Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 29fda24dd1 run-command API: rename "env_array" to "env"
Start following-up on the rename mentioned in c7c4bdeccf (run-command
API: remove "env" member, always use "env_array", 2021-11-25) of
"env_array" to "env".

The "env_array" name was picked in 19a583dc39 (run-command: add
env_array, an optional argv_array for env, 2014-10-19) because "env"
was taken. Let's not forever keep the oddity of "*_array" for this
"struct strvec", but not for its "args" sibling.

This commit is almost entirely made with a coccinelle rule[1]. The
only manual change here is in run-command.h to rename the struct
member itself and to change "env_array" to "env" in the
CHILD_PROCESS_INIT initializer.

The rest of this is all a result of applying [1]:

 * make contrib/coccinelle/run_command.cocci.patch
 * patch -p1 <contrib/coccinelle/run_command.cocci.patch
 * git add -u

1. cat contrib/coccinelle/run_command.pending.cocci

I've avoided changing any comments and derived variable names here,
that will all be done in the next commit.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason c7c4bdeccf run-command API: remove "env" member, always use "env_array"
Remove the "env" member from "struct child_process" in favor of always
using the "env_array". As with the preceding removal of "argv" in
favor of "args" this gets rid of current and future oddities around
memory management at the API boundary (see the amended API docs).

For some of the conversions we can replace patterns like:

    child.env = env->v;

With:

    strvec_pushv(&child.env_array, env->v);

But for others we need to guard the strvec_pushv() with a NULL check,
since we're not passing in the "v" member of a "struct strvec",
e.g. in the case of tmp_objdir_env()'s return value.

Ideally we'd rename the "env_array" member to simply "env" as a
follow-up, since it and "args" are now inconsistent in not having an
"_array" suffix, and seemingly without any good reason, unless we look
at the history of how they came to be.

But as we've currently got 122 in-tree hits for a "git grep env_array"
let's leave that for now (and possibly forever). Doing that rename
would be too disruptive.

ZheNing Hu c364b7ef51 trailer: add new .cmd config option
The `trailer.<token>.command` configuration variable
specifies a command (run via the shell, so it does not have
to be a single name or path to the command, but can be a
shell script), and the first occurrence of substring $ARG is
replaced with the value given to the `interpret-trailer`
command for the token in a '--trailer <token>=<value>' argument.

This has three downsides:

* The use of $ARG in the mechanism misleads the users that
the value is passed in the shell variable, and tempt them
to use $ARG more than once, but that would not work, as
the second and subsequent $ARG are not replaced.

* Because $ARG is textually replaced without regard to the
shell language syntax, even '$ARG' (inside a single-quote
pair), which a user would expect to stay intact, would be
replaced, and worse, if the value had an unmatched single
quote (imagine a name like "O'Connor", substituted into
NAME='$ARG' to make it NAME='O'Connor'), it would result in
a broken command that is not syntactically correct (or
worse).

* The first occurrence of substring `$ARG` will be replaced
with the empty string, in the command when the command is
first called to add a trailer with the specified <token>.
This is a bad design, the nature of automatic execution
causes it to add a trailer that we don't expect.

Introduce a new `trailer.<token>.cmd` configuration that
takes higher precedence to deprecate and eventually remove
`trailer.<token>.command`, which passes the value as an
argument to the command. Instead of "$ARG", users can
refer to the value as positional argument, $1, in their
scripts. At the same time, in order to allow
`git interpret-trailers` to better simulate the behavior
of `git command -s`, 'trailer.<token>.cmd' will not
automatically execute.

Pass the number of elements first and ther size second, as expected

generate the rest of this patch.

The semantic patch would generate flip-flop diffs if both arguments
are sizeofs. We don't have such a case, and it's hard to imagine
the usefulness of such an allocation. If it ever occurs then we
could deal with it by duplicating the rule in the semantic patch to
make it cancel itself out, or we could change the code to use
CALLOC_ARRAY.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 058761f1c1 pretty format %(trailers): add a "key_value_separator"
Add a "key_value_separator" option to the "%(trailers)" pretty format,
to go along with the existing "separator" argument. In combination
these two options make it trivial to produce machine-readable (e.g. \0
and \0\0-delimited) format output.

As elaborated on in a previous commit which added "keyonly" it was
needlessly tedious to extract structured data from "%(trailers)"
before the addition of this "key_value_separator" option. As seen by
the test being added here extracting this data now becomes trivial.

