Only the edges of this stack are essential—in principal, both C++ and JS consumers could call directly into LMDB, avoiding all Rust layers and the XPCOM intermediary—but each layer serves a useful function: the "lmdb" crate wraps LMDB's C interface in safe (albeit low-level) APIs; rkv improves on developer ergonomics and safety with higher-level abstractions; the "xulstore" crate translates the XULStore data model to arbitrary key-value pairs; and the XPCOM component provides idiomatic access for both C++ and JS consumers.
