Mike Hommey ed863255b4 Bug 1378592 - Remove MOZ_REPLACE_MALLOC_LINKAGE. r=froydnj
MOZ_REPLACE_MALLOC_LINKAGE was added back when there were problems with
getting weak references working properly for replace-malloc.

Versions of OSX < 10.6 needed flat namespace, but aren't supported
anymore.

Versions of Xcode < 4.5 required flat namespace + a dummy library in
order to produce proper weak references. There is virtually nobody still
building with such an ancient toolchain.

Keeping those around doesn't /really/ hurt, except recent versions of
Xcode don't expose dyldinfo in /usr/bin, used for the configure test.
Consequently, MOZ_REPLACE_MALLOC_LINKAGE ended up being set to use the
dummy library setup, which, by using flat namespace, now causes harm in
bug 1356701, causing bug 1378332.

Nathan Froyd c4db85fbe1 Bug 1378440 - part 2 - add `mach cargo check`; r=rillian
Cargo recently introduced the `cargo check` command for shortening the
edit-compile cycle when working on large programs. Since we don't
really support invoking `cargo` directly, let's wire up this command to
`mach`. Gecko developers can then `mach cargo check` to ensure their
changes typecheck.

other commands, such as `cargo check`. Let's refactor things so that
it's easy to reuse said machinery for `cargo check`.

Nathan Froyd 2c6c66c145 Bug 1377971 - part 3 - honor LIB_IS_C_ONLY in more cases; r=glandium
We currently only honor LIB_IS_C_ONLY for cases where we set a
LIBRARY (and, implicitly, REAL_LIBRARY) and FORCE_SHARED_LIB. For many
libraries, such as the libraries from NSS, we never set LIBRARY, which
leads to not setting REAL_LIBRARY, which leads to not honoring
LIB_IS_C_ONLY. This practice has not been harmful thus far (except
perhaps linking in more things than necessary to our NSS shared
libraries), but on some platforms, linking with the C++ compiler will
drag in more things than we would like.

Consulting LIBRARY first should not be necessary; checking
FORCE_SHARED_LIB should be enough to tell us if we're building a shared
library for the purposes of honoring LIB_IS_C_ONLY.

Nathan Froyd 87007ca0f2 Bug 1377157 - remove VCINSTALLDIR from cargo's environment when running in MozillaBuild; r=ted.mielczarek
Stable Rust currently has logic similar to the following for finding the
linker on Windows:

  if VCINSTALLDIR in os.env:
    search for things in PATH
    if found, return, otherwise fallthrough

look for MSVC installations of various kinds

For our current MozillaBuild setup where we clear out PATH prior to
invoking Cargo, this works: even though VCINSTALLDIR is set and we
(unsuccessfully) search through an empty PATH, we'll still fallback to
looking for MSVC installations.

Beta Rust has altered this search strategy:

  if VCINSTALLDIR in os.env:
    search for things in PATH
return the result of the search, regardless of success

look for MSVC installations of various kinds

Note that in the above logic, if VCINSTALLDIR is set, we are only going
to try looking in PATH for an appropriate linker. Since PATH is empty
in our current MozillaBuild setup, beta Rust will therefore fail to find
the correct linker. This failure causes numerous problems.

Since Firefox is already trying to "clean" the environment that Cargo is
invoked in, we should work a little bit harder by unsetting VCINSTALLDIR
entirely, and simply force Rust to search for known MSVC installations.
Making this change makes stable and beta Rust behave identically.

(We don't have to worry about this distinction in automation, because
the "cleaning" code is only activated when we detect a MozillaBuild
shell.)

Ralph Giles 40e81c774e Bug 1365993 - Don't pass mac frameworks to cargo linker. r=froydnj
Procedural macros for rust are compiled as dynamic libraries.
The compiler subsequently loads those libraries at runtime
when it compiles crates which make use of them.

We pass the generic LDFLAGS to our linker wrapper which ensures
cargo links static libraries with the correct flags. However
this also means that any final system dependency libraries
end up linked into the procedural macro dynamic libraries
whether they use them or not.