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 9d87d5ae02 pretty format %(trailers): add a "keyonly"
Add support for a "keyonly". This allows for easier parsing out of the
key and value. Before if you didn't want to make assumptions about how
the key was formatted. You'd need to parse it out as e.g.:

    --pretty=format:'%H%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00)' \
                       '%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00,valueonly)'

And then proceed to deduce keys by looking at those two and
subtracting the value plus the hardcoded ": " separator from the
non-valueonly %(trailers) line. Now it's possible to simply do:

    --pretty=format:'%H%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00,keyonly)' \
                    '%x00%(trailers:separator=%x00%x00,valueonly)'

Which at least reduces it to a state machine where you get N keys and
correlate them with N values. Even better would be to have a way to
change the ": " delimiter to something easily machine-readable (a key
might contain ": " too). A follow-up change will add support for that.

I don't really have a use-case for just "keyonly" myself. I suppose it
would be useful in some cases as "key=*" matches case-insensitively,
so a plain "keyonly" will give you the variants of the keys you
matched. I'm mainly adding it to fix the inconsistency with
"valueonly".

Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 8b966a0506 pretty-format %(trailers): fix broken standalone "valueonly"
Fix %(trailers:valueonly) being a noop due to on overly eager
optimization in format_trailer_info() which skips custom formatting if
no custom options are given.

When "valueonly" was added in d9b936db52 (pretty: add support for
"valueonly" option in %(trailers), 2019-01-28) we forgot to add it to
the list of options that optimization checks for. See e.g. the
addition of "key" in 250bea0c16 (pretty: allow showing specific
trailers, 2019-01-28) for a similar change where this wasn't missed.

Thus the "valueonly" option in "%(trailers:valueonly)" was a noop and
the output was equivalent to that of a plain "%(trailers)". This
wasn't caught because the tests for it always combined it with other
options.

Fix the bug by adding !opts->value_only to the list. I initially
attempted to make this more future-proof by setting a flag if we got
to ":" in "%(trailers:" in format_commit_one() in pretty.c. However,
"%(trailers:" is also parsed in trailers_atom_parser() in
ref-filter.c.

There is an outstanding patch[1] unify those two, and such a fix, or
other future-proofing, such as changing "process_trailer_options"
flags into a bitfield, would conflict with that effort. Let's instead
do the bare minimum here as this aspect of trailers is being actively
worked on by another series.

Let's also test for a plain "valueonly" without any other options, as
well as "separator". All the other existing options on the pretty.c
path had tests where they were the only option provided. I'm also
keeping a sanity test for "%(trailers:)" being the same as
"%(trailers)". There's no reason to suspect it wouldn't be in the
current implementation, but let's keep it in the interest of black box
testing.

Jeff King 1688c9a489 interpret-trailers: allow suppressing "---" divider
Even with the newly-tightened "---" parser, it's still
possible for a commit message to trigger a false positive if
it contains something like "--- foo". If the caller knows
that it has only a single commit message, it can now tell us
with the "--no-divider" option, eliminating any false
positives.

If we were designing this from scratch, I'd probably make
this the default. But we've advertised the "---" behavior in
the documentation since interpret-trailers has existed.
Since it's meant to be scripted, breaking that would be a
bad idea.

Note that the logic is in the underlying trailer.c code,
which is used elsewhere. The default there will keep the
current behavior, but many callers will benefit from setting
this new option. That's left for future patches.

Jeff King c188668e38 interpret-trailers: tighten check for "---" patch boundary
The interpret-trailers command accepts not only raw commit
messages, but it also can manipulate trailers in
format-patch output. That means it must find the "---"
boundary separating the commit message from the patch.
However, it does so by looking for any line starting with
"---", regardless of whether there is further content.

This is overly lax compared to the parsing done in
mailinfo.c's patchbreak(), and may cause false positives
(e.g., t/perf output tables uses dashes; if you cut and
paste them into your commit message, it fools the parser).

We could try to reuse patchbreak() here, but it actually has
several heuristics that are not of interest to us (e.g.,
matching "diff -" without a three-dash separator or even a
CVS "Index:" line). We're not interested in taking in
whatever random cruft people may send, but rather handling
git-formatted patches.

Note that the existing documentation was written in a loose
way, so technically we are changing the behavior from what
it said. But this should implement the original intent in a
more accurate way.

Jeff King 00a21f5cbd trailer: pass process_trailer_opts to trailer_info_get()
Most of the trailer code has an "opts" struct which is
filled in by the caller. We don't pass it down to
trailer_info_get(), which does the initial parsing, because
there hasn't yet been a need to do so.

Let's start passing it down in preparation for adding new
options. Note that there's a single caller which doesn't
otherwise have such an options struct. Since it's just one
caller (that we'd have to modify anyway), let's not bother
with any special treatment like accepting a NULL options
struct, and just have it allocate one with the defaults.

