Joanna Wang 1164c7232e attr: enable attr pathspec magic for git-add and git-stash
Allow users to limit or exclude files based on file attributes
during git-add and git-stash.

For example, the chromium project would like to use

    $ git add . ':(exclude,attr:submodule)'

as submodules are managed by an external tool, forbidding end users
to record changes with "git add". Allowing "git add" to often
records changes that users do not want in their commits.

This commit does not change any attr magic implementation. It is
only adding attr as an allowed pathspec in git-add and git-stash,
which was previously blocked by GUARD_PATHSPEC and a pathspec mask
in parse_pathspec()).

However, we fix a bug in prefix_magic() where attr values were
unintentionally removed. This was triggerable when parse_pathspec()
is called with PATHSPEC_PREFIX_ORIGIN as a flag, which was the case
for git-stash (Bug originally filed here [*])

Furthermore, while other commands hit this code path it did not
result in unexpected behavior because this bug only impacts the
pathspec->items->original field which is NOT used to filter
paths. However, git-stash does use pathspec->items->original when
building args used to call other git commands. (See add_pathspecs()
usage and implementation in stash.c)

It is possible that when the attr pathspec feature was first added
in b0db704652 (pathspec: allow querying for attributes, 2017-03-13),
"PATHSPEC_ATTR" was just unintentionally left out of a few
GUARD_PATHSPEC() invocations.

Later, to get a more user-friendly error message when attr was used
with git-add, PATHSPEC_ATTR was added as a mask to git-add's
invocation of parse_pathspec() 84d938b732 (add: do not accept
pathspec magic 'attr', 2018-09-18). However, this user-friendly
error message was never added for git-stash.

Kristoffer Haugsbakk b1688ea02d grep: die gracefully when outside repository
Die gracefully when `git grep --no-index` is run outside of a Git
repository and the path is outside the directory tree.

If you are not in a Git repository and say:

    git grep --no-index search ..

You trigger a `BUG`:

BUG: environment.c:213: git environment hasn't been setup
    Aborted (core dumped)

Because `..` is a valid path which is treated as a pathspec. Then
`pathspec` figures out that it is not in the current directory tree. The
`BUG` is triggered when `pathspec` tries to advise the user about how the
path is not in the current (non-existing) repository.

The include of wildmatch.h in git-compat-util.h was added in cebcab189a
(Makefile: add USE_WILDMATCH to use wildmatch as fnmatch, 2013-01-01) as
a way to be able to compile-time force any calls to fnmatch() to instead

John Cai 44451a2e5e attr: teach "--attr-source=<tree>" global option to "git"
Earlier, 47cfc9bd (attr: add flag `--source` to work with tree-ish,
2023-01-14) taught "git check-attr" the "--source=<tree>" option to
allow it to read attribute files from a tree-ish, but did so only
for the command. Just like "check-attr" users wanted a way to use
attributes from a tree-ish and not from the working tree files,
users of other commands (like "git diff") would benefit from the
same.

Undo most of the UI change the commit made, while keeping the
internal logic to read attributes from a given tree-ish. Expose the
internal logic via a new "--attr-source=<tree>" command line option
given to "git", so that it can be used with any git command that
runs as part of the main git process.

Additionally, add an environment variable GIT_ATTR_SOURCE that is set
when --attr-source is passed in, so that subprocesses use the same value
for the attributes source tree.

Elijah Newren d1cbe1e6d8 hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.h
hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and
use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However,
most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout
of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not
depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level"
parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where
the convenience inline functions aren't needed.

This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It
also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was
brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously
implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be
more explicit about what they depend upon.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 5a7d41d849 docs & comments: replace mentions of "git-add--interactive.perl"
Now that we've removed "git-add--interactive.perl" let's replace

The "borrowed" comment here likewise isn't wrong, but let's mention

item should refer to the current code (and the comment may not even be

Karthik Nayak 47cfc9bd7d attr: add flag `--source` to work with tree-ish
The contents of the .gitattributes files may evolve over time, but "git
check-attr" always checks attributes against them in the working tree
and/or in the index. It may be beneficial to optionally allow the users
to check attributes taken from a commit other than HEAD against paths.

