Note that beard's backing out of the negative z-index code did NOT fix
the problem.  This means the bug lurks somewhere else in the file.

Lots of clean up, added DisplayListElement struct instead of storing views in every 3rd slot of the display list, #ifdef USE_DISPLAY_LIST_ELEMENTS.