Jeff King a3b636e215 trailer: use size_t for iterating trailer list
We store the length of the trailers list in a size_t. So on
a 64-bit system with a 32-bit int, in the unlikely case that
we manage to actually allocate a list with 2^31 entries,
we'd loop forever trying to iterate over it (our "int" would
wrap to negative before exceeding info->trailer_nr).

This probably doesn't matter in practice. Each entry is at
least a pointer plus a non-empty string, so even without
malloc overhead or the memory to hold the original string
we're parsing from, you'd need to allocate tens of
gigabytes. But it's easy enough to do it right.

Jeff King 0d2db00e24 trailer: use size_t for string offsets
Many of the string-parsing functions inside trailer.c return
integer offsets into the string (e.g., to point to the end
of the trailer block). Several of these use an "int" to
return or store the offsets. On a system where "size_t" is
much larger than "int" (e.g., most 64-bit ones), it's easy
to feed a gigantic commit message that results in a negative
offset. This can result in us reading memory before the
string (if the int is used as an index) or far after (if
it's implicitly cast to a size_t by passing to a strbuf
function).

Let's fix this by using size_t for all string offsets. Note
that several of the functions need ssize_t, since they use
"-1" as a sentinel value. The interactions here can be
pretty subtle. E.g., end_of_title in find_trailer_start()
does not itself need to be signed, but it is compared to the
result of last_line(), which is. That promotes the latter to
unsigned, and the ">=" does not behave as you might expect.

Johannes Schindelin 033abf97fc Replace all die("BUG: ...") calls by BUG() ones
In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then

The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch

Jeff King 076aa2cbda tempfile: auto-allocate tempfiles on heap
The previous commit taught the tempfile code to give up
ownership over tempfiles that have been renamed or deleted.
That makes it possible to use a stack variable like this:

  struct tempfile t;

  create_tempfile(&t, ...);
  ...
  if (!err)
          rename_tempfile(&t, ...);
  else
          delete_tempfile(&t);

But doing it this way has a high potential for creating
memory errors. The tempfile we pass to create_tempfile()
ends up on a global linked list, and it's not safe for it to
go out of scope until we've called one of those two
deactivation functions.

Imagine that we add an early return from the function that
forgets to call delete_tempfile(). With a static or heap
tempfile variable, the worst case is that the tempfile hangs
around until the program exits (and some functions like
setup_shallow_temporary rely on this intentionally, creating
a tempfile and then leaving it for later cleanup).

But with a stack variable as above, this is a serious memory
error: the variable goes out of scope and may be filled with
garbage by the time the tempfile code looks at it. Let's
see if we can make it harder to get this wrong.

Since many callers need to allocate arbitrary numbers of
tempfiles, we can't rely on static storage as a general
solution. So we need to turn to the heap. We could just ask
all callers to pass us a heap variable, but that puts the
burden on them to call free() at the right time.

Instead, let's have the tempfile code handle the heap
allocation _and_ the deallocation (when the tempfile is
deactivated and removed from the list).

This changes the return value of all of the creation
functions. For the cleanup functions (delete and rename),
we'll add one extra bit of safety: instead of taking a
tempfile pointer, we'll take a pointer-to-pointer and set it
to NULL after freeing the object. This makes it safe to
double-call functions like delete_tempfile(), as the second
call treats the NULL input as a noop. Several callsites
follow this pattern.

The resulting patch does have a fair bit of noise, as each
caller needs to be converted to handle:

  1. Storing a pointer instead of the struct itself.

  2. Passing the pointer instead of taking the struct
     address.

  3. Handling a "struct tempfile *" return instead of a file
     descriptor.

We could play games to make this less noisy. For example, by
defining the tempfile like this:

  struct tempfile {
	struct heap_allocated_part_of_tempfile {
                int fd;
                ...etc
        } *actual_data;
  }

Callers would continue to have a "struct tempfile", and it
would be "active" only when the inner pointer was non-NULL.
But that just makes things more awkward in the long run.
There aren't that many callers, so we can simply bite
the bullet and adjust all of them. And the compiler makes it
easy for us to find them all.

The interpret-trailers command recently learned some options
to make its output easier to parse (for a caller whose only
interested in picking out the trailer values). But it's not
very efficient for asking for the trailers of many commits
in a single invocation.

