As per oshima:
The ultimate goal is to eliminate TOOLKIT_USES_GTK. Once that migration is completed, TOOLKIT_VIEWS + OS_LINUX should be enough.
Until this happens, we need a binary that:
1) has both gtk and pure-views
2) can enable pure views components with --use-pure-views when possible (this is default in touchui=1).
If we could switch everything with --use-pure-views, that'd be nice, but the world is not perfect and there are things that cannot co-exist (such as message pump). For such component, we'll use GYP_DEFINES to switch.
1) TOOLKIT_USES_PURE_VIEWS is defined with toolkit_pure_views=1.
2) all (or most of) chrome features must be functional with toolkit_pure_views=1
3) both TOOLKIT_USES_GTK and TOOLKIT_USES_PURE_VIEWS are defined. The latter has higher priority (that is, if implementation can't co-exists, TOOLKIT_USE_PURE_VIEWS will take precedence).
4) As the migration proceeds, there will be less TOOLKIT_USES_GTK and more TOOLKIT_USES_PURE_VIEWS.
5) Once the migration is complete (that is, there is no TOOKIT_USES_GTK), we can remove TOOLKIT_USES_PURE_VIEWS or replace it with OS_LINUX when necessary.

# Mac OS X SDK and deployment target support.

# The SDK identifies the version of the system headers that will be used,

# Although base/allocator lets you select a heap library via an
Make no-tcmalloc (really, non-base/allocator) builds work again,
(i.e. this is a plain vanilla build used when layers like base/allocator
are getting in the way of debugging)
and make sure they use msvcrt rather than libcmt
(libcmt is used to help shim malloc/free, but it gets
in the way of valgrind doing the same thing).
Sadly, this is now a gyp-time operation rather than a Configuration
option.
Had to remove hardcoded C prototype for _set_new_mode,
as that caused link errors.
Also add variables win_{release,debug}_{Optimization,RuntimeLibrary}
to let the valgrind build override those settings.
Fix calling convention on _set_new_mode to match the
one in <new.h>
BUG=none
TEST=build with ~/.gyp/include.gypi set as described in comment in common.gypi, gclient runhooks, do release build, verify all exe's and dll's linked against msvcrt dll

WinDDK ATL and MSVC express 2008/2005 compatability
Gives 'out of the box' compatability with VC2008 express - i.e. no modifications needed to system headers or .gyp* files or related hacks. Just set the GYP_MSVS_VERSION to 200Xe (e for express, same as the linked blog on the issue and first google hit as well).
1) Changes to build\common.gypi to turn off to define COMPILER_MSVC_EXPRESS if a express is detected (through the GYP_MSVC_VERSION environment variable), turn off the _SECURE_ATL define (which is flagged as an error with WinDDK's ATL, _SECURE_ATL adds [more] CRT checks to other ATL versions) and hard to link to the atl stdthunk library with express editions. Also, explicitly link to the base WinSDK libraries in common.gypi and mini_installer.gypi for MSVC 2005 express.
2) Fixes a few .cc files that have the wrong include order with the ATL headers when using the Windows DDK ATL. The Windows DDK ATL brings in intsafe.h (WinSDK, not WinDDK) with atlwin.h and generates multiple INTXX_MIN/MAX def warnings which get
flagged as errors with the warnings as errors flag if not included before other libraries that have the same definitions like ICU.
3) Changes to .rc files to avoid pulling in afxres.h (an MFC header -
it's available in the WinDDK) and winres.h which VCExpress doesn't have (it's available in a WinSDK sample, but that kind of the purpose of it). The main Chromium .rc files are already structured this way, I just changed the rest and changed the output of grit to do the same.
4) Removes the memset obj file linking in mini_installer.gyp and simply implements memset for mini_installer.cc.
Only changes to the chromium branch now. There are some .rc files in the Python26, Native Client, and Angle in samples that could #3 changes. They are not required for Chromium, however.

currently.
The base developer instructions work fine afterwards with a couple tweaks for express versions:
http://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/build-instructions-windows
Under "Additional (free) downloads" under step 2:
X) Only the first 3 Non-SP KB Patches are needed for express. Don't forget to forget GYP_MSVS_VERSION environment as appropriate - 2008e for Visual C++ 2008 Express, for example.
Under "Additional (free) downloads" after step 5
[These only apply to 2008 express, 2005 works fine out of the box]:
6A) Download the WinDDK for the atl headers and libs -
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487463.aspx. It works fine, but you do not need to install the whole DDK. In the WDK directory just install headers.msi, libs_x86fre.msi, and libs_x64fre.msi; just grab the atl headers and atl*.lib libs; right click the installers and uninstall afterwards. Add the appropriate include and lib paths to your global settings.
6B) To build x64 targets (x64 Native Client) download:
http://www.cppblog.com/Files/xcpp/VCE64BIT_WIN7SDK.zip
Follow the readme instructions.

BUG=1433, 5026, 72885
TEST=Compiles in both Debug and Release mode in Visual C++ Express 2008/2005 and does not effect other build setups. In addition, the WinDDK ATL compiles with the secure_atl=0 in the GYP_DEFINES environment variable on non-express versions of MSVC.

Had to remove hardcoded C prototype for _set_new_mode,

# ASLR makes debugging with windbg difficult because Chrome.exe and

Add a new option, debug_optimize, that lets you set the
optimization level used for debug builds on linux.
They still default to -O0, but you can set them to -O1 by
doing 'gyp -Ddebug_optimize=1'.
This cuts valgrind runtime without screwing up stack dumps too badly.
On the buildbot, the easiest way to use this is to
create the file ~/.gyp/include.gypi by hand, containing the lines
# Override for valgrind buildbot
{
'variables': {
'debug_optimize': '1',

From then on, any "gclient sync" run, when it runs gyp after finishing,
will cause debug builds to use -O1. This is a bit obscure, but
it's a heck of a lot easier than threading some flag value
through the buildbot scripts or adding a new build mode.

# All floating-point computations on x87 happens in 80-bit
# precision. Because the C and C++ language standards allow
# the compiler to keep the floating-point values in higher
# precision than what's specified in the source and doing so
# is more efficient than constantly rounding up to 64-bit or
# 32-bit precision as specified in the source, the compiler,
# especially in the optimized mode, tries very hard to keep
# values in x87 floating-point stack (in 80-bit precision)
# as long as possible. This has important side effects, that
# the real value used in computation may change depending on
# how the compiler did the optimization - that is, the value
# kept in 80-bit is different than the value rounded down to
# 64-bit or 32-bit. There are possible compiler options to
# make this behavior consistent (e.g. -ffloat-store would keep
# all floating-values in the memory, thus force them to be
# rounded to its original precision) but they have significant
# runtime performance penalty.
#
# -mfpmath=sse -msse2 makes the compiler use SSE instructions
# which keep floating-point values in SSE registers in its
# native precision (32-bit for single precision, and 64-bit
# for double precision values). This means the floating-point
# value used during computation does not change depending on
# how the compiler optimized the code, since the value is
# always kept in its specified precision.

Further information behind that and x64 target building with express:

BUG=1433, 5026, 72885
TEST=Compiles in both Debug and Release mode in Visual C++ Express 2008/2005 and does not effect other build setups. In addition, the WinDDK ATL compiles with the secure_atl=0 in the GYP_DEFINES environment variable on non-express versions of MSVC.

Follow the readme instructions.

# The Xcode generator will look for an xcode_settings section at the root
