Paul Tan 5b05b92d03 t3901: test git-am encoding conversion
Since d1c5f2a (Add git-am, applymbox replacement., 2005-10-07), git-am
supported the --utf8 and --no-utf8 options, and if set, would pass the
-u flag and the -k flag respectively.

git mailinfo -u will re-code the commit log message and authorship info
in the charset specified by i18n.commitencoding setting, while
git mailinfo -n will disable the re-coding.

Since d84029b (--utf8 is now default for 'git-am', 2007-01-08), --utf8
is set by default in git-am.

Add various encoding conversion tests to t3901 to test git-mailinfo's
encoding conversion. In addition, add a test for --no-utf8 to check that
no encoding conversion will occur if that option is set.

Jeff King c6587bddc4 t: simplify loop exit-code status variables
Since shell loops may drop the exit code of failed commands
inside the loop, some tests try to keep track of the status
by setting a variable. This can end up cumbersome and hard
to read; it is much simpler to just exit directly from the
loop using "return 1" (since each case is either in a helper
function or inside a test snippet).

Junio C Hamano f57a8715bc test prerequisites: eradicate NOT_FOO
Support for Back when bdccd3c1 (test-lib: allow negation of
prerequisites, 2012-11-14) introduced negated predicates
(e.g. "!MINGW,!CYGWIN"), we already had 5 test files that use
NOT_MINGW (and a few MINGW) as prerequisites.

Let's not add NOT_FOO and rewrite existing ones as !FOO for both
MINGW and CYGWIN.

Karsten Blees 32f4cb6cee MinGW: disable legacy encoding tests
On Windows, all native APIs are Unicode-based. It is impossible to pass
legacy encoded byte arrays to a process via command line or environment
variables. Disable the tests that try to do so.

In t3901, most tests still work if we don't mess up the repository encoding
in setup, so don't switch to ISO-8859-1 on MinGW.

Note that i18n tests that do their encoding tricks via encoded files (such
as t3900) are not affected by this.

Brandon Casey 1e6bca0e89 t3901: Use ISO8859-1 instead of ISO-8859-1 for backward compatibility
Some ancient platforms do not have an extensive list of alternate names for
character encodings. For example, Solaris 7 does not know that ISO-8859-1
is the same as ISO8859-1. Modern platforms do know this, so use the older
name.

Brandon Casey d4ea4e2746 t3901: avoid negation on right hand side of '|'
Some shells do not properly handle constructs of the form:

   spew_something | ! process_input

So rewrite this to be:

   spew_something | process_input; test $? != 0

Junio C Hamano bfdbee9810 tests: use $TEST_DIRECTORY to refer to the t/ directory
Many test scripts assumed that they will start in a 'trash' subdirectory
that is a single level down from the t/ directory, and referred to their
test vector files by asking for files like "../t9999/expect". This will
break if we move the 'trash' subdirectory elsewhere.

To solve this, we earlier introduced "$TEST_DIRECTORY" so that they can
refer to t/ directory reliably. This finally makes all the tests use
it to refer to the outside environment.

With this patch, and a one-liner not included here (because it would
contradict with what Dscho really wants to do):

| diff --git a/t/test-lib.sh b/t/test-lib.sh
| index 70ea7e0..60e69e4 100644
| --- a/t/test-lib.sh

| +test="trash directory/another level/yet another"
|  rm -fr "$test" || {
| trap - exit
| echo >&5 "FATAL: Cannot prepare test area"

all the tests still pass, but we would want extra sets of eyeballs on this
type of change to really make sure.

Kristian Høgsberg 996e2d6ea2 Use =20 when rfc2047 encoding spaces.
Encode ' ' using '=20' even though rfc2047 allows using '_' for
readability. Unfortunately, many programs do not understand this and
just leave the underscore in place. Using '=20' seems to work better.

Junio C Hamano a731ec5eb8 t3901: test "format-patch | am" pipe with i18n
This checks combinations of i18n.commitencoding (declares what
encoding you are feeding commit-tree to make commits) and
i18n.logoutputencoding (instructs what encoding to emit the
commit message out to log output, including e-mail format) to
make sure the "format-patch | am" pipe used in git-rebase works
correctly.

I suspect "git cherry-pick" and "git rebase --merge" may fail
similar tests. We'll see.
