With Mono 2.6 we still support the 1.1 and 2.0 behaviors, so the change would
need to reflect that.

But since the chance of breaking a lot of software is very high (as nobody in
the Mono world is prepared for this), I do not think we will be shipping a 2.6
with the previous patch.

But we should do this for Mono 2.8 which is making various breaking changes.