We already have "%(trailers)" to do that, but it doesn't

Jeff King a388b10fc1 pretty: move trailer formatting to trailer.c
The next commit will add many features to the %(trailer)
placeholder in pretty.c. We'll need to access some internal
functions of trailer.c for that, so our options are either:

  1. expose those functions publicly

or

  2. make an entry point into trailer.c to do the formatting

Doing (2) ends up exposing less surface area, though do note
that caveats in the docstring of the new function.

Jeff King 000023961a interpret-trailers: add an option to unfold values
The point of "--only-trailers" is to give a caller an output
that's easy for them to parse. Getting rid of the
non-trailer material helps, but we still may see more
complicated syntax like whitespace continuation. Let's add
an option to unfold any continuation, giving the output as a
single "key: value" line per trailer.

As a bonus, this could be used even without --only-trailers
to clean up unusual formatting in the incoming data.

Jeff King fdbdb64f49 interpret-trailers: add an option to show only existing trailers
It can be useful to invoke interpret-trailers for the
primary purpose of parsing existing trailers. But in that
case, we don't want to apply existing ifMissing or ifExists
rules from the config. Let's add a special mode where we
avoid applying those rules. Coupled with --only-trailers,
this gives us a reasonable parsing tool.

Jeff King 56c493ed1b interpret-trailers: add an option to show only the trailers
In theory it's easy for any reader who wants to parse
trailers to do so. But there are a lot of subtle corner
cases around what counts as a trailer, when the trailer
block begins and ends, etc. Since interpret-trailers already
has our parsing logic, let's let callers ask it to just
output the trailers.

They still have to parse the "key: value" lines, but at
least they can ignore all of the other corner cases.

Paolo Bonzini 0ea5292e6b interpret-trailers: add options for actions
Allow using non-default values for trailers without having to set
them up in .gitconfig first. For example, if you have the following
configuration

     trailer.signed-off-by.where = end

you may use "--where before" when a patch author forgets his
Signed-off-by and provides it in a separate email. Likewise for
--if-exists and --if-missing

Reverting to the behavior specified by .gitconfig is done with
--no-where, --no-if-exists and --no-if-missing.

Jonathan Tan e8c352c316 trailer: have function to describe trailer layout
Create a function that, taking a string, describes the position of its
trailer block (if available) and the contents thereof, and make trailer
use it. This makes it easier for other Git components, in the future, to
interpret trailer blocks in the same way as trailer.

In a subsequent patch, another component will be made to use this.

Jonathan Tan 022349c3b0 trailer: avoid unnecessary splitting on lines
trailer.c currently splits lines while processing a buffer (and also
rejoins lines when needing to invoke ignore_non_trailer).

Avoid such line splitting, except when generating the strings
corresponding to trailers (for ease of use by clients - a subsequent
patch will allow other components to obtain the layout of a trailer
block in a buffer, including the trailers themselves). The main purpose
of this is to make it easy to return pointers into the original buffer
(for a subsequent patch), but this also significantly reduces the number
of memory allocations required.

Jonathan Tan 60ef86a162 trailer: support values folded to multiple lines
Currently, interpret-trailers requires that a trailer be only on 1 line.
For example:

a: first line
   second line

would be interpreted as one trailer line followed by one non-trailer line.

Make interpret-trailers support RFC 822-style folding, treating those
lines as one logical trailer.

Jonathan Tan 146245063e trailer: allow non-trailers in trailer block
Currently, interpret-trailers requires all lines of a trailer block to
be trailers (or comments) - if not it would not identify that block as a
trailer block, and thus create its own trailer block, inserting a blank
line. For example:

  echo -e "\nSigned-off-by: x\nnot trailer" |
  git interpret-trailers --trailer "c: d"

would result in:

  Signed-off-by: x
  not trailer

  c: d

Relax the definition of a trailer block to require that the trailers (i)
are all trailers, or (ii) contain at least one Git-generated trailer and
consists of at least 25% trailers.

  Signed-off-by: x
  not trailer
  c: d

(i) is the existing functionality. (ii) allows arbitrary lines to be
included in trailer blocks, like those in [1], and still allow
interpret-trailers to be used.

Jonathan Tan fdbf4510ae trailer: clarify failure modes in parse_trailer
The parse_trailer function has a few modes of operation, all depending
on whether the separator is present in its input, and if yes, the
separator's position. Some of these modes are failure modes, and these
failure modes are handled differently depending on whether the trailer
line was sourced from a file or from a command-line argument.

Extract a function to find the separator, allowing the invokers of
parse_trailer to determine how to handle the failure modes instead of
making parse_trailer do it. In this function, also take in the list of
separators, so that we can distinguish between command line arguments
(which allow '=' as separator) and file input (which does not allow '='
as separator).
