algo stays, even if we can easily replace it with
repo->hash_algo. My reason is I still believe tying hash_algo to a
struct repository is a wrong move. But if I'm wrong, we can always go
for another round of conversion.

Since we're going to pass 'struct repository *' around most of the
time instead of 'struct index_state *' because most sequencer.c
operations need more than just the index, the_repository is replaced
as well in the functions that now take 'struct repository
*'. the_repository is still present in this file, but total clean up
will be done later. It's not the main focus of this patch.

and give translators almost full phrases. describe_object() is updated
so that it can be called from printf() twice.
While at there, remove \n from the strings to reduce a bit of work

Introduce optname() that does the early half of original opterror() to
come up with the name of the option reported back to the user, and use
it to kill opterror(). The callers of opterror() now directly call
error() using the string returned by opterror() instead.
There are a few issues with opterror()
- it tries to assemble an English sentence from pieces. This is not
great for translators because we give them pieces instead of a full
sentence.
- It's a wrapper around error() and needs some hack to let the
compiler know it always returns -1.
- Since it takes a string instead of printf format, one call site has
to assemble the string manually before passing to it.
Using error() directly solves the second and third problems.
It kind helps the first problem as well because "%s does foo" does
give a translator a full sentence in a sense and let them reorder if
needed. But it has limitations, if the subject part has to change
based on the rest of the sentence, that language is screwed. This is
also why I try to avoid calling optname() when 'flags' is known in
advance.
Mark of these strings for translation as well while at there.

translation, but only use translated strings in places we know we will
output translated strings.

When we converted a `git reset --hard` call in the original Unix shell
script to built-in code, we asked to reset the worktree and the index
and explicitly *not* to detach the HEAD. By mistake, though, we still
did. Let's fix this.

A git push process runs several processes during its run, but one
includes git send-pack which calls git pack-objects and passes
the known have/wants into stdin using object ids. However, the
default setting for core.warnAmbiguousRefs requires git pack-objects
to check for ref names matching the ref_rev_parse_rules array in
refs.c. This means that every object is triggering at least six
"file exists?" queries. When there are a lot of refs, this can
add up significantly! I observed a simple push spending three
seconds checking these paths.
The fix here is similar to 4c30d50 "rev-list: disable object/refname
ambiguity check with --stdin". While the get_object_list() method
reads the objects from stdin, turn warn_on_object_refname_ambiguity
flag (which is usually true) to false. Just for code hygiene, save
away the original at the beginning and restore it once we are done.

We usually just forward the --verify-signatures option along to
git-merge, and trust it to do the right thing. However, when we are on
an unborn branch (i.e., there is no HEAD yet), we handle this case
ourselves without even calling git-merge. And in this code path, we do
not respect the verification option at all.
It may be more maintainable in the long run to call git-merge for the
unborn case. That would fix this bug, as well as prevent similar ones in
the future. But unfortunately it's not easy to do. As t5520.3
demonstrates, there are some special cases that git-merge does not
handle, like "git pull .. master:master" (by the time git-merge is
invoked, we've overwritten the unborn HEAD).
So for now let's just teach git-pull to handle this feature.

When git-merge sees that we are on an unborn branch (i.e., there is no
HEAD), it follows a totally separate code path than the usual merge
logic. This code path does not know about verify_signatures, and so we
fail to notice bad or missing signatures.
This has been broken since --verify-signatures was added in efed002249
(merge/pull: verify GPG signatures of commits being merged, 2013-03-31).
In an ideal world, we'd unify the flow for this case with the regular
merge logic, which would fix this bug and avoid introducing similar
ones. But because the unborn case is so different, it would be a burden
on the rest of the function to continually handle the missing HEAD. So
let's just port the verification check to this special case.

The logic to implement "merge --verify-signatures" is inline in
cmd_merge(), but this site misses some cases. Let's extract the logic
into a function so we can call it from more places.
We'll move it to commit.[ch], since one of the callers (git-pull) is
outside our source file. This function isn't all that general (after
all, its main function is to exit the program) but it's not worth trying
to fix that. The heavy lifting is done by check_commit_signature(), and
our purpose here is just sharing the die() logic. We'll mark it with a
comment to make that clear.

Operations on promisor objects make sense in the context of only a
small subset of the commands that internally use the revisions
machinery, but the "--exclude-promisor-objects" option were taken
and led to nonsense results by commands like "log", to which it
didn't make much sense. This has been corrected.

Some codepaths failed to form a proper URL when .gitmodules record
the URL to a submodule repository as relative to the repository of
superproject, which has been corrected.

The logic to determine the archive type "git archive" uses did not
correctly kick in for "git archive --remote", which has been

When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option
struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback
which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with
PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not
defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier
patches in this series show).
Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with
-Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset"
parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered
with PARSE_OPT_NOARG).
But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its
callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence
the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls
in the future.
We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that
they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern,
we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't
as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from
BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that
these should never be seen).
Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers
-Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers
use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable).

