Yes, Xamarin is the keeper of Mono for Android and MonoTouch.

I have not found MonoTouch to have any performance issues based on what I have been doing.  MT is a mature product.  MfA is not quite as mature, but I have found that many of the perf issues I saw in MfA 1 are resolved.  If you find a performance issue, why don't you post to the mailing list.  I have found the Xamarin engineers to be very responsive!

Developers seem to associate space with good/bad.  I have not found users care about the size of apps.  The size that the mono framework adds is fairly small in the grand scheme of things.  I've had my contacts in Android waste much more space than apps in my device than the mono framework.
