Junio C Hamano 97616ca488 Merge branch 'en/unicode-in-refnames'
On a filesystem like HFS+, the names of the refs stored as filesystem
entities may become different from what the end-user expects, just
like files in the working tree get "renamed". Work around the
mismatch by paying attention to the core.precomposeUnicode
configuration.

Elijah Newren 8e712ef6fc Honor core.precomposeUnicode in more places
On Mac's HFS where git sets core.precomposeUnicode to true automatically
by git init/clone, when a user creates a simple unicode refname (in NFC
format) such as españa:

  $ git branch españa

different commands would display the branch name differently. For
example, git branch, git log --decorate, and git fast-export all used

  65 73 70 61 c3 b1 61 (or "espa\xc3\xb1a")

(NFC form) while show-ref would use

  65 73 70 61 6e cc 83 61 (or "espan\xcc\x83a")

(NFD form). A stress test for git filter-repo was tripped up by this
inconsistency, though digging in I found that the problems could
compound; for example, if the user ran

  $ git pack-refs --all

and then tried to check out the branch, they would be met with:

  $ git checkout españa
error: pathspec 'españa' did not match any file(s) known to git

  $ git checkout españa --
  fatal: invalid reference: españa

  $ git branch
    españa
  * master

Note that the user could run the `git branch` command first and copy and
paste the `españa` portion of the output and still see the same two
errors. Also, if the user added --no-prune to the pack-refs command,
then they would see three branches: master, españa, and españa (those
last two are NFC vs. NFD forms, even if they render the same).

Further, if the user had the `españa` branch checked out before
running `git pack-refs --all`, the user would be greeted with (note
that I'm trimming trailing output with an ellipsis):

  $ git rev-parse HEAD
fatal: ambiguous argument 'HEAD': unknown revision or path...

  $ git status
  On branch españa

  No commits yet...

Or worse, if the user didn't check this stuff first, running `git
commit` will create a new commit with all changes of all of history
being squashed into it.

In addition to pack-refs, one could also get into this state with
upload-pack or anything that calls either pack-refs or upload-pack (e.g.
gc or clone).

Add code in a few places (pack-refs, show-ref, upload-pack) to check and
honor the setting of core.precomposeUnicode to avoid these bugs.

Jeff King 98374a07c9 convert has_sha1_file() callers to has_object_file()
The only remaining callers of has_sha1_file() actually have an object_id
already. They can use the "object" variant, rather than dereferencing
the hash themselves.

The code changes here were completely generated by the included

Jeff King 517fe807d6 assert NOARG/NONEG behavior of parse-options callbacks
When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option
struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback
which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with
PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not
defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier
patches in this series show).

Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with
-Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset"
parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered
with PARSE_OPT_NOARG).

But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its
callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence
the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls
in the future.

We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that
they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern,
we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't
as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from
BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that
these should never be seen).

Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers
-Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers
use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable).

Stefan Beller cbd53a2193 object-store: move object access functions to object-store.h
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.

In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file

As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

Junio C Hamano 33e8fc8740 usage: do not insist that standard input must come from a file
The synopsys text and the usage string of subcommands that read list
of things from the standard input are often shown like this:

	git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes>

This is problematic in a number of ways:

 * The way to use these commands is more often to feed them the
output from another command, not feed them from a file.

 * Manual pages outside Git, commands that operate on the data read
from the standard input, e.g "sort", "grep", "sed", etc., are not
described with such a "< redirection-from-file" in their synopsys
text. Our doing so introduces inconsistency.

 * We do not insist on where the output should go, by saying

	git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> > <output>

 * As it is our convention to enclose placeholders inside <braket>,
the redirection operator followed by a placeholder filename
becomes very hard to read, both in the documentation and in the
   help text.

Let's clean them all up, after making sure that the documentation
clearly describes the modes that take information from the standard
input and what kind of things are expected on the input.

Michael Haggerty 2b2a5be394 each_ref_fn: change to take an object_id parameter
Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid"
parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1".

To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap
old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called
"each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new
interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be
wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be
used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter().

This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple,
mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref"
family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be
rewritten one by one to use the new interface.

Stefan Beller 4741edd549 Remove deprecated OPTION_BOOLEAN for parsing arguments
As of b04ba2bb4 OPTION_BOOLEAN was deprecated.
This commit removes all occurrences of OPTION_BOOLEAN.
In b04ba2bb4 Junio suggested to replace it with either
OPTION_SET_INT or OPTION_COUNTUP instead. However a pattern, which
occurred often with the OPTION_BOOLEAN was a hidden boolean parameter.
So I defined OPT_HIDDEN_BOOL as an additional possible parse option
in parse-options.h to make life easy.

The OPT_HIDDEN_BOOL was used in checkout, clone, commit, show-ref.
The only exception, where there was need to fiddle with OPTION_SET_INT
was log and notes. However in these two files there is also a pattern,
so we could think of introducing OPT_NONEG_BOOL.

Jeff King e6dbffa67b peel_ref: do not return a null sha1
The idea of the peel_ref function is to dereference tag
objects recursively until we hit a non-tag, and return the
sha1. Conceptually, it should return 0 if it is successful
(and fill in the sha1), or -1 if there was nothing to peel.

However, the current behavior is much more confusing. For a
regular loose ref, the behavior is as described above. But
there is an optimization to reuse the peeled-ref value for a
ref that came from a packed-refs file. If we have such a
ref, we return its peeled value, even if that peeled value
is null (indicating that we know the ref definitely does
_not_ peel).

It might seem like such information is useful to the caller,
who would then know not to bother loading and trying to peel
the object. Except that they should not bother loading and
trying to peel the object _anyway_, because that fallback is
already handled by peel_ref. In other words, the whole point
of calling this function is that it handles those details
internally, and you either get a sha1, or you know that it
is not peel-able.

This patch catches the null sha1 case internally and
converts it into a -1 return value (i.e., there is nothing
to peel). This simplifies callers, which do not need to
bother checking themselves.

Two callers are worth noting:

  - in pack-objects, a comment indicates that there is a
difference between non-peelable tags and unannotated
tags. But that is not the case (before or after this
patch). Whether you get a null sha1 has to do with
internal details of how peel_ref operated.

  - in show-ref, if peel_ref returns a failure, the caller
tries to decide whether to try peeling manually based on
whether the REF_ISPACKED flag is set. But this doesn't
make any sense. If the flag is set, that does not
necessarily mean the ref came from a packed-refs file
with the "peeled" extension. But it doesn't matter,
because even if it didn't, there's no point in trying to
peel it ourselves, as peel_ref would already have done
so. In other words, the fallback peeling is guaranteed
    to fail.

resolve_ref() may return a pointer to a static buffer, which is not

which doesn't seem all that different, but not having that annoying
break in "Display all 180 possibilities?" is quite a relief.

NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an
editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you
won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it
will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off
around 100 choices or something.

So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus
don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can
simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar.
