Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy 3ac68a93fd help: add --config to list all available config
Sometimes it helps to list all available config vars so the user can
search for something they want. The config man page can also be used
but it's harder to search if you want to focus on the variable name,
for example.

This is not the best way to collect the available config since it's
not precise. Ideally we should have a centralized list of config in C
code (pretty much like 'struct option'), but that's a lot more work.
This will do for now.

Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy 63eae83f8f help: add "-a --verbose" to list all commands with synopsis
This lists all recognized commands [1] by category. The group order
follows closely git.txt.

[1] We may actually show commands that are not built (e.g. if you set
NO_PERL you don't have git-instaweb but it's still listed here). I
ignore the problem because on Linux a git package could be split
anyway. The "git-core" package may not contain git-instaweb even if
it's built because it may end up in a separate package. We can't know
anyway.

Similarly to the previous commit, use backquotes instead of
forward-quotes, for long options.

This was obtained with:

Matthieu Moy 23f8239bbe doc: typeset short command-line options as literal
It was common in our documentation to surround short option names with
forward quotes, which renders as italic in HTML. Instead, use backquotes
which renders as monospace. This is one more step toward conformance to
Documentation/CodingGuidelines.

Wrap with backticks (monospaced font) unwrapped or single-quotes wrapped

that people writting new documentation by mimicking the existing are more likely

Martin von Zweigbergk 7791a1d9b9 Documentation: use [verse] for SYNOPSIS sections
The SYNOPSIS sections of most commands that span several lines already
use [verse] to retain line breaks. Most commands that don't span
several lines seem not to use [verse]. In the HTML output, [verse]
does not only preserve line breaks, but also makes the section
indented, which causes a slight inconsistency between commands that
use [verse] and those that don't. Use [verse] in all SYNOPSIS sections
for consistency.

Also remove the blank lines from git-fetch.txt and git-rebase.txt to
align with the other man pages. In the case of git-rebase.txt, which
already uses [verse], the blank line makes the [verse] not apply to
the last line, so removing the blank line also makes the formatting
within the document more consistent.

While at it, add single quotes to 'git cvsimport' for consistency with
other commands.

Jeff King 48bb914ed6 doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pages
The point of these sections is generally to:

  1. Give credit where it is due.

  2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or
     file bug reports.

But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they
are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer
can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the
correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you
wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and
incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody
useless.

So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except
git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list
for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section
to give credit to the major contributors and point to
shortlog and blame for more information.

Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can
follow that to the main git manpage.

Junio C Hamano 2839478774 Work around em-dash handling in newer AsciiDoc
Older versions of AsciiDoc used to literally pass double dashes when we
used them in our linkgit macros and manpage titles, but newer ones (the
issue was first reported with AsciiDoc 8.5.2) turn them into em dashes.

Define litdd (literal double-dash) custom attribute in asciidoc.conf to
work this around. While we are at it, fix a few double-dashes (e.g. the
description of "project--devo--version" convention used by tla, among
other things) that used to be incorrectly written as em dashes in the body
text to also use this attribute.

Thomas Rast 0b444cdb19 Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughout
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it
only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax:
both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist.

The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent
in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands.,
2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants.

Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell,
git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and
git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the
$PATH.

With git-commands moving out of $(bindir), it is useful to make a

Stephan Beyer 3240240ff4 Docs: Use "-l::\n--long\n" format in OPTIONS sections
The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list
of the options a git command accepts.

Currently there are several variants to describe the case that
different options (almost) do the same in the OPTIONS section.

Some are:

 -f, --foo::
 -f|--foo::
 -f | --foo::

But AsciiDoc has the special form:

 -f::
 --foo::

This patch applies this form to the documentation of the whole git suite,
and removes useless em-dash prevention, so \--foo becomes --foo.

Asciidoc configuration:

 # Inline macros.

 (?su)[\\]?\[\[\[(?P<attrlist>[\w][\w-]*?)\]\]\]=anchor3

This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this
case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline

Christian Couder 70087cdbd3 git-help: add "help.format" config variable.
This config variable makes it possible to choose the default format
used to display help. This format will be used only if no option
like -a|--all|-i|--info|-m|--man|-w|--web is passed to "git-help".

The following values are possible for this variable:

	- "man" --> "man" program is used
	- "info" --> "info" program is used
	- "web"  --> "git-browse-help" is used

By default we still show help using "man".

This patch also adds -m|--man command line option to use "man"
to allow overriding the "help.format" configuration variable.