When building on macOS 10.7, this causes a SIGTRAP when dlopen
calls CFInitialize for system libraries like Cocoa off the main
thread. We believe this is a macOS bug, reported fixed in macOS 10.9.
https://openradar.appspot.com/7209349

Work around the issue by stripping those libraries and Frameworks
from the linker flags we pass to cargo. We could do a more careful
job of parsing and removing all -framework and -lfoo arguments
inside the linker script, but since this is a temporary issue
while we're using older build machines, I thought just stripping
them once in the build system was simpler.

Gregory Szorc 2b1957d1e5 Bug 1361172 - Rewrite code for finding files in VCS checkout; r=glandium
We're getting an intermittent failure running `hg manifest` in CI. I
have no clue why.

What I do know is that we now have the mozversioncontrol Python package
for containing utility code for interacting with version control. It is
slightly more robust and I'm willing to support it more than I am
check_utils.py.

This commit adds a new API to our abstract repository class to obtain the
files in the working directory by querying version control.

Since I suspect cwd was coming into play in automation, I've also
added a utility function to mozversioncontrol to attempt to find
a version control checkout from the current working directory. It
simply traces ancestor paths looking for a .hg or .git directory.

Finally, I've ported all callers of the now-deleted API to the new
one. The old code had some "../.." paths in it, meaning it only
worked when cwd was just right. Since we resolve the absolute path
to the checkout and store it on the repo object, I've updated the
code so it should work no matter what cwd is as long as a repo can
be found. I'm not 100% confident I found all consumers assuming cwd.
But it's a start.

I'm not 100% confident this will fix the intermittent issues in CI. But
at least we should get a better error message and at least we'll be
running less hacky code.

Several years ago, joey starting writing a handful of unit tests for

work was to flush out bugs between GNU make and pymake.

AFAICT the only survivor of these tests today is check_mkdir.py. The
test is a one-off and has been a bit fragile over the years,
contributing technical debt along the way. And as part of removing the
last references to pymake in automation, it is once again showing
itself and failing in a way that has to do with the way the test
is written and not an issue with the code it is testing. Enough is
enough. This commit removes the test and eliminates the technical
debt. I don't think it will be missed.

Nathan Froyd d3325ce1a2 Bug 1329737 - part 3 - use an alternate linker for Cargo invocations; r=rillian
For linking static libraries, rustc will use whatever `cc` it finds (or
the equivalent on Windows). For our purposes, however, `cc` is not what
we use to link and we may have additional options we would like to pass
to the linker.

To do this, we need to tell Cargo about our alternate linker (currently
only used for target compilations, on the theory that the host compiler
rustc finds is probably good enough) and we also need to pass our linker
options into the process. We do this with environment variables, which
is not a great solution, but works surprisingly well.

This alternate linker is disabled for ASan builds due to peculiar
crashes when running Rust build scripts and for Windows, because we
don't do any interesting cross-compiling there.

This change paves the way for injecting target- or host-specific
environment variables for a particular `cargo build` invocation. Doing
this is not strictly necessary: all of our current `cargo build`
invocations use mostly target-specific environment
variables (e.g. PKG_CONFIG_ALLOW_CROSS). But separating things out
makes the code notationally cleaner and also avoids weirdness when
target==host.

Nathan Froyd 2989feb7d7 Bug 1353810 - add a --enable-rust-debug option; r=chmanchester
For people working on Rust code, compiling in debug mode (Cargo's "dev"
profile) is convenient: debug assertions are turned on, optimization is
turned off, and parallel compilation inside of rustc itself can be
used. These things make the build faster and the debugging experience
more pleasant.

To obtain that currently, one needs to --enable-debug at the Gecko
toplevel, which turns on debug assertions for the entire browser, which
makes things run unreasonably slowly. So it would be desirable to be
able to turn *off* debug mode for the entirety of the browser, but turn
on debug mode for the Rust code only.

Hence this added switch, --enable-rust-debug, which does what it
suggests and defaults to the value of --enable-debug. For our own
sanity and because we judge it a non-existent use case, we do not
support --enable-debug --disable-rust-debug.

Chris Manchester 5c47bb8d2e Bug 1337986 - Dump symbols during the compile tier. r=ted
This commit moves symbol dumping to the compile tier, to be run via "syms"
targets. Tracking files are used for the sake of incremental builds, because
dump_syms may genearate multiple outputs whose paths are not known ahead of
time.

