Jeff King 94221d2203 t: use perl instead of "$PERL_PATH" where applicable
As of the last commit, we can use "perl" instead of
"$PERL_PATH" when running tests, as the former is now a
function which uses the latter. As the shorter "perl" is
easier on the eyes, let's switch to using it everywhere.

This is not quite a mechanical s/$PERL_PATH/perl/
replacement, though. There are some places where we invoke
perl from a script we generate on the fly, and those scripts
do not have access to our internal shell functions. The
result can be double-checked by running:

  ln -s /bin/false bin-wrappers/perl
  make test

which continues to pass even after this patch.

Matthieu Moy 2f0f7f1ce7 status: add missing blank line after list of "other" files
List of files in other sections ("Changes to be committed", ...) end with
a blank line. It is not the case with the "Untracked files" and "Ignored

Matthieu Moy 1c7969c933 tests: don't set status.displayCommentPrefix file-wide
The previous commit set status.displayCommentPrefix file-wide in
t7060-wtstatus.sh, t7508-status.sh and t/t7512-status-help.sh to make the
patch small. However, now that status.displayCommentPrefix is not the
default, it is better to disable it in tests so that the most common
situation is also the most tested.

Matthieu Moy 2556b9962e status: disable display of '#' comment prefix by default
Historically, "git status" needed to prefix each output line with '#' so
that the output could be added as comment to the commit message. This
prefix comment has no real purpose when "git status" is ran from the
command-line, and this may distract users from the real content.

Disable this prefix comment by default, and make it re-activable for
users needing backward compatibility with status.displayCommentPrefix.

Obviously, "git commit" ignores status.displayCommentPrefix and keeps the
comment unconditionnaly when writing to COMMIT_EDITMSG (but not when
writing to stdout for an error message or with --dry-run).

Brian M. Carlson 927b26f87a submodule: don't print status output with ignore=all
git status prints information for submodules, but it should ignore the status of
those which have submodule.<name>.ignore set to all. Fix it so that it does
properly ignore those which have that setting either in .git/config or in
.gitmodules.

Not ignored are submodules that are added, deleted, or moved (which is
essentially a combination of the first two) because it is not easily possible to
determine the old path once a move has occurred, nor is it easily possible to
detect which adds and deletions are moves and which are not. This also
preserves the previous behavior of always listing modules which are to be
deleted.

Tests are included which verify that this change has no effect on git submodule
summary without the --for-status option.

Junio C Hamano eff80a9fd9 Allow custom "comment char"
Some users do want to write a line that begin with a pound sign, #,
in their commit log message. Many tracking system recognise
a token of #<bugid> form, for example.

The support we offer these use cases is not very friendly to the end
users. They have a choice between

 - Don't do it. Avoid such a line by rewrapping or indenting; and

 - Use --cleanup=whitespace but remove all the hint lines we add.

Give them a way to set a custom comment char, e.g.

    $ git -c core.commentchar="%" commit

so that they do not have to do either of the two workarounds.

Vincent van Ravesteijn a3428205e6 t: Replace 'perl' by $PERL_PATH
GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS defines PERL_PATH to be used in the test suite. Only a
few tests already actually use this variable when perl is needed. The
other test just call 'perl' and it might happen that the wrong perl
interpreter is used.

This becomes problematic on Windows, when the perl interpreter that is
compiled and installed on the Windows system is used, because this perl
interpreter might introduce some unexpected LF->CRLF conversions.

This patch makes sure that $PERL_PATH is used everywhere in the test suite
and that the correct perl interpreter is used.

There is no reason not to, as the user has to explicitly ask

Jens Lehmann aee9c7d654 Submodules: Add the new "ignore" config option for diff and status
The new "ignore" config option controls the default behavior for "git
status" and the diff family. It specifies under what circumstances they
consider submodules as modified and can be set separately for each
submodule.

The command line option "--ignore-submodules=" has been extended to accept
the new parameter "none" for both status and diff.

Users that chose submodules to get rid of long work tree scanning times
might want to set the "dirty" option for those submodules. This brings
back the pre 1.7.0 behavior, where submodule work trees were never
scanned for modifications. By using "--ignore-submodules=none" on the
command line the status and diff commands can be told to do a full scan.

This option can be set to the following values (which have the same name
and meaning as for the "--ignore-submodules" option of status and diff):

"all": All changes to the submodule will be ignored.

"dirty": Only differences of the commit recorded in the superproject and
the submodules HEAD will be considered modifications, all changes
to the work tree of the submodule will be ignored. When using this
value, the submodule will not be scanned for work tree changes at
all, leading to a performance benefit on large submodules.

"untracked": Only untracked files in the submodules work tree are ignored,
a changed HEAD and/or modified files in the submodule will mark it
	as modified.

"none" (which is the default): Either untracked or modified files in a
submodules work tree or a difference between the subdmodules HEAD
and the commit recorded in the superproject will make it show up
as changed. This value is added as a new parameter for the
"--ignore-submodules" option of the diff family and "git status"
so the user can override the settings in the configuration.

Jens Lehmann 46a958b3da Add the option "--ignore-submodules" to "git status"
In some use cases it is not desirable that "git status" considers
submodules that only contain untracked content as dirty. This may happen
e.g. when the submodule is not under the developers control and not all
build generated files have been added to .gitignore by the upstream
developers. Using the "untracked" parameter for the "--ignore-submodules"
option disables checking for untracked content and lets git diff report
them as changed only when they have new commits or modified content.

Sometimes it is not wanted to have submodules show up as changed when they
just contain changes to their work tree (this was the behavior before
1.7.0). An example for that are scripts which just want to check for
submodule commits while ignoring any changes to the work tree. Also users
having large submodules known not to change might want to use this option,
as the - sometimes substantial - time it takes to scan the submodule work
tree(s) is saved when using the "dirty" parameter.

And if you want to ignore any changes to submodules, you can now do that
by using this option without parameters or with "all" (when the config
option status.submodulesummary is set, using "all" will also suppress the
output of the submodule summary).

A new function handle_ignore_submodules_arg() is introduced to parse this
option new to "git status" in a single location, as "git diff" already
knew it.

Michael J Gruber 980bde3894 wt-status: take advice.statusHints seriously
Currently, status gives a lot of hints even when advice.statusHints is
false. Change this so that all hints depend on the config variable.

Markus Heidelberg 4bb6644d03 git status: refresh the index if possible
This was already the case before commit 9e4b7ab6 (git status: not
"commit --dry-run" anymore, 2009-08-15) with the difference that it died
at failure.
It got lost during the new implementation of "git status", which was
meant to only change behaviour when invoked with arguments.
