The description of the '-L' option for `git log` and `gitk` is almost
the same, but is repeated in both 'git-log.txt' and 'gitk.txt' (the
difference being that 'git-log.txt' lists the option with a space
after '-L', while 'gitk.txt' lists it as stuck and notes that `gitk`
only understands the stuck form).
Reduce duplication by creating a new file, 'line-range-options.txt',
and include it in both files.
To simplify the presentation, only list the stuck form for both
commands, and remove the note about `gitk` only understanding the stuck
form.

The line number, regex or offset parameters <start> and <end> in
`git log -L <start>,<end>:<file>`, or the function name regex in
`git log -L :<funcname>:<file>` must exist in the starting
revision, or else the command exits with a fatal error.
This is not obvious in the documentation, so add a note to that
effect.

Currently the line-log functionality (git log -L) only supports
displaying patch output (`-p | --patch`, its default behavior) and suppressing it
(`-s | --no-patch`). A check was added in the code to that effect in 5314efaea
(line-log: detect unsupported formats, 2019-03-10) but the documentation was not
updated.
Explicitly mention that `-L` implies `-p`, that patch output can be
suppressed using `-s`, and that all other diff formats are not allowed.

Commit 1c262bb7b (doc: convert \--option to --option, 2015-05-13)
explains that we used to need to write \--option to play well with older
versions of AsciiDoc, but that we do not support such versions anymore
anyway, and that Asciidoctor literally renders \--.
With [\--], which is used to denote the optional separator between
revisions and paths, Asciidoctor renders the backslash literally.
Change all [\--] to [--]. This changes nothing for AsciiDoc version
8.6.9, but is an improvement for Asciidoctor version 1.5.4.
We use double-dashes in several list entries (\--::). In my testing, it
appears that we do need to use the backslash there, so leave those.

The old wording was somehow implying that <start> and <end> were not
regular expressions. Also, the common case is to use a plain function
name here so <funcname> makes sense (the fact that it is a regular
expression is documented in line-range-format.txt).

The gitk manpage suffers from a bit of neglect: there have been only
minor changes, and no changes to the set of options documented, since
a2df1fb (Documentation: New GUI configuration and command-line
options., 2008-11-13). In the meantime, the set of rev-list options
has been expanded several times by options that are useful in gitk,
e.g., --ancestry-path and the optional globbing for --branches, --tags
and --remotes.
Restructure and expand the manpage. List more options that the author
perceives as useful, while remaining somewhat terse. Ideally the user
should not have to look up any of the references, but we dispense with
precise explanations in some places and refer to git-log(1) instead.
Note that the options that have an easy GUI equivalent (e.g.,
--word-diff, -S, --grep) are deliberately not listed even in the cases
where they simply fill in the GUI fields.

The SYNOPSIS sections of most commands that span several lines already
use [verse] to retain line breaks. Most commands that don't span
several lines seem not to use [verse]. In the HTML output, [verse]
does not only preserve line breaks, but also makes the section
indented, which causes a slight inconsistency between commands that
use [verse] and those that don't. Use [verse] in all SYNOPSIS sections
for consistency.
Also remove the blank lines from git-fetch.txt and git-rebase.txt to
align with the other man pages. In the case of git-rebase.txt, which
already uses [verse], the blank line makes the [verse] not apply to
the last line, so removing the blank line also makes the formatting
within the document more consistent.
While at it, add single quotes to 'git cvsimport' for consistency with
other commands.

The point of these sections is generally to:
1. Give credit where it is due.
2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or
file bug reports.
But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they
are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer
can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the
correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you
wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and
incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody
useless.
So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except
git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list
for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section
to give credit to the major contributors and point to
shortlog and blame for more information.
Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can
follow that to the main git manpage.
Fix references to gitrevisions(1) in the manual pages and HTML

The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it
only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax:
both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist.
The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent
in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands.,
2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants.
Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell,
git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and
git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the
$PATH.

The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list
of the options a git command accepts.
Currently there are several variants to describe the case that
different options (almost) do the same in the OPTIONS section.
Some are:
-f, --foo::
-f|--foo::
-f | --foo::
But AsciiDoc has the special form:
-f::
--foo::
This patch applies this form to the documentation of the whole git suite,
and removes useless em-dash prevention, so \--foo becomes --foo.

all in the first place.
So I was thinking more of some explicit examples. I actually think every
command should have an example in the man-page, and hey, here's a patch to

Of course, I'm not exactly "Mr Documentation", and I don't know that this