Minimal changes to symbolstore.py are made here. More extensive
simplifications will be made in a future commit on the basis of symbolstore.py
handling one file at a time.

Chris Manchester 4db8e0b54a Bug 1337986 - Generate "syms" targets for directories containing programs or shared libraries. r=glandium
This creates "syms" targets that depend on the corresponding "target" for
directories containing shared libraries or programs. These targets are added
to the main compile graph in automation, and can be invoked through a special
"symbols" target. A future commit will use these targets to dump symbols for
shared libraries and programs during the compile tier.

Mike Hommey 767a11189c Bug 1353259 - Remove build system parts that generate a dtrace ELF object. r=mshal
The code doing that was already excluding OSX, so we obviously don't
need it on OSX. On FreeBSD, afaict, USDT (userspace dtrace) probes don't
require that extra ELF object. Solaris presumably does, but the 6 years
old bug 702179 says it's not been working for that long, and configure
doesn't support Solaris targets anyways.

Keeping this build system code working past the changes coming in bug
1262241 is not guaranteed and can't be tested, so I'd rather get rid of
effectively dead code rather than trying to maybe not break it while
moving it.

Ted Mielczarek 5d759be63f bug 1318370 - stop using -Z7 for MSVC compilation with sccache. r=glandium
We've been using -Z7 to make MSVC emit CodeView debug info directly in
the object files instead of in PDB files because sccache can't cache
PDB files if the same one is written to by multiple compiles, which
was previously happening in our build system, and was hard to override
in the NSS build. Now that those are fixed this should work fine.

This adds a bit to the compile rule to remove the PDB file before
compilation, since sccache won't cache a compilation if the PDB file
it is supposed to generate already exists (for the aforementioned reason).

Until we have better distinction between host and target compilers

Gregory Szorc 4732e7cb34 Bug 1171610 - Automatically enable color in compiler output; r=glandium
GCC and Clang will colorize compiler output automatically if stdout is a
TTY. Unfortunately, when the build backend is invoked via `mach`,
stdout is not a TTY.

6e9a4c0b9cd8 (bug 1315785) changed mach so it exports an environment
variable indicating whether mach's original stdout is a TTY. This was
later used to add color flags to `cargo` invocations.

Building on that work, this patch adds color flags to compiler
invocations if the compiler supports color and a mach TTY is
detected. The result is that compiler output from `mach build`
will be colorized automatically if Clang or a modern version of
GCC is used.

The only issue I see with this is that Clang doesn't "unset" its color
sequences when printing a newline. As a result, mach's time line
prefixing can sometimes inherit "bold" or other stylings. AFAICT this is
only a minor cosmetic concern. GCC does not exhibit this issue.

Combined with the previous patch that sets MACH_STDOUT_ISATTY, the
practical effect of this patch is that cargo is invoked with
`--color=always` when mach was attached to a TTY and colorized output
is sent to the terminal.

Note: this doesn't work with Rust/Cargo 1.10 for reasons unknown to me.
It appears there was a bug with Rust/Cargo because `--color=never` still
sent colorized output on that version! Cargo/Rust 1.12.1 works fine.

Nathan Froyd e818915fae Bug 1304815 - rearrange Rust crate structure for newer Rust releases; r=ted.mielczarek
In our current Rust world, we have the following dependency structure:

  xul.so --------------------------+
                                   |
  xul-gtest.so -+--> xul.a --------+-> gkrust
                |
                +--> gkrust-gtest

This structure results in link errors with multiply-defined symbols
between gkrust-gtest and gkrust with newer Rust releases when linking
xul-gtest.so. So we have to do something different.

Our new structure is:

  xul.so --------------------------+
                                   |
  xul-gtest.so -+--> xul.a --------+-> gkrust --+-> gkrust-shared
                | |
                +--> gkrust-gtest --------------+

and we enforce that a given shared library can only have at most one
Rust library that it depends on. Said Rust library is assumed to
include all significant Rust dependencies of the dependent static
libraries as well. (In the above structure, gkrust is simply a wrapper
around gkrust-shared, so gkrust-gtest doesn't have to include gkrust as
a dependency.)

