Nicholas Nethercote 3aa25724fe Bug 1402255 - Change nsIBaseWindow::title from wstring to AString. r=janv.
Because nsAString is nicer to work with than char16_t*. The patch relatedly
changes nsIEmbeddingSiteWindow::title and nsIWindowMediator::updateWindowTitle
as well.

Chris Peterson b98afa1d19 Bug 870698 - Part 11: Replace Insert(NS_LITERAL_STRING("")) with InsertLiteral(u""). r=erahm
The NS_LITERAL_STRING macro creates a temporary nsLiteralString to encapsulate the char16_t string literal and its length, but AssignLiteral() can determine the char16_t string literal's length at compile-time without nsLiteralString.

Kartikaya Gupta b4ad327a0e Bug 1390488 - Pass the childProcessTmpDir from the parent process to the GPU process. r=froydnj
The GPU process doesn't have the directory service enabled, so it can't find
a tmp dir to put its .extra files for crash reports. Even if we do enable the
directory service, we still don't get the correct "content process tmp dir" in
the GPU process, because the UUID baked into that folder is passed via the
preferences service, and that isn't initialized in the GPU process either.
Rather than unneccessarily initialize all this stuff in the GPU process just
to get one folder name, we can pass that folder name directly in the argv list.

See comments 12-19 on the bug for further discussion of the various solutions
attempted/explored.

Andrew Sutherland 53d89ea1a9 Bug 1395827 - Eliminate NO_REMOTE_TYPE and default GetNewOrUsedBrowserProcess() remote type arg. r=billm
NO_REMOTE_TYPE seems to have been an artifact of introducing remote types and
not wanting to change things. This eliminates the type, changing
GetNewOrUsedBrowserProcess() to no longer use a default argument so that
callers must think about the remote type they want. Additionally, the existing
call-site used by xpcshell in nsEmbedFunctions.cpp is updated to use the
DEFAULT_REMOTE_TYPE of "web", as-is the unused nsAppRunner.cpp case. (That is,
no one appears to call nsXULAppInfo::EnsureContentProcess directly or via its
XPCOM interface, and so it probably should be removed. However, since I
potentially want this patch uplifted to beta 56 and legacy extensions exist
there, we're not addressing that in this patch.)

Nicholas Nethercote f582d96b98 Bug 1390428 (part 9) - Remove nsXPIDLCString. r=erahm.
This is straightforward, with only two notable things.

- `#include "nsXPIDLString.h" is replaced with `#include "nsString.h"`
  throughout, because all nsXPIDLString.h did was include nsString.h. The
  exception is for files which already include nsString.h, in which case the
  patch just removes the nsXPIDLString.h inclusion.

- The patch removes the |xpidl_string| gtest, but improves the |voided| test to
  cover some of its ground, e.g. testing Adopt(nullptr).

Nicholas Nethercote 025461bde7 Bug 1390428 (part 1) - Remove many nsXPIDLCString local variables. r=erahm.
These are all easy cases where an nsXPIDLCString local variable is set via
getter_Copies() and then is only used in ways that nsCStrings can also be used
(i.e. no null checks or implicit conversions to |char*|).

In every case the patch trivially replaces the nsXPIDLCString with an
nsCString. (Also, there are a couple of unused nsXPIDLCString variables that
the patch simply removes.)

Mike Hommey ee54ae2104 Bug 1390776 - Put definition and uses of gProgname under #ifdef CRAWL_STACK_ON_SIGSEGV. r=njn
gProgname is actually never used outside #ifdef CRAWL_STACK_ON_SIGSEGV,
and it being defined and filled with a strdup even when not used leads
to a (purposeful, but useless) leak.

The leak was not detected so far because GCC 4.9 generated a call to
PL_strdup followed by a store to gProgname, while GCC 6 keeps the
PL_strdup but is smart enough to figure out it doesn't need to store to
gProgname (and to not keep space for that variable).

So with GCC 4.9, the leak was not considered a leak because it was still
reachable, but with GCC 6, it's not reachable anymore, and thus
considered as a leak.

nsXPIDLStrings are marked as VOIDED upon initialization. Most of these local
nsXPIDLString variables are immediately set via getter_Copies(), which will
either assign a string value (using Adopt()) or do SetIsVoid(). These can be
trivially converted to nsString, which will get the same treatment.

The patch suitably converts the remaining nsXPIDLString local variable as well.

Nicholas Nethercote 08e54b7c13 Bug 1384819 (part 1) - Split MozStackWalk(). r=glandium.
MozStackWalk() is different on Windows to the other platforms. It has two extra
arguments, which can be used to walk the stack of a different thread.