Add a new flag `--source` which will allow users to check the
attributes against a commit (actually any tree-ish would do). When the
user uses this flag, we go through the stack of .gitattributes files but
instead of checking the current working tree and/or in the index, we
check the blobs from the provided tree-ish object. This allows the
command to also be used in bare repositories.

Since we use a tree-ish object, the user can pass "--source
HEAD:subdirectory" and all the attributes will be looked up as if
subdirectory was the root directory of the repository.

We cannot simply use the `<rev>:<path>` syntax without the `--source`
flag, similar to how it is used in `git show` because any non-flag
parameter before `--` is treated as an attribute and any parameter after
`--` is treated as a pathname.

The change involves creating a new function `read_attr_from_blob`, which
given the path reads the blob for the path against the provided source and
parses the attributes line by line. This function is plugged into
`read_attr()` function wherein we go through the stack of attributes
files.

Shaoxuan Yuan b29ad38322 pathspec.h: move pathspec_needs_expanded_index() from reset.c to here
Method pathspec_needs_expanded_index() in reset.c from 4d1cfc1351
(reset: make --mixed sparse-aware, 2021-11-29) is reusable when we
need to verify if the index needs to be expanded when the command
is utilizing a pathspec rather than a literal path.

Move it to pathspec.h for reusability.

Add a few items to the function so it can better serve its purpose as
a standalone public function:

* Add a check in front so if the index is not sparse, return early since
  no expansion is needed.

* It now takes an arbitrary 'struct index_state' pointer instead of
  using `the_index` and `active_cache`.

* Add documentation to the function.

Junio C Hamano f00809500f Merge branch 'jc/all-negative-pathspec'
A git subcommand like "git add -p" spawns a separate git process
while relaying its command line arguments. A pathspec with only
negative elements was mistakenly passed with an empty string, which
has been corrected.

* jc/all-negative-pathspec:

2022-06-07 14:10:59 -07:00
Junio C Hamano b02fdbc80a pathspec: correct an empty string used as a pathspec element
Pathspecs with only negative elements did not work with some
commands that pass the pathspec along to a subprocess. For
instance,

    $ git add -p -- ':!*.txt'

should add everything except for paths ending in ".txt", but it gets
complaint from underlying "diff-index" and aborts.

We used to error out when a pathspec with only negative elements in
it, like the one in the above example. Later, 859b7f1d (pathspec:
don't error out on all-exclusionary pathspec patterns, 2017-02-07)
updated the logic to add an empty string as an extra element. The
intention was to let the extra element to match everything and let
the negative ones given by the user to subtract from it.

At around the same time, we were migrating from "an empty string is
a valid pathspec element that matches everything" to "either a dot
or ":/" is used to match all, and an empty string is rejected",
between d426430e (pathspec: warn on empty strings as pathspec,
2016-06-22) and 9e4e8a64 (pathspec: die on empty strings as
pathspec, 2017-06-06). I think 9e4e8a64, which happened long after
859b7f1d happened, was not careful enough to turn the empty string
859b7f1d added to either a dot or ":/".

A care should be taken as the definition of "everything" depends on
subcommand. For the purpose of "add -p", adding a "." to add
everything in the current directory is the right thing to do. But
for some other commands, ":/" (i.e. really really everything, even
things outside the current subdirectory) is the right choice.

We would break commands in a big way if we get this wrong, so add a
handful of test pieces to make sure the resulting code still
excludes the paths that are expected and includes "everything" else.

Derrick Stolee 49fdd51a23 add: skip tracked paths outside sparse-checkout cone
When 'git add' adds a tracked file that is outside of the
sparse-checkout cone, it checks the SKIP_WORKTREE bit to see if the file
exists outside of the sparse-checkout cone. This is usually correct,
except in the case of a merge conflict outside of the cone.

Modify add_pathspec_matched_against_index() to be more careful about
paths by checking the sparse-checkout patterns in addition to the
SKIP_WORKTREE bit. This causes 'git add' to no longer allow files
outside of the cone that removed the SKIP_WORKTREE bit due to a merge
conflict.

With only this change, users will only be able to add the file after
adding the file to the sparse-checkout cone. A later change will allow
users to force adding even though the file is outside of the
sparse-checkout cone.

Derrick Stolee 4eaffd81a5 pathspec: stop calling ensure_full_index
The add_pathspec_matches_against_index() focuses on matching a pathspec
to file entries in the index. This already works correctly for its only
use: checking if untracked files exist in the index.