Chris Pearce 35e13f726f Bug 1308076 - Move ClearKeyCencParser to PsshParser library. r=glandium
To validate the PSSH init data passed to EME, I'd like to reuse the same
PSSH parser that the ClearKey CDM shared library uses. So move the code
out of gmp-clearkey and into its own library, so we can link it statically
into code that needs to use it.

Nathan Froyd f7fb6722a6 Bug 1231764 - part 6 - build rust code via cargo; r=chmanchester
This patch is really two separate changes.

The first change is that rust crates are large, standalone entities that
may contain multitudes of source files. It therefore doesn't make sense
to keep them in SOURCES, as we have been doing. Moving to use cargo
will require a higher-level approach, which suggests that we need a
different, higher-level representation for Rust sources in the build
system.

The representation here is to have the build system refer to things
defined in Cargo.toml files as the entities dealt with in the build
system, and let Cargo deal with the details of actually building things.
This approach means that adding a new crate to an existing library just
requires editing Rust and Cargo.toml files, rather than dealing with
moz.build, which seems more natural to Rust programmers. By having the
source files for libraries (and binaries in subsequent iterations of
this support) checked in to the tree, we can also take advantage of
Cargo.lock files.

The second is that we switch the core build system over to building via
cargo, rather than invoking rustc directly.

We also clean up a number of leftover things from the Old Way of doing
things. A number of tests are added to confirm that we'll only permit
crates to be built that have dependencies in-tree.

Through an oversight, we listed librul.a twice when linking libxul: once
as part of the "objects" we were linking, and once as a static library.
This duplication is unnecessary and would cause problems later when we
try to generate librul.a via cargo, as cargo will put it someplace
different from where we expect and the two names will conflict. Let's
have rules.mk be the single source of truth for how librul.a is named,
and then the code to link libxul can simply refer to that name.

Gpsd is the GPS daemon on Linux. It implements support for a wide range
of GPS receivers. This patch adds support for gpsd to the Geolocation
module.

The build system can now test for libgps, which provides the public
interface to gpsd's functionality. If found, |GpsdLocationProvider|
is added to the build.

David Keeler 3fed4e5ecc bug 1272858 - use a name-agnostic method to find the built-in root PKCS#11 slot r=Cykesiopka
Previously this implementation would use the expected names of the built-in
module and slot to get a handle on them. This doesn't work on distributions that
use other names. The new implementation searches through the slots from the
default module list for one where PK11_HasRootCerts returns true (which
indicates that NSS considers that slot to contain the default built-in root
list).

Mike Hommey 8a3b88f341 Bug 1278415 - Also write a mozinfo for js standalone builds. r=gps
Historically, a mozinfo for js standalone build has not been necessary,
but with the move towards a) having things work with mach and b)
buildconfig using the MozbuildObject.from_environment in next patch,
mozinfo becomes necessary (it's required for
MozbuildObject.from_environment to find the directory is an objdir).

Interestingly, hazard builds do both a js standalone build and a desktop
Firefox build at the same time, both of which are done with MOZCONFIG
set in the environment... with the Firefox mozconfig. The result of now
writing a mozinfo for js standalone builds is that in that case, they
end up with a reference to the mozconfig, which the build system then
reads, and finds a MOZ_OBJDIR, which then doesn't match the js
standalone build objdir. So for those builds, reset MOZCONFIG.

Mike Hommey cae8c6bcee Bug 1264534 - Create system wrappers for all declared STL headers. r=froydnj
Until now, we had some STL headers listed in the system-headers list
such that they would get a system wrapper, but not all of them.

On the other hand, the STL wrappers do the same job as the system
wrappers (applying default visibility), on top of their own, so the
presence of the STL headers in system-headers wasn't making much of a
difference.

Except we have places in the tree where we can't build with STL wrappers
for a number of reasons. And in that case, we *do* need system wrappers
for the STL headers, but we didn't have system wrappers for all of them.

So instead of relying on the STL headers being listed both in
system-headers and stl-headers, concatenate both lists to create the
system wrappers.

Mike Hommey aadf5fb0df Bug 1278456 - Bump libstdc++ requirement to 3.4.16 (4.6.1). r=froydnj
Similarly to the considerations about glibc, the Linux compatibility matrix
(https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Linux_compatibility_matrix)
tells us no distro with Gtk+3 3.4 has a version of libstdc++ older than
4.6.