This patch makes those differences clearer. Instead of having a single function
and forbidding those two arguments on non-Windows, it removes those arguments
from MozStackWalk, and splits off MozStackWalkThread() which retains them. This
also allows those arguments to have more appropriate types (HANDLE instead of
uintptr_t; CONTEXT* instead of than void*) and names (aContext instead of
aPlatformData).

The patch also removes unnecessary reinterpret_casts for the aClosure argument
at a couple of MozStackWalk() callsites.

Nicholas Nethercote 0574a6b496 Bug 1384835 (part 2) - Remove the Preferences::Get*String() variants that return nsAdoptingString. r=froydnj.
Because we want to remove nsAdoptingString. We have other variants that don't
use nsAdoptingString, which can be used instead. There are three basic
patterns.

1. The easiest case is when we don't check for success.

> nsAdoptingString s = Preferences::GetString("foo");
> foo(s);

becomes:

> nsAutoString s;
> Preferences::GetString("foo", s);
> foo(s);

2. The next case is when we check if the result is empty.

> nsAdoptingString s = Preferences::GetString("foo");
> if (s.IsEmpty()) { ... }

becomes:

> nsAutoString s;
> Preferences::GetString("foo", s);
> if (s.IsEmpty()) { ... }

3. The final case is when we null check the result.

> nsAdoptingString s = Preferences::GetString("foo");
> if (s) { ... }

becomes:

> nsAutoString s;
> nsresult rv = Preferences::GetString("foo", s);
> if (NS_SUCCEEDED(rv)) { ... }

The patch also avoids some UTF8/UTF16 conversions in a few places.

Julian Seward 408d24da56 Bug 1382563 - Remove ns*String::AssignWithConversion. r=erahm.
This patch replaces four functions of the name AssignWithConversion which
are essentially wrappers around CopyASCIItoUTF16 and LossyCopyUTF16toASCII
with direct calls to the latter two functions. The replaced functions are:

  void nsCString::AssignWithConversion( const nsAString& aData )
  void nsString::AssignWithConversion( const nsACString& aData )

  void nsTString_CharT::AssignWithConversion(
                            const incompatible_char_type* aData,
                            int32_t aLength = -1);

The last of the three exists inside the double-included nsTString* world and
so describes two functions, giving four in total.

This has two advantages:

* it removes code

* at the call points, it makes clear (from the replacement name) which
  conversion is being carried out. The generic name "AssignWithConversion"
  doesn't make that obvious -- one had to infer it from the types.

The patch also removes two commented out lines from
editor/composer/nsComposerCommands.cpp, that appear to be related. They are
at top level, where they would never have compiled. They look like
leftovers from some previous change.

Georg Fritzsche 09d533dae9 Bug 1366294 - Part 1 - Remove base::StatisticsRecorder. r=chutten
The Chromium IPC histogram code used the StatisticsRecorder object for storage.
This is keyed by histogram name, which doesn't match our storage reality anymore.
Instead we use a name to refer to a set of histogram instances that record data from different processes, as well as separating session and subsession data.
Consequently we need to rewrite this storage, which means StatisticsRecorder is not used anymore.

Blake Kaplan bb284dfc84 Bug 1372824 - Work around race conditions on startup enabling e10s. r=Felipe
There are two race conditions that happen on startup because we read an
install.rdf with a DOM parser before addons have a chance to run. The current
code caches the first value that it computes, meaning that if it runs before
e10srollout does, it will cache the default values for its channel (off on
Beta and Release). This patch fixes the races by never caching the value of
the MultiprocessBlockPolicy (which is fine, it's only ever called in two
places) and by letting e10srollout tell BrowserTabsRemote to update its cached
value.

Nicholas Nethercote c86dc10505 Bug 1380227 - Avoid many UTF16toUTF8 and UTF8toUTF16 conversions in nsStringBundle. r=emk.
Most of the names passed to nsIStringBundle::{Get,Format}StringFromUTF8Name
have one of the two following forms:

- a 16-bit C string literal, which is then converted to an 8-bit string in
  order for the lookup to occur;

- an 8-bit C string literal converted to a 16-bit string, which is then
  converted back to an 8-bit string in order for the lookup to occur.

This patch introduces and uses alternative methods that can take an 8-bit C
string literal, which requires changing some signatures in other methods and
functions. It replaces all C++ uses of the old methods.

The patch also changes the existing {Get,Format}StringFromName() methods so
they take an AUTF8String argument for the name instead of a wstring, because
that's nicer for JS code.

