Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 4a93b899c1 libs: use "struct repository *" argument, not "the_repository"
As can easily be seen from grepping in our sources, we had these uses
of "the_repository" in various library code in cases where the
function in question was already getting a "struct repository *"
argument. Let's use that argument instead.

Out of these changes only the changes to "cache-tree.c",
"commit-reach.c", "shallow.c" and "upload-pack.c" would have cleanly
applied before the migration away from the "repo_*()" wrapper macros
in the preceding commits.

The rest aren't new, as we'd previously implicitly refer to
"the_repository", but it's now more obvious that we were doing the
wrong thing all along, and should have used the parameter instead.

The change to change "get_index_format_default(the_repository)" in
"read-cache.c" to use the "r" variable instead should arguably have
been part of [1], or in the subsequent cleanup in [2]. Let's do it
here, as can be seen from the initial code in [3] it's not important
that we use "the_repository" there, but would prefer to always use the
current repository.

This change excludes the "the_repository" use in "upload-pack.c"'s
upload_pack_advertise(), as the in-flight [4] makes that change.

Elijah Newren f394e093df treewide: be explicit about dependence on gettext.h
Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly
including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files
could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include
gettext.h if they are using it.

However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an
include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an

Derrick Stolee 97e61e0f9c refs: use ref_namespaces for replace refs base
The git_replace_ref_base global is used to store the value of the
GIT_REPLACE_REF_BASE environment variable or the default of
"refs/replace/". This is initialized within setup_git_env().

The ref_namespaces array is a new centralized location for information
such as the ref namespace used for replace refs. Instead of having this
namespace stored in two places, use the ref_namespaces array instead.

For simplicity, create a local git_replace_ref_base variable wherever
the global was previously used.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 44439c1c58 object-file API: have hash_object_file() take "enum object_type"
Change the hash_object_file() function to take an "enum
object_type".

Since a preceding commit all of its callers are passing either
"{commit,tree,blob,tag}_type", or the result of a call to type_name(),
the parse_object() caller that would pass NULL is now using
stream_object_signature().

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason c80d226a04 object-file API: have write_object_file() take "enum object_type"
Change the write_object_file() function to take an "enum object_type"
instead of a "const char *type". Its callers either passed
{commit,tree,blob,tag}_type and can pass the corresponding OBJ_* type
instead, or were hardcoding strings like "blob".

This avoids the back & forth fragility where the callers of
write_object_file() would have the enum type, and convert it
themselves via type_name(). We do have to now do that conversion
ourselves before calling write_object_file_prepare(), but those
codepaths will be similarly adjusted in subsequent commits.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 2b7098936c run-command API users: use strvec_pushl(), not argv construction
Change a pattern of hardcoding an "argv" array size, populating it and
assigning to the "argv" member of "struct child_process" to instead
use "strvec_pushl()" to add data to the "args" member.

This implements the same behavior as before in fewer lines of code,
and moves us further towards being able to remove the "argv" member in
a subsequent commit.

Since we've entirely removed the "argv" variable(s) we can be sure
that no potential logic errors of the type discussed in a preceding
commit are being introduced here, i.e. ones where the local "argv" was
being modified after the assignment to "struct child_process"'s
"argv".

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason ab628588f8 advice: move advice.graftFileDeprecated squashing to commit.[ch]
Move the squashing of the advice.graftFileDeprecated advice over to an
external variable in commit.[ch], allowing advice() to purely use the
new-style API of invoking advice() with an enum.

See 8821e90a09 (advice: don't pointlessly suggest
--convert-graft-file, 2018-11-27) for why quieting this advice was
needed. It's more straightforward to move this code to commit.[ch] and
use it builtin/replace.c, than to go through the indirection of
advice.[ch].

Because this was the last advice_config variable we can remove that
old facility from advice.c.

Jeff King d70a9eb611 strvec: rename struct fields
The "argc" and "argv" names made sense when the struct was argv_array,
but now they're just confusing. Let's rename them to "nr" (which we use
for counts elsewhere) and "v" (which is rather terse, but reads well
when combined with typical variable names like "args.v").

Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing
tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to
rewrite unrelated tokens.

Jeff King 22f9b7f3f5 strvec: convert builtin/ callers away from argv_array name
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).

This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a
manageable size.

The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

  git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' |
  xargs perl -i -pe '
    s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;
    s/argv_array/strvec/g;
  '

and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". We'll deal
with any indentation/style fallouts separately.

Matheus Tavares 2dcde20e1c sha1-file: pass git_hash_algo to hash_object_file()
Allow hash_object_file() to work on arbitrary repos by introducing a
git_hash_algo parameter. Change callers which have a struct repository
pointer in their scope to pass on the git_hash_algo from the said repo.
For all other callers, pass on the_hash_algo, which was already being
used internally at hash_object_file(). This functionality will be used
in the following patch to make check_object_signature() be able to work
on arbitrary repos (which, in turn, will be used to fix an
inconsistency at object.c:parse_object()).

Christian Couder ee521ec4cb replace: peel tag when passing a tag first to --graft
When passing a tag as the first argument to `git replace --graft`,
it can be useful to accept it and use the underlying commit as a
the commit that will be replaced.

This already works for lightweight tags, but unfortunately
for annotated tags we have been using the hash of the tag object
instead of the hash of the underlying commit.

Especially we would pass the hash of the tag object to
replace_object_oid() where we would likely fail with an error
like:

"error: Objects must be of the same type.
'annotated_replaced_object' points to a replaced object of type 'tag'
while 'replacement' points to a replacement object of type 'commit'."

This patch fixes that by using the hash of the underlying commit
when an annotated tag is passed.

Christian Couder f8e44a81bf replace: peel tag when passing a tag as parent to --graft
When passing a tag as a parent argument to `git replace --graft`,
it can be useful to accept it and use the underlying commit as a
parent.

This already works for lightweight tags, but unfortunately
for annotated tags we have been using the hash of the tag object
instead of the hash of the underlying commit as a parent in the
replacement object we create.

This created invalid objects, but the replace succeeded even if
it showed an error like:

error: object A is a tag, not a commit

This patch fixes that by using the hash of the underlying commit
when an annotated tag is passed.

While at it, let's also update an error message to make it
clearer.

Jeff King 4a7e27e957 convert "oidcmp() == 0" to oideq()
Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run,
give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these
callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete
noop with respect to the generated code.

The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it
avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in
C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it
anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double
negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances
here).

This patch was generated almost entirely by the included
coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be
completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where
oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing
under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()"
separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the
two are treated equivalently.

I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output
to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the
original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines).

Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy 1a07e59c3e Update messages in preparation for i18n
Many messages will be marked for translation in the following
commits. This commit updates some of them to be more consistent and
reduce diff noise in those commits. Changes are

- keep the first letter of die(), error() and warning() in lowercase
- no full stop in die(), error() or warning() if it's single sentence
  messages
- indentation
- some messages are turned to BUG(), or prefixed with "BUG:" and will
  not be marked for i18n
- some messages are improved to give more information
- some messages are broken down by sentence to be i18n friendly
(on the same token, combine multiple warning() into one big string)
- the trailing \n is converted to printf_ln if possible, or deleted
  if not redundant
- errno_errno() is used instead of explicit strerror()

Jeff King 6ebd1cafe2 check_replace_refs: rename to read_replace_refs
This was added as a NEEDSWORK in c3c36d7de2 (replace-object:
check_replace_refs is safe in multi repo environment, 2018-04-11),
waiting for a calmer period. Since doing so now doesn't conflict
with anything in 'pu', it seems as good a time as any.

Stefan Beller 0e740fed5d tag: add repository argument to parse_tag_buffer
Add a repository argument to allow the callers of parse_tag_buffer
to be more specific about which repository to act on. This is a small
mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle
repositories other than the_repository yet.

As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.