The compatibility checks in t1092 already test that 'git add <dir>'
works for a directory outside of the sparse cone. That provides coverage
for removing this guard.

This finalizes our ability to run 'git add .' without expanding a sparse
index to a full one. This is evidenced by an update to t1092 and by
these performance numbers for p2000-sparse-operations.sh:

Test HEAD~1 HEAD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2000.10: git add . (full-index-v3) 0.37(0.28+0.07) 0.36(0.27+0.06) -2.7%
2000.11: git add . (full-index-v4) 0.33(0.26+0.06) 0.32(0.28+0.05) -3.0%
2000.12: git add . (sparse-index-v3) 0.57(0.53+0.07) 0.06(0.06+0.07) -89.5%
2000.13: git add . (sparse-index-v4) 0.57(0.53+0.07) 0.05(0.03+0.09) -91.2%

While the ~90% improvement is shown by the test results, it is worth
noting that expanding the sparse index was adding overhead in previous
commits. Comparing to the full index case, we see the performance go
from 0.33s to 0.05s, an 85% improvement.

Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing
tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to
rewrite unrelated tokens.

Jeff King c972bf4cf5 strvec: convert remaining callers away from argv_array name
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).

This patch converts all of the remaining files, as the resulting diff is
reasonably sized.

The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

  git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' |
  xargs perl -i -pe '
    s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;
    s/argv_array/strvec/g;
  '

We'll deal with any indentation/style fallouts separately.

Jeff King dbbcd44fb4 strvec: rename files from argv-array to strvec
This requires updating #include lines across the code-base, but that's
all fairly mechanical, and was done with:

  xargs perl -i -pe 's/argv-array.h/strvec.h/'

Emily Shaffer 5c20398699 prefix_path: show gitdir if worktree unavailable
If there is no worktree at present, we can still hint the user about
Git's current directory by showing them the absolute path to the Git
directory. Even though the Git directory doesn't make it as easy to
locate the worktree in question, it can still help a user figure out
what's going on while developing a script.

This fixes a segmentation fault introduced in e0020b2f

Emily Shaffer e0020b2f82 prefix_path: show gitdir when arg is outside repo
When developing a script, it can be painful to understand why Git thinks
something is outside the current repo, if the current repo isn't what
the user thinks it is. Since this can be tricky to diagnose, especially
in cases like submodules or nested worktrees, let's give the user a hint
about which repository is offended about that path.

Alexandr Miloslavskiy 24e4750c96 pathspec: add new function to parse file
This will be used to support the new option '--pathspec-from-file' in
`git add`, `git-commit`, `git reset` etc.

Note also that we specifically handle CR/LF line endings to support
Windows better.

To simplify code, file is first parsed into `argv_array`. This allows
to avoid refactoring `parse_pathspec()`.

I considered adding `nul_term_line` to `flags` instead, but decided
that it doesn't fit there.

The new code is mostly taken from `cmd_update_index()` and
`split_mail_conv()`.

Johannes Schindelin c3c3486b24 Convert remaining die*(BUG) messages
These were not caught by the previous commit, as they did not match the
regular expression.

While at it, remove the localization from one instance: we never want
BUG() messages to be translated, as they target Git developers, not the
end user (hence it would be quite unhelpful to not only burden the
translators, but then even end up with a bug report in a language that
no core Git contributor understands).

Johannes Schindelin 033abf97fc Replace all die("BUG: ...") calls by BUG() ones
In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then
subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae5
(setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12).

The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch
(cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not
terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan
is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs.

Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop.

This trick was performed by this invocation:

	sed -i 's/die("BUG: /BUG("/g' $(git grep -l 'die("BUG' \*.c)

illegal. We started this by first deprecating and warning a

year? A deprecation warning period that is about 1 year does not
sound too bad.

Jonathan Nieder 29c0e902a8 pathspec doc: parse_pathspec does not maintain references to args
The command line arguments passed to main() are valid for the life of
a program, but the same is not true for all other argv-style arrays
(e.g. when a caller creates an argv_array). Clarify that
parse_pathspec does not rely on the argv passed to it to remain valid.

This makes it easier to tell that callers like "git rev-list --stdin"
are safe and ensures that that is more likely to remain true as the
implementation of parse_pathspec evolves.