Even though there is a method for C++ code and a different one for JS code,
|binaryname| is used so that the existing method names can be used for the
common case in both languages.

The change reduces the number of NS_ConvertUTF8toUTF16 and
NS_ConvertUTF16toUTF8 conversions while running Speedometer v2 from ~270,000 to
~160,000. (Most of these conversions involved the string
"deprecatedReferrerDirective" in nsCSPParser.cpp.)

It's silly to use prmem.h within Firefox code given that in our configuration

mix PR_Malloc() with free(), or malloc() with PR_Free().)

This patch removes all uses, except for the places where we need to use
PR_Free() to free something allocated by another NSPR function; in those cases
I've added a comment explaining which function did the allocation.

Nicholas Nethercote 58786e1ea7 Bug 1375392 - Tweak the PROFILER_LABEL* macros. r=mstange.
This patch makes the following changes to the macros.

- Removes PROFILER_LABEL_FUNC. It's only suitable for use in functions outside
  classes, due to PROFILER_FUNCTION_NAME not getting class names, and it was
  mostly misused.

- Removes PROFILER_FUNCTION_NAME. It's no longer used, and __func__ is
  universally available now anyway.

- Combines the first two string literal arguments of PROFILER_LABEL and
  PROFILER_LABEL_DYNAMIC into a single argument. There was no good reason for
  them to be separate, and it forced a '::' in the label, which isn't always
  appropriate. Also, the meaning of the "name_space" argument was interpreted
  in an interesting variety of ways.

- Adds an "AUTO_" prefix to PROFILER_LABEL and PROFILER_LABEL_DYNAMIC, to make
  it clearer they construct RAII objects rather than just being function calls.
  (I myself have screwed up the scoping because of this in the past.)

- Fills in the 'js::ProfileEntry::Category::' qualifier within the macro, so
  the caller doesn't need to. This makes a *lot* more of the uses fit onto a
  single line.

The patch also makes the following changes to the macro uses (beyond those
required by the changes described above).

- Fixes a bunch of labels that had gotten out of sync with the name of the
  class and/or function that encloses them.

- Removes a useless PROFILER_LABEL use within a trivial scope in
  EventStateManager::DispatchMouseOrPointerEvent(). It clearly wasn't serving
  any useful purpose. It also serves as extra evidence that the AUTO_ prefix is
  a good idea.

- Tweaks DecodePool::SyncRunIf{Preferred,Possible} so that the labelling is
  done within them, instead of at their callsites, because that's a more
  standard way of doing things.

- nsJSUtils::mProfilerRAII -> nsJSUtils::mAutoProfilerLabel

Plus a few other minor ones (e.g. local variables).

The patch also add MOZ_GUARD_OBJECT macros to all the profiler RAII classes
that lack them, and does some minor whitespace reformatting.

GeckoAppShell.scheduleRestart was called from XPCOM toolkit when we

Myk Melez 07f5d65c45 Bug 1358790 - compile city.cpp in toolkit/xre/ so it doesn't depend on browser/; r=mhowell
Bug 1324617 added /other-licenses/nsis/Contrib/CityHash/cityhash/city.cpp
to the sources for browser/components/shell/, which gets linked into libxul
via browsercomps.

Bug 1348609 then made toolkit/xre/nsXREDirProvider.cpp use the same file,
which made toolkit depend on browser. That busts other XUL apps, which then
have to individually satisfy that dependency.

This change links city.cpp into libxul directly by compiling it as part of
toolkit/xre/.

Zibi Braniecki a1a4f0b7c9 Bug 1346616 - Migrate callsites that are retrieving requested locale from pref, to use LocaleService::GetRequestedLocales. r=jfkthame,Pike
I'm adding a helper function mozILocaleService::GetRequestedLocale to simplify
most of the callsites that are looking for the first of the requested locales.

In most cases, I'm just matching the behavior of the code with reusing
LocaleService API instead of direct manipulation on the prefs.
That includes how I handle error case scenarios.

In case of sdk/l10n/locale.js I am reusing LocaleService heuristics over
the custom one from the file since the ones in LocaleService are just
more correct and unified accross the whole platform.

In case of FallbackEncoding I have to turn it into a nsIObserver to listen
to intl:requested-locales-changed.

feel were also added since there are many calls into GTK in the platform
specific one.

This is an exploit mitigation which causes the Windows system allocator to abort
in the event it is in a corrupted state, rather than attempt to proceed in a
potentially exploitable state.

Because we use jemalloc, this only affects system libraries or plugins which
still use the system allocator.