The options callback for --batch and --batch-check detects when the two
mutually incompatible options are used. But it simply returns an error
code to parse-options, meaning the program will quit without any kind of
message to the user.
Instead, let's use error() to print something and return -1. Note that
this flips the error return from 1 to -1, but negative values are more
idiomatic here (and parse-options treats them the same).

We do not allow "--no-message" to work now, as the option callback
returns "-1" when it sees a NULL arg. However, that will cause
parse-options to exit(129) without printing anything further, leaving
the user confused about what happened.
Instead, let's explicitly mark it as PARSE_OPT_NONEG, which will give a
useful error message (and print the usual -h output).
In theory this could be used to override an earlier "-m", but it's not
clear how it would interact with other message options (e.g., would it
also clear data read for "-F"?). Since it's already disabled and nobody
is asking for it, let's punt on that and just improve the error message.

Running "git show-branch --no-reflog" will behave as if "--reflog" was
given with no options, which makes no sense.
In theory this option might be used to cancel an earlier "--reflog"
option, but the semantics are not clear. Let's punt on it and just
disallow the broken option.

We have separate parse-options entries for "numbered" and "no-numbered",
which means that we accept "--no-no-numbered". It does not behave
sensibly, though (it ignores the "unset" flag and acts like
"--no-numbered").
We could fix that, but obviously this is silly and unintentional. Let's
just disallow it.

If you run "git status --no-find-renames", it will behave the same as
"--find-renames", because we ignore the "unset" parameter (we see a NULL
"arg", but since the score argument is optional, we just think that the
user did not provide a score).
We already have a separate "--no-renames" to disable renames, so there's
not much point in supporting "--no-find-renames". Let's just flag it as
an error.

Running "git pack-objects --no-index-version" will segfault, since the
callback is not prepared to handle the "unset" flag.
In theory this might be used to counteract an earlier "--index-version",
or override a pack.indexversion config setting. But the semantics aren't
immediately obvious, and it's unlikely anybody wants this. Let's just
disable the broken option for now.

Running "git ls-files --no-exclude" will currently segfault, as its
option callback does not handle the "unset" parameter.
In theory this could be used to clear the exclude list, but it is not
clear how that would interact with the other exclude options, nor is the
current code capable of clearing the list. Let's just disable the broken
option.
Note that --no-exclude-from will similarly segfault, but
--no-exclude-standard will not. It just silently does the wrong thing
(pretending as if --exclude-standard was specified).

With refresh_index() learning to utilize preload_index() to speed up its
operation there is no longer any benefit to having the caller preload the
index first. Remove those unneeded calls by calling read_index() instead of
the preload variant.
There is no measurable performance impact of this patch - the 2nd call to
preload_index() bails out quickly but there is no reason to call it twice.

When NO_PTHREADS is still used in this file, we have two separate code
paths for thread and no thread support. The latter will always have
num_threads remain zero while the former uses num_threads zero as
"default number of threads".
With recent changes blur the line between thread and no-thread
support, this num_threads handling becomes a bit strange so let's
redefine it like this:
- num_threads == 0 means default number of threads and should become
positive after all configuration and option parsing is done if
multithread is supported.
- num_threads <= 1 runs no threads. It does not matter if the platform
supports threading or not.
- num_threads > 1 will run multiple threads and is invalid if
HAVE_THREADS is false. pthread API is only used in this case.
PS. a new warning is also added when num_threads is forced back to one
because a thread-incompatible option is specified.

During an "add", a call is made to run_diff_files() which calls
check_removed() for each index-entry. The preload_index() code
distributes some of the costs across multiple threads.
Because the files checked are restricted to pathspec, adding
individual files makes no measurable impact but on a Windows repo
with ~200K files, 'git add .' drops from 6.3 seconds to 3.3 seconds
for a 47% savings.

The xdiff library always emits hunk header lines to our callbacks as
formatted strings like "@@ -a,b +c,d @@\n". This is convenient if we're
going to output a diff, but less so if we actually need to compute using
those numbers, which requires re-parsing the line.
In preparation for moving away from this, let's teach xdiff a new
callback function which gets the broken-out hunk information. To help
callers that don't want to use this new callback, if it's NULL we'll
continue to format the hunk header into a string.
Note that this function renames the "outf" callback to "out_line", as
well. This isn't strictly necessary, but helps in two ways:
1. Now that there are two callbacks, it's nice to use more descriptive
names.
2. Many callers did not zero the emit_callback_data struct, and needed
to be modified to set ecb.out_hunk to NULL. By changing the name of
the existing struct member, that guarantees that any new callers
from in-flight topics will break the build and be examined
manually.