The data in the matrix doesn't go to that level of detail, but Ubuntu
12.04 LTS, being the only one with version 4.6 (others have at least
4.7), it's worth noting it has version 4.6.3. Which means we can safely
require libstdc++ symbols version 3.4.16 (which were added in 4.6.1).

This will allow us to remove a lot of the stdc++ compatibility hacks.

Mike Hommey a898d16968 Bug 1278456 - Bump glibc requirement to 2.12. r=froydnj
The requirement for glibc has been set to version 2.7 for a long while.

Spidermonkey uses the pthread_setname_np symbol, which is only available
since glibc 2.12. So far, we've been fortunate that the symbol doesn't
end up in libxul, or tests that link to js directly, because the symbol
is eliminated as being called by effectively dead code.

There are multiple reasons why this is going to change, one of which
being changes to the way things are linked, that will make the linker
not eliminate that code in some cases. Another is that eventually, the
separation of build systems between js and top-level is going to fade,
and the glibc checks, which apply to all gecko binaries, will also apply
to js binaries. They currently are not happening, and would fail because
of pthread_setname_np if they were.

Taking a step back, as of version 46, the mozilla.org builds require at
least Gtk+3 3.4. Which means the requirements for the underlying system
have received a dramatic bump, and it's time to revisit the requirements
for binary compatibility.

I went through all my notes from all the recent times binary compatibility
has been considered, and put together a compatibility matrix on MDN from
that data as well as more recent data that I could find here and there,
about the major non-rolling-release distros (RHEL, Fedora, SuSE, Debian,
Ubuntu)
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Linux_compatibility_matrix

Considering the data there, none of the distros that have at least Gtk+3
3.4 have a glibc older than 2.13. The list of symbols that 2.13 provides
that 2.12 doesn't have is not large enough, though, to really care about
depending on 2.13.

The intent in bug 1271829 was to make all the XCFLAGS set in

Mike Hommey 8855262939 Bug 1269171 - Change how mozalloc.h is hooked in STL wrappers. r=froydnj
Since the introduction of the STL wrappers, they have included
mozalloc.h, and multiple times, we've hit header reentrancy problems,
and worked around them as best as we could.

Taking a step back, all mozalloc.h does is:
- declare moz_* allocator functions.
- define inline implementations of various operator new/delete variants.

The first only requires the functions to be declared before they are used,
so mozalloc.h only needs to be included before anything that would use
those functions.

The second doesn't actually require a specific order, as long as the
declaration for those functions comes before their use, and they are
either declared in <new> or implicitly by the C++ compiler.

So all in all, it doesn't matter that mozalloc.h is included before the
wrapped STL headers. What matters is that it's included when STL headers
are included. So arrange things such that mozalloc.h is included after
the first wrapped STL header is fully preprocessed (and all its includes
have been included).

Mike Hommey 60564d7bff Bug 1269171 - Backout ccff1c4580ab (bug 1270832) because it doesn't actually work properly and blocks upcoming changes. r=froydnj
It turns out that, since we're including <new> before setting
_GLIBCXX_DEBUG, the debug parts of c++config.h are not activated, and
that has an impact of how much of the debug features of the STL are
activated.

In contrast, the upcoming changes to the STL wrappers are avoiding the
include of <new> before _GLIBCXX_DEBUG is set, which in turn breaks the
build because, as we link things that use STL wrappers with things that
don't, they end up with a different state of STL debugging, and have
mismatching symbols.

David Keeler 1e53398a23 bug 1182742 - allow users to override small key size errors r=rbarnes
Key size enforcement for TLS certificates happens at two levels: PSM and NSS.
PSM enforces a minimum of 1024 bits. NSS enforces a minimum of 1023 bits by
default. The NSS error is not overridable, but the PSM error is. This change
allows users to connect to devices with small RSA keys (as little as 512 bits)
using the certificate error override functionality.

Nathan Froyd 82c6f5d7a7 Bug 1163224 - add build system support for multiple Rust crates; r=glandium
Our current build system support for Rust compiles any Rust crate into a
so-called staticlib, which is a static library (.a file) that includes
the Rust runtime. That staticlib is then linked into libxul. For
supporting multiple crates, this approach breaks down, as linking
multiple copies of the Rust runtime is going to fail.