The has been enabled on our content processes for a while without incident.

Nicholas Nethercote bcac800a39 Bug 1346132 (part 1) - Initialize Mozilla logging earlier in nsAppRunner.cpp. r=erahm.
The following functions all call NS_LogInit() (either directly or via
ScopedLogging) and then call LogModule::Init() very shortly after:
XRE_InitChildProcess(), NS_InitXPCOM2(), NS_InitMinimalXPCOM(),
XRE_XPCShellMain().

XREMain::XRE_main() does not, however. This prevents us from using MOZ_LOG
easily in the profiler, because the profiler starts up earlier than logging in
the browser.

This patch adds an early LogModule::Init() to XRE_main(), just after the
NS_LogInit().

Gabriele Svelto 1ab1c1e41b Bug 1322611 - After a crash compute the SHA256 hash of a minidump and attach it to the crash ping; r=Ted, nchen
This patch changes the crashreporter client code as well as the crash service
code to compute a SHA256 hash of a crash' minidump file and add it to the
crash ping. The crash service code computes the hash on the fly before handing
over the crash to the crash manager; the crash manager will then add it to the
crash ping. The crashreporter client on the other hand sends the hash via the
ping it generates but it also adds it to the event file so that the crash
manager can pick it up and send it along with its own crash ping. On Fennec
the crashreporter activity takes care of computing the hash.

SHA256 hash computation uses nsICryptoHash in the crash service, the
java.security.MessageDigest class in Fennec, the bundled NSS library in the
crashreporter when running on Windows and Mac and the system-provided NSS
library under Linux. The latter is required because the crashreporter client
uses the system curl library which is linked to NSS and which would thus clash
with the bundled one if used together.

This patch introduces two new methods for the nsICrashService interface:
|getMinidumpForID()| and |getExtraFileForID()|, these reliably retrieve the
.dmp and .extra files associated with a crash and ensure the files exist
before returning. These new methods are used in the CrashService for
processing and will become the only way to reliably retrieve those files
from a crash ID.

David Major dc67bfc9a3 Bug 1344629 - Part 6: Rewrite unnecessary uses of nsLiteralString. r=dbaron
There's an antipattern where nsLiteralString is used as an unnecessary intermediary in converting from CharT* to CharT*,
e.g. CallAFunctionThatTakesACharPointer(NS_LITERAL_CSTRING("foo").get());
or
NS_NAMED_LITERAL_STRING(foo, "abc");
CallAFunctionThatTakesACharPointer(foo.get());

This patch rewrites the callsites that can be trivially changed to use char*/char16_t*.

I'd somewhat like to remove nsTLiteralString::get() altogether, but in code that's less straightforward than these examples, get() is useful enough to keep.

Bug 1343075 - 1a. Add TextEventDispatcherListener::GetIMEUpdatePreference; r=masayuki

Add a GetIMEUpdatePreference method to TextEventDispatcherListener to
optionally control which IME notifications are received by NotifyIME.
This patch also makes nsBaseWidget forward its GetIMEUpdatePreference
call to the widget's native TextEventDispatcherListener.

Bug 1343075 - 1b. Implement GetIMEUpdatePreference for all TextEventDispatcherListener; r=masayuki

This patch implements GetIMEUpdatePreference for all
TextEventDispatcherListener implementations, by moving previous
implementations of nsIWidget::GetIMEUpdatePreference.

Bug 1343075 - 2. Allow setting a PuppetWidget's native TextEventDispatcherListener; r=masayuki

In PuppetWidget, add getter and setter for the widget's native
TextEventDispatcherListener. This allows overriding of PuppetWidget's
default IME handling. For example, on Android, the PuppetWidget's native
TextEventDispatcherListener will communicate directly with Java IME code
in the main process.

Bug 1343075 - 3. Add AIDL interface for main process; r=rbarker

Add AIDL definition and implementation for an interface for the main
process that child processes can access.

Bug 1343075 - 4. Set Gecko thread JNIEnv for child process; r=snorp

Add a JNIEnv* parameter to XRE_SetAndroidChildFds, which is used to set
the Gecko thread JNIEnv for child processes. XRE_SetAndroidChildFds is
the only Android-specific entry point for child processes, so I think
it's the most logical place to initialize JNI.

Bug 1343075 - 5. Support multiple remote GeckoEditableChild; r=esawin

Support remote GeckoEditableChild instances that are created in the
content processes and connect to the parent process GeckoEditableParent
through binders.

Support having multiple GeckoEditableChild instances in GeckoEditable by
keeping track of which child is currently focused, and only allow
calls to/from the focused child by using access tokens.

