Thanks to sfraser's research we discovered that there was a nasty problem caused by mactime.c including xp_mcom.h (added by brade on 3/3) causing ctime to be redefined as macctime. This is bad since macctime calls ctime (can you say recursion, recusrion, recusrsion...).