For supporting multiple crates, the approach taken here is to compile
each crate into a so-called rlib, which is essentially a staticlib
without the Rust runtime linked in. The build system takes note of
every crate destined for linking with libxul (treating them like static
libraries generated from C/C++ files), and generates a super-crate,
whimsically named "rul", that is compiled as a staticlib (so as to
include the Rust runtime) and then linked into libxul. Thus only one
copy of the Rust runtime is included, and the Rust compiler can take
care of any inter-crate dependencies.

This patch currently only supports Rust code in shared libraries, not in
binaries.

Nathan Froyd 45af5cd66c Bug 1163224 - add build system support for multiple Rust crates; r=glandium
Our current build system support for Rust compiles any Rust crate into a
so-called staticlib, which is a static library (.a file) that includes
the Rust runtime. That staticlib is then linked into libxul. For
supporting multiple crates, this approach breaks down, as linking

For supporting multiple crates, the approach taken here is to compile

This patch currently only supports Rust code in shared libraries, not in

backend, with a special hook for derived backends to handle shared
library objects.

Gregory Szorc 8bec49cc68 Bug 1262569 - Do not print individual source targets being built; r=ted
Multiple people have complained that the build output of printing the
source files being built adds little value. I agree. The extra output
doesn't give really helpful progress info because sources can be built
in non-deterministic order. Furthermore, the extra output hides useful
output like compiler warnings.

This patch makes the default build system output even less verbose. We
no longer print the individual source targets when they are built. We do
still print the targets for binaries, so some sense of progress can be
inferred.

If people like verbosity, they can export the undocumented
BUILD_VERBOSE_LOG environment variable can be set to restore the old
behavior.

Ted Mielczarek 58e2e722d0 bug 1239083 - use moz.build files to build ICU. r=glandium, waldo
Also fixes bug 926980 - load ICU data from an archive file.

Stop invoking ICU's autoconf build system. Instead, have hand-authored
moz.build files under config/external/icu to build what we need. In addition,
we'll commit a pre-built copy of the ICU data file (currently icudt56l.dat)
under config/external/icu/data to avoid having to build ICU host tools to
generate it. config/external/icu/data also contains some assembly files
which can generate an object file containing the ICU data file contents
so that the JS shell (or standalone JS builds) can be linked directly to
the data without having to deal with the external data file. This requires
yasm or GNU as.

Various bits of packaging have been updated to account for the ICU data file.
XPCOM initialization now sets the ICU data directory so ICU can locate its
data file.

The update-icu.sh script has been modified to read the list of C/C++ source
files out of the ICU Makefiles and update `sources.mozbuild` files under
config/external/icu, as well as build a local copy of ICU using its
autoconf build system to generate the ICU data file to be committed in-tree.

David Keeler 2f0004e1be bug 1228175 - fix IsCertBuiltInRoot r=Cykesiopka,mgoodwin
When a built-in root certificate has its trust changed from the default value,
the platform has to essentially create a copy of it in the read/write
certificate database with the new trust settings. At that point, the desired
behavior is that the platform still considers that certificate a built-in root.
Before this patch, this would indeed happen for the duration of that run of the

Our STL wrappers do various different things, one of which is including
mozalloc.h for infallible operator new. mozalloc.h includes stdlib.h,
which, in libstdc++ >= 6 is now itself a wrapper around cstdlib, which
circles back to our STL wrapper.

But of the things our STL wrappers do, including mozalloc.h is not one
that is necessary for cstdlib. So skip including mozalloc.h in our
cstdlib wrapper.

Additionally, some C++ sources (in media/mtransport) are including
headers in an extern "C" block, which end up including stdlib.h, which
ends up including cstdlib because really, this is all C++, and our
wrapper pre-includes <new> for mozalloc.h, which fails because templates
don't work inside extern "C". So, don't pre-include <new> when we're not
including mozalloc.h.

once upon a time. The companion variable, MOZ_POST_PROGRAM_COMMAND, is
only used by HP-UX, but as we're not wholesale removing HP-UX
support (yet), we should leave MOZ_POST_PROGRAM_COMMAND alone.