Bug 1343075 - 6. Add method to get GeckoEditableParent instance; r=esawin

Add IProcessManager.getEditableParent, which a content process can call
to get the GeckoEditableParent instance that corresponds to a given
content process tab, from the main process.

Bug 1343075 - 7. Support GeckoEditableSupport in content processes; r=esawin

Support creating and running GeckoEditableSupport attached to a
PuppetWidget in content processes.

Because we don't know PuppetWidget's lifetime as well as nsWindow's,
when attached to PuppetWidget, we need to attach/detach our native
object on focus/blur, respectively.

Bug 1343075 - 8. Connect GeckoEditableSupport on PuppetWidget creation; r=esawin

Listen to the "tab-child-created" notification and attach our content
process GeckoEditableSupport to the new PuppetWidget.

Mike Hommey 7523430127 Bug 1330533 - Use FuzzerDriver directly instead of wrapping it in a libfuzzer_main function. r=decoder
Going further from the previous changes, all libfuzzer_main really does
is call the init function, and then proceed to call the fuzzer driver
with the testing function.

So instead of calling that function for it to do all that, the
LibFuzzerRunner can just call the init function itself, and then
call the fuzzer driver with the testing function.

Mike Hommey cc6c5d8f71 Bug 1330533 - Pass LibFuzzerInitFunc and LibFuzzerTestingFunc to libfuzzer_main. r=decoder
The LibFuzzerRunner code lives in libxul. It's unnecessary complications
to have it call back a function in the firefox executable just so that
it calls another function that is in libxul. Passing the init and
testing functions to the libfuzzer_main function allows to just bypass
that roundtrip, simplifying the setup.

Mike Hommey 92c5bff388 Bug 1330533 - Remove argc/argv arguments to XRE_LibFuzzerSetMain. r=decoder
The function given to XRE_LibFuzzerSetMain is called from somewhere that
does have access to argc/argv already, so we can avoid passing them
to XRE_LibFuzzerSetMain.

This actually might fix subtle issues with argc/argv not really matching
reality when calling the LibFuzzerMain function in the current code:
some arguments are handled before the call, and both argc and argv are
modified from within XRE_main, but the values stored for the
LibFuzzerMain call still are the original ones.

Argv being a pointer, and it not being reallocated, the value stored for
the LibFuzzerMain call points to the changed one, but argc, being an
integer, is not modified accordingly.

In fact, it's actually worse, because while the Gecko code doesn't
reallocate argv, gtk_main might. So if some GTK flag is passed on the
command line, there's also a possibility that the LibFuzzerMain function
will do a use-after-free.

So all in all, it's just better to use the set of modified argc/argv
from XRE_main instead of storing them from main().

Mike Hommey 2330dcf840 Bug 1306327 - Move reading application.ini to XRE_main. r=bsmedberg
Reading application.ini involves using nsCOMPtr<nsIFile>, and that can
only happen through the XPCOM glue, which we eventually want to get rid
of.

So, while keeping the command line argument/environment variable
handling in nsBrowserApp, we move the actually parsing of the file to
XRE_main, where things can be handled without the XPCOM glue.

Mike Hommey 5f3d2e8810 Bug 1306327 - Add a new XRE Bootstrap API that wraps all the XRE methods. r=bsmedberg
This is the first step towards changing how nsBrowserApp and other current
XPCOM glue users start up Gecko.

The goal here is to expose the same API via a single object with a
VTable instead of the current XPCOM glue machinery. Instead of creating
an entirely new API and changing everything to use it, we go forward
with smaller steps for a more comprehensible transition.

Markus Stange 4bdc4ca0fb Bug 1323100 - Register most of the remaining threadfunc threads with the profiler. r=froydnj
As far as I can tell, this covers all the remaining threads which we start
using PR_CreateThread, except the ones that are created inside NSPR or NSS,
and except for the Shutdown Watchdog thread in nsTerminator.cpp and the
CacheIO thread. The Shutdown Watchdog thread stays alive past leak detection
during shutdown (by design), so we'd report leaks if we profiled it. The
CacheIO thread seems to stay alive past shutdown leak detection sometimes as
well.

This adds a AutoProfilerRegister stack class for easy registering and
unregistering. There are a few places where we still call
profiler_register_thread() and profiler_unregister_thread() manually, either
because registration happens conditionally, or because there is a variable that
gets put on the stack before the AutoProfilerRegister (e.g. a dynamically
generated thread name). AutoProfilerRegister needs to be the first object on
the stack because it uses its own `this` pointer as the stack top address.
