(Note: there is a conditional near the top of the file that can turn off the binary insertion sort and revert back to the older, slower code, in case of any weird bugs I haven't caught.) When prettyprinting is on, we will attempt to make the plaintext
  mimic the look of the html; when off (as for copy/paste), we just
